Episode 4

(The Princess is carrying a near unconscious Jamie through a green gas filled tunnel, using her torch to see where they're going. They're nearing the end of the tunnel, when some slimy substance drips down from the ceiling. The Princess and Jamie look up, seeing a Macra hanging from the ceiling. It crawls around the walls, coming down and blocking their path. While Jamie continues to cough violently, the Princess turns back around, to see the two Macra from before closing in on them. The one closest rears up, almost as if laughing, its claws snapping excitedly, as they reach out to grab the Princess and Jamie. Thinking quickly, the Princess pushes Jamie into a small alcove near the bottom of the tunnel wall, before following him in. Still coughing, the pair push themselves back against the wall, as the Macra gather around and try to reach in to grab them, but it proves difficult with their huge claws.)

JAMIE: (Coughing) Now what? We're…We're trapped in here!

PRINCESS: I don't know, Jamie. Let's just…just try and stay out of reach.

(But as Macra twist their claws this way and that, they begin to edge closer into the crevice, getting closer to the Princess and Jamie.)

JAMIE: Get…Get back!

(Jamie kicks the claw back.)

PRINCESS: Jamie, don't!

(But the Macra manages to clamp its claw onto his outstretched leg. Jamie struggles but is unable to stop the Macra from pulling him out.)

PRINCESS: Jamie!

(The Princess grabs Jamie's hand and tries to pull back, but the only change is that she's pulled out too.)

JAMIE: It's no good! Leave me!

PRINCESS: Jamie!

(Jamie manages to push the Princess away so she's not pulled out with him. But the second he's pulled out by one Macra, another reaches in and grabs the Princess by the waist with its claw.)

PRINCESS: Claws off! Let me go!

(The Princess struggles but is unable to free herself as the Macra pulls her out. The Macra holds her up triumphantly, shaking her about, while the other dangles Jamie from his foot. But in doing so, Jamie manages to grab a plank of wood from the floor. He swings up with all his might, hitting the claw. The sudden pain causes the Macra to drop him. Jamie pushes on, coughing as he does, and gets back to his feet. He pushes himself onwards, whacking the Macra holding the Princess.)

PRINCESS: Jamie, no, get back!

(But it's too late. The Macra holding her, swings its free claw knocking Jamie into the tunnel wall.)

PRINCESS: Jamie!

(The Macra begins to squeeze its claw, as the Princess fights the urge to scream in pain. It seems like it's about to snap her in two, when suddenly a draught blows through the tunnel. A draught of clean air, that pushes the toxic green gas away. This distracts the Macra. At which point the Princess slams her torch down on the Macra's claw, breaking it in the process. Plunged into darkness, the Princess hits the ground, freed from the claw.)

PRINCESS: Jamie?!

JAMIE: Princess? I…I cannae see…

PRINCESS: It's all right, I've got you. Just hold my hand, come on.

(The Princess leads Jamie through the pitch-black tunnels, narrowly evading the confused Macra.)

JAMIE: This is hopeless. We cannae see a thing.

PRINCESS: Shh! They'll hear you, and I very much doubt they rely on sight as much as we do.

JAMIE: But how can we…can we get out of here in the dark?

(They make it to the end of the tunnel, where they see a distant faint light coming from around the next corner.)

JAMIE: Wait…what's that?

PRINCESS: A way out. Come on!

(The Princess and Jamie run down the tunnel and around the corner, where they find an old boarded up lift shaft, with some light shining down it.)

JAMIE: You think it still works?

PRINCESS: It better. They're coming back!

(Looking back the way they came, the Princess and Jamie see the three Macra scuttling towards them. What's more, while the toxic green gas had been dissipating, it seems to be getting thicker once again.)

JAMIE: Oh, and this stuff's back again!

PRINCESS: Never mind that, run!

