Chapter 4: But Now There's You

Present time before City Hall:

Kyle had made the decision with Sarah's encouragement to contact his older brother and his Mother. Before work later today, he made his way to Beverly Hills to meet with Mitchell Reese.

A little surprised to see him at this early hour, Mitch escorted him into his penthouse suite. His brother appeared well off with stock market investments and their father's business in real estate, but both men enjoyed their work, well before the war. Mitch continued his father's work, while Kyle headed to college and then Quantico.

After shutting the door, Mitch approached him a little worried. "What's going on, Kyle? Your call sent up warning bells, but before you begin, I have something for you. The VA contacted me not long ago to give me these."

"What is it?" He sat down feeling worried.

He walked over to his desk, opened the drawer and came back with an envelope and a small box. "It's our father's legacy, meaning a letter to both of us along with photos he wanted us to see."

"I don't know if I'm ready for this." Kyle said.

"Go ahead, open it." He handed him the letter. "It's called closure, we need it."

Kyle opened the letter and read it aloud. "I didn't write the letter to Kyle because I knew he would tear it up, he's right, plus he's busy at Quantico. If you can find a way to let him know that I loved you both. You and Kyle deserved a better father than me. A father as good as I had. Thank you for helping me to raise him to be the man I could never be. Signed Daniel Reese."

With tears in his eyes. "What am I supposed to do with this?"

"As I said, it's closure. I'm glad you read it only do with it as you wish. But there's more." Mitch handed him the small box.

"No, what is it now?"

"The VA insisted that you have this. Open it, keep it, but it belongs to you." He watched him closely. "Kyle, our father made a lot of mistakes, but he didn't have to write that letter, but I'm happy he did. He wanted you to take care of your son better than he could, that's about it."

"I'll take it home and open it later. Thanks, Mitch," he said gratefully. Kyle sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Sorry to come by this early, but I have to tell you something. It's important."

"What is it?" Mitch asked and headed to the bar. "Coffee?"

Kyle sat down. "Sure, thanks." He wrung his hands, not sure about telling him.

Mitch frowned then handed him the coffee.

Kyle decided to blurt it out. "I'm from the future."

Mitch almost spit out his coffee. "What did you say?"

He placed the coffee on a small table, stood up and walked. "I'm from the future. You see, I arrived here five years ago, and I met Sarah, she was being targeted for termination by a dangerous cyborg because she's the mother of John Connor, part of the resistance in the future."

He can't make this up. "Back up, five years ago, but where were you?"

"In a coma for four years, but when I woke up, I had no memories, only of Sarah and her face; I had to find her."

"Okay, but why did they send you to save her?"

"John Connor sent me to save Sarah because he knew that she's his mother and I'm his father." At his stunned expression, he continued. "The idea was to stop her from having John, they wanted to kill her and that's when I arrived to protect her. We fell in love and that's when John was conceived." He paused. "I'm back now and I asked her to marry me and she accepted."

"I understand, but why do you want to get married? Can't you return to the future?"

"No, there's no way I could go back and besides I want to stay here with Sarah because they knew we would mate and create John. They also knew that I had a crush on her."

"Before you even met, but how is that possible?"

"John gave me a photograph and I couldn't take my eyes off of that photo. She's perfect and I want to marry her."

"But I thought you decided never to get married."

"That's before I met Sarah. She and I, well, we love each other very much." He sighed then explained his reasons. "Look, I've thought about it and I want her to be protected if anything happens to me." He couldn't look at him.

Now, Mitch felt worried. "What are you talking about?"

"I know it sounds unbelievable, but we managed to kill the cyborg but there could be more of them from the future to come here and try to kill her and her son, my son."

"What are you saying? You came from the future and impregnated Sarah?"

"Yes, she's the reason I came from the future. You see, the future is not set, but before I left, all of this was gone, destroyed. A computer system named Skynet became self-aware, took over and sent atomic weapons and the world was completely destroyed. I was part of the resistance against the cyborgs and John Connor sent me here from the future to protect Sarah. Her son, my son in the future saved humanity but the cyborgs wanted her dead because she is the mother of John Connor my son."

Mitch took all of that in. "That's an incredible story, but I can't tell anyone about this. Kyle, I don't think you should keep this from the family, but it is your secret to tell." He watched him closely. "You're worried for her safety and that's why you proposed?"

