Davis arrived in Pennsila City for his first gym battle. That's where he met Cletus, who happened to be the gym leader, and his gym happens to be his family's restaurant. In a unique gym battle, Davis and Cletus are tied with one win each, and the last battle determines who will be the winner. However, Davis and Poochyena find themselves in a tough bind. How are they going to get out of this one?

(Davis' voice) Opened Potential

Poochyena is in some serious trouble. Poochyena is trapped by Sandile's Sand Tomb and can't seem to get out. If Davis doesn't think of something, he's going to lose his first gym battle.

"Sorry, Davis. I'm afraid this battle is over. Sandile, Dig and finish this! Use Bite when you come up!" Cletus ordered.

"Sandile!" Sandile started digging and was making its way towards Poochyena.

"Brace yourself, Poochyena!" Davis said. Poochyena readied itself and that was when Sandile came straight up from under Poochyena and gave Poochyena a strong bite. Sandile gave Poochyena a good throw and Poochyena bounced against the ground. It didn't look good and everyone thought this battle was over. "Come on, Poochyena! Hang in there!" Davis certainly didn't believe it was over and he was right. Poochyena was getting back up.

"Oh my... I didn't think Poochyena could get back up after that." Cletus said.

"I've faced tougher battles, and through every single one of them, I believed in my pokemon. This is no different." Davis said.

"I find that quite admirable, but I'm afraid this battle is going to end. Sandile, Dig!" Cletus said with Sandile digging again.

"That again. There has to be a way to... Wait! I got it!" Davis said as he got an idea. "Poochyena, use Howl right in that hole!" Him giving that order was a surprise to Tetsu and Cletus. Poochyena ran straight to the hole and howled right inside. The sound echoed inside and it was too much for Sandile. Sandile came straight out to try and was hurting from that sound, wanting to getaway from it.

"No way! Howl is a support move! Instead, he used it to drag out Sandile!" Cletus said as he was astonished. "I've never seen anyone use it like that before."

"And we're not done. Now use Tackle!" Davis said. Poochyena charged right at Sandile and tackled against Sandile, finally dealing some damage. "Now use Bite and give it a good throw!" Poochyena bit Sandile's tail and threw it around with Sandile hitting a rock.

"Sandile, can you keep going?" Cletus asked. Sandile was getting back up, but it was time for this to end.

"Poochyena, I got another idea! Dive in one of the holes!" Davis said. Poochyena trusted Davis and dived inside one of the holes.

"What are they up to now?" Cletus questioned. Sandile moved towards one of the holes and tried to see what's going on. "Wait! Sandile, get back!"

"Now use Bite!" Davis said. Poochyena jumped right out in front of Sandile and bit down on Sandile again. "Let's finish it with Tackle!" Poochyena tackled Sandile again and smashed Sandile right into the rock. Sandile was knocked out after that battle with Poochyena happy it won. Everyone was shocked at what they saw.

"Sandile is unable to battle, Poochyena is the winner! With two wins, the winner is Davis the challenger!" Clyde declared.

"Yes! We won!" Davis cheered with Poochyena jumping straight in his arms. "You were awesome, Poochyena!" He acknowledge with Poochyena licking his face. As for Cletus' cheerleaders, all of them were bummed that he lost. Some even cried.

"I can't believe Cletus lost!"

"He's too dreamy to lose!"

"Sheesh. They make him sound like he's something special." Tetsu said as he was getting a bit annoyed. Now that the battle was over, Davis and his pokemon were being rewarded his badge.

"That was an impressive battle, Davis. You really surprised me in the end there." Cletus said.

"That's because I knew my pokemon could handle it." Davis said.

"Well, here is proof that you won here. This is the Tri Badge." Cletus said as he gave Davis a triangular badge that was red, blue, and yellow.

"Thanks a lot, Cletus." Davis said as he accepted the badge. "Yeah! I got my first badge: the Tri Badge!"

"Yeah/Pooch/Venonat!"

"Thanks again, Cletus. It feels great to get one of these again, and this is my first one from Centros." Davis said. "What do you think, Tetsu? Do I rule or what?"

"I'm going with "or what" since that was touch and go." Tetsu said as he wasn't all that impressed. "You didn't really think this through. You didn't put much thought into your strategies. Even though you won, I say you were just lucky."