(The Princess and Jamie run to the lift shaft and quickly pull away the planks of wood blocking their entrance. The Macra meanwhile have come around the corner and are hurrying towards their prey. With the last of the wood removed, the Princess and Jamie jump into the old lift.)

JAMIE: How does it work?!

PRINCESS: How do you think?

(Jamie looks around the lift before spotting a lever. He quickly pushes it up and the lift begins to slowly ascend.)

PRINCESS: Good guess.

JAMIE: Get back!

(Jamie pushes the Princess and himself back against the lift wall as the lead Macra desperately tries to grab them with its claw. But it's unable to reach and has to pull its claw back, as the lift rises into the rocks above. Safe at last, Jamie and the Princess catch their breath, in the non-toxic air.)

JAMIE: Where do you suppose this is taking us?

PRINCESS: Somewhere in the Colony I imagine. This must have been part of their old mine, before the Macra took over. There's no telling where in the Colony it'll take us.

(Then, as the lift begins to slow, the Princess and Jamie can hear singing.)

CHEER CAPTAIN: (Singing) What do you know?

CHEERLEADERS: (Singing) We all know Control is right, and we must obey!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Let them know. Let them know.

CHEERLEADERS: Let them know they're happy!

(As the lift comes to a stop, the doors open, but the Princess and Jamie have disappeared. That is until they each lean out from behind door, Jamie on the left and the Princess on the right. The Princess, after looking, eagerly hurries out the lift and over to the nearby door.)

CHEER CAPTAIN: Greet the morning with a shout.

CHEERLEADERS: Everyone up. The sun is out.

CHEER CAPTAIN: Rah, rah, rah!

CHEERLEADERS: Rah, rah, rah! Cheers for the Colony. We're the gang that works the hardest, and we must obey. Obey Control. Ring the bell.

(The Princess opens the door, peering into the next room with Jamie. It's a large hall with rows of cheerleaders practicing, with their cheer captain at the front to lead them. The only difference in their Colony uniform is a white sash across their shoulders.)

PRINCESS: (Excited whisper) Cheerleaders!

JAMIE: What?

CHEER CAPTAIN: Rah, rah, rah!

CHEERLEADERS: Rah, rah, rah!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Work well!

CHEERLEADERS: Ring the bell!

PRINCESS: Cheerleaders, Jamie. They're like you.

JAMIE: I dinnae make noises like that.

PRINCESS: No. Like you when you were a piper with your bagpipes. They encourage the workers.

JAMIE: That wisnae what pipers did.

PRINCESS: Don't ruin it.

CHEER CAPTAIN: Oh, that's much better. But we'll do it again, and this time with more feeling. And don't forget our job is to inspire the others. Our brave workers who are doing such a dangerous job. All right?

CHEERLEADERS: All right!

PRINCESS: Let's join in!

JAMIE: Oh, now hold on, Princess. Remember, we've just escaped those beasties down there.

PRINCESS: Oh, yes…

JAMIE: Ay, so I say we sneak out of here and try and rescue the Doctor and Polly.

PRINCESS: And Ben.

JAMIE: Maybe, if we've time.

PRINCESS: Jamie, it's not his fault!

JAMIE: I'm no arguing this now. Now keep your voice down and follow me.

(Jamie carefully sneaks out of the room they're in and into the hall with the Princess behind him. The two then make their way along the wall cautiously, as the cheerleaders start singing again.)

CHEER CAPTAIN: (Singing) What do you know?!

CHEERLEADERS: (Singing) We all know Control is right, and we must obey!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Let them know. Let them know.

CHEERLEADERS: Let them know they're happy!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Greet the morning with a shout.

CHEERLEADERS: Everyone up. The sun is out.

CHEER CAPTAIN: Rah, rah, rah!

CHEERLEADERS: Rah, rah, rah!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Oh, that's very good! That's beginning to sound like something. It still needs a bit more clarity, and I think that the girls could…

(Having reached the door out, Jamie and the Princess freeze.)

