Baratta jennifer - Sam Lane will be another mystery for them to worry about.
A few days later ...
"I know it is hard, but try to enjoy your time off." Eliza said as she joined her youngest in the lounge at Midvale.
"I'm trying, but it is hard when I know he is up to something." Kara said staring out at the rough sea.
"Good will always come through." Eliza said.
"How can you be so sure?" Kara asked.
"Experience."
"That storm is really moving in." Kara said. "I'm surprised the kids aren't back."
"It probably took them by surprise." Eliza said. "But I am sure they will call if they need help."
"Who needs help?" The older Alex asked approaching them.
"No one." Eliza said. "I was saying the kids would call if they need help."
"I'm going to call Alex." Kara said taking out her phone, moments before the front door opened.
"You okay?" The older Alex asked as four wet teens came into the house with Chewie.
"Just drenched." MJ said.
"Try not to drip on the floor." The older Alex said as the dog shook the water off his fur.
"Sorry." The teenage Alex said lifting Chewie into her arms.
"Go get changed." Kara said grabbing a blanket and using it to wrap Chewie in as she took him off her daughter.
"I'll get some hot drinks ready." Eliza said walking to the kitchen as the four youngsters disappeared.
"No more spraying water." Kara said to Chewie, who tried to escape the blanket. "Let's get you dry, then you can run around." She added as she walked to the lounge and sat down before drying the dog.
"You spoil him." Her sister pointed out as she moved to the window.
"How can I not? Look at him." Kara said as she dried drying his fur.
"Right now he looks like an overgrown drowned rat." Alex countered.
"Don't you listen to her. She's just grouchy." Kara said to Chewie.
"That fog is really moving in." Alex said staring out of the window.
"You thinking not normal fog?" Kara asked.
"No. But I am now." Alex commented.
"It's just fog. Midvale gets it, remember." Eliza said returning to the room with a tray of hot drinks.
"Maybe I should go for a fly around?" Kara said.
"Unless that is what they want?" Alex countered.
"Who is they?" Eliza asked.
"Indomitable and co."
"I'm going to go look." Kara said passing Alex the blanket wrapped dog.
"No, wait-" Alex said, but she was already gone.
"You shouldn't have encouraged her." Eliza said to Alex.
"I told her not to go." Alex reminded her.
"Only after suggesting something was wrong." Eliza said.
"Kara suggested it not me." Alex argued as she sniffed. "Wow, you stink." Alex said to Chewie just as a huge flash lit up the room, moments before it went dark.
"Just what we need." Alex said putting Chewie down. "Flashlights and candles still in the same place?" She asked her mother.
"Yes." Eliza confirmed as Alex moved to the sideboard and started taking the items out just as the younger members of the family converged.
"Power's out." MJ said.
"Thank you for that insight." His sister said dryly.
"Take these." The older Alex said handing each kid a flashlight.
"Where's mom?" The teenage Alex asked.
"Went to check on the storm." Eliza said. "She'll be back soon."
"Should we be worried?" The younger Kara asked.
"It's just a storm." Her mother said. "It probably took out a transformer." She added just as there was another flash followed by a bang. Following the sound they saw a shadowy figure standing in the doorway resulting in the entire group shining the flashlights at the figure.
"Delicate eyes here." The older Kara said covering her eyes.
"Everything okay?" Her sister asked lowering her flashlight.
"It's fine. But I'm going to get changed." Kara said.
"Do you want a flashli-" Her daughter started to offer, only for them to hear a loud thud.
"I'm fine." Kara said walking upstairs as there was a bang on the front door.
"Stay here." The older Alex instructed as she walked to the door.
"Ma'am." Agent Moon shouted over the storm as Alex opened the door.
"Everything okay?" Alex asked letting the Agent in.
"Storm warning has gone up a level." Moon explained. "If you want to evacuate, you have ten minutes."
"We'll ride it out here." Alex said. "But you and Miller should get in here."
"Yes Ma'am. We'll secure the outside first." Moon said.
Nodding Alex shut the door and turned to see her daughter who asked.
"Is this just a storm?"
"You have reason to believe it isn't?"
"Wouldn't be the first time." The younger Kara said.
"True." Her mother conceded. "But this storm has been tracked for a few days. Looks pretty natural." She said before looking at everyone.
"We are going to the den. Grab what you need." The older Alex said to everyone.
"Isn't the basement safer?" MJ asked.
