"Morning." Kara said as her daughter entered the kitchen.
"Hi. Was everything okay last night?"
"It was fine." Kara smiled. "And thanks for dinner."
"That was Steve."
"That would explain the lack of vegetables." Kara said as Alex wolfed down breakfast. "Did you not eat?" Kara asked surprised by the speed her daughter was eating at.
"Huh?" Alex asked looking up.
"You are eating pretty fast."
"I'm late."
"No you're not." Kara said glancing at a clock.
"My study group is meeting before school."
"Okay, but don't push yourself too hard." Kara said.
"I won't." The teen said finishing her breakfast and picking up Chewie's lead.
"Want me to walk him?" Kara asked.
"You have time?"
"Of course." Kara said.
Once Alex had gone Kara put the leash on Chewie and walked him over to her sister's house.
"Morning." Kara called entering the kitchen.
"Hey. How are you feeling?" The older Alex asked.
"Fine. I'm just about to walk Chewie, want to join me?"
"Sure. Not like there is anyone to talk to here anyway."
"Where is MJ?"
"Still asleep." Alex sighed. "I was just about to shout at him. Let me do that then we'll go." Alex said.
00
"What are you thinking about?" Alex asked her sister as they walked through the park.
"Spiders."
"Why?"
"I was wondering where they are."
"Well our resident expert thinks they are likely to be unstable and self limiting."
"When do we ever get that lucky?" Kara asked.
"True, but why are you thinking about them now?"
"There was one on your ceiling. Well not a mutant one, just a normal one. But it got me thinking. Or maybe it was the slugs last night or maybe it was Stagg's statement."
"You found something?"
"No. But there was a mention of spiders."
"You need a distraction." Alex said.
"So sister's night?" Kara asked hopefully.
"Sure." Alex said. "But what about the kids?"
"Isn't MJ grounded?"
"Yes."
"So Alex can go to yours and game with him. Maybe she'll actually have fun."
"See I was thinking MJ might actually study if Alex is there." Alex argued before saying. "Come on, we need get to the DEO to run some scans."
"Why?"
"You inhaled that gas last night, well this morning."
"You said it was nothing to be worried about." Kara reminded her.
"I know and I want to make sure of that."
-00-
"You have enough food there?" The older Alex asked when Kara entered the apartment that evening carrying several bags.
"You want more?" Kara asked as she put the bags down. "Because pizza will be here soon."
"No. You do remember the kids are at mine? It is just us here." Alex said as the doorbell rang. Once Kara had collected the pizza she turned back to her sister and said.
"I know, but I feel like comfort eating."
"You still thinking about spiders?"
"And everything else. It just feels like there is a storm moving in."
"Well tonight no talk about spiders, metas, Stagg, Tycho or anything else bad." Alex said.
"Sounds good." Kara said opening the pizza box. She was just about to pick up a slice when the front door opened and Kara saw her daughter storm into the apartment and disappear into her room saying as she did so. "Don't want to talk." Moments before the door slammed shut.
"Any idea?" Her sister asked.
"No. I thought she and MJ were gaming." Kara said.
"I'll talk to MJ." The older Alex said standing. "I'll keep you posted."
"Thanks." Kara said walking her sister to the door before heading to her daughter's room.
"Alex, I'm coming in." Kara said trying to open the door, only to find she couldn't. "Alex, open the door." Kara said. Not getting a response she used her super strength to open it only to have the door get squashed between her strength and the force field her daughter was projecting, before finally the door shattered.
Knowing her daughter couldn't keep the forcefield up for long Kara retreated to the lounge and waited. After what felt like an eternity she heard Chewie scamper out of her daughter's room. Sensing her chance Kara used her Super speed to get into her daughter's room, only to find her daughter passed out on the bed. Lying next to her, she wrapped her daughter in a blanket and waited for her to wake up.
-00-
"MJ." Alex said knocking on his door.
"I'm asleep."
"Very convincing." Alex said. "I'm coming in." She said before entering his room and seeing him lying on his bed. "What's going on?" She asked.
"Nothing."
"Then why is your cousin very upset?"
"So you are taking her side? Should have known."
"Since when are you and Alex on different sides?" Alex asked. When MJ didn't say anything she asked. "What happened?"
"It doesn't matter."
"The fact you and Alex are both upset suggests different." The adult Alex pointed out.
"She refused to help and then I said some stuff I shouldn't."
"Help with what?" His mother asked.
"It doesn't matter." He said.
"Well what type of stuff did you say?"
"Things I didn't mean, kind of. But I shouldn't have said it."
"So what are you going to do?" His mother asked.
"Why do I have to do anything?" MJ asked.
"Because you aren't happy." Alex said. "You haven't actually told me what happened. Not really anyway. Only you two know what happened. But if you think you have something to apologise for it is easier to do that sooner rather than later."
-00-
"Mom?" Alex asked confused as she woke up and saw her mother looking down at her.
"Hey, how are you feeling?"
"Okay. What happened?"