PRINCESS: (Quietly) Jamie? I think they might have spotted us.

(They look back, finding everyone in the room staring at them in surprise.)

JAMIE: (Quietly) I think you might be right.

CHEER CAPTAIN: Say, how did you get there?

JAMIE: Oh, well, er, we just, as a matter of fact–

CHEER CAPTAIN: Oh, I see. You're the two new dancers.

JAMIE: New dancers?

PRINCESS: (Excitedly) Yes! (Calmer) Yes, that's us. We're the new dancers, aren't we, Jamie?

JAMIE: Wha… Oh, ay!

CHEER CAPTAIN: And you got your dance ready?

JAMIE: Our dance?

PRINCESS: Absolutely. We've got the perfect dance, haven't we, Jamie?

JAMIE: Ay…ay…

CHEER CAPTAIN: Well, go ahead. I'll see it now.

JAMIE: You'll see it now?

CHEER CAPTAIN: And don't forget you have to be very good to get into the Happy Colony finals. We want something merry and cheerful.

JAMIE: Merry and cheerful?

CHEER CAPTAIN: Have you any music?

JAMIE: No–No, we don't need it.

PRINCESS: We don't?

JAMIE: We don't.

CHEER CAPTAIN: Go ahead. We'll pick up the rhythm and clap to it. (Singing) All right?

CHEERLEADERS: (Singing) All right!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Well, come on. Get on with it. We haven't got all day.

JAMIE: Oh, ay… (To Princess, quietly) Do you know the Highland Fling?

PRINCESS: I can copy you, I think?

JAMIE: Oh well, here it goes.

(Jamie starts dancing, hopping between his feet as his arms switch between being pointed up in the in the air and the other with his hand on his hip. The Princess quickly picks this up and copies him, as the two dance back and forth. Picking up on the beat, the cheerleaders begin to clap in time.)

CHEER CAPTAIN: Say, that's very good! What do you call it?

JAMIE: The Highland Fling!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Why do you call it the Highland Fling?

JAMIE: Because we finish the dance by…flinging ourselves out the door.

PRINCESS: What?!

(Jamie grabs the Princess and dives through the nearby door, escaping the hall. The cheerleaders think it's all part of the dance though and applaud, cheer and laugh.)

CHEER CAPTAIN: Oh, that's very good! Come on now. (Singing) Rah, rah, rah!

CHEERLEADERS: (Singing) Rah, rah, rah!

CHEER CAPTAIN: Cheers for the Colony. Rah, rah, rah…

(The Princess and Jamie back up into the hall, as Ola and his guards enter after them.)

OLA: Where did these two come from?

CHEER CAPTAIN: Oh, they're the new dancers.

OLA: Nonsense. They're the escaped strangers.

PRINCESS: No we're not.

OLA: Yes you are!

PRINCESS: No we're not. The Princess wears a top hat, and as you can see, I'm not wearing a top hat, ergo I'm not the Princess.

JAMIE: Ay, we be the new dancers, see.

(Ola glares at them both. Then…)

OLA: You there, identify these two. Are they the ones you reported?

(The cheerleaders part, revealing Ben stood in their midst, looking conflicted.)

PRINCESS: Oh, hello there, Ben!

(The Princess is about to go to Ben.)

OLA: Stay where you are! (To Ben) Well?

(Ben is struggling to speak.)

PRINCESS: That's it, Ben. You can do it. We're your friends, remember.

BEN: My…

OLA: Are these the strangers or not?!

BEN: (Struggling) Yes.

JAMIE: Ben, you traitorous dog, I'll–!

PRINCESS: Stop it, Jamie!

(The guards quickly close in, restraining both the Princess and Jamie.)

OLA: Come along, we're going to see the Pilot. And soon your friends will join us.

(Ola leads the way out, with the guards bringing Jamie and the Princess behind him. But as she's dragged out, the Princess looks back at Ben.)