"Yes, but it is also colder. The den is easier to escape from. Plus we have barricaded the windows, it is pretty safe." Alex said. "The storm should peak in a couple of hours. But we'll be in there in fifteen minutes. Get whatever you need we'll see you up there."
"House is secure as we can make it." Miller said coming back into the house.
"Thanks." Alex said. "We are going to set up in the den."
"We'll set up downstairs." Miller said.
"You can come in with us." Alex replied.
"We'll stay separate. Just in case this isn't natural." Miller stated.
"Okay." Alex before seeing her sister go to the kitchen.
"Where are you going?" She asked.
"Power's out." Kara reminded her. "I'm going to refreeze the freezer and cool the fridge."
00
"This reminds me of my first Earth storm." The older Kara said as the group sat in the dark room.
"You never forget your first storm." MJ commented from the side before yelping. "Hey, what was that for?"
"You were being an idiot." His sister said as the windows rattled in the wind.
As another bright flash lit up the room Kara heard her daughter's heartbeat increase. Silently Kara pulled her daughter into a hug as MJ and the younger Kara continued their bantering.
"You two going to argue all night?" Diz asked the younger Kara and MJ.
"We aren't arguing." Kara said.
"But if we were, it would help pass the time." MJ pointed out.
"There are better ways to pass time." His mother pointed out.
"We could sing." The older Kara said, still holding her daughter close, a suggestion immediately met by a chorus of. "Nos."
"You are such kill joys." Kara complained. "What about 'I hear'"
"What?" Diz asked lost.
"It's like I Spy, only with hearing rather than seeing which we can't do as it is pitch black." The older Kara explained as her daughter stuck close to her side.
"No." Her sister said.
"Why?"
"Because you cheat and use Super hearing."
00
"Is it over?" MJ asked when he woke up the next morning and saw his mother and Diz remove a board from the window.
"Seems to be." His mother said. "But still no power."
"So no food?" MJ said
"As long as you have your priorities right." Diz commented.
"Food is life."
"Think that is water." His mother said.
"Or spice." The younger Kara said sleepily.
"Too early for movie quotes." MJ said before asking. "Where's aunt Kara?"
"Checking things out. She'll be back soon." The older Alex said. "I'm going to check in with my team. You guys stay here. And keep Chewie in, there could be broken glass."
00
"I'm back." Kara said a few minutes later.
"How is it out there?" Her sister asked.
"Okay. Not as much damage as I expected. A few trees are down, power lines are down. There is a lot of flooding, but other than that it looks okay."
"We are going to get some hot drinks and food." The younger Kara said coming into the kitchen with Diz.
"Not so fast." Alex said. "It could still be dangerous out there. I'll send Mo-" Alex started only to feel her sister kick her. "Ow. What was that for?" She asked turning to her sister.
"What?" Her sister asked waving at Kara and Diz to leave.
"You kicked me." Alex reminded her.
"Technically, if I had kicked you, you wouldn't still be in the house. It was more of a gentle brushing."
"It was a kick. Why did you kick me?" Alex asked.
"You were about to miss a lot of subtext."
"What?" Alex asked lost.
"Diz and Kara want some time alone. You were about to suggested they were chaperoned. It is fine out there." Kara said. "Besides Diz is practically DEO now."
"I can't help being protective. But you are right." Alex said turning back to where Diz and Kara had been standing. "You can- umm, where are they?"
"Probably on the way to the diner." Kara said before asking. "Where is everyone else?"
"MJ is helping mom clear up. Alex is entertaining Chewie in the den."
"Thanks." Kara said jogging up stairs.
"You okay?" Kara asked her daughter.
"It reminded me of Kenf." The teen said.
"Yeah, me too. But there were more of us this time." Kara said.
"I was still scared."
"I know."
"I'm sorry."
"For what?" Kara asked confused.
"Being scared of a storm."
"Firstly, it was a big storm. Secondly, you have been through a lot and it is easy to focus on everything that has happened since coming to Earth, but plenty happened before then as well." Kara said before asking. "How are you doing now?"
"Not freaking out."
"Good." Kara smiled.
"Mom."
"Yeah."
"Thanks for the hug las night."
"Anytime." Kara said hugging her again.
"Glass all gone, it is safe for Chewie." MJ said walking into the room. "Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt."
"You're not." Kara said releasing her daughter. "Why don't you two take Chewie for a walk?"
"Would rather eat." MJ said.
"Kara and Diz have gone to get food, they'll be back soon." His aunt said.
00
"We have food." The younger Kara called as she came into the house.
"Finally." MJ said taking some bags off his sister.
"Everything okay out there?" The older Alex asked.
