Love Insanity or Insane Love
26th of December, 1994.
Barty made his way up to the old overgrown manor house that had once belonged to his Master's father. He had failed. How Dumbledore suddenly realised that he wasn't Moody was beyond him. He would take whatever punishment his Master would give. He sincerely hoped there was another way to bring him back. The Dark Lord had to rise again.
He entered the manor and walked up to the study. He took a deep breath. This wasn't going to end well for him. He knocked on the door.
"Come insssside," the cold hissing voice of Lord Voldemort drifted out through the door.
Barty opened the door and walked inside. He knelt with his head bowed. "Dumbledore found out about me," he said. "I don't know how he did it. I was lucky the old fool is so soft. I could escape while he was dealing with the real Moody."
The homunculus sitting in front of him hissed angrily. His plans had been ruined. 'Albus,' he thought angrily. At least Barty was back with him. The young man was a far better help to him than Wormtail. He should have counted on Dumbledore ruining his plans. "Leave me, Barty," he said. "I have sssome planning to do. We'll have to change our approach. Keep Wormtail away from here!"
Barty stood up and bowed before exiting the room. He had been lucky.
…
Back at Hogwarts Harry was running through the snow. Fleur had opted out. She didn't like the cold.
Harry on the other side was used to it. He headed upstairs once he was done and cleaned up before getting dressed for the day.
Neville was sitting by the Gryffindor table when Harry got there. He was poking at his breakfast but didn't seem that interested in eating it. "How is it, Neville?" he asked.
Neville shrugged. "Just don't feel like anything," he said. He looked at his watch and stood up.
Harry rose with him and took his sandwich along. He placed a hand on Neville's shoulder. "Do you need to talk?" he asked.
Neville shook his head. "Not really," he said.
"Neville."
Harry looked towards the great doors. A tall, strict-looking woman was standing there. She had a vulture attached to her hat. From memory, Harry knew that this was Neville's grandmother. He walked up towards her with Neville.
"Good morning, gran," Neville said.
"Good morning Neville," Madam Longbottom said. She looked at Harry. "Who is your friend here?"
Neville turned to Harry. "This is Harry Potter, Gran. Harry, this is my grandmother, Augusta Longbottom," he introduced them.
"Madam Longbottom it is lovely to meet you," Harry said. He kissed her hand.
"Lovely to meet you too Mr Potter," Augusta said. "Will you be coming with us?" she asked.
Harry could see how Neville's face turned red.
"We are going to see Neville's parents," Augusta said. "I'm sure they would love to meet you."
Harry was taken a little off guard. He wasn't sure what to do at this point. He knew Neville was raised by his grandmother. He didn't know why. Neville had never spoken to him about it. He was trying to quickly decide what would give Neville less trouble in the long run. Judging by the way Augusta was looking at her grandson he figured that agreeing would be best. "I would be honoured to come along," he said.
"Fantastic," Augusta said. "Come along then boys.'' She led them out of the school and off the grounds. They side-along apparated straight into the reception area of what looked like it might be a hospital.
Harry followed Neville and his grandmother. They seemed to know where they were going. He was hoping Neville wouldn't be angry with him.
They went to the fourth floor and walked through a set of doors with a sign hanging over them. The Janus Thickey Ward.
Harry stayed behind as Neville and Augusta walked through the room to a set of beds with a man and a woman laying in them. Harry could clearly see that these were Neville's parents. He looked so much like his mother.
"Come here Harry," Augusta said. She introduced him to her son and his wife. They had been tortured to insanity by Death Eaters only weeks after Lily and James had been killed. Harry could see how painful this was for Neville, but he doubted that him being there actually made it worse. It might even help in the long run.
He sat down next to Alice Longbottom. He reached out slowly. He couldn't help himself. He was a healer through and through. His eyes closed as he scanned her. There was so much pain. It was like every nerve in her body was on fire. Without realising what he was doing a golden glow surrounded his hand and travelled into Alice. He soothed the burning nerves slowly. Too quick a change could cause her harm. He did not want that. He caught a glimpse of her mind and pulled his mind-shields tighter. It was fractured. Slowly, his breathing became laboured, and he had to let go of her. As he opened his eyes, he could see his shaking hands.
Neville was standing next to him. "What happened Harry?" he asked.
Harry sighed. He knew he was going to have to explain himself. He looked around as a healer came by. He didn't want to talk about this in front of complete strangers. The healer checked on the Longbottoms. She looked at her findings and checked again. "This is a miracle," she said. "Alice is looking so much better. I don't know what has happened, but she has improved dramatically."
