Chapter 6: Through the Storm
Still at the house:
Walking towards the bedroom, Sarah reminded him about the Lodge and that it was the beginning of the week. She made a quick call to postpone their check-in but there's no issue with a late arrival but it needs to be today.
"I remember, and thanks for reminding me." Kyle said. "Let me unpack and we can get a few hours at least." He picked up his bags and began to unpack, but he had more to say. "Honey, last night I dreamed of being far away from my family. I had these thoughts of that I could be hurt or worse. I'm not afraid to die, but to put you through that again, I couldn't do it."
She didn't know what to say but she understood. "Oh, Kyle, I had that idea that you would be hurt or you could…die."
"Yeah, me too." Now undressed and ready to get some sleep. "My thoughts of you and John alone and the terminator could come back and hurt my family and." He couldn't finish.
"It was only a dream." She held up her arms and he's in her arms holding her close.
He pulled away. "This is where I belong with you and our son, nowhere else."
Her eyes watered. "Yes, you belong here with us."
Then the kisses and words of love and happiness continued for several hours.
In bed holding each other, the phone rang. He sighed. "I'll get it."
"Hello," he said and sat up.
"Kyle, this is Bert. Where are you, and why didn't you get on that plane?"
"I changed my mind and let the team search for Mark, besides I have suspicions where he is and they don't need me."
"I see, well, this changes everything."
Kyle frowned and put the call on the speaker. "What do you mean? I gave them coordinates; they'll be fine."
"Yes, they're fine as far as we know, but what if they get lost and." He hesitated.
"Bert, they're an excellent team and they've worked together for years, at least that is what you told me."
"I know what I told you but I'm concerned for their safety."
"Bert, they have communicators and drones to help them. Let me know if anything goes wrong, now I need to go." He hung up.
"Why is Bert upset about you changing your mind? It happens." Sarah seemed confused.
Agitated and worried, instead of answering her, he left the bed and took a quick shower to cool down.
She followed him. "What are you thinking?"
He left the shower, dried off and added a robe. "I don't know but I have a feeling it's me he wanted on that mission."
Now in a robe, she asked, "Oh no, is it about your secret, that you're from the future?"
"That's part of it yes," he replied. Now fully dressed, in the kitchen, he tried to cook by fixing eggs for French toast, cereal for John and tried to think. "It may have something to do with the dreams of the future I've been having since I woke up from the coma."
Now fully dressed, she thought about it. "But who knows about your dreams? I haven't told anyone."
"The only person who knows about me, my dreams, all of it is… Mark or Bert both of them may know."
"Are you making this up? Bert doesn't know."
"Think about it. He's too upset by me not going overseas to find him."
"Are you saying that Bert is corrupt?"
"Yes, but we need to find out the truth. Can you take John to daycare? Meet me at the Agency. We need to confront Bert."
As they began to dress and pulled John out of bed, he dressed and had him eat, she had more questions.
"Where's the proof of any of this? Kyle, it's conjecture and we have no proof."
They began to eat. "The team will find proof; I know it." He had more questions. "Did you think about selling your part of the restaurant? I know you invested with your Mom's heritage." He sipped his juice.
"Yes, I did invest, but I may not receive much but no harm in asking."
"I'm sorry honey, but we do need the money. I haven't gotten my first check from the Agency, but once those checks come monthly, we'll be fine."
"Okay, we should be okay after I receive money from the other investments, your inheritance is safe for emergencies for now but you're right, we'll be fine."
Now she hurried John to finish eating and they headed out. "Kyle, before we head over to the Agency, we need to check-in at the Lodge."
"Yeah, we can do that now," he agreed and after dropping off John, they headed to the Lodge to check-in. While driving, Sarah asked about the headaches.
"You haven't said anything since that first week. Can I assume you're fine now?"
"Yes, I'm fine, no more headaches. But I did call the hospital and told my doctors there's no need for me to come back for a follow-up visit."
"Okay, I'm glad, but I was worried."
"Thanks, honey. Speaking of doctors, when was your last check-up?"
"A few months before you came back."
"You did say that you haven't been with anyone since that night, and." He hesitated.
"Are you asking about having another child?"
"We haven't talked about it, but it was only a thought. Oh, we're here, this is nice and large." They checked in but no sooner than after they finished unpacking, Sarah had more to say about having another child.
"I've never thought about it. I had John but he wasn't planned and I was far too busy with raising him alone and."
He came closer and pulled her close. "As I said it was only a thought."
"Ok, we should head over to the Agency and confront Bert."
He touched her cheek. "Sure, let's go."

Meanwhile, at the Agency:
"Damnit, Kyle!" Bert hung up and cursed a blue streak, then he called his assistant. "When's the next flight to Frankfurt, Germany?"
"Check on that," she replied and left his office. "The flight leaves in three hours."
"I'm leaving, but I'll call you with my plans."
She frowned and watched him leave in a hurry.
Two hours later, at the airport, about to board a flight to catch Kyle's team before they landed, Bert called Brad's cell phone.
"It's my boss. Hi, Bert." He tried to act normally. He put the call on speakers, but he and his team were ready to leave.