"Yes, I'm worried," Kyle replied.

"I can understand, but you're doing well financially, and our Dad left the family a fortune. Do you need money to tide you over? You don't have to put your life at risk for this country."

Kyle stood up and walked. "Don't even start, Mitch. We've had this discussion after I decided to join the military before I left college. But no, we're doing all right. Sarah's mother left her well off, we're fine." He thought about it. "I'm thinking of quitting my job at the auto repair shop. My hours are not working well plus I need to concentrate to return to the CIA to continue my search for the rogue agent who wants to kill me."

"Okay, you will need the money before you return to the Agency." He paused. "I'll write you the check. You will need this besides it's your inheritance. Here take it."

"Thanks, Mitch," he said and noticed the amount, then his eyes widened and slipped it inside his pocket.

"Okay, now, before we get more into this, you need to consider that the relationship you have with Sarah was forged from a highly endangered environment. I saw the news about the cyborg."

"Yes, we were fighting to stay together and then it happened; we fell in love." Kyle tried to explain his feelings.

"But now in a calmer setting with fewer distractions, it changes your dynamic and it could change your feelings; that's all I'm saying." At Kyle's silence, he continued. "I think you shouldn't jump into anything too soon, that's all."

"Yes, and I appreciate your advice," Kyle said. "But we are getting married and soon."

"What you're saying was years ago after the war. You need to be reminded. If anything happens to you, Sarah, me; everyone we'll be devastated." Kyle was still silent. "Don't forget that everyone knows how much Sarah means to you, and if anyone comes for you, they could come after her or anyone you care about."

"You're thinking of the rogue agent, Mark Anderson from Quantico. I told you about him." He paused. "I'm thinking of him too, and it's highly possible, he knows I'm from the future, the same as him." It wasn't a question.

"Hold on, you're both from the future?" That does make sense. "He blames you for his downfall; his reputation with the Government; all of it. That's why he hates you. He's out there somewhere waiting. You can't forget about him."

"Believe me; I haven't forgotten." He paused. "Have you heard anything?" Now, he was terribly worried.

"No, I haven't," he replied.

Kyle walked over to the window. "I know I shouldn't be concerned about Sarah and John's welfare, but it's on my mind all the time. I've even dreamed about losing them; not dreams exactly, nightmares."

Mitch followed him. "You have to keep the wedding a secret." He paused. "Oh, have you seen Mom since you woke up from the coma? She needs to know that you're fine now and you're a father."

"No, but you're right, I need to see her. How is she?"

"You know that our father left us years ago, but he died of a heart attack. She took it pretty bad but she's coping."

"I'll see her when I get some time. But I agree with the wedding, Sarah and I are planning to be married quickly with a Justice of the Peace at City Hall. No one else will know accept you and her cousin. It's happening right after we move up-country to be safe, and I want you there to stand up for us like a best man." He smiled at his brother's reaction.

Mitch stared at him. "Like a best man?" He asked stunned.

"Of course, like a best man." He still looked skeptical. "Come on Mitch, Sarah and I have been together off and on for several years now. I've wanted to marry her since the day we met."

Mitch chuckled, not believing it. "You're serious, aren't you?"

"Yeah, I am, very serious." Mitch still looked skeptical. "I suppose you've never felt that way about anyone."

"I'm not sure what you mean," he said then sat down and sipped his coffee.

"Oh, I see; it must be a sore subject." Kyle sat down. "Who is she?"

"You don't know her," Mitch thoughtfully replied, thinking of his past with Katherine.

"Tell me about her," Kyle said pushing for answers.

Mitch sighed, leaned back in his chair. "Her name was Katherine."

"Where is she?" Then he had a thought. "Is she dead?"

"No, she's not dead," Mitch replied.

Relieved, Kyle asked, "And you stay connected? It ended as you two being friends?"

Agitated, Mitch stood up and walked over to his desk and shuffled papers around. "I don't want to talk about her; not anymore; besides she's not exactly available."

Kyle followed him. He thought about Sarah and her cousin. "What about Dottie, Sarah's cousin? I could introduce you?" Kyle asked, but then Mitch looked up from his desk.

