August 2022 had arrived, bearing the weight of anticipation and uncharted possibilities. I, Arata, your bog-standard eighteen-year-old boy, found myself on the precipice of a new adventure.
The allure of the Sword Art Online beta test had beckoned me, and just last month, I had eagerly enrolled myself in the waitlist, hoping to give this full-dive thing a try.
In the confines of my room, lying upon my bed, I prepared myself for the grand expedition that awaited NerveGear, a gateway to uncharted realms, clasped firmly to my head, its calibration complete. It was a surreal moment, one where the tangible boundaries of reality blurred with the intangible fabric of virtual existence.
As sunlight danced through the lattice of my window, casting ethereal beams that kissed the strands of my silver hair, I marveled at the beauty of the world outside. The golden rays, akin to celestial fingers, painted a masterpiece upon my smile, infusing me with a glimmer of hope.
Something about the beautiful sunrise put me in a strange mood as I pondered the enigmatic nature of my emotions. I hung out with my buddies a lot, and things are going well for me school-wise, even money-wise, but for whatever reason I feel a bit melancholic.
The days blend together into a monotonous stream of gray—every day no different from the last—and a part of me secretly yearns for something to shake things up. I wouldn't exactly call my life "uneventful", but I need something more. I just don't know what that something more is. I guess you could say I've just been waiting for life to happen to me.
With a mixture of trepidation and anticipation, I prepared myself to log into the SAO Beta Test, aware of its potential to offer me a temporary respite from the dull tedium of reality.
In the end it was just escapism, I knew that. But oh well…
"Link Start!"
A kaleidoscope of colors burst forth, flooding my vision with a vibrant symphony of hues, each one a testament to the verification of my senses.
As the world around me came into focus, the immersive wonder of full-dive virtual reality unfurled before my eyes. It was a sensory revelation, a canvas upon which my imagination would be woven. No longer bound by the limitations of my physical form, I found myself immersed within a boundless expanse of digital grandeur.
The ambient hues enveloped me, a deep and mysterious shade of blue that emanated a sense of profound tranquility. It was the backdrop against which the user interface, buttons and text fields, floating effortlessly in the air, came to life.
They danced and shimmered like ethereal apparitions, their presence palpable, as if extending an intangible hand to guide me through this virtual realm—a character customization screen unlike anything I'd ever seen.
Curiosity arose within me as I tentatively reached out to touch the windows, my fingertips brushing against their surface. Smooth… like glass, they felt cool to the touch. It was a sensation that defied logic, blurring the boundaries between the digital and the corporeal. The juxtaposition of their icy coldness against the warmth of my hand symbolized the ambivalent ingenuity that had birthed this virtual world.
Driven by an eagerness to embark on this new adventure, I found myself hastily selecting the option to simulate my real-life appearance, opting to retain my given name, Arata. After all, with the amount of people in Japan with the name Arata, it'd be sweet to snag the username early.
With a blink of the digital abyss, I materialized in the Central Plaza of the Town of Beginnings, basking in the radiance of a virtual sun that bathed the landscape in a warm golden embrace.
A gentle zephyr danced through the air, teasing strands of silver that adorned my head, as if whispering secrets only the wind could comprehend. The breeze whispered of untold adventures and hidden treasures, carrying with it the promise of boundless exploration. With each gust, my hair came alive. I was wowed, my expectations blown out of the water.
Beneath my feet, the stone-path ground of the circular central plaza beckoned with a tactile allure, begging to be explored. I lowered my gaze and allowed my fingers to trace the intricate patterns etched into the weathered surface. The stone, cool against my touch, bore the imprints of countless footsteps, each one a testament to the passage of time and the stories that unfolded upon this hallowed ground. Tiny imperfections revealed themselves upon closer inspection, each flaw adding to the authenticity of the experience.
A figure emerged from the bustling crowd. Her dark-brown hair cascaded gracefully down her shoulders, each strand swaying in harmony with her purposeful footsteps. The faint echo of her approach reached my ears, a symphony of sound that melded with the symphony of the virtual world.
With an air of confidence, the AI NPC closed the distance between us, her presence commanding attention. She greeted me with a warm smile, her voice a melodic cadence that resonated in the air.
"Welcome to Sword Art Online," she said, her words carrying the weight of both invitation and caution.
"It is here that your journey begins."
Her speech, though seemingly routine, was laced with the promise of adventure and the gravity of the challenges that lay ahead. She outlined the basic tenets of the game. Among her directions, she guided me to the weapon shop.
Eager to explore the town's vibrant, I set forth on my journey, my senses attuned to the captivating details that surrounded me. As I walked the bustling streets, every step was an invitation to admire my surroundings. The cozy yet advanced wooden architecture of the buildings rose majestically.