"Mister, you are in serious trouble."
"Look, Bert; we told you that we had to do this; please understand. What's that sound?"
"I'm at the airport, ready to board a flight to Germany. Commercial jets fly ten times faster than any private jet. When your flight lands, arrest warrants are ready. Are you alone?" No answer. "They will be arrested too."
"If you arrest us, then it will be on your head if Kyle finds out what you did."
Mitch, Jeff, and Katherine stared at each other speechless.
That gave Bert pause. "Why isn't Kyle with you?"
"He's working on another mission and it doesn't look good for you." Brad taunted him. Everyone had their mouths hanging open.
"What did you say?" Bert asked stunned.
"Kyle told me and he did it in a dream. Woke up, and it was clear to him where to find Mark."
"Oh, geez, not one of his dreams again?" Bert inwardly sighed.
"It's his way of communicating with his inner thoughts and fears. This time he told his wife; he's at home and we know where to find Mark." A moment, then, "Are you there? Bert, speak to me."
"After you land, you have 48 hours; that's all I can give you," Bert said furiously.
"Thank you, Bert." He hung up. Now on board, everyone buckled up and they took off.
Now in the air, Mitch was the first to speak. "How long have you known about Kyle?"
"He told me not long ago after he returned to the Agency, but Bert only found out because of a recent mission," Brad replied.
"Let me get this straight, Kyle told Sarah about the dream that he's in trouble, but he decided not to go on the mission, and now what do we do?" Katherine couldn't believe it but she thought about it. "I get it now because of his dream, he decided not to go on this mission. Is that it, now we continue the mission to find Mark?"
"Yes, Kyle is a psychic sometimes, but he believes in his dreams and besides times are desperate."
"I'll say times are desperate alright." That was Jeff. "Are you a psychic?" He asked Mitch.
"No, I'm not. That's why it was shocking to believe any of it. You may not know this, but Kyle was in a coma for four years before he found Sarah." He said, utterly amazed at the power of his gift. If only we had known months before all this time had passed. He thought.
"I know what you're thinking. If only he had communicated before now," Brad said and watched everyone who was thinking the same thing.
"These types of abilities usually run in families, but you, Mitch, are you sure you're not a psychic?" Katherine asked curiously.
"Yes, I'm sure, but our father may have been."
"Why would you say that?" Katherine asked, still curious.
"After he divorced our mother, before he died, he came to us, and explained how tormented he was about having to leave, because he knew he would only cause us pain down the road, and then he left."
"Wow, and you think he saw the future?" Katherine asked.
"Yes, I think it could be true," he sadly replied. Mitch was thinking about Kyle and his desperate need to marry Sarah and to cancel this trip because he knew the future and that they would be separated, indefinitely. "Oh, no, it must be true," he murmured to himself. "We will find Mark because Kyle gave us proof," Mitch told them firmly.
"Yes, we will," Katherine chimed in her belief as well.
"Can't this thing fly any faster?" That was Brad.
Ding, ding, ding. The captain had an update. "We're an hour away from London, then after we refuel, we'll arrive in Frankfurt in twelve hours."

The Cold War timeline:
The timeline of the main events of the Cold War, a state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union, its allies in the Warsaw Pact and later the People's Republic of China).
The Origins of the Cold War are widely regarded to lie most directly in the relations between the Soviet Union and the allies (the United States, Great Britain and France) in the years 1945–1947. Those events led to the Cold War that endured for half a century.
This is the atmosphere our heroes have stepped into, in their efforts to alleviate the tension between the United States, various allies, and other world leaders, intent on keeping the cold war alive, meaning as globalization tools more intricately involved in economic development, the more those tools need to be protected.
At an Air Force base, just outside the city, Brad's team consisted of three agents now, including himself, as well as FBI agents, Jeff James, Katherine Davis, and finally Mitchell Reese, Kyle's brother. A private plane, commissioned for this trip, wasn't extremely large or cumbersome. After boarding and storing their gear, they buckled up, and took off cruising at twenty thousand feet.
Once at cruising altitude, Mitch spoke up. "We should reach our destination in about twelve hours."
"East Germany?" Katherine asked.
"Yes, more specifically, Frankfurt," Brad replied.
"Why Frankfurt?" Jeff asked.
"Unfortunately, unemployment is a constant reality in this part of Germany; some towns fight 25 percent unemployment rates. But small businesses are bubbling up across the region, and vendors here seem eager to please. That will give us a starting point then we'll branch out from there. It may take a while to find him, but we will," Katherine replied.
"Excellent," Brad said. "I haven't been there in about five years."
"When was that exactly?" Jeff asked curiously about his service.
"Well, let's see. I joined the Army right out of school, about twenty years ago, then I went to Quantico, and the rest is history."
Katherine chuckled. "Oh, it was historical; if I recall."
Brad felt offended. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
Mitch chuckled at their banter. "What happened?"
"It's Brad's story to tell." Katherine let that hang.
"Okay, let's hear it," Mitch said.
"It's nothing, but I did sort of punch an officer."
"Oh, no, and you lived to talk about it?" Mitch asked a bit stunned.
He sighed. "I served my time, but I wasn't discharged."