"You could just say something nice." Davis said as he didn't like what Tetsu was implying.

"All I'm saying is that maybe next time you should forget luck and put more thought into strategy." Tetsu said.

"It wasn't luck! Do I have to battle you again to show you how strong I am?!" Davis said.

"No thanks. I'm out of here." Tetsu said as he was ready to leave.

"Hold on. I thought you two were traveling together." Cletus claimed.

"Not anymore. Later." Tetsu said as he just walked out of there with Davis getting annoyed with him. Tetsu might not have been impressed with what Davis did, but Cletus was.

The Pokemon Center

"Ready. Hello?" Davis said. After his battle, he decided to get his pokemon some rest at the Pokemon Center.

"Be right there." Nurse Joy said as she came out. This Nurse Joy looked differently than the Nurse Joys Davis remembered. She had bangs that curled inward and instead of two loops, she only had hair make one in the back. She wore a doctor's white coat and wore a pink dress underneath with her wearing nurse shoes. "Welcome. Are your pokemon all set to go?"

"They sure are." Davis said.

"Great. Clefable, please help me." Nurse Joy asked as she asked for her assistant.

"Clefable." A Clefable with nurse hat came in and took Davis pokeballs.

"A Clefable?" Davis questioned.

"As you know, Nurse Joy have assistants. Here in Centros, Clefable are the pokemon that help Nurse Joy." Davis turned around and saw Cletus there. "Hi, Davis."

"Hey, Cletus. What's up?" Davis said.

"You said my gym was your first gym battle in Centros, and I noticed something. I figured you would like to have this." Cletus said as he handed him a small blue rectangular case. "It's a badge case."

"Really? Thanks." Davis said as he took the case. He opened it up and placed his first badge inside.

"I was also hoping that we could talk." Cletus said.

"Sure." Davis said. The two of them had a seat and got to talking. "What did you want to talk about?"

"Our battle. I never saw a trainer who thought outside of the box like you did." Cletus said. "It was all original, not to mention you had full belief in your pokemon. I don't know what it is, but there's something special about you."

"Oh... You think so." Davis said as he was feeling special. "I don't know what you want me to tell you. I just trusted my instincts and sometimes the idea came to me. In fact, the truth is that I got it from a great friend of mine that I traveled with in the past."

"Really? What friend?" Cletus said.

"His name was..." Davis didn't get to finish as he heard sirens going off. They both looked out a window and could see the police were on the move. "What's that about?"

"No idea." Cletus said.

"Attention! This is the Pennsila City Police Force! We ask that all of you remain indoors. There's a rampaging Onix downtown." An announcement claimed.

"A rampaging Onix?! That's not good!" Cletus said.

"Let's check it out." Davis said as he hurried to get his pokemon back.

"What?! Are you serious?!" Cletus said as he couldn't believe Davis would even suggest doing the opposite of what the police are saying.

...

Downtown

It was just as the announcement said. There was an Onix and it was acting out of control. It kept smashing against everything and it wasn't safe. Officer Jenny and her men tried to handle the situation, but it wasn't looking good. Fun fact, the Officer Jennies here were dressed different. This one wore a standard police uniform with her hair tied into a tail with a skirt and black leggings.

"This isn't good. It won't settle down." Officer Jenny said. It looks like she might have to use force against this Onix if it won't settle down. As for Davis and Cletus, once they got Davis' pokemon, they hurried to the area and saw what was going on.

"There it is, but why is that Onix acting that way!" Davis said.

"I don't know!" Cletus said as it looked like it was getting dangerous.

"This is bad. We better do something before someone or Onix gets hurt."

"Cletus! Davis!" They all turned around and saw Tetsu was on his way.

"Tetsu? What are you doing here?" Davis questioned.

"I heard what was going on. I came to see if I could do something." Tetsu said. "Onix is a rock-type and water-types are my own little preference. I can try to get that Onix under control."

"Hold on. We can't just attack it. We don't even know why Onix is doing this." Davis said.

"What are you talking about? Davis, this isn't the time to be messing around." Tetsu said.

"I'm not messing around. I just don't think this is what it looks like." Davis said. He could just tell that something wasn't quite right with this picture, and he might be right. He took a closer look and saw there was something reflecting light off of Onix. Davis thinks that might be the problem.