The sun, a radiant orb of celestial power, illuminated the town with a brilliance that defied description as the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air, enticing passing players with promises of virtual culinary delight.
The bustling marketplace hummed with the energy of commerce, as merchants adorned their stalls with a kaleidoscope of wares, each item a treasure waiting to be discovered. My gaze wandered, captivated by the myriad of sights—the glint of finely crafted armor, the vibrant plumage of feathered quills, the ornate trinkets that caught the sunlight and shimmered with otherworldly allure.
As I neared the weapon shop, the atmosphere shifted. The air buzzed with anticipation, for within these walls, dreams of valor and heroism took shape. Stepping inside, my eyes beheld a vast array of different starter weapons.
Gleaming swords, their blades honed to perfection, beckoned with the promise of swift strikes and lethal precision. Hammers, their weight promising earth-shattering power, stood tall, ready to sunder the mightiest of foes.
Scythes, their crescent blades glinting ominously, whispered of the dance of life and death.
Bows, their intricate craftsmanship a testament to grace and finesse, yearned to send arrows soaring through the virtual skies.
Spears, their tips honed to a deadly point, stood as stalwart guardians of honor and duty.
Shields, bearing the marks of battles fought and victories won, stood resolute, providing a steadfast defense against the tides of darkness.
And that wasn't all. I could go on and on about the different kinds of weapons one could choose.
Amidst the symphony of weaponry, I marveled at the diverse array of choices, each one a reflection of a different class and playstyle. For a game called Sword Art Online, I was astonished to see just how many non-sword weapons you could use.
As I embarked upon this new chapter of my journey, I knew that the weapon I chose would be more than just a tool of war. It would become an extension of my will, a conduit through which my determination and valor would be forged, or something like that.
As I surveyed the bustling crowd of fellow beta testers in the shop, I couldn't help but notice the majority of them swiftly making their choice of weapon and proceeding with their purchases. Practicality guided their decisions, at least in terms of choosing one weapon and sticking with it. After all, none of us actually knew whether the inventory space would be limited or not.
Yet, in the depths of my adventurous spirit, a whisper of curiosity beckoned me towards a different path. The beta test offered a rare opportunity, a fleeting moment where consequences were less dire, and experimentation reigned supreme. It was a chance to explore the artistry of each weapon, to dance with their distinctive rhythms and uncover the hidden potential that lay within.
With a wry smile tugging at the corners of my lips, I succumbed to the allure of my whims and indulged in the prospect of acquiring one of each weapon. It was a decision made not out of necessity, but out of an insatiable hunger for knowledge and the sheer joy of exploration.
I approached the counter with a sense of anticipation, the weight of the weapons resting upon my virtual being. Each acquisition carried its own tale of promise, a journey waiting to unfold. From the elegant grace of a slender sword to the formidable heft of a mighty hammer, I embraced them all, eager to delve into their nuances and uncover the secrets they held.
Through countless battles against the varied denizens of the first floor's dungeon, I found myself gradually unlocking the intricacies of Sword Art Online's unique combat system. Attempting to put into words the essence of activating skills proved a challenging task, for it transcended the realm of physical movements, rooted instead in an intuitive "feeling."
Despite sword skills being the primary component of combat in SAO, it became clear that they weren't the only path you'd need to navigate when it came to improving. With coordination and finesse, anyone could wield their weapons with precision, executing strikes even without the aid of skill activations.
In the dungeon, my adversaries took on various forms. Kobold Sentinels, their hulking frames adorned with crude armor, brandished barbaric hand axes with menacing intent. Despite their primitive appearance, their skills in combat were formidable, requiring me to carefully study their movements and exploit any weaknesses I could discern.
These humanoid creatures, bearing large tails and rabbit-like ears, were a constant reminder of the diverse range of opponents I would encounter on my journey.
As I honed my skills and expanded my arsenal, the intricacies and nuances of each weapon type became apparent. Two-handed swords, grand and imposing, offered a path of brute force with sweeping arcs excellent for cleaving through enemies with high defense and low agility.
One-handed swords, like falchions and rapiers, provided a delicate balance between offense and defense. Their slender forms accentuated finesse and precision, enabling quick strikes and agile footwork and offering opportunities to exploit enemy weaknesses with swift, calculated movements.
Spears could use their spacing and range to bypass the dangers many enemy attack patterns posed, while hammers could annihilate enemies with huge resounding blows granted you could time your swings correctly. Even then, that was merely a fraction of the weapon types available in this game.
Through countless trials and tribulations, I learned to adapt my arsenal to suit the ever-changing demands of battle. Each weapon possessed its own strengths and weaknesses, and it was through embracing their intricacies that I found a path towards mastery.