"Dottie?" Intrigued, Sarah is lovely and she has a cousin.

Kyle smiled. "Come to dinner after the wedding and you two can talk."

"Well, I don't know."

Kyle decided not to push. "Think about it and I'll be in touch." He turned to go. "Oh, about being like a best man, you never answered me." He paused. "No speech is required."

Mitch chuckled but inside he felt honored. "You're serious about this?"

"Yes, I am you game?" Kyle smiled at him.

"Sure, I'm game," he replied. They shook hands.

Kyle smiled then gathered his father's legacy items then he's gone.

Now on his bike, he headed to see his Mother, Beatrice Reese. After a surprise welcome, he entered the house and she looked exactly how he remembered her.

"Hey, Mom, I'm sorry about not contacting you," Kyle said. They sat down on the sofa. He went on to explain about the coma and no memories and about meeting Sarah again. He explained that Mitch also knows everything including the secret of being a man from the future.

"I'm only glad you came to see me and explained your whereabouts. Wait, a man from the future?" Beatrice asked stunned..

"Yes, I'll explain later at dinner. Oh, I have photos for you." He pulled out photos of John, his son and also Sarah.

"Ok, I'll look forward to your explanations. Oh, Kyle, he's adorable. Sarah is lovely. I cannot wait to meet them."

"Sarah and I are planning a wedding soon, also a special dinner after the wedding. It's hush hush, only two people to stand up for us, Mitch and Dottie, Sarah's cousin."

She understood, but an invitation to dinner was accepted. Staring at the photos of her grandson, then he gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Goodbye Mom. I'm sorry to run off like this but I have an appointment. I'll see you soon."

"Goodbye son." She watched him ride away.

City Hall, late morning:

After Sarah and Dottie searched for wedding and bride's maid dresses, they headed to City Hall. Agitated and worried, Sarah glanced at her watch again. "He'll be here." She told her cousin, but she wasn't sure thinking of his weird hours at his job.

"Of course, he will," Dottie said.

Twenty minutes later, and now inside the office, the Clerk's assistant approached her. "Ms. Connor, the Clerk is ready for you. Are you two getting married?"

Sarah sighed; Dottie chuckled. "No, my fiancé is running late," Sarah replied and followed her.

"That's all right. You can start the process and your friend can let us know once he arrives," the Clerk's assistant said.

"I'll wait here," Dottie said.

"Thanks, Dottie." Glancing over her shoulder, Sarah followed the lady.

Five minutes later, Kyle arrives, a bit out of breath. "Hey, Dottie; is Sarah inside?"

"Yes, she is," Dottie replied. She stood up and touched his arm. "Before you go in, can we talk for a minute?"

"But Sarah is waiting for me," he replied.

"Yes, she is and you're late, very late," Dottie said.

Kyle stood up straighter. "She knows it can't be helped."

"Yes, she knows, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't need you or worry about you."

"Dottie, please; can we talk about this later? Please?"

"Sure, go ahead," Dottie sadly replied.

"Thank you." He said and hurried inside.

Sarah appeared almost done with her paperwork, then the assistant escorted Kyle into the Clerk's office. She's sitting opposite her, talking. "Oh, Kyle, you're here." He took her hand, leaned down and kissed her cheek. "Kyle, this is City Clerk, Betty Patterson."

"Mr. Reese, it's nice to meet you." She stood up and shook his hand.

Kyle felt relieved. "You know about me?"

"Yes, I can assure you, considering what Ms. Connor told me, I see no reason why that would cause problems with acquiring a license."

Both relieved, Kyle had one question. "How long do we have to wait before we can get married?"

"Twenty-four hours," she replied.

The couple glanced at each other. "Twenty-four hours?" They spoke at the same time.

She chuckled then handed Kyle the paperwork attached to a clipboard. "Fill out these forms. I'll be right back." She left them alone.

"Where were you?" Sarah asked.

"I went to see Mitch, my brother, then I spoke to my boss about getting a motorcycle to move around town only back and forth for work; that's all," he replied not looking at her.

At hearing about the motorcycle, her heart constricted. "Isn't that dangerous?"

"Yes, but I know how to ride," he replied.

"Were you going to tell me about this meeting?"

"Yes, I'll tell you everything, but I don't want to talk about the motorcycle or my brother; not here."

