Baratta jennifer - cat will be back later with more support

"Hi MJ." Kara said as she and Lena approached MJ and his group in MIT aquatics centre a couple of weeks later.

"Aunt Kara?" MJ asked confused before looking round. "Wait, is mom here?"

"No, just us." Lena answered. "But I am sure we can also cramp your style." She added before looking at the female teen and greeting. "You must be Mel."

"Hi." Mel waved from MJ's side.

"Hi Martin." Kara smiled as she sat next to him.

"Hey." He replied.

"So Alex finally told you?" MJ asked his aunt.

"No. Cat did. Better question is why didn't you?"

"Alex swore us to secrecy. And she is more scary than you." MJ said.

"She didn't want me here?" Kara asked.

"Of course she did, but she didn't think you'd have time to come down here. Plus she said her contribution was minimal."

"All contribution counts." Lena said before commenting. "You guys don't seem to be in the right clothes."

"What?" Martin asked looking down at his clothes.

"No support for MIT." Lena pointed out.

"We can't support MIT." MJ pointed out.

"Really?" Mel asked.

"Yes. Really." MJ said.

"You guys are the enemy." Martin agreed.

"You know you are sitting in the MIT area?" Mel asked.

"Which is why I have not made any jokes about MIT." MJ shrugged. "But then again pretty sure I could take on all these nerds. I mean what was the score last week?"

"Wow, you are competitive." Mel said.

"And going home alone." Martin added to MJ.

"It's fine, where as all our sports teams are weak this year, we win academically." Mel said.

"That's what all the losers say." MJ smiled.

Any response from Mel was cut off by the twelve teams coming out to the poolside.

As Alex's team completed the course the five teens celebrated, including Matt hugging Alex.

"Something going on there?" Lena asked from where she sat next to Kara.

"Not that I know of."

"Only because they are both too clueless." Mel said from MJ's far side.

"Or scared." Martin commented.

"Well Matt is. Alex is just clueless." MJ added.

"Another family trait." Lena commented to her friend, who glared back as the robot was recovered from the pool before the announcer stated the round was over.

"Is that it?" Kara asked.

"No. Round two is the destruction test." Martin said.

"Best part." MJ added.

"You've read up on the competition?" Mel asked.

"No."

"Then how do you know it is the best part?" Mel asked.

"Destruction test. Clue is in the name." MJ said.

"Pretty sure you are about to be disappointed." Mel commented.

"Okay, this is way more boring than I was expecting." MJ said as the next round progressed.

"What exactly were you expecting?" Lena asked him.

"I don't know, explosions." MJ said."They need to have an underwater robot wars."

"Not sure Alex would agree, I mean it is going to hurt if it breaks." Mel said.

"She has only been on the team two weeks." MJ countered.

"And has pulled several over nighters in that time." Mel reminded him.

"Still only two weeks, she'll get over it." MJ countered.

"And you'd used to be such a compassionate child." Lena commented.

"Really?" Mel asked looking at Lena.

"Yes." Lena confirmed. "I have many stories."

"I'd like to hear them." Mel said.

"I have pictures if you want." Lena offered.

"She doesn't." MJ said as the announcer came over the tannoy and announced it was Alex's team's turn.

"Saved by Alex once again." Martin said to MJ as all attention turned to the large screen, which showed the robot going into the water before being subjected to various tests.

"This is worse than Chess. At least there you can see the pieces move. I'm not even sure what we are looking for." MJ commented after a couple of minutes.

"That doesn't look great." Martin said seeing a crack on the screen.

"The joint failed." Lena said. "It's a catastrophic failure." She added as Kara saw the disappointment on her daughter's face.

"Next year we will win." Jane said as the group packed up the boxes.

"You're assuming we are all coming back." One of the guys said.

"You are aren't you?" Jane asked him.

"She'll harass you until you agree." Matt warned.

"Fine, I'm in." He said.

"Good. And you?" Jane asked turning to Alex. Before Alex could respond though she heard her name being called. Turning she saw her mother.

"Mom? What are you doing here?" Alex asked.

"Where else was I going to be?" Kara said hugging her.

"How did you even know about today?"

"Cat." Kara said. "Better question is why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought you'd be busy." Alex countered before hugging Lena.

"Hello Alex." Lena said before pulling away. As she did Alex noticed that her team was staring at her. "Right this is my mom and Lena, and these are Matt, Jane, Phil and Gordo." Alex listed.

"Lena as in Luthor?" Jane asked.

"Yes." Lena confirmed.

"You had connections we didn't exploit?" Jane asked Alex as she wrapped an arm round her shoulder. "You have so much to learn."

"Not everyone is as driven as you." Gordo pointed out to Jane.

"Can I take you guys out for a celebratory meal?" Lena asked.

"But we lost?" Phil said.

"Winning isn't everything." Lena said. "And you took and innovative approach. So what do you say?"

"Are you sure?" Gordo asked.

"I was only joking about exploiting connections." Jane added.

"You are Alex's friends, so it would be my pleasure." Lena said before looking at MJ, Martin and Mel. "You can also come. But first I have a question."

"What?" MJ asked.

"Which one is the jerk?" Lena asked.

"Can't we just leave it?" Alex asked as everyone else pointed at Jeff.

"No." Lena said taking a picture of the teen.

"Not that I am not happy about it, but shouldn't you be over there with your friends?" Kara asked her daughter later that evening.

"Can't I want to hang with you?"

"Of course, but I'm sure your friends want to hang with you."

"Pretty sure Jane is tapping Lena up." Alex said glancing at the group before looking back at her mother and asking. "How bad is it?"

"The tapping up?" Kara asked confused.

"No. National City. I see the news. There is so much hate and fear there."

"It's not just National City." Kara said.

"I know, but it seems worse in National City." The teen said. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me. Especially with exams coming up." Kara smiled. "Besides I have your aunt to look after me. Just focus on yourself." Kara added hugging her. "Come on, you should go back. You are being missed."

"What?" Alex asked looking round and seeing Matt wave at her.

"He seems nice." Kara said.

"He's just a friend." Alex said knowing what her mother was getting at.

"All I said is he seems nice." Kara said innocently.

"He is, but is is still just a friend." Alex said just as they reached the group.

00

"Everything okay?" Lena asked as Kara joined her in the car.

"She's worried about what is happening in National City."

"As well she might. But I guess you didn't tell her that?" Lena said.

"No. I told her to focus on school. Besides, I'm doing enough worrying for both of us."

"As much as I would like to say it is unwarranted worry, this time it is justified. But you have come through worse."

"Have I? Because this feels bad." Kara said.

"I'm not saying it isn't bad, but I am saying you have overcome worse."

"Maybe I have left it too late." Kara said. "I mean the hate grows everyday, what if it can't be reversed?"

"Right now the city is enamoured with Indomitable, but when he makes his move, the city, the world will see their mistake."

"You really believe that?"

"Yes. Because of you."

"What?" Kara asked confused.

"You won the city back after the Children of Liberty." Lena reminded her.

"That was a long time ago."

"And you have grown a lot since then." Lena said. "And while I can't predict how things will turn out, I do know with absolute certainty, if you lose faith we have no chance."
