Link: ...Lady Emmeryn?

Emmeryn: ...H-Hello?

Link: Is this a bad time, Your Grace? I... need to talk with you, but... I don't want to be a bother.

Emmeryn: ...No... bother.

Link: Ah, good... So... Chrom sent me... He asked me to watch over you when he's busy.

Emmeryn: Watch... over?

Link: Y-Yeah... You're always on his mind, I'm sure... and he's protective of you, especially after losing you once already... I'll be around to defend and assist you whenever your brother isn't able.

Emmeryn: ...I... worry him...

Link: N-Not in a bad way! He's much happier worrying about you than being without you... Believe me, you brighten up his life, Your Grace.

Emmeryn: ...Mmm... And... you?

Link: ...Me?... I'm... overjoyed that you're with us, Lady Emmeryn... It's truly a blessing that we're even having this conversation.

Emmeryn: ...You... do not... mind?... Watching over...?

Link: No! Not at all!... Chrom trusted me enough to ask this of me... If you accept, I would be honored to keep you safe.

Emmeryn: T-Thank you... Ah... Um... Your... name?

Link: Oh! Sorry... My name's Link... We'd met in the past, but it was before you'd lost your memory.

Emmeryn: ...I... see...

Link: You're okay with this, then?... With me guarding you?... We've only just been reintroduced... so if you'd feel more comfortable with someone else, I understand.

Emmeryn: Please... Stay.

Link: Okay, if... If that's what you want... and if you need anything at all, just let me know, Your Grace.

Emmeryn: ...I am... not... Exalt...

Link: Uh... Well, yeah, you're right... Chrom's the Exalt now, but-

Emmeryn: Too... formal... Call me... Emmeryn.

Link: O-Oh! I... My apologies, Your Gr- I mean, E-Emmeryn... Sorry, I guess that makes sense... You wouldn't want to be called that... H-Hey, are you laughing?

Emmeryn: Mmm! You are... cute, Link... and so... kind.

Link: Uh... Thanks... Geez, now I understand how you were able to win people over so easily...

Link: Anything on your mind today, Emmeryn?... If you have any concerns, you can trust me with them... I'm here to listen, too.

Emmeryn: …

Link: I-If you feel comfortable, I mean... I'm not trying to pressure you or anything.

Emmeryn: Link... I am... sorry... I cannot... speak... easily...

Link: H-Hey, don't worry about that! You don't need to speak, Emmeryn.

Emmeryn: You are... sure?

Link: Positive... You never need to force yourself to talk... Certainly not on my behalf.

Emmeryn: A-All... right.

Link: Y'know, in the past, I was afraid to talk to others... People used to think I was mute, if you can believe that.

Emmeryn: ...Mute?

Link: Weird, huh? Living in this world and being around so many people... I've learned to open up more... Back in Hyrule, though, I always kept to myself... I traveled with a partner, and I always made her do the talking for me... I used to be so shy.

Emmeryn: You've... grown.

Link: Yeah... I suppose I have... Point is, you don't have to talk around me... I know our circumstances aren't the same... You would speak more if you could, and I didn't even want to speak... But don't struggle just to fill the silence... I happen to like the silence, if I'm being honest.

Emmeryn: O-Okay... I will not... speak... but... may I... listen?

Link: ...Listen?... To who? Me?

Emmeryn: Mmm... Can you... share stories?

Link: Oh... Well, sure... Uh... Hey, how about I tell you about when we first met? It was more than three years ago, now.

Emmeryn: Yes... Please.

Link: It's an interesting memory of mine... In a way, you might've saved me, Emmeryn.

Emmeryn: I... saved...?

Link: Heh, that's right... Chrom, Lissa, and Frederick were patrolling south of Ylisse that day... They came across Robin lying unconscious in the middle of the field... and not long after that, they found me in exactly the same way.

Emmeryn: Strange... and suspicious...

Link: Unfortunately, yeah... You're not the only one to think so... Luckily, us mysterious vagabonds were given a chance to prove ourselves... We helped them fight off bandits that were pillaging a small town, and we battled against a pack of the monsters that we now call "Risen".

Emmeryn: Was that... enough?

Link: Not enough for everyone... Your siblings trusted us, of course, but when we arrived in Ylisstol, many of your advisors wouldn't grant us that same mercy... They demanded that we be locked away and questioned.

Emmeryn: ...And... me?

Link: I told you my story... that I was a hero from a foreign world... You seemed hesitant but willing to hear me out... When I showed you the mark of the Triforce that I bear, however, you were... caught off guard, I think.

Emmeryn: T-Tri... force?