PRINCESS: It's all right, Ben. We know it's not your fault. Just keep fighting it! You can break free, we believe in you! You're our friend!

(The doors swing shut behind them. But as they briefly open again, the Princess catches a glimpse of a guilt-ridden Ben trying to understand, before they then close again.)

(Later, in the Pilot's office, the Princess and Jamie are sat in chairs with Ola stood before them and the Pilot at his desk.)

OLA: (To Princess & Jamie) Look at me when I talk to you.

PRINCESS: Did you hear something, Jamie?

JAMIE: Ay, sounded like the wind.

OLA: Why you–!

PILOT: Ola, a word with you. Where exactly did you catch these strangers?

PRINCESS: Pilot, I thought we were friends, or at the very least acquaintances. After all, we can't be strangers when you know our names.

OLA: Silence!

PILOT: That's enough, Ola. Now, where did you find the Princess and her friend?

PRINCESS: His names, Jamie, Pilot. But don't worry, we know you have a lot of names to remember.

OLA: In here, in the hall, Pilot.

PILOT: I see. So, in fact, they gave themselves up?

PRINCESS: That's exactly what we did!

OLA: No, they were captured!

PRINCESS: Really, Ola, do you expect the Pilot to believe we just threw ourselves into you by mistake. Of course we were trying to give ourselves up. Right, Jamie?

JAMIE: Eh, ay.

OLA: (To Pilot) They should never have been allowed to escape in the first place.

PILOT: Are you criticising Control?

OLA: I'm criticising the running of the pits.

PILOT: But that is my job, Ola.

OLA: I know that. But were it not for my guards, these strangers would still be a danger to all of us.

PRINCESS: No we wouldn't, because we gave ourselves up, Ola, remember?

(Ola growls angrily.)

PRINCESS: Besides, we're as dangerous as a butterfly. We only want to help this Colony.

OLA: I can't stand to hear any more of this. I am going to report to Control that there is no discipline in the pits.

PILOT: (Stands up) That's not the only report Control will get–!

OLA: Ever since these strangers arrived, your authority in this Colony has gone to pieces! They come and go as they please, and even now two of them are still missing.

PRINCESS: No they're not.

OLA: Then where are they?

PRINCESS: (Pointing) Right there.

(The Doctor and Polly are stood in the doorway to the Pilot's office.)

DOCTOR: Good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Well, everyone is up bright and early. And the last two strangers are not missing after all. Ah, Princess, I found this in your room on our way here.

(The Doctor holds out the Princess' top hat.)

PRINCESS: Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!

(The Princess excitedly takes her top hat from the Doctor and puts it back on her head.)

PRINCESS: (Sighing) Ah, that's better.

(The Pilot and Ola continue to glare at one another.)

DOCTOR: Do I sense a bit of tension?

PRINCESS: Ola and the Pilot are just having a little disagreement. (Stage whisper) It got pretty loud.

DOCTOR: Oh, come now. We can't have bad temper and differences of opinion in this happy tight Colony. Say you're sorry, Ola. Say you're sorry, Pilot.

JAMIE: Doctor, what did ye come here for? You've walked into a trap!

DOCTOR: Good morning, Jamie. It's nice to see you so well cared for.

JAMIE: Yes, but Doctor–

DOCTOR: Oh, it's all right. I've just come in to have a word with my old friend, the Pilot.

(The Doctor turns to see Ben now in the doorway to the Pilot's office, looking ashamed.)

DOCTOR: Good morning, Ben. I hope you're feeling more your old self?

BEN: Yes, Doctor, I am.

PRINCESS: Oh, good, we're glad to have you back, come here!

(The Princess gives Ben a hug, which surprises him.)

PRINCESS: (To Ben, whisper) Don't worry, it's all right now.

(The Princess lets go of Ben and winks at him. He smiles a little sheepishly.)

