Baratta jennifer - Things will get better for Diz
A week later …
As Diz stood a several feet away from the coffins and the rest of the mourners, he was well aware of the glares he was getting and he questioned why he was there.
He suddenly felt a warm familiar hand take hold of his.
"Kar?" He said looking round. "What are you doing here?"
"We weren't going to let you come alone."
"We?" He asked turning and seeing the rest of the family approach.
"Better question, why didn't you tell me you were coming?" Kara asked.
"Didn't want to bother you. You were at Stanford."
"I'm with you all the way." The younger Kara said squeezing his hand tighter as the others joined them. Their presence stopping the glares being aimed at Diz as the Priest started the ceremony.

"Why didn't you tell me you were going?" Kara asked as she sat next to Diz that afternoon.
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
"I didn't want to drag you into that world. Plus, it didn't seem right. I mean you didn't get to go to your mom's funeral." Diz said.
"I love you for trying to protect me." Kara said. "But you don't need to. Especially today."
"Thank you for being there."
"I'll always be there." Kara reminded him as she hugged him. "How are you doing?"
"I thought it would bring closure. It didn't. I shouldn't have gone."
"You would have regretted it if you hadn't." Kara pointed out.
"How long can you stay for?"
"Just tonight, I have to get back for my last exam."
"You should go now." Diz said.
"No way. Tonight I am here with you. Besides it is open book tomorrow."
"Then can we go for a walk? This house is driving me crazy."
00
"Where's Diz?" Alex asked her daughter when she came home and found her daughter reading a text book alone.
"Gone for a run with MJ."
"How's he doing?" Her aunt asked.
"Still confused about how he is meant to feel. And feeling cabin fever."
"Hence the run?"
"Actually that was because he felt guilty about me not studying."
"What made him change his mind about the funeral?" Alex asked.
"Lena. She has been sharing her family experience." The younger Kara explained as they heard the front door open and close before Chewie scampered into the room and jumped up on the younger Kara just before the teenage Alex came into the room with her mother.
"Hi." The teenage Alex greeted.
"You ready for graduation?" Her cousin asked.
"What do you mean ready? I thought I just had to turn up."
"It is so much more than that." The older Kara said. "It is the first day of the rest of your life."
"Isn't that everyday? Besides does anything really change?" The teenage Alex asked.
"Yes. High School is where people hate you for no reason. From here on out there will be a reason." The younger Kara said.
"A career at Hallmark awaits." Her mother said dryly.
"What? You taught me that." Her daughter responded.
"Don't you listen to such cynicism." The older Kara said to her daughter before asking her niece. "When do you want me to fly you back?"
"There's no need. J'onn is getting me in an hour." Her niece said.
"So we get you for another hour?" The older Kara said.
"Pretty sure she is trying to revise." The teenage Alex said.
"It's fine. I stopped taking things in an hour ago." She said shutting the textbook.
"This time tomorrow it will all be over." Her mother said.
"And I can't wait." Her daughter replied.
"So what's your plans for the summer?" The older Kara asked her niece.
"Not sure yet, but I was thinking about asking grandma if we can stay in Midvale for a week. The break will do Diz good."
"I'm sure she'll love that." Her mother said.
"You going to be okay with that? Especially as MJ is going to be with Uncle James." The younger Kara asked.
"I'll be fine." Her mother said before looking at the younger Alex and asking.
"Any plans to go to Dakran?"
"Nope." The teen said.
"Fiancé coming here then?" Her cousin asked.
"That still isn't funny." The younger Alex said.
"Kinda is." The younger Kara countered.
00
"Everything okay?" Alex asked when she came into the kitchen the next morning where Diz was cooking.
"Morning." He said turning.
"You know you really don't have to cook."
"I want to do." He said. "Something to say thanks for all you've done."
"You didn't need to." Alex said as her sister entered the kitchen.
"Is that fresh food?"
"Super nose a new power?" Alex asked amused.
"I have always been able to sniff out good food." Kara shrugged.
"Sad, but true." Her sister agreed before asking. "Where's Alex?"
"Walking Chewie." Kara explained as her sister's phone rang.
"Danvers." Alex answered, assuming it would be bad news. "What? … where abouts? ... Okay." She then ended the call and looked at her sister.
