Deathly Fate
Chapter 9 – The World Cup
"Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I'll show you someone who has overcome adversity."
Most days at Potter Manor found Harry sitting in the Lord's study reading through tomes and books. When he was not reading, he would practice and training in the training room at the manor.
He had covered a lot of texts. He was well ahead of the fourth and even the fifth-year syllabus at Hogwarts. Beyond that he had taken to reading almost every book on spells used in duels and battles at his disposal. He practiced as hard as he could.
Being well fed at the Potter manor was also doing him quite good. Now he was no longer lanky and skinny but putting on some weight and muscle from all the training.
Past few weeks had been exhausting, besides practicing the Potter and Black family magic, which was a slow and arduous process, Harry was also trying to master Parselmagic through the Slytherin grimoire and books from the Slytherin vault at Gringotts.
He studied the Potter grimoire under his grandfather's guidance and for learning the Black family magic he had help of Sirius and Arcturus. He soon found that there was much to learn in the grimoires and to master the family spells would take a lot of practice on his part. Usually, young heirs of families would spend their childhood and teenage acquainting themselves with the family magic. Only after attaining maturity at the age of seventeen would, they start delving into the more esoteric natures of the family magics and practicing most of the spells. This was done as may spells in the grimoires were dangerous and could cause quite the havoc if used incorrectly. But Harry didn't have the luxury of studying the family magic at a slow place as he grew older. He was on a speed run, being put into paces by Charlus, Arcturus and Ignotus to do his best.
Learning family magic was a very intimate process. One had to accept the magics flowing in their vein and allow them to guide you. There were no spells, just intent and the effect.
Harry had also take to practicing the Mind Arts. Arcturus had guided him much on those through letters and the mirror he and Sirius used to communicate. He was still mastering the basics and the process was slow, but the results were evident.
Arcturus had evaluated Harry for his inherent ability in Mind Arts on one of Harry's occasional trips to the Grimmauld Place. He had deemed Harry to be gifted in his ability to learn the arts and put him in paces to do the same. What had followed were hours of meditating sessions where Harry had to organizes his mind. To start treating each of his thoughts as a bit of information to be dealt with delicately.
Harry had spent hours meticulously arranging his mind. After much efforts he was done, but what followed was even more difficult. Arranging your thoughts was one thing but shielding them was a totally different business. This was the part where Arcturus could no longer help him, but something he had to figure out himself. He had to venture deep in his mind and build his shields, his defences. The process took a lot of efforts and was exhausting but Harry was progressing slowly.
Sirius had been much pleased with Harry's advances in mind arts. He had proudly told him that Harry might be one of the youngest to pull it off. Sirius himself had to wait till reaching the age of 19 years before he could successfully start building the shields.
Harry believed that his hard work, the enormous amount of books on mind arts in the Potter and Black libraries and the occasional helpful pointers form Ignotus had helped him a lot, and he was grateful.
His mind was organized, and the effects were clear as crystal. His ability to recall and memorize stuff was greatly increased. He could think and organize his thought into plans much quickly.
Ignotus had also advanced his training in the Peverell magic. At present they were focusing on mastering the theoretical aspects of magic itself. Ignotus believed that Harry having a solid foundation of magic was much necessary for him to be able to master the Peverell magics. Ignotus also helped Harry better his transfiguration and charms work. Much time was spent on Harry perfecting his transfiguration and charms technique. Ignotus had explained to Harry that mastering these basic fields of magic would help him greatly master the Peverell magic.
Hence Harry was now in the training room. The task he was set upon was to practice the elemental transformations of water.
As Ignotus had explained water was one of the easiest substances to conjure. The spell Augamenti conjured a clean jet of water. Harry had quickly mastered it. Ignotus had got Harry to work on his control of the charm.
One day Harry had casted the charm in full force, to try and see what would happen.
It was not a clever idea and had caused the training room to be flood, Harry swept to a side and a very irritated Minnie who had to clean it all down.
Harry had practiced the spell thoroughly, learned to control it to almost perfection since that day. Now he was able to cast the spell at a nary thought and silently too.
This was something new he was learning. With his advances in occlumency, Charlus and Ignotus had edged Harry to cast any spell he used silently. They had explained that this was another benefit of the mind art.
It was definitely not easy. At first, he had got no results, his reflexes to cast verbally making it difficult for him to wrap his mind around the concept of non-verbal casting. Non-verbal casting was definitely not a joke, it offered one much advantage and was not taught in Hogwarts till the sixth year. Even then most could only use it for some basic spells and there were a few who could never master it.
But Occlumency had definitely smoothened the path to non-verbal casting for Harry. After much efforts and frustration, he was able to do most of the basic spells silently and was working on the advanced ones.
The more he practiced, the better his control and mastery over the spells got.
Presently he was able to conjure a single drop of water silently and swiftly and control it too. He could transform the conjured drop to ice or steam with just a thought, his intent strong and his magic focused. It had took him 5 days of continuous practice to get at this stage.
After successfully completing his task, he went back to the Book and reported his advancement to Ignotus.
'You have almost perfected water conjuration Harry. Now I want you to learn something more. You with your magic can transform the conjuration into whatever you want. All you have to do is focus your intent and use your conjured water as an extension of yourself for it to obey your command. Try it with all the three states of water. For example, you can make a constant stream of hot steam that can coil around you enemies, or conjure a hand of water to grab something, or use ice to create weapons and control them. The possibilities are endless. Be creative with your work and you will not be disappointed. Remember it is of utmost importance that your entire intent is focused on the conjurations or else they will fail. Elemental conjuration is an important part of the Peverell magic. Once you master water, you can move on to fire and then lightning. Using and bending nature to your will, will be of great use to you. You can transform entire battlegrounds with just a sweep of your wand once you master this art. I also urge you to look up the libraries and grimoires and find more about elemental conjuration, I am sure you will find many helpful things in it.' Ignotus wrote back.