"Is that so?" Augusta said. She was looking at Harry. She wasn't blind. She had seen the magic leaving the teen.
"Yes, I … whatever did this… If it continues then who knows maybe, just maybe they could get better," the Healer said.
"I see," Augusta said.
They didn't talk about what Harry had done while they stood there with Alice and Frank. It wasn't until they sat down to eat lunch later that Augusta brought the subject up.
Harry sighed. "I… I have spent six years in another world," he said. He reached in under his shirt and deactivated the glamour. "I have been to Gringotts and the goblins have checked and confirmed that I am Harry Potter. I have learnt magic long lost to humans on our planet. The goblins know it because I travelled to the same planet that they came from once."
"I am a Master Healer and I am a Master of the Mind. Combined that means I can heal damage to the mind. I only did a quick check, but I think that Alice at the very least can be healed. It will take time, but I think it can be done," Harry said.
Augusta looked at the young man. "And you will do this?" she asked.
"If you allow me to, but It would have to be my alter ego Kato that actually does it. People would start asking questions otherwise," Harry said.
Augusta leaned back. She was watching the young man in front of her. "You say the goblins could do this too?" she asked.
"Possibly, but just because they have the same kind of magic I do, that doesn't mean that they can perform it the same as me. Magic and how it is taught has changed a lot since the goblins left Nirn," Harry said. "Just in the past few hundred years, it changed a lot. I could teach goblins to do what I can do certainly, but I'm not entirely sure that would benefit us right now."
Augusta nodded. "I see what you mean," she said. "I will want to confirm what you are saying."
"Of course," Harry said.
That led them to Gringotts after the meal. It didn't take them long to get the confirmation that Augusta wanted.
Harry was pulled aside and told that they could start offering the cure now, but if he wanted it confirmed by the Ministry they would have to do a control group first. Harry agreed that it might be a good idea to do and they agreed on a date for the first testing since he would need to be present. He would also need to come up with a story on who the creator of the cure was since he didn't want to claim it himself. That wouldn't be a problem for Harry. He knew how to speak about Rhavaniel as if she had died.
Augusta and Harry agreed to meet the very next day to introduce Kato to the Healers at St. Mungos He would fit the healing of Mr and Mrs Longbottom in with his schedule. For now, Fridays looked like the best day. He had two hours where he could be gone from the castle without anyone noticing.
As Augusta dropped Harry, now back in his glamour, and Neville off at Hogwarts, Neville turned to Harry and asked, "Are you going to tell Hermione about this?"
Harry nodded slowly. "That is the plan," he said. "I'll tell her."
Neville noticed that Harry didn't seem to be in a hurry though as he didn't do it that evening. He watched his friends with a thoughtful expression on his face. He didn't want to push Harry, but he felt like Hermione deserved to know what had happened.
27th of December, 1994.
Kato was standing in the lobby at St. Mungos early the next day. He had agreed to meet with Madam Longbottom to take over the care of her son and daughter-in-law. He greeted her as she arrived and the two of them headed upstairs. Augusta introduced him and he sat down, visibly this time, and scanned Frank before healing the worst of the nerve damage. The Healer on call was beside herself. No one had managed before.
Just like the day before, Kato was exhausted from the ordeal and could do little more that day, but he promised Augusta that he would hold weekly sessions from now on. He was determined to heal Neville's parents. They were still alive and if he could do something there was no reason for them to spend their lives as vegetables.
Frank and Alice had not reacted quite the same to the damage done to them. All in all, Frank looked like he had taken it better, his mind seemed more put together than hers. To explain it to Augusta Kato had told her to imagine their minds like puzzles. With loads of pieces holding the memories in place. Normally a mind was a nice picture. For Alice, it looked like someone had taken the whole puzzle and put it in a box before shaking that box until it was all a jumbled mess. Then they had started trying to put it back together again, but instead of looking at the pieces and figuring out where each piece belonged they had crammed them together and forced certain pieces to fit even though they didn't. With Frank, it looked more like someone had started putting the puzzle away and was slowly taking everything apart. He was getting worse. Alice was not.
Now Kato had to painstakingly put Alice's pieces back together and figure out a way to stop Franks from separating.
It was much more complicated than that, but it was the easiest way for Kato to explain what was going on.
Augusta had told him to start and to keep her updated, and Kato had told her he would not make any major decisions without speaking to her first.
They quickly agreed and walked their separate ways.