PILOT: (To Ola) Why didn't your guards arrest these strangers?

OLA: I don't know. Guards, arrest them!

PILOT: That is no longer necessary!

PRINCESS: That's right, they've given themselves up. Just like me and Jamie did. Isn't that right, Ben? You saw.

BEN: Y…Yes.

PRINCESS: (Quietly) Well done.

DOCTOR: And you can't arrest us now we've given ourselves up. That's against the rules.

(Ola bares his teeth angrily but does nothing.)

PILOT: (To Doctor) Now. You wish to see me?

DOCTOR: Yes I do, urgently. Come with me.

PILOT: Very well.

(But before they can move, the huge screen turns on revealing the face of Control.)

CONTROL: (From speaker) This is Control. Everyone is to return to work immediately. This order includes all executives. It includes the Pilot. Everyone back to work immediately.

PILOT: Well, I shall have to go.

POLLY: No, wait. You must listen to what the Doctor's got to tell you. They're only saying that because they know what we've seen.

CONTROL: At once!

DOCTOR: Pilot–

CONTROL: At once! That is an order!

POLLY: Don't take any notice of them. That's not your Controller. Those are your enemies!

CONTROL: There must be no discussion with the strangers!

POLLY: Why not?

JAMIE: Ay, what are you afraid of?

CONTROL: Arrest the strangers! That is an order! All the strangers!

BEN: That doesn't sound like a man in control.

PRINCESS: No, it certainly doesn't.

(The Pilot contemplates this for a moment, before turning to the Doctor.)

PILOT: What did you wish to tell me?

OLA: Pilot, you heard Control. Guards, take them all away.

PILOT: I am still the Pilot here. You will take your orders from me. Get back to your quarters.

OLA: Contact Control immediately. Report the Pilot!

(Ola and his guards storm out the room.)

DOCTOR: That was a very brave thing to do.

PILOT: Or very foolish.

PRINCESS: You'd be surprised how often they crossover.

PILOT: What is it you wanted to tell me?

DOCTOR: Come with me. You too, Princess.

SECRETERY: Pilot, you can't–!

PILOT: The rest of you will remain here.

(The Doctor leads the Pilot and Princess out of the office.)

(A short while later, the Doctor leads the Pilot and Princess into the grim looking control room for the mines. He then takes them across the room to what appears to be a storage cupboard door. The Doctor opens the door and steps through.)

PILOT: But, Doctor, that is forbidden territory.

DOCTOR: Yes, and you'll soon see why.

PILOT: Stop. Stop! You're breaking the law!

DOCTOR: Bad laws were made to be broken. Follow me.

PILOT: But–

PRINCESS: Come on.

(The Princess pulls the Pilot inside. But rather than entering a storage cupboard, they enter a long metal tunnel with pipes running along the walls.)

PRINCESS: Oh, this is interesting.

DOCTOR: Yes, it is. But the really interesting thing is down here.

(The Doctor heads down the tunnel, with the Princess and Pilot following him.)

PILOT: I really don't know why I trust you, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Oh, perhaps I've got an honest face.

PRINCESS: You do.

DOCTOR: Why thank you. Yours isn't too bad either.

PRINCESS: Aw!

CONTROL: (Distant) The Pilot is to be arrested! This is a happy Colony! All must obey!

PILOT: Did you hear that?

DOCTOR: Don't give up now. It's just up here.

(They reach the end of the tunnel. On the wall is porthole like window, looking into a large room. The Princess and Pilot step forward for a look, at which point they are both shocked to see the room is filled with Macra – the largest of which is stood by a large control console with a picture of Control on the screen. And as the largest Macra works the console, Control speaks.)

CONTROL: All guards to report to the pit head. They are to take orders from Ola. Is this understood?

DOCTOR: There you are. That's what's taken over this Colony. You haven't been in touch with Control, but with these.

PRINCESS: The Macra.

