After a couple hours of feeling restless Kara got off the lamp bed and carefully walked down the corridor. Turning a corner she saw Alex's grandmother who immediately looked over to her and asked.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better, thank you." Kara smiled.
"Where's Alex?"
"She's getting some rest."
"Do you also need more rest?"
"No, I'm fully healed now."
"I am pleased. Alex was very concerned. We thought she was going to hijack a ship."
"I'm sure that idea occurred to her." Kara smiled. "Fortunately she didn't. Thank you for looking after her."
"She is my grandchild." The woman said before conceding. "Alex may have felt she was a prisoner."
"One day she will understand." Kara said.
"I hope so." The woman said before asking. "On Earth you took us to a local eatery, maybe I can return the favour. And while we are there you can share stories of my son."
"I'd like that." Kara said.
"Good. Then this way." The grandmother said leading Kara down a hall. As they walked the older woman asked. "What was my son like, when you knew him?"
"He was kind and gentle. He always put others first. If I'm honest though in some ways I never really knew him. I mean he kept so much of himself hidden. But then again so did I."
"It sounds like you both did what you needed to." The mother said.
"Maybe." Kara replied.
00
"How are you ribs?" Alex asked, when her son shifted uncomfortably in his chair.
"They're fine." He said. "I'm sorry I ran off, but I didn't want Alex to be alone."
"I get that." Alex said. "But what if Alex hadn't been on Dakran? Or what if Lobo had been here?"
"Then Alex would have needed some help." MJ argued. "I know you are angry at me, but if it happened again I'd do the same thing."
"I know and part of me really is proud of you." Alex said. "But you ran off to another planet."
"I did leave a note." MJ pointed out.
"I admit that is progress." Alex said.
"I'm sorry."
"I know, but you were looking out for your cousin."
"That's not what I'm talking about." MJ said. "I'm sorry for everything I did over the last few months."
"MJ, you were a victim." Alex reminded him.
"I was still responsible and I still hurt you."
"You were hurt too." Alex reminded him. "And because of everything that has happened, we've not had time to talk about that. For that I'm sorry."
"There's not much to talk about. Apart from what a jerk I am." He said as the door suddenly opened.
"Alex." The teenage Alex called rushing into the room.
"What is it?"
"Mom's gone."
00
As Kara walked towards her daughter's room she saw her daughter run towards her.
"Mom!" Alex said before hugging her.
"Hey, you okay?" Kara asked.
"I was worried when you weren't in the lamp room."
"I'm sorry, I went to get some food with your grandmother." Kara explained. "I thought you were sleeping."
"I was, but then I woke up and you were gone and Alex didn't know where you were."
"It was a last minute decision." Kara said pulling away. "Next time I'll leave a note."
"I thought you'd-"
"Alex, I'm okay." Kara said hugging her. "I'm sorry I scared you."
"Are you really okay?" The teen asked.
"I'm fine." Kara promised her. "The lamps healed me and food always helps." She added smiling. "How are you feeling?"
"Okay, I guess." The teen replied, more interested in her mother's state than her own. "How did the meal go?"
"Good I think. She talked a lot about you." Kara said.
"Me? Why?"
"Well you are her granddaughter." Kara pointed out.
"Then she shouldn't have had me kidnapped." The teen said still annoyed.
"That was for your protection." Kara reminded her.
"What happened to you?"
"What matters is we are all safe." Kara said. "Now we are here, how about staying a few days so you can learn more about your father and his family?"
"You'd stay too?"
"I'm not leaving you." Kara promised her.
"You sure it is okay to stay?"
"For a few days yes. If that is what you want." Kara said as her sister entered the room.
"Where the hell have you been?" The older Alex demanded.
"Sorry, I was talking with Alex's grandmother." Kara apologised.
"Are you okay?" Her sister asked carefully looking at the Kryptonian.
"I'm fine all healed." Kara smiled before asking. "Where's MJ?"
"He's still avoiding you." Her daughter explained.
"So you ready to go home?" Her sister asked.
"Actually we were thinking of staying a few days." Kara said.
"Because you aren't recovered or you want to see Dakran?" The older Alex asked frowning.
"To see Dakran." Kara said.
"You want to do that without us?" Her sister asked.
"No. I mean I assumed you wanted to get back, but if you want to stay that's great."
"I'd prefer MJ not to travel for a few days, his ribs are still really bad. I want to find out why."
"He got into a fight." The teenage Alex said.
"What?" Alex asked.
"He was trying to protect me."
"From what?" Kara asked eyes wide.
"A local jerk. It's fine. Frax dealt with it, so did MJ."
00
"I thought you would have left by now." Alex's grandmother said to Kara.
"Alex wanted to stay for a few days." Kara explained.
"Then thank you for letting her stay."
"Dakran and Fels, I mean Salkor, are important parts of Alex. I want her to learn as much as she can of her history." Kara said before warning. "But it has to go at her own pace."
"I understand."
"But if there is anything important you would like her to see she is more open than a few days ago."
"Thank you."
"Can I ask something?" Kara questioned.
"Of course."
"Have I offended Fels'- I mean, Salkor's father in some way? I mean I haven't seen him since I arrived."
"He is scared of becoming attached to Alex." The older woman said. "He remembers how much Salkor's departure hurt. He does not want to go through that again. He will come round."
