Baratta jennifer -Thank you.

"Why do you look so miserable?" Lena asked as she sat opposite the older Alex several days later.

"There was a big storm when we were in Midvale."

"I know. It was all over the news. But I thought no one got hurt."

"True, but the storm brought back some of Alex's repressed memories about her time on Kenf."

"Kenf?" Lena asked.

"A planet with big storms apparently."

"But she is okay now?" Lena asked.

"Yes."

"Can Alex cause physical manifestations of her fears?" Lena asked.

"Not that I know of."

"Okay, so what's the issue?"

"I had never heard of Kenf. As in Kara never told me about Kenf."

"Alex, Kara was gone for a very long time, far longer than she has been back for. It would be impossible for her to compress everything that happened into the time she has been back."

"It's just another reminder of how I let her down."

"Well do you think Kara wants you wallowing in self pity?" Lena asked.

"That's not what I'm doing."

"Let me ask you this. Do you remember when you and Kelly took the kids to Disney Land and Kara got lost?"

"Of course."

"Have you told Kara, as in your sister, about it?" Lena asked.

"No."

"Why?"

"It's not come up."

"Thus proving my point." Lena said smugly.

"I hate it when you use logic against me." Alex complained as Kara walked into the lounge.

"What's going on?"

"We were just talking about a Disney Land trip." Lena said.

"The one where you lost Kara?" The older Kara asked her sister.

"How did you know about that?" Alex asked.

"MJ and Kara told me." She shrugged. "Were they not meant to?"

"Steve, hi!" Kara smiled. "And congratulations."

"Technically that's on Martin, not me." Steve said. "But thank you. And I hear MJ got into BU."

"He did."

"Boston won't know what hit them." Steve smiled before asking. "How was the break?"

"Good thanks."

"You survived the storm?"

"Yeah, it was a rough night, but after that it was okay." Kara said. "How were things here?"

"Same old, same old."

"I sense a but."

"I assume you didn't keep up with the news?"

"Not really. What's he done?"

"Used Christmas as a PR exercise. He was everywhere." Steve said. "He also set up his own charity."

"Of course he did." Kara muttered.

"But on the bright side I bring you a sticky bun."

"Thanks, but you didn't need to." Kara smiled taking the bun.

"I thought I did. I have a favour to ask."

"Sure. What?"

"There are some more spooked metas coming into the clinic. Would you mind speaking to them?"

"Sure. But why are they spooked?"

"Their friends have been going missing."

"There were many many accidents. Indomitable turned up to all of them and saved the day." Vasquez said.

"Too many to actually be accidents?" Alex asked.

"Possibly." Ruby said.

"But there is no way to prove it." Vasquez said. "And if we made the claim it might look like we are making it up to protect Supergirl."

"Why?"

"Every opportunity he had, he had a dig at Supergirl, who obviously made no effort to defend herself."

"He is really popular." Ruby said.

"It is worse than that." Kara said miserably as she entered the room.

"What?" Alex asked.

"I just turned up to a rescue and I was booed by the onlookers who chanted they wanted Indomitable. Who then landed and showed me up."

"So what's the plan?" Alex asked.

"Maybe this is a good thing." Kara said.

"What do you mean?"

"I need to prioritise Alex. This allows me to do that. I will focus on being Kara Danvers."

"Only Indomitable probably knows who you are, you think he will let you do that?" Vasquez asked.

"I don't know. But right now, if I am being honest, the city doesn't need Supergirl."

"Okay, but what do you need?" Alex asked.

"I don't know." Kara said. "I'm going to CatCo, Steve gave me a lead."

"What's Steve got to do with this?" Alex called after her, but she was already gone.

"Anything we can do to help her?" Ruby asked.

"If I figure that out I will let you know." Alex replied.

00

"Indomitable is trash talking you." Cat said.

"Whatever I do, I can't win. But this whole situation isn't about me. At the moment the city is safer and I'm not doing anything. Maybe Indomitable is doing a better job."

"You okay hanging up the cape?"

"I'm not hanging it up. I am just being selective about when it comes out."

"He seems to be setting things up to turn you into a tool for the DEO. Or a tool for a government."

"Is that so bad?"

"To side you with the government, while trying to ruin your reputation, that raises questions about what his plans are." Cat mused. "There is nothing wrong with playing the game as long as you understand you are playing the game. More importantly you need to understand the rules."