Link: This symbol on the back of my hand. You asked to see it up close... The moment you held my hand, you let out a gasp, and you told everyone in the room that I was to be cooperated with... I remember what you said clearly... "I have strong reason to believe that this man can be trusted."... I don't know if you recognized the Triforce, but it was thanks to your words that I was allowed to fight for the Shepherds.

Emmeryn: ...Mmm...

Link: You vouched for me... Gave me your trust... Without you, who knows where I'd be?... For that, I'll always owe you.

Emmeryn: Your hand... May I...?

Link: Oh... Y-Yeah, sure...

Emmeryn: ...A-Ah... You... Amazing!...

Link: Hah! Wow, you reacted just like your past self did... Do you notice something weird about that symbol?

Emmeryn: I feel... warmth... and light... Link, you... are good... You are... pure.

Link: ...It's a beautiful day, isn't it?... You picked the perfect time for a walk.

Emmeryn: Yes... It is beautiful...

Link: Would you... like to hold my hand again? You seem really fascinated with it, for some reason.

Emmeryn: ...You... do not mind?

Link: Uh, n-no, I don't... Other people have seen us, though... and Lissa might have overreacted a bit... She was pretty mad before I explained myself.

Emmeryn: L-Lissa?... She was mad?... Why?

Link: She thought I was... making advances on you... Untoward advances...

Emmeryn: ...O-Oh! I... am sorry, Link... I-

Link: Hey, it's all good. I cleared things up with her... We can hold hands as much as you want.

Emmeryn: ...Haha... I... like that...

Link: Can I ask you more about this?... You must be able to feel some sort of... power, right?... It's the hand that bears the mark of the Triforce that you're drawn to, so...

Emmeryn: Yes... I feel... a powerful light... It is soothing... Familiar...

Link: Interesting... You might be on the cusp of recalling a memory... Maybe it's that memory of when we first met... The one I told you about before.

Emmeryn: When I try... to remember... My head... At times, there is... great pain...

Link: That... breaks my heart to hear.

Emmeryn: With you, though... the pain goes away.

Link: ...Oh, wow...

Emmeryn: I often have... nightmares... of falling... and hurting.

Link: Y-You do?

Emmeryn: I wonder... if they are... memories.

Link: I'm sorry, Emmeryn, but I'm... not sure how much I'm allowed to tell you... of your past, I mean.

Emmeryn: It is okay... I do not... need... to know... You already help... so much.

Link: Would I be an even greater help if I... I don't know... sat by you while you slept? You could hold my hand, and... maybe those nightmares wouldn't plague you anymore?

Emmeryn: Hee hee! You are... silly, Link... What would... they think?

Link: ...Ah... Th-That's true... Chrom puts a lot of faith in me, but that'd be pushing my luck...

Emmeryn: I will be... all right, Link.

Link: But those nightmares... They sound terrible, and if you ever make progress on recovering your lost memories... I fear they might get worse.

Emmeryn: ...May I... confess something... to you?

Link: Yes, Emmeryn... Anything.

Emmeryn: My memories... They are not... so important.

Link: You're sure about that?

Emmeryn: Yes, I... dream of going... away... Somewhere... far away.

Link: You want to leave the Shepherds?

Emmeryn: Not now... but someday.

Link: What about your family?... Chrom and Lissa... You'd want them to go with you, right?

Emmeryn: *sigh* I... see the pain... and loss... on their faces... They see what I have... become... They long for... my improvement... but the expectations are... heavy.

Link: …

Emmeryn: I wish to start... anew... but I am afraid... I may not be... ready... I may never be... ready.

Link: ...And here I thought Princess Zelda was the pinnacle of wisdom and grace... Her kind soul could win the hearts of her people like no one else I'd ever met... but you embody those traits even more.

Emmeryn: ...Win the people's hearts?

Link: That's right... You shouldn't worry about being "ready", because no matter where you go, you'll find the help you need, Emmeryn... You're a beacon of hope, with or without your memories... The people will support you. They'll lend you their hands when you need them most, just as I've lent you mine... You'll find the life you're looking for, and I'm certain of that.

Emmeryn: Link... You made it.

Link: Hey, Emm... Yeah, I got the letter you sent... I wasn't expecting something so dramatic from you, though... "I'll be waiting for you on the hill behind the abandoned village at midnight. We have much to speak of."... I thought maybe it was a prank...

Emmeryn: Hmhm! Did I... worry you?

Link: Heh, maybe just a little... You sure picked a secluded time and place. You must have something important on your mind, huh?

Emmeryn: Yes... Very much so... I am anxious to tell you... so I wanted to meet somewhere... private.