"We have to go."
"Why?"
"Army of blades."
"What?"
"Army of blades." Alex repeated.
"See that didn't tell me anything." Kara said following her sister out of the house.
00
"Um Alex, there is an army of blade people." Kara said over the radio two minutes later.
"See, I said that." Alex reminded her as she drove to the DEO as fast as she could, while speaking on the phone with her team at the DEO and Kara.
"They seem to be able to transform their bodies into anything." Vasquez said as she watched the screens in the control room.
"Including Kryptonite?" Alex asked.
"Don't know." Vasquez said.
"Will the suit protect me?" Kara asked.
"Probably, but I can't guarantee it." Alex said.
"I'll be careful." Kara said. "Any chance these are Terminators?"
"No." Alex said.
"You sure? The remind me a lot of the T-1000." Kara replied.
"Focus." Alex said, getting grumpy that she wasn't at the DEO yet.
"The DEO team will be there soon." Vasquez said. "Can you hold them back until then?"
"Sure." Kara said before moaning.
"What's wrong?" Alex asked.
"Indomitable has just shown up."
"Why? These are aliens, aren't they?" Alex asked.
"I can watch Indomitable from here." Vasquez reported. "Supergirl you can focus on the aliens."
00
"What's happening?" Alex asked rushing into the DEO control room a few minutes later.
"Supergirl is holding her own, despite the backseat driving."
"I was just asking questions." Alex protested.
"I didn't mean you. I meant Indomitable."
"What's he doing?" Alex asked.
"Live streaming commentary, and pretty critical commentary at that."
"How's Kara taking it?"
"Based on her suit readings she is getting a little stressed." Vasquez said as they saw the DEO squad arrive on scene moments before they started to collect the aliens that Supergirl had restrained.
00
"You okay?" Alex asked when her sister arrived at the DEO.
"They looked worse than they were, they were pretty weak." Kara said.
"Have you come across them before?" Alex asked.
"No. Never."
"Could they not be aliens? I mean they can transform their bodies, could they be humans pretending to be aliens?" Ruby asked.
"Until the DNA comes in we won't know." Alex said before Kara asked.
"What has Indomitable said?"
"Still pulling things apart play by play." Vasquez said. "And with every word there is more social media demanding he deals with the defence of the country."
"Of course there is." Kara muttered as Vasquez pulled a face.
"What?" Kara asked.
"Indomitable is responding to those requests."
"How?" Alex questioned.
"I'll put it on screen." Vasquez said tapping her tablet under Indomitable and his favourite journalist, Poppy Hunter, appeared on screen.
"Welcome back viewers." Poppy Hunter greeted. "I am here with Indomitable where we are reviewing tonight's attack on the city. As you can see from the footage, those aliens were terrifying. Now while aliens are outside of Indomitable's duties, he was there as a commentator for Channel nine. And as much as I would like to praise Indomitable's commentary skills, we need to focus on what actually happened and how much danger we were all in. As the pictures show they were very scary and violent aliens. Even though Indomitable is prevented from protecting this country from the alien scourge, I for one was grateful to have him so close, in case he was needed."
"Now now Poppy, let's not forget that Supergirl and the DEO dealt with the threat … eventually." Indomitable jumped in.
"But she made errors?" Poppy asked.
"Absolutely. And not the type of errors I'd expect from a veteran. But lets not forget Supergirl is old and has been kept out late most nights. The mistakes could be driven by tiredness … or age."
"I'm not old." Kara protested to her sister. "Besides I am Kryptonian, I age so much less than humans."
"He is trying to goad you." Alex warned as Poppy Hunter said to Indomitable.
"Social media is full of people demanding you take over. What do you say to that?"
"I am flattered that people of this city trust me. But the government has made their position clear, so I won't interfere. But I will be there at every alien attack providing commentary and when, I mean if, Supergirl fails I will be there to take over."
"He's turning alien fights into a reality TV show." Kara muttered as Vasquez turned off the broadcast.
"Get a rush on that DNA." Alex said to Vasquez. "Something tells me Indomitable is behind the recent spate of alien attacks. So look for any signs of modifications."
"Think this could be linked to what Brainy reported?"