DOCTOR: They've used this Colony for their own ends, destroying you to live themselves.

(Finally realising the truth, the Pilot sinks to floor.)

PILOT: How horrible… No, Doctor. It is they who must be destroyed. We must kill them!

(Suddenly a Macra appears at the porthole window, making the Princess jump back.)

CONTROL: They're here!

PRINCESS: No we're not!

CONTROL: The Pilot and the two strangers! In forbidden territory! They must be destroyed!

PILOT: What are they, Doctor? I mean, some monstrous form of bacteria? Insects? Or what?

DOCTOR: I don't know, but you must fight them.

PILOT: How?

DOCTOR: Take full command.

PILOT: You mean defy Control?

PRINCESS: That's Control! Them, the Macra. Control and the Macra are the same thing.

DOCTOR: Yes, if you obey Control, you obey the Macra.

PILOT: Yes. You're right, Doctor. They must be destroyed.

DOCTOR: Good, but before that, we should probably get out of here. They could break through at any moment.

(The Doctor, Princess and Pilot hurry back down the corridor they came from.)

(Returning to the grim control room, the Doctor, Princess and Pilot enter through the storage room door, only to be instantly surrounded by Ola and his guards.)

OLA: We've been waiting for you.

PILOT: Ola, the Colony is in the hands of grotesque insects!

OLA: (Chuckling) So you've been seeing things?

PILOT: (Pointing to storage room) They're in there! The Macra!

OLA: You know what happens to people that say that.

PILOT: But I–

OLA: Now we can deal with you all together.

(Ola signals his guards and Polly and Jamie are brought in.)

POLLY: Did the Pilot see them?

PILOT: Yes, I saw the Macra!

(The huge screen in the room is turned on, showing the face of Control as always.)

CONTROL: (From speaker) It is forbidden to say that. Don't let him say that he has seen Macra.

PILOT: I saw you! You are the Macra!

CONTROL: Silence! Silence the four strangers! That is an order!

OLA: What shall we do with them, Control?

CONTROL: Return them to the storage room. The four strangers and the Pilot. They are to be locked in, and you will not let them out.

OLA: Come on, get in!

PILOT: Ola. Ola–

(Ola shoves the Pilot back towards the storage room, as his guards do the same with the Doctor, Princess, Polly and Jamie.)

OLA: Come on, you heard Control. Get in!

PILOT: You'll suffer for this. You wait and see.

(Ola shoves the Pilot through the storage room door, before stepping side as the Doctor and Princess are shoved through.)

POLLY: But, Doctor, the Macra.

JAMIE: Don't worry Polly, I'll look after you.

(One of the guards grabs Polly as she tries to get past him.)

POLLY: No!

JAMIE: Take your hands off her!

OLA: Get in!

(The guards shoves Polly and Jamie in as the Pilot and Princess try to leave, resulting in all four of them toppling back through the door. Before they have a chance to do anything, one of the guards pulls the door shut and locks it.)

POLLY: No, we're trapped.

DOCTOR: No, we can head down…

(The tunnel is sealed off by a metal door, trapping the time travellers and the Pilot in a small space.)

DOCTOR: Ah.

JAMIE: We're trapped!

PRINCESS: Quiet a moment, Jamie.

(The Princess has taken off her top hat and has put the rim of it against the door, with her ear pressed against the flat top.)

CONTROL: (From behind door) You have done well, Ola.

OLA: (From behind door) What instructions, Control?

CONTROL: Clear the building. Guards and workers are to return to the hall for music.

OLA: I obey, Control.

CONTROL: It will take precisely four minutes, and then it will be safe for everyone to return to work. Four minutes.

PRINCESS: Why four minutes?

POLLY: What can they do in four minutes, Doctor?

DOCTOR: I don't know. We must be ready for anything.

(Suddenly, the room begins to fill with the toxic green gas.)

JAMIE: It's the gas! It's coming in here!