"Alright," she said now terribly concerned.

A few minutes later, he finished the paperwork. "Are you okay? Are you tired?"

"I'm alright, but I thought you weren't going to make it."

"Sarah, you know I wanted to be here no matter what and I made it."

She had to smile. "Yeah, you did." She touched his cheek. "I'm glad."

"I don't think Dottie felt pleased with me."

"Oh, well, she's worried about everything."

"I have to wonder why you told her about me." Kyle thoughtfully said.

"I had to tell someone. She's my blood; my first cousin, plus we are getting married; she should know, and she agreed to stand up for us."

"And your Uncle David?" Kyle asked and watched her face turn into a mask of pain.

"I can't; I can't talk to him. He won't understand any of it."

He placed his arm around her shoulder. "We'll be alright. It's been the two of us for a while now well since I returned."

"I know, but it's time, Kyle; we need Dottie in our lives. I was thinking of telling Uncle David your secret only if you agree, but no we don't need him at the wedding."

"Oh, that's fine and you're right, we do need family," he said and thought of a way to bring their families together, a dinner after the wedding at the house.

After getting the license, they left the office. Out on the street, Kyle mentioned dinner with Dottie, her father, his Mother, and his brother would come to dinner tomorrow night and meet him. His brother asked about her.

"Did he now?" Dottie asked, intrigued.

"Yes, he did. He's a nice guy, most of the time, and besides you two should meet, and you could get along," Kyle said.

Most of the time? Well, at least he won't be boring, she thought. "Alright, I'll come. What time?" Dottie asked.

"Seven is fine after the ceremony," Sarah replied.

"I'll see you guys later," she said. She hugged her cousin, then she left.

"She's still mad at me for being late."

"Don't worry about it." They walked side by side heading for a quick bite to eat.

"Before we head inside, will we have a best man, finding one isn't going to be a problem; is it?"

"Why would you ask that?" Sarah asked only slightly sarcastic.

"You see, I was going to tell you tonight. My older brother; he's 5 years older than me."

"How old are you; I never asked?"

"I'm 26, Sarah and you?"

"I'm 24 Kyle. But you told your brother the truth, didn't you, that you're from the future?"

"Yes, I told him not to tell anyone then I asked him to stand up for us like a best man. He accepted."

"I guess that will work. What's his name?"

"His name is Mitch; he's not married and he's 31. How old is Dottie?"

"She's 27," she replied. "They could work."

"Good, I'll call him about dinner after the ceremony."

"You do that."

Kyle sensed she wasn't happy about it, Mitch knowing the truth; but I trust him; he won't tell anyone else.

After lunch and back at the restaurant, Sarah was mumbling and cursing to herself, slamming utensils, pots and pans. Sarah wasn't sure about Mitch being like a best man or knowing the truth about Kyle, but Mitch having the secret is concerning.

Shaking her head, she tried to concentrate and get back to work, then an hour later, Kyle walked in. He made a face that he wanted to speak to her.

He followed her to the employee's lounge. No one else was around. She wanted to understand why he told Mitch, but with the wedding would help, plus the dinner afterwards too.

"Hi, can we talk?" He asked.

"Sure, what is it?"

"I wanted to apologize for not telling you about Mitch or my mother. They were quick decisions, but he and I were close. I realized that I needed family in my life and you felt the same. Anyway, our father left us when we were both younger, then he died after a heart attack and Mitch took over the business. He insisted and handed me a check and I accepted." He showed her the check for one million dollars.

"Wow, which was generous of him. He didn't need to do that but the money will come in handy. I felt the same way about family and having Dottie felt right for me too." She went into his arms. "Are we good?"

He pulled away. "Yes, we're good. Now about the dinner, can I help with arrangements, cooking anything?"

"Sure, cooking would be a big help. It's after the wedding."

"I'll open it now." Inside were his father's Purple Heart, photos of only them playing and walking together with him as a child, and then photos of them at a Divisional game before the World Series. "He loved baseball and I did too." Eyes shining, he closed the box.

"Mitch felt you should have it. How are you feeling?"

"He said it was for closure and I believed him."

She took his hand. "Let's go home."

"Ok, but why don't we have an early pre-wedding dinner out, the three of us? How's that?"

"Perfect!"