"How did you manage that?" Mitch asked.
"His Father was an Admiral," Katherine replied, which got a glare from Brad.
"Oh, I see," Mitch said.
"Guys, we should get some rest. We have a long day ahead of us," Jeff suggested.
"Good idea," Brad said and tried to get comfortable. And then, they rested.

Now in Frankfurt, Germany:
Hours later, under radar, they landed outside of Frankfurt, at a very discrete location found by the drone, the plane took off and returned to America. It's the middle of the night, and our heroes, dressed as soldiers without any identifying markings, loaded down with tracking devices, hidden weapons and ammunition. It was the drone miles above them that enabled them to move in the right direction to find Mark, rescue him, as well as any other civilians or soldiers held against their will, but it would take time.
After leaving the jet, the team checked in with customs, they left the airport, and headed to a hotel, off the beaten track. As per data and the team's last location of Mark, they checked in and took a few tours to familiarize themselves with the area which took several hours.
"Now what?" Brad asked getting a bit nervous with military personnel all over this part of town.
"We're tourists, but I think we should circulate a photograph of Mark to a few merchants and vendors in the area," Katherine replied.
"Do you think that's wise; he is a soldier," Jeff asked.
"People don't know that. We'll only say that we're looking for him; we won't give them his name, only that he's an American and we're worried about him."
"That could work," Katherine said. They continued the rest of the day circulating Mark's photograph and left a phone number at the hotel to reach them. Her ability to speak the language went a long way to helping them, meaning they trusted her.

Time for a Rescue:
Meanwhile, in a small, evacuated town, a mile outside of Frankfurt, Agent Konrad Zuse, a military leader, and a spy, took note of his surroundings. He's been doing this for a long time, twenty years. Tired of the infighting, war, death and destruction, and it's wearing thin. Checking his devices, he realized that Agent Mark Anderson's rescuers were close, but he was prepared. He notified his officers; they were hidden just outside ready and willing to kill them.
Agent Mark Anderson had been captured months ago, and after they entered a restricted area, and now he felt like a complete and utter failure. Besides him, soldiers he didn't know, were also captured and tortured for information, but those unwilling to talk were killed. Agent Anderson was not like the others. Top secret information was given freely, but Agent Konrad had a feeling he was being played. He would find out soon enough.
"Your friends are here," Konrad spoke to Mark in broken English, sitting on the floor at his feet, with a collar around his neck, chained to his side.
"They're not my friends," Mark said.
"They came for you; are you not pleased?" Konrad eyed him closely.
"I'd rather stay here," he admitted. If he returned home, he would be sent back to prison to serve out his sentence: life in prison with no possibility of parole.
"Is that so, well, that can be arranged." Konrad wasn't surprised by that statement. He's a criminal, wanted by his government. Now, facing an odd dilemma, he stroked his chin thinking whether to release him or kill him. It would stop the fight, and save lives, or maybe not.
Mark didn't say anything. After leaving the states, Mark realized he had a conscious. It's Kyle's fault that he felt this way. Once he returned to Europe, he had hoped to restore his reputation by continuing his work as a spy for the other side, but weeks later, he was captured and put in chains, tortured for top secret information, but of course, he had none.
Sitting here chained like an animal, he meant every word. He wanted to stay. He surrendered days ago, then told Agent Konrad all his secrets, every lie imaginable. Revenge would be sweet; that was his first thought, but now he wasn't sure. After he returned from the future, he knew Kyle was a hero, not like him, but he wanted to be like him, always had, and now he's nothing but a traitor and a murderer.
"Lock him up and keep an eye on him," Konrad instructed the guards. He stood up and left the building on his way to kill them, but he was pulled aside by his next in command, Agent Karl.
"I told you to stay out of sight," Konrad said, not pleased to see him lurking about.
"You need me; why do you insist on confronting them alone and unprotected?"
He managed not to laugh. "These people do not concern me. I'm not afraid of them. I suggest you leave right now. Get to your post!" Konrad felt tired of Karl always in his face, always questioning his judgment, only tired and fed up.
"You're going to regret this," Agent Karl said and left him alone, but he would be watching his downfall then he'll be in my debt.
Once back in his cell, Mark realized this place was just another prison, but at least back home, he had somewhere to go, but not here; back home. There truly was nowhere to go as he covered his ears; the screams went on and on, until finally they quieted. Pondering the shocking truth that Kyle had come this far for him, to rescue him; he couldn't believe it, but it could be true.
Outside and out of sight, the team's plan was set into action. Even though the screams had stopped, they continued using the heat-tracking firearm. The main plan consisted of Jeff, with his technology, also out of sight, then he would enter the building undetected. Now was the time. The doors opened and blatantly he walked inside. Once inside and taken to Konrad, he stood before him unafraid.
Konrad didn't know what to make of this one. Mark never mentioned him. "Who are you?"
"I'm here to rescue Agent Mark Anderson, and anyone else you've captured and tortured."
"You can take him; I have no need of him," Konrad said. "Where are your friends; you're wasting my time."
"You're going to deal with me; no one else," Jeff said then raised his techno firearm ready to do battle or die in the process.