PRINCESS: Oh, not this again!

(They all begin coughing due to the gas.)

DOCTOR: Pilot, do you know where it's coming from?

PILOT: Why, no, I've never been here before!

DOCTOR: There must be a hidden inlet.

CONTROL: (From speaker) You will not be able to fight it. You cannot stop it.

POLLY: Doctor…I'm getting dizzy.

DOCTOR: Polly, hold this in front of your mouth.

(The Doctor hands Polly a handkerchief which she uses to cover her nose and mouth.)

JAMIE: It's coming from over here, Doctor!

(Jamie points to a small near missable vent above the door.)

DOCTOR: I think you're right, Jamie.

PILOT: It's coming from here as well!

(The Pilot is pointing to another near missable vent on the opposite wall.)

PRINCESS: All right, but how to we stop it?

CONTROL: You are unable to stop it.

PRINCESS: Oh, be quiet!

(The Princess violently coughs as the Doctor goes to her, patting her back while coughing himself. Jamie and the Pilot are now leaning against the walls, and Polly is at the door banging on it feebly.)

CONTROL: It will not last long. Only for four minutes. By that time, you–

POLLY: Let us out… Let us out!

CONTROL: (Continuing) Will be completely helpless. Not quite dead, but helpless.

(Suddenly, a knock from the other side of the door.)

BEN: (From behind door) Hello in there!

POLLY: Who is it?

PRINCESS: It's…It's, Ben.

BEN: Yeah, it's me, Princess!

DOCTOR: Ben…are you all right?

BEN: Yeah, but you don't sound too good. Can you open this door from your side?

DOCTOR: No.

POLLY: Can't you open it?

BEN: It's locked.

JAMIE: Use the key!

BEN: There is no key!

(The time travellers and the Pilot are coughing more violently now, as the gas gets thicker and thicker, the more it pours into the room.)

DOCTOR: Ben, listen…we've got very little time… It's all up to you.

BEN: Go ahead, Doctor, tell me what to do.

DOCTOR: Go to the control desk…and you'll see two switches…one marked outflow and one marked inflow.

BEN: Hang on!

CONTROL: (From behind door) The other stranger has recovered. He is now dangerous. He will no longer obey Control. The fifth stranger is trying to help his friends. He is no longer one of us. He must be stopped at once!

BEN: I've got them, Doc. Two switches. What next?

DOCTOR: Good… You see a lever in front of them?

BEN: Yeah.

CONTROL: It is forbidden to touch that instrument! You must not obey the Doctor! He will kill us all! He intends to create an explosion! Come away from those instruments! You will destroy the Colony!

BEN: Oh, shut up! Okay, Doctor, fire away.

CONTROL: Guards! Stop the strangers!

DOCTOR: Switch on both inflow and outflow.

PRINCESS: Hurry…Ben!

CONTROL: No! Stop! The pressure will be unbearable! For human beings as well!

DOCTOR: Switch them on, Ben. Then stand by to throw the lever.

CONTROL: You are to give no such order!

BEN: Inflow on. Outflow on. Okay, Doc, ready with the lever!

(There's a banging noise, like someone trying to break down a door. But the time travellers and Pilot barely notice, as they are beginning to lose conciseness due to the gas. Polly, Jamie and the Pilot have sunk down to the floor against the door, while the Princess and Doctor fight to stay on their feet.)

BEN: Quickly, Doctor!

DOCTOR: Throw the lever away from you, now!

CONTROL: No! No! Don't let him!

(Then, a huge explosion that rattles the whole Colony from beneath the ground. One with so much force that the locked door bursts off its hinges, as the time travellers and Pilot collapse through the doorway into the control room. They splutter and cough for a moment, before taking in deep breaths of clean air, as the green gas disperses.)

BEN: Are you all all right?!

PRINCESS: Of course… Just practising…the Highland Fling…

(As they all recover, the time travellers and Pilot laugh. Though it's easer for some than others.)