"Pretty sure he isn't playing by the rules." Kara said.

"On that we agree." Cat said. "But he will force you to play by his rules." Cat said.

"You are taking training seriously?" The teenage Alex asked as she noticed her mother had turned up early.

"I always take training seriously. Kind of." Kara replied.

"Has something happened?"

"Next year, you will be off at college and there is a chance you will become a target. It is only a small chance, but no matter how small it is I want to make sure you are prepared."

"What about you?"

"I'm always prepared." Kara shrugged. "Besides your aunt will be watching over me."

"So what's the plan."

"We heard from Frax today, he will be coming back to Earth soon."

"Really?" Alex asked.

"Yes." Kara smiled. "So why don't we work on some of your physical powers today and tie them in with your mental ones when Frax gets back?"

"Okay."

"But we want to mix things up a bit." Kara said. "So today we have some added help."

"Who?" Alex asked as friendly face entered the room. "Diz?"

"Hey Alex." He waved.

"He is going to be working against you." Kara explained.

"Working against me how?"

"That's up to him. His job is to stop you getting to the flag. He can act or not act however he wants." Kara said. "But until he acts, you can't do anything to him."

"And after?"

"You can do what you want. Well within reason." Kara said. "Like before, if you get hit you lose."

Nodding Alex went to her starting position as Diz moved to the far side of the large training room.

"You can start when you are ready." Kara said causing her daughter to jump onto a ledge before working her way through and over the obstacles. But distracted by Diz's presence Alex missed the beam heading for her and got hit in the back causing her to drop off the ledge onto the ground.

"I'm fine." She called getting up.

"You sure?" Kara asked approaching.

"Yes."

"Okay, I'll restart it." Kara replied going to the control room as Diz walked to the other side of the room. As the exercise restarted Diz started to jog back and forth, his movements once again taking Alex's focus who once again ended up getting hit.

"You okay? You are normally more focused." Kara said.

"How can I be when I don't know what Diz will do?" Alex said.

"I've not done anything." Diz pointed out.

"That makes it worse." Alex complained.

"Out there you don't know who are the bad guys." Diz said.

"Wow, you spend too much time at the DEO." Kara said before asking her daughter. "Ready to go again?"

"Yes."

As Alex hit the floor for the twentieth time Diz asked. "Do I actually need to be here?" The question earning a glare from Alex.

"You almost made it that time." Kara said to her daughter, not wanting to destroy her confidence. "And Diz is just trying to goad you, so he doesn't have to take you on."

"I know. The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." Alex said.

"This isn't actually war." Kara said. "But don't fall for his tricks."

"I won't." Alex said looking at Diz again.

"Okay, get to the start." Kara said going back to the control room and restarting the exercise. This time Alex ignored Diz and charged towards her target beating off the robot attackers. But as she jumped to one of the ledges she suddenly felt a wave of dizziness and lost her balance, missing the ledge and falling to the ground before being hit by several robotic blasts.

"You okay?" Kara asked running towards her daughter.

"Yes." Alex said before saying. "No." And throwing up.

"Sorry." Diz said approaching the pair.

"Can you get some water?" Kara asked Diz.

"Sure." He said disappearing.

"Can you sit up?" Kara asked her daughter.

"Moving bad." The teen said.

"Okay. Stay there, I'll clean up." Kara said before moving at superspeed. Once she had done she returned to her daughter's side. As she did so Alex said.

"Sorry."

"For what?"

"Throwing up. Losing."

"You have nothing to apologise for." Kara said as Diz returned with a bottle of water and some mints.

"Sorry." Diz repeated.

"S'okay." Alex said sitting motionless with her eyes shut.

00

"How are you feeling?" Kara asked later that evening.

"Ergh." The teen said.

"Less ergh?"

"Maybe. Pretty sure there are still two of you."

"Well surely that is a good thing?" Kara smiled.

"Lame." Alex replied before asking. "How was I meant to win?"

"What do you mean?"

"I couldn't do anything to Diz until he acted, but as soon as he acted I lost before I could do anything."

"That is the purpose of training. To figure out how to over come what challenges there will be. It may involve losing a hundred times, but you'll get there."

"So you aren't going to tell me the answer?"

"It'd be way better if you figure it out yourself. But if you really want I can share my thoughts."

"It's okay. I'll think about it some more first." Alex said.