Link: No problem here... Nothing makes me happier than hearing you talk, so you can share whatever you'd like with me... I'll always listen.

Emmeryn: May I... have your hand once more? You... give me the strength... to face my doubts.

Link: Of course.

Emmeryn: ...I have decided... that after Grima's defeat... I will leave Ylisse.

Link: Mmm... You sound confident in that decision... Some will oppose your wishes, no doubt, but... not me... If this is the future you want for yourself, then I... I support it.

Emmeryn: My dear brother and sister... I revealed my plans to them earlier... They are sad... yet joyful... They understand my desire... and have accepted it.

Link: ...Honestly, I'm shocked they took it so well.

Emmeryn: I have learned much of my past from them... Of who I once was... My previous role as Exalt brought many... pressures upon me... As I am now, I... do not wish for those pressures any longer... I told Chrom of my desire to... distance myself from my past life... even if only temporarily... He agrees that it may prove... beneficial.

Link: That's...wonderful, Emm... This is a huge step for you, and-

Emmeryn: Link... Your face... That is not an expression of joy.

Link: …

Emmeryn: Look at me, my friend... What troubles you?... You support my decision... yes?... Was that a lie?

Link: It's not a lie... I will respect your decision, I promise you... but I'm not happy that you're leaving. You're definitely right about that.

Emmeryn: ...Why?

Link: I... I'm not ready for this to be over... This... bond we share... I don't know how you see me, Emmeryn. To you, maybe I'm a friend, a guardian, or just a servant... Maybe you even see me as something more... I'd like to think so, anyway... No matter what our relationship is, though, I'm... just not ready for it to end.

Emmeryn: ...What would you ask of me, Link?... What do you desire?

Link: ...I want to be with you... It doesn't make a difference where that is... I realize that I'm being selfish, but this is the truth... That's all that I want.

Emmeryn: Well then... Please let me tell you... about my other decision... that I wished for you to hear tonight.

Link: ...Hmm?

Emmeryn: My decision to leave Ylisse... was not all I talked to Chrom and Lissa about... I also told them... of my friendship with a man... A man who was tasked with protecting me... I told them of how... we had grown close... of how there is no one in my life that I trust more... And finally... I told them of my love for this man... and my desire for him to always... stand by my side.

Link: ...You really feel that way?

Emmeryn: My siblings both... They were grinning ear to ear at my confession!... They assured me that you are... "hopelessly in love" with me... I needed to hear that from you, though... before I could believe it.

Link: *sigh*... Well, they're right... I didn't know my crush on you was so obvious... If Chrom was able to notice, then I must be an open book...

Emmeryn: However, I am... surprised... Do you not long for your home?... You would travel with me... instead of returning to Hyrule ?

Link: ...You remember what you said to me before? About "starting anew"?... That kinda struck a cord with me... It made me think of my life back home and how the people see me... They revere me... and I am a hero, so I guess they aren't wrong to... but I never asked for adoration... That's not why I saved them.

Emmeryn: Their love for you... has become a pressure?

Link: Yeah, I suppose so... I wish I could have saved Hyrule while keeping my identity hidden... That's why starting a new life with you is even more appealing. I won't be known as a hero anymore.

Emmeryn: I understand... but I must say one more thing... You know that I... am no longer the Exalt... The powerful, graceful leader who "saved" you... I am not that person... and I may never be... You are okay with this?

Link: I'm more than okay with that, Emm. The woman you used to be is not the woman I fell in love with... You are... You are the woman who has given my life new direction, so don't worry yourself with comparisons to your past self... I only care about you as you are.

Emmeryn: ...You always show me such warmth... Unconditionally... Your kindness is a gift... that I never want to be without.

Link: You never will be without it. Anywhere you wanna go... Valm, Ferox, Hyrule, or even some random outrealm that we've never heard of... My purpose now is to see you happy. As long as you wish it, I'll be there with you.

Emmeryn: ...Thank you, Link... Thank you for everything.

A/N:

Because of Emmeryn's damaged speaking ability, I was excited to write this chapter and try a different dynamic between characters than I'm used to. (And between the two of them, I already knew that I was gonna go crazy with the ellipses before writing it. Highlighting those pauses in speech is especially important for how I want to portray these characters, I feel.) Don't know if it turned out all that interesting in the end, but I had fun at least!

Just like in Emmeryn's supports with Robin, I tried to convey that her speech is improving a little as time goes on. Hopefully, I was able to get that point across.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to write a chapter for Yen'fay or not. He's very similar to Lon'qu, and I don't know if I've got any worthwhile ideas, but I imagine my perfectionist side will win out in the end, and I'll try to write something. Either he or Aversa will be next.
