"The detective who showed up was not a cop. The number on the badge he was wearing isn't in use. Neither is the badge number he told the kids."

"What about the card he gave them?" Supergirl asked.

"The number is a burn phone. We tried calling but straight to voicemail. He probably figured he got made and disconnected it. But right now we don't know who he is or what he wanted." Vasquez said. "However, he isn't our biggest problem."

"What is?" J'onn asked.

"The police are now investigating the crash and they have lots of questions."

"Can't we just tell them the truth?" Supergirl asked.

"No one will believe what I saw, however, in one of Alex's memories I saw a camera, we are pulling footage now." J'onn said. "If it shows what I think it does, it should be enough to get any potential charges dropped."

"And if it isn't?" Supergirl asked frowning.

"We'll figure something out." He said as Vasquez's tablet pinged.

"Here we go." Vasquez said looking down before beaming the footage to the main screen.

"That's Alex." J'onn said watching the screen where her car pulled to a stop.

"Where is this?" Supergirl asked.

"Back streets a few blocks from Wildcat's gym." Vasquez said.

"What was she doing there?" Kara asked.

"Don't know, I didn't go that far back." J'onn said as they saw Alex step out of the car.

"Where was her DEO guard?" Kara asked Vasquez.

"She gave them the slip. We don't know why, but she does it a lot." Vasquez said as Alex approached a door. Before she got there a man appeared from the shadows and stabbed her neck with a syringe. Moments later Alex went limp and was caught by the man who carried her to van.

"Wait, isn't that Stagg's goon?" Kara asked.

"Ivan Utkin." Vasquez corrected before agreeing. "Looks like it."

"So this was revenge for Stagg?"

"I don't think so." J'onn said. "What he said to Alex made it sound like he was working for someone now." He added as the video kept rolling. After several minutes the van door opened again and Utkin jumped out with a barely conscious Alex and dragged her to her car. He then strapped her into the drivers seat before saying something to her. He then tossed the empty whiskey bottle onto the passenger seat and backed away as another man emerged from the van and took his place at Alex's side."

"Wait isn't that Malaise?" Kara asked recognising the man from their listed of wanted Metas.

"Yes." Vasquez said as they watched the man take Alex's arm before backing away. Moments later Utkin returned to Alex and turned the ignition key for Alex and shutting the door. Moments later Alex drove off.

"What just happened?" Kara asked.

"Don't know." J'onn said. "But we need to talk to Alex again."

"I'll start talking to NCPD." Vasquez said.

"What's wrong?" Alex asked as J'onn and Kara landed outside the house in Midvale.

"We found a video. But it has raised some questions." J'onn said. "I need to read your mind again."

"Okay." Alex agreed as Eliza asked.

"What's going on?"

"We found CCTV footage of Alex, just before the crash. It confirms what J'onn saw, that she was forced to drink and then the person put the car into drive and well you know the rest."

"Then why the need to read her mind again?"

"Someone else was there. We need to know what they did." Kara said as J'onn read Alex's mind.

"What do you mean?" Eliza asked as Kara guided her mother and niece out of the room so J'onn could concentrate.

"There is a meta called Malaise. He is a kind of telepath. He's capable of getting inside peoples head and reading their darkest or saddest thoughts and then he makes them relive them. He can unlock dark thoughts, nightmares and weaknesses."

"Why?" The teenage Kara asked.

"I don't know. Maybe to break them, so they comply."

"He hid his tracks well, which is why I didn't see it last time, but Malaise was definitely in your head." J'onn said as he finally released Alex's head.

"What did you see?" The teenage Kara asked.

"Right now that doesn't matter." J'onn cut in. "We need to figure out what they were after."

"Something is wrong." Alex said. "Apart from the obvious. Utkin is a pro, why make such a rookie mistake of being caught on camera?"

"None of this makes sense." J'onn said. "Including what you were doing there in the first place."

"Or why you ditched your DEO escort." Kara added.

"Do you remember anything else?" J'onn pressed.

"I spent the last few hours trying to put the day together. It's all really patchy." Alex said.

"Maybe we should get you to a doctor." J'onn said. "It could be concussion."

"I'm okay." Alex said.

"Alex, you are missing memories." Kara said while frowning.

"The police want to talk to you anyway. Let's get you looked at in National City then you can talk to the police." J'onn said. "The sooner we clear this up the better."

"Are you being arrested?" The teenage Kara asked.

"No. Not yet anyway." Alex said, not inspiring confidence.

"We've got this." The older Kara said to her niece.

As Alex talked to the police, J'onn and Supergirl sat in the DEO trying to understand what had happened.

"He said something about profitable business and Alex was getting in the way." J'onn said. "What is she investigating?"

"I don't know. I didn't think she was." Supergirl said. "But then again she has spent a lot of time working late. She said it was for paperwork, but maybe it wasn't."

"So you have no idea what she was doing last night?"

"Other than what we saw in the video, no." Supergirl said.