With each strike, each parry, and each skill activation, I delved deeper into the artistry of combat, weaving my own story amidst the perilous corridors of Sword Art Online's immersive reality.
I began to embrace a gameplay style that involved constant weapon switching, I found myself immersed in a dynamic dance of adaptability and strategy. Navigating through the labyrinth of dropdowns that comprised the inventory menu, however, gnawed at my patience.
Seriously, who designed this convoluted system? It was like trying to find a needle in a haystack, except the haystack was a haystack of dropdown menus. If this were your typical MMO, I'd have whipped up a damn macro by now to streamline this mess. Sword Art Online had to be different, as if it had a grudge against players like me who dared to switch weapons on the fly.
But I knew it wasn't impossible.
Sure, I couldn't help but notice that none of the "pro" players were trying to pull off this crazy weapon-switching madness. Maybe I was onto something, or maybe I was just barking up the wrong tree. Who knew?
But hey, I had to give it to myself. Switching weapons based on the enemy's phases and attack patterns could turn an otherwise nightmarish fight into a cake walk. It was like having a secret weapon up my sleeve, and damn it, I was gonna make the most of it.
Now, don't get me wrong. This playstyle wasn't for the faint of heart. It demanded some serious clairvoyance and a knack for reading monsters' minds. Well, not literally, but you get my drift.
Facing a new monster for the first time was a game of constant analysis and situational awareness. I had no clue what they were gonna throw at me. But with each subsequent attack, I would piece together their moves, figuring out their sneaky tricks and predicting their next move like a seasoned pro.
In the end, it all came down to personal preference and your specific skill set. Most players were probably better off mastering a single weapon, getting cozy with all its tricks and combos. And I couldn't blame 'em. There was something elegant about specializing, becoming a master of one craft. But me? I craved the rush of adapting on the fly, like a living multi-tool, a living switchblade.
So there I was, juggling my weapons like a circus performer on a sugar rush, embracing the chaos and unpredictability that came with it. It was a path less traveled, a road that demanded grit and guts. But I was up for the challenge, ready to prove that my unconventional approach could carve its own damn legend in this game. And with each swing, each weapon switch, I reveled in the freedom of choice, the boundless possibilities that this virtual realm had to offer.
As the passage of time carried me further along the winding journey, I ventured forth, ascending the lofty heights of the tower that stood as a testament to both triumph and tribulation. Now, let me tell you a little secret—I'm not exactly a prodigy when it comes to these types of games. You know, the ones that demand lightning-fast reflexes and split-second decision-making. Nope, that's not my cup of tea.
In those aspects, I'm probably worse off than the average player. I'm no prodigal hero of the gaming world, and if Sword Art Online were a story, I sure wouldn't be its protagonist.
But still, at the very least I've found a playstyle that works for me—a rhythm that dances to the beat of my own strengths and weaknesses. I could lean on my unique ability for situational analysis and that uncanny sense of precognition. And let me tell you, that gave me a solid edge over most of the casual players out there. Sure, I was essentially a casual player myself, but I had my own bag of tricks up my sleeve. My playstyle became my secret weapon, a way to level the playing field and turn the tides in my favor, and I took solace in that fact.
Still, some of these real top players are on a whole different level, light-years ahead of the rest of us mere mortals. It's mind-blowing to witness their mastery of the game. But hey, I haven't had the chance to witness their greatness first-hand since this beta test is a solo show for most of us, and it feels like we're all just lost souls wandering in this virtual abyss.
Not to mention, while this beta test is going on, the bosses respawn right after you beat them. It's a clever move by the devs, ensuring that everyone gets a shot at testing those boss fights and grabbing the sweet loot they drop. No waiting around or having to scramble for that final hit. It's a fair playing field, at least for now. So, forming organized groups seems kinda pointless at this stage.
But damn, wouldn't it be something to witness those top players in action? I'm talking about the legends who've conquered floors that us casuals haven't even dreamed of reaching yet. I wonder how many floors they've already climbed. It's like they're ascending the stairway to heaven while the rest of us are still fumbling around on the ground floor.
But you know what? Screw that. I'm not gonna sit here wallowing in my own inadequacy. It's time to roll up my sleeves, buckle down, and get on that grind. If I wanna catch up to those pros, I gotta level up, hone my skills, and conquer each floor with every ounce of conviction I've got.
So watch out, top players, 'cause I'm coming for ya. I'll make my mark and climb those floors myself. It's gonna take some serious dedication and countless sleepless nights, but hey, that's a small price to pay. And mark my words, I won't rest until I stand shoulder to shoulder with those legends.
Let the grind begin!