"Imperialdramon, do you think you can try to get Onix to hold still?" Davis asked.

"I'll try." Imperialdramon said and flew into action. He flew straight at Onix's head and grabbed a hold of it by the horn and the head. "Come on, big guy! Just take it easy!" Imperialdramon pushed down and pinned Onix's head. That's when Davis made his move and hurried over.

"Stop! It's too dangerous!" Officer Jenny called.

"I've got this! I saw something!" Davis said as he moved closer, but Onix still moved around. "Easy, Onix. I only want to help you." He assured as he looked around for what he saw. "There it is! Let me see if I can get it out." Everyone watched closely. Davis reached inside two of Onix's rocks and tried to pull something out. Then, it came right out. "Got it!" He showed that a big nail was inside of Onix. When that happened, Onix began to calm down. "No wonder you were cranky. You had this stuck in there."

"Amazing!" Cletus said.

"I can't believe he figure it out!" Tetsu said as they were all amazed at what Davis just did.

"See, Officer Jenny?" Davis said as he showed the nail. "Onix didn't mean any trouble. He only wanted help."

"I see." Officer Jenny said as she took the nail. "Well, I'll have Nurse Joy take a look at Onix, but thank you for help. That was dangerous, but brave of you." Everyone was impressed with what Davis did, and Onix was very grateful. Davis truly is an amazing trainer and seeing what has happened today has made Cletus decide on something.

The Gym

"You're leaving?!" Cletus' father said as he was quite shocked. Cletus grabbed a hold of a brown leather backpack and just told his family and the employees that he was leaving on his own journey.

"That's right." Cletus said as he stood with Davis. "Truth be told, I've been thinking about it for a while. Meeting Davis and Imperialdramon has convinced me. Davis is an amazing trainer, and I think I can learn a lot from watching him. I'm also only going to take Sandile with me on this journey. You'll need the others for the gym."

"But, bro..." Clyde said as he was a little sad to see his brother go.

"Don't get me wrong. I love our family restaurant, and I didn't mind being gym leader." Cletus said. "The truth is that I want to learn more about pokemon, become a better trainer, and maybe I'll open my own business one day that works for people and pokemon. Davis has a lot of potential that he has opened and living up to it. I want to do the same for myself." All of them were upset to see him go, but were supportive.

"In that case, go on ahead." Cletus' father said. "I'll tell your mother about what happened here. She'll be upset she didn't get to see you off, but you shouldn't wait on a journey. Go and live up to the potential you believe you have."

"Thanks, Dad. Thank you all." Cletus said as he was glad he could leave home with his head held high. With that, Cletus hit the road with Davis and Imperialdramon as he was ready to start his own journey.

"So, where are you heading, Cletus?" Davis asked.

"With you, if you don't mind. I have a feeling it will be exciting if we travel together." Cletus said.

"Yeah! Sounds like it could be fun!" Imperialdramon said.

"The more the merrier." Davis said as he liked having Cletus come along.

"By the way, what happened to Tetsu?" Cletus asked.

"I'm right here." They all looked next to them and were surprised to see Tetsu right there. "I was on my way when I ran into you. Where are you guys heading now?"

"My next gym, of course." Davis said.

"Let's see where it is." Cletus said as he took out a small rod and a holographic map came out, with Davis and Imperialdramon amazed by it. "It looks like the closest gym is in Floriba City. It's not that far from here." Hearing they were heading there was a shock to Tetsu. "Tetsu, why don't you come along? There's really no reason you shouldn't join us."

"Why not. You came this far with us." Davis offered as he was officially asking Tetsu to come.

"I suppose I should. You could drag Cletus into some trouble. Someone needs to watch his back because he doesn't know what he's getting into." Tetsu accepted.

"Hey! You haven't known me that much longer than him!" Davis said as he felt offended.

"Easy now." Imperialdramon said.

"Come on. If we're all traveling together, we should all get along. Let's head to Floriba city. It's less than a day to get there." Cletus said.

"Yeah! Let's go!" Davis said as he let it go and was heading to his next gym, but Tetsu seemed rather nervous.

Now that Davis has his first badge, he also has new traveling friends: Tetsu and Cletus. Now, it's off to Floriba City for his next gym. What can we expect for our three travelers? We'll soon see...as the journey continues.