"I may be able to help with that." Wildcat said entering the room. "This may be my fault."

"How?" J'onn asked before Kara could.

"A few weeks back I noticed some guys hanging round the gym. I recognised some of them from a few months ago. They had been giving Diz some hassle for turning his back on the Los Zetas."

"Hadn't they been replaced by Kai by then?" Supergirl asked.

"Yes. These guys didn't make the cut and wanted to start their own rival gang and were trying to drag Diz into it. He said no. He got more hassle and a beat down but then they left."

"And now they are back?"

"Yes. They aren't talking to Diz, but I noticed them making shady deals. I mentioned it to Alex when they came back and she started to investigate."

"Why didn't she say anything to me?" Supergirl asked.

"You had just left for Argo." Wildcat said as Kara saw Diz walk past the door.

"Diz? Where are MJ and Alex?" She asked.

"At the house with Ruby. They sent me out to get food, so I thought I'd see if there had been any updates." He explained.

"How did you get in here?" Supergirl asked.

"Ruby asked me to drop something off." He said before seeing the picture of Malaise. "I know him." Diz said pointing, saving himself from further questions.

"You do?"

"Well recognise him. He was talking to Kar's mom a few weeks ago."

"You sure?" Supergirl asked.

"Yeah. It was near the gym. He touched her arm, which was strange. But then he walked off so I assumed they knew each other."

"So this has been going on for weeks?" Supergirl asked.

"What has?" Diz asked.

"It might explain the late nights and Alex's change in behaviour." J'onn said, ignoring Diz, before frowning.

"What?" Supergirl asked.

"What if Malaise didn't only target Alex?" J'onn asked. "What if Kara's nightmares were due to Malaise?"

"He attacked Kar?" Diz asked.

"We don't know." J'onn said. "We won't know anything until Alex is finished with the police. For now go home."

"But-"

"Diz, right now the most useful thing you can do is watch over MJ so Kara has one less thing to worry about." Supergirl said.

"Okay." He reluctantly agreed before walking off. Once he was gone Supergirl asked J'onn.

"You really think he could have attacked Kara?"

"Anything is possible. Especially as Alex has no memory of what happened to her." He pointed out moments before Alex walked into the room.

"How did it go?" Supergirl asked.

"Okay. I think. Did you know Lena was providing a lawyer?"

"She did? Why? You have nothing to hide." Kara said.

"That's what I said. But he pointed out the ADA was involved with Stagg and the police had been hassling an innocent teen so it was best to have protection." Alex said. "But they let me go so I guess that is a good sign. What have you guys been doing?"

"Finding out about your secret investigations." Supergirl said, clearly displeased. "Which we will come back to. But first J'onn needs to go into your head again."

"It will involve going further back and deeper." J'onn warned.

"Do what you need to do." Alex said.

"They let you go." The teenage Kara said when the trio landed in Midvale.

"Yes." Alex said hugging her, while trying to not move her ribs.

"Yet you look really stressed." The teen said.

"We need to talk to you." Her aunt said.

"Because you think I was attacked? Diz told me." The teen said pulling away from her mother.

"We found out Malaise has been messing with your mom's mind for awhile." The older Kara confirmed.

"How long is awhile?" Eliza asked.

"The first time was when I was on Argo."

"That long? That's why she's seemed different?" The teenage Kara asked.

"Maybe." The older Kara said as J'onn explained.

"There's a chance the Meta who did this got to you as well. That might be what triggered your nightmares."

"And you want to read my mind and check?" The teen guessed.

"But I am not sure it is a good idea." Alex said not liking the idea.

"Why?" The teenager asked.

"It's dangerous."

"Alex, I know why you are worried, but if he did get to Kara, I can help undo what he did." J'onn said.

"You can?" The teenage Kara asked.

"Yes." J'onn said.

"Can you stop the nightmares?" The teen asked.

"You're still having them?" Alex asked looking over at her daughter as another wave of guilt washed over her for not noticing.

"Can you?" The teen asked J'onn ignoring her mother's question.

"I should be able to reduce them." J'onn said. "But human minds, especially teenage minds are unpredictable."

Nodding the teen looked at her mother who said. "It's your choice."

"What do I have to do?" The teen asked J'onn.

"Hold still." He said walking over to her. "First step is to find out if he made contact with you. This may feel a little weird."

"Wait, are you going to see everything in my head?" The teen asked getting second thoughts.

"I hope not." J'onn said. "I will go back to the day you first had the nightmare."

When she nodded he placed his hands on her head and shut his eyes as everyone else looked on.

"Are you okay?" J'onn asked as he released the teen's head a short time later.

"I think so." She said sounding uncertain as Alex immediately wrapped her good arm round her.

"He got to you." He said.

"When?" The teen asked.

"Outside Lena's apartment. Someone walked into you."

"Diz was with me." She said.

"He only needed a second or two." J'onn said.

"What now?" Eliza asked.

"I'll try to undo what he did. It should be easier with Kara than Alex as it only happened once."