"You came home, put a forcefield up and then passed out." Kara summarised. "So what happened?"
"MJ and I had a fight."
"I guessed that part." Kara said.
"It was bad."
"Your Aunt and I used to fight all the time." Kara said.
"Not like this."
"What was the fight about?"
"Does it matter?"
"Well you are pretty upset, so I would say so." Kara pointed out. "And your door looks like it paid a heavy price."
"That was you, not me." The teen said looking over at the doorway.
"You were at least half to blame." Kara said.
"Story of my night." The teen said.
"So what was the fight about?" Kara pressed.
"I can't tell you. If I do it is betraying MJ and he'll be worse than he is already."
"What does that mean?" Kara asked confused.
"Doesn't matter."
"Well who was to blame?" Kara asked.
"MJ is convinced I was."
"But you disagree?" Kara guessed.
"I know why MJ is mad, but it is about more than him and if his head wasn't so far up hi-" She started before trailing off.
"This would be easier if you told me what happened." Kara tried again.
"I can't."
"Well, you can let this fester or you can decide that your cousin is more important than what the fight was about."
"And if he disagrees?"
"Seeing how many times your phone has buzzed in the last hour I don't think he will. But you need to decide what you want. I'll go make some hot chocolate." Kara said kissing her daughter's head and leaving.
-00-
"Any idea what last night was about?" Alex asked her sister as Kara walked into her kitchen.
"Only that she and MJ had a fight. But she didn't say anything more. What about you?"
"Pretty much the same. But it sounds like MJ launched a personal attack."
"Wonder what triggered it." Kara said.
"MJ said he asked for help and Alex refused, then he let rip."
"Help with what? And why wouldn't Alex help?" Kara asked.
"No idea. But they did go to school together." Alex said. "Maybe it was just a flash and things will go back to normal."
"I just wish they'd say what caused it."
"Maybe MJ is feeling the stress of everything." Alex said. "I mean Kara going to college, and his woeful SATS."
"I sense a but." Kara said.
"Something feels off, MJ just seems angry the whole time."
"I don't know why Alex won't tell me." Kara said frustrated.
"Well things have been pretty quiet recently, maybe she thinks you aren't worrying enough."
"See I know you are joking, but I can actually see her doing that." Kara sighed.
"But Kara called and she is definitely going to be home this weekend. Maybe she can help MJ."
"Does she want a ride?"
"No she's car sharing with someone." Alex said as her phone rang.
"Danvers." She said. "Where? She'll be right there."
"What's wrong?" Kara asked as Alex ended the call.
"Alien attack at the old harbour."
"On it." Kara said disappearing.
-00-
As Kara landed at the old Harbour she saw the rampaging alien and immediately recognised the species.
"Backup will be there in five minutes." Vasquez said.
"I should be fine." Kara said before talking towards the alien. As she reached it she said. "You need to stop."
In response the alien turned towards Supergirl and snarled before punching her. As soon as the punch made contact Supergirl was sent flying backwards.
"What?" She asked getting to her feet. Before she could think about anything else she found the ground she was standing on melting. Looking down and the melting concrete she almost missed the lamp post that was hurtling towards her. Seeing it at the last moment she deflected it and took off before the ground got any hotter.
"We have a problem here." Supergirl said over the radio.
"Back up is two minutes out." Vasquez said. "Can you keep it busy until then?"
"I hope so." Supergirl said before launching a counter attack. Only the alien moved faster then Kara was expecting and dodged everything before launching it's own attack, landing a kick on Supergirl who crashed through and old boat house.
Pushing off the beams that had fallen on top of her she shook off the effects and stumbled outside just in time to see Ruby getting punched in the jaw and hurtling towards her. Moving fast Supergirl caught Ruby before putting her down and joining in the fight with the other DEO agents.
Picking up the lamp post the alien had used against her, Supergirl used the distraction the DEO agents provided and got close enough to the alien wrap the post round it before one of the DEO Agents fired a weapon at it, causing it to spasm and then collapse.
00
"Everyone okay?" Alex asked when the group go to the DEO.
"Yeah, but that was some super charged alien." Ji commented.
"Except he's a Grot, they don't have powers." Supergirl said.
"That one definitely did." Ruby said holding an ice pack to her jaw.
"But it shouldn't." Kara argued.
"We need to figure out what why he was acting like that." Alex said.
"You think the drugs have made it to aliens?" Vasquez asked.
"I don't know. I don't even know how it would work." Alex said. "But if someone is able to give aliens power we have a new headache."
"Two actually." Kara said.
"Why two?"
"Firstly more rampaging threats, secondly a PR issue which will lead to more tension and probably more humans wanting powers."
"Well you were complaining it was too quiet." Alex said.
"Pretty sure I wasn't. So what do you want to do?" Kara asked.
"Well if aliens are taking drugs they aren't going to talk to the DEO." Alex said.
"So a job for me then." Kara said.
"Yes, but be careful." Alex warned.
"I will."