00
"Where's Alex?" The older Alex asked when she saw her sister standing alone on a balcony.
"Off with Frax and the rest of the family, well less the psycho brother who tried to kill her."
"Where is he?" Alex asked.
"I don't know exactly. I think that is for his safety. But Alex's grandmother promised he wouldn't be an issue."
"That's good." Alex said. "Yet you look miserable. What's wrong?"
"Nothing." Kara said. "I mean what would be wrong? Alex is getting to find out about her past. That's good. And she is connecting with Fels's family and she gets to use her powers to do that and-"
"You feel left out." Her sister guessed.
"What? No. Of course not. Well maybe."
"She's not replacing you." Alex said.
"I know."
"And she isn't cutting you out."
"I know. And I hate feeling like this. But I can't help it."
"You are going to be a mess when she starts dating." Alex mused.
"That's not helping." Kara said.
"Sorry." Her sister apologised. "But my point is, Alex is just exploring other sides of herself and the great thing is she doesn't have to do that alone. And what I know of Alex is once she has figured it out she'll share it with you."
"What if she likes this side more?"
"She won't. She's never going to replace you. It just needs time to settle down."
"I know that, but you know that at times I'm not exactly patient."
"That'd be an understatement." Alex agreed. "And that is why, while Alex is doing her thing you need a distraction. So let's go figure out who Fels was the Danvers way."
"What does that even mean?"
"Don't know yet, we'll figure it out." Alex shrugged.
"What about MJ?"
"He's resting his ribs."
00
"You're back." Kara said surprised when her daughter entered the room.
"I said I would be." The teen said. "Are you okay?"
"I told you I am all healed."
"That's not what I meant." The teen said.
"Why else wouldn't I be okay?" Kara asked.
"Because you are freaking out over me spending time with everyone here." The teenager said.
"What? No." Kara said.
"Yeah you are." The teen said hugging her.
"Okay, just a little." Kara said into the hug.
"I'm not replacing you." The teen said.
"I know." Kara said releasing her before they sat down on a couch and Kara asked.
"So how is it going?"
"Okay." The teen said.
"Very convincing. What's wrong?"
"I thought being here I'd start to know who my father was. Everyone here is sharing memories, which is still a little weird doing through telepathy, but ignoring that, the memories they share don't tie in with what you said."
"Well people change. And both parts of his life are only part of the story." Kara said. "And they will both form part of your story, but your story is so much more than that."
"I guess."
"Have you looked through this stuff?" Kara asked.
"Not really. It seemed a little weird to, I mean I didn't know him and it feels like snooping"
"Want to do it together?" Kara suggested.
"Sure."
"You were a lot more enthusiastic at Midvale."
"That was learning about you. This is … I don't know … I just don't feel any type of connection."
"You don't have to and you don't have to search. This is about what you need. But maybe you'll will find something in here that will give you that connection."
"I guess." The teen said before pulling a box out of a wardrobe.
After a few minutes of looking through his things Alex noticed her mother seemed lost in thought.
"Are you okay doing this?" The teen asked feeling guilty.
"What do you mean?" Kara asked looking back at her daughter.
"You look, I don't know, sad."
"I'm not." Kara said, earning a sceptical look from her daughter. In response Kara repeated. "I'm not. I promise. I was just getting lost in memories."
"Like what?"
"Like if I told you, you'd be scarred for life."
"What?" The teen asked before figuring out what her mother was getting at and saying. "Gross. Forget I asked."
Smiling Kara looked through a box as the teenage Alex pulled a small metal object out of the back of a drawer.
"Any idea what this is?" The teen asked looking at it.
"I don't know. It kind of looks familiar." Kara said holding out her hand.
Passing the cube to her mother the teenager watched as Kara turned it over a few times before running her fingers over it. After a few moments they heard a click and the cube opened revealing a crystal.
"Any idea?" The teenager asked as Kara took the crystal out of the open box. But as she touched it started to pulse. Moments later Kara felt a crushing pain in her head and collapsed to the ground.
"Mom!" Her daughter cried as she dropped down next to her. Not getting a response she shouted. "Alex! Help!"
"What happened?" Alex asked limping into the room with MJ having heard her niece's cries for help.
"I don't know, she took that crystal and then collapsed." The teenager said looking upset.
"Kara? Kara can you hear me?" The older Alex asked dropping down next to her sister. Seeing her start to stir she repeated. "Kara?"
"Alex?" Kara asked confused.
"You okay?"
"I think so." Kara said sitting up. As she did so she clutched her head.
"What's wrong?" Her daughter asked.
"I'm okay." Kara said pulling her in for a hug.
"Are you okay?" The teen asked pulling back.
"I'm okay." Kara said.
"You're crying." Her daughter pointed out.
"I'm fine." Kara said wiping a stray tear from her face.
"Let's make sure of that." The older Alex said frowning. "I'm going to run some scans." She added as she helped her sister to her feet. She then looked at her son and added. "MJ, stay with Alex, if anything strange happens let me know."
"But-" The teenage Alex started protesting.
"I'll bring your mom back as soon as I have run the scans." The older Alex assured her. "Stay away from that crystal." She added before leading her sister out of the room.
"This is where I wish I had super hearing." The teenage Alex said to her cousin.
"We could follow them." MJ suggested. "I mean it is not like I can get into more trouble. Plus it would mean we are away from the crystal."