"Yes. Roads are clear and the town has power. But the lines leaving town are down." The younger Kara said. "Doesn't look like they'll get fixed anytime soon."
"So a barbecue?" MJ asked.
"Do you ever think about something other than your stomach?" Diz asked MJ.
"Not when I'm hungry." MJ said. "Besides it is for aunt Kara as well."
"There are bigger problems than food." The older Kara said.
"What?" Her sister asked.
"Where and how are we going to watch 'It's a wonderful Life'?"
"There is a showing this afternoon in town." Her niece said.
00
"What happened on Kenf?" The older Alex asked her sister and they and Eliza drove into Midvale.
"Sorry, what?" Kara asked confused.
"Kenf. What happened?"
"Nothing major. It was a planet with a very unstable atmosphere. Prone to huge electrical storms. We were caught in one when Alex was about five. She was terrified. Last night brought back memories."
"Why am I only hearing about this now?"
"Because it's not that big a deal. To be honest I had kinda forgotten about it until last night."
"Is Alex okay now?" Eliza asked.
"She's fine. More embarrassed than anything." Kara said before asking her sister. "How do you know about Kenf?"
"Alex told MJ who mentioned it." Her sister said.
"At least she is talking." Kara said before asking. "Have you heard anything from the DEO?
"About what?" Alex asked.
"If the storm was natural."
"No evidence to suggest it wasn't." Alex said.
"But?" Kara asked.
"But while we were holed up Indomitable was pretty active."
00
"What are you two up to?" The younger Kara asked entering the garage where Diz and MJ were standing.
"Man's work." MJ said. "You may go."
"I'm not going to ask." Kara said. "Have you seen Alex?"
"Last I saw she was heading to the beach with Chewie." Diz said looking over to her.
"I'm going to find her, I'll leave you to your man's work." She said giving the two males a suspicious look before leaving the garage and jogging down to the beach where she saw her cousin sitting with Chewie.
"Hey, you okay?" Kara asked her cousin.
"Sure."
"Still thinking about the storm?" Kara guessed as she sat next to her cousin.
"More how useless I am."
"How?"
"I was terrified of a storm."
"Didn't you say it triggered memories?"
"Yeah, from when I was like five." Alex said miserably. "I'm such a coward."
"You are not a coward." Kara assured her cousin.
"I was scared of a storm." Alex reminded her.
"So?" Her cousin asked.
"Kinda makes me a superpowered coward."
"No, it makes you normal."
00
"We have power." MJ said proudly to his sister and cousin thirty minutes later.
"They fixed the line?" The younger Kara asked turning to face MJ and Diz.
"No. Diz found and fixed the generator." MJ said. "Like I said man's work." He then looked at his cousin and asked. "Want to go play some frisbee with Chewie."
"Sure." She said before walking down the beach with him.
"Want to join them?" Diz asked Kara.
"Actually I was thinking that A Wonderful Life still has another eighty minutes to run."
"You want to catch the end of it?" Diz asked confused. "We could probably make the last hour if we go now."
"I love that you'd do that, but what I meant was with MJ and Alex off playing frisbee and the others in town, the house is empty."
The comment earning a smile from Diz who grabbed her hand and led her to the house.
00
"How is the power on, when the power line was very much down?" The older Kara asked seeing lights on in the house when they returned that evening.
"That was Diz." MJ said coming to greet the adults.
"New power we don't know about?" His mother asked confused.
"No, he found and repaired the old generator in the garage."
"You have a generator?" Kara asked Eliza confused.
"That must be thirty years old." Eliza said. "I thought that died years ago. How did he fix it?"
"He said a motor is a motor." MJ shrugged. "He also said we probably don't want to stress it too much, but it should keep the fridge and freezer going for a while."
"Where is he now?"
"Moving the fuel from his car to storage."
"Why aren't you helping?" His mother asked.
"I sent Alex, she offers more in the heavy lifting department than I do." He shrugged as Diz came up the steps a little breathlessly.
"There's enough fuel to last for a week." He said. "It's in the cabinet so should be fireproof."
"Thank you, that was very thoughtful." Eliza smiled.
"I can heat the water if you want a shower?" The older Kara offered.
"Thanks."
"Perhaps we should open presents now?" MJ asked.
"Why?" His mother asked.
"Who knows what will happen tonight." MJ said.
"You're right." His aunt said.
"I am?" He asked sensing a trap.
"We should all get a present. I'll get the sweaters."
"I forgot about those." MJ said. "Should have stayed quiet."