(Later, the time travellers are in the hall from before, along with the entire Colony it seems. A celebration is in full swing, with cheerful music as the colonist clap and cheer. On the edge of the hall however, things are less cheerful, as the Princess sits with Mavis soberly.)

MAVIS: I feel as though I let him down.

PRINCESS: You weren't to know. You were under the same spell as everyone else.

MAVIS: If only I'd listened, then maybe…

PRINCESS: I know. But I think he'd be happy, knowing your free now.

MAVIS: Perhaps. We'll never know.

PRINCESS: What will you do?

MAVIS: Leave perhaps. There's nothing left for me here really. And it's a bit too…cheerful.

PRINCESS: You could come with us if you like?

MAVIS: Thank you, but I want to think about it some more before making a decision.

PRINCESS: That's all right… He loved you, Mavis. I know he did.

MAVIS: And I him. Thank you, for telling me what happened. If you hadn't, I might never have known… Goodbye, Princess.

PRINCESS: Goodbye, Mavis. And… I'm sorry.

(Mavis gets up and leaves, as the Princess watches her go regretfully.)

DOCTOR: It wasn't your fault either, you know.

PRINCESS: But I could have prevented it. I saw it happen! (Sighs) What's the point of these premonitions if they're just going to show me things I can't change.

DOCTOR: I don't know, Princess… I don't suppose…she ever mentioned anything?

PRINCESS: No. And it hasn't happened to anyone else.

DOCTOR: Not that I'm aware of.

(The two sit together for a moment, while around them the cheerful celebrations continue. Then…)

PRINCESS: I think I'm ready to move on.

DOCTOR: What? You mean…go home?

PRINCESS: You wanted to, once.

DOCTOR: Once. But not anymore.

PRINCESS: What changed?

DOCTOR: (Grinning) We did.

(The Princess giggles a little, before going quiet.)

DOCTOR: Is that what you want?

PRINCESS: No... Maybe…

DOCTOR: What changed?

PRINCESS: We did.

(The Doctor chortles this time, before growing quiet.)

DOCTOR: If you want answers, that's where you'll get them.

PRINCESS: But if we return…we'll never be allowed to leave again, will we?

DOCTOR: No.

PRINCESS: We'd probably never see each other again…

DOCTOR: No.

(Silence for a moment, with only the awkward cheering of the colonists to fill the void.)

PRINCESS: When I said I wanted to move on, I meant go somewhere else in the Tardis.

DOCTOR: Ah. Well. Don't I feel silly.

PRINCESS: You are silly.

(The Doctor chortles again as the Princess leans into him.)

PRINCESS: Don't ever change.

DOCTOR: I won't if you won't.

PRINCESS: Can we go now?

DOCTOR: Let the others enjoy themselves for a bit. I think they deserve it, don't you?

PRINCESS: All right.

(For a moment they sit, the Princess leaning her head on the Doctor's shoulder. Then the Doctor takes out his recorder and plays a gently, but still playful, tune. The Princess smiles a little, enjoying the tune. Until Ben comes rushing over.)

BEN: Hey, Doctor?! Princess?!

(The Doctor stops playing his recorder.)

DOCTOR: What is?

PRINCESS: (Sitting up) What's the matter?

BEN: I just heard it down the grapevine. They're going to draft us all as members of the Colony, and make you two the new Pilots.

(The Doctor and Princess jump up to their feet.)

DOCTOR: They can't do that to us!

PRINCESS: We're not meant for that kind of responsibility!

DOCTOR: We've got to get out of here!

PRINCESS: Back to the Tardis!

BEN: Yeah, but how?

DOCTOR: Well, isn't it obvious? Run!

(The Doctor and Princess run towards the nearby door. Ben is quick to follow them, and when Polly and Jamie see what's happening, they race after their friends. All of them fleeing the Colony, as they head towards their next adventure…)