"I really hope not. If it is we are going to have big problems soon." Alex sighed before looking at her sister.
"Kara, you have to make a choice." Alex said.
"Of what?"
"To fight or not. If you stop turning up, he will make a move. And that's fine, you've done more than enough. But if you want to fight you need to be all in."
"I know."
"It's your last summer before Alex goes to college." Her sister said.
"I know." Kara said.
"You don't owe this city anything."
00
"Hi mom." The teenage Alex said as her mother got home.
"Hi, already for tomorrow?" Kara asked her.
"Pretty sure you are more excited by my graduation than I am." The teen said.
"That is … true." Kara smiled.
"What's wrong?" The teen asked noticing her mother's crinkle.
"I need to talk to you."
"About?"
"The summer. We have a choice to make."
"Is this about Indomitable?" Alex asked before adding. "I saw the news."
"Yes." Kara confirmed. "This summer, if I don't stay here and fight, Indomitable will take over."
"Are you sending me away?"
"No." Kara said. "But if I do fight it means we can't hang out as much. And we can't go to Argo."
"If Indomitable takes over we aren't going to have a home here anyway." The teen said. "But if you stay, won't Indomitable do something else, maybe even attack you. If he does can you win?"
"We're a bit off that." Kara pointed out. "But just because he looks powerful doesn't mean he is. If it comes to it I'll find a way to beat him."
"Okay." The teen replied.
00
"You know she is guaranteed to graduate, you don't have to look so stressed?" The older Alex said to her sister than evening.
"That's what Weevil's grandmother thought." Kara pointed out.
"Seriously, you forget to meet Lena for lunch on a regular basis, but you remember random TV plots from thirty years ago."
"It is probably closer to forty years." Kara shrugged. "But I'm not worried about Alex's graduation."
"Then what's with the frown?"
"I just feel bad about letting Alex down. I mean it is her last summer before college."
"Did she guilt you?"
"No. She was fine with it. More worried about me getting hurt."
"Well, she's a teen. She'd probably prefer to spend summer here than on Argo." Her sister pointed out.
"I guess."
"Plus you will spend plenty of time with her."
"I still feel bad."
"That's because you are a good mom." Alex said.
"Don't feel like it right now."
"If Alex was bothered, you'd know."
"How can you be so sure?"
"She'd tell MJ and he would blab."
"Blab?" Kara asked.
"Yes blab. And there has been no blabbing. But if it makes you feel better I will interrogate him later." Alex offered.
"Comforting and scary." Kara said before asking. "How's Diz?"
"Desperate to move out."
"He can stay with me." Kara said.
"He doesn't want to impose. Besides Wildcat will be back soon and there is no evidence that Diz is in danger."
"Apart from his dead parents." Kara said.
"That's the thing, apart from the kidnapping element, there is no connection to the others."
"Except having a child who is a meta." Kara pointed out. "Have you go the autopsy report yet?"
"Yes, finally got it from NCPD." Alex said. "Well unofficially anyway."
"What did it show?"
"Nothing apart from the obvious. Both killed by a single gunshot wound to the head. Signs of a struggle and markings on the wrists from where they were secured. Diz's father had liver damage from excessive liver consumption."
"What about drugs?" Kara asked.
"Negative."
"Did they have puncture marks?" Kara asked.
"Umm, give me a second." Alex said pulling up the report. "I am such an idiot. How did I miss this?"
"What?" Kara asked.
"Both had puncture marks, but negative tox screen."
"So they were drugged with something that breaks down rapidly or the marks were from drawing blood?" Kara guessed.
"Yes." Alex said. "Which means your theory was probably right. But I don't see how it works genetically. I mean plenty of parents have a child who is a meta and others who aren't. We must be missing something."
"What about the others you think are at risk?"
"They are all fine. So either we are wrong, or they know we know."
"You think there is another mole?"
"I don't know. I hope not, but I can't rule it out." Alex replied. "But if there is there is nothing we can do about it right now. So tonight we are going to have fun."
"I don't really feel like it." Kara said.
"I know. But if you don't have fun that is letting Indomitable win."
"Are you trying to blackmail me into having fun?" Kara asked.
"Why? Is it working?"