Harry read the message and went back to stand in the centre of the room. He thought about what he could do with his conjurations. Ignotus had told him to be creative. He wanted to think of something that could help him in a battle.
Suddenly an idea struck him. He held out his wand and focused.
Chunks of ice began to form in the air. They hovered in front of him.
In a swish of his wand, he made them come together and form a spiralling vortex. The chunks of ice started to spin in a vortex like a tornado. As he focused more, beads of sweat dripping from his forehead, the vortex began gaining a more definite shape and the speed with which it rotated started to increase.
Harry was in awe at his creation. The ice vortex would be deadly, destroying anything in its path.
But the moment of awe cost him. In his wonder at the vortex, Harry lost his focus on his magic, and with a thundering sound the vortex dispelled. Chunks of ice, no boulders of ices were flying around everywhere in the room.
Harry immediately ducked flat to the ground in attempt to save himself.
The chunks flew everywhere, making loud sounds as they smashed into the hard stone walls.
After all the smashing was done, the room laid devasted. Tables and chairs were smashed. There was ice everywhere slowly melting into water.
Harry laid on the ground, his face towards it, his back covered in a small layer of ice. Thankfully, he escaped unscathed. Slowly he got up and brushed himself clean.
As he looked around at the destruction, he had caused he was left spellbound. Literal steam was rising from the ice chunks that were left. The energy of the vortex so high, that on dissipation it converted ice to steam directly.
Harry was breathing heavily. As he caught up his breath, he released a laugh, something even he had not anticipated. It was better than he had expected, but it would not do being unprepared like he was now.
Slowly as the situation sunk in, he realized just how dangerous and powerful what he just did was. It would be lethal for anyone that came in its path. He decided to be more careful the next time, it wouldn't do form him or someone he cared for to be injured because of his own stupidity.
But the idea was definitely good, and he was already imagining scenarios in which he could put it to use.
Sighing he began to clean up the room. He knew he had much to work on his control.
[Break]
The day had arrived. Today Harry would be heading to the Weasleys and then accompany them to the Quidditch World Cup.
Early morning Harry got up and got ready for the day. He wore some of the better fitting clothes he had shopped for in the Diagon Alley.
He had thought about what he would say to the Weasleys. He had already decided to keep most of is findings to himself. He could not just give away all the information he had just got.
He had decided the best way to keep the questions minimum was to tell a bit of truth. He had already mentioned to Dumbledore in the letter he had sent that he was staying at Potter Manor and no more. He decided to do the same and tell the Weasleys the same. Hiding his place of leaving for much of the vacation would get him being asked even more questions.
He had also decided that he would use Minnie to apparate into the Burrow and get back, this would keep more questions at the bay.
He knew he would be fired with questions as soon as he arrived at the Burrow, especially from Mrs Weasley and Hermione who was also attending the world cup with them. And he tried to be prepared for it. He would not be walked over or told what was better for him. Staying in presence of his grandparents, well at least their portraits had taught him much of what caring for him meant. Sure, he liked Mrs Weasley, but she could be rather overbearing on her children, and he was not one of them. And when it came to Hermione, well the girl needed to learn to chill down. Deciding to deal with the situations as they presented, Harry readied himself. He was excited to go to the cup, afterall this was first such experience in his entire life.
He called Minnie and asked her to apparate him outside the Burrow gates.
[Break]
Harry appeared outside the gates of the Burrow. After asking Minnie to return in his calling, he opened the gates and walked in.
The Burrow was just like he remembered from his stay hear at the end of the second year.
Their was early morning commotion in the house. The Weasleys were probably rushing, getting ready to head to the world cup. He could hear Mrs Weasley shouting at Ron over something.
He walked to the door and knocked over it.
Soon the door was opened by Mrs Weasley, who exclaimed at seeing him. She quickly crushed him in an overbearing hug making it very difficult for him to breath. After letting him go and making sure he was not hurt. She spoke.
"Harry! Where have you been young man? You did not reply to our and Ron's letters? We were so worried for you. All we got to know was from Dumbledore and he assured us you were safe. Now you better start answering my questions young man?" Molly bellowed hurriedly seeing him.
Harry was about to say something, but Mr Weasley beat him to it.
"Molly, the boy just arrived. Give him some time to at least catch his breath. We can talk over the dining table." Saying so he took Harry into the dining table.
Molly followed grumbling about irresponsible boys making her worry and what not.
At the dining table Harry got a redo of his latest experience. This time it was Hermione.
She all but crushed him in a hug and after leaving him after much efforts to get away from Harry, she started her rant.
It was much the same of where he was, how he could be so irresponsible, why he did not reply to their letters, in all but one breath.
Harry was at loss of words. He could see the twins wink at him from one side of the table, and Ron, well he was confused between asking after Harry and focusing on his breakfast. Ginny was her usual self, still a bit shy around him. Harry waved at the twins as he took a seat at the table and making himself comfortable spoke knowing what he would say would definitely get a reaction.
"Mrs Weasley, Hermione, as Professor Dumbledore assured you, I am doing quite well and in no danger. As for where I was for most of the vacation, well I was staying at Potter Manor, my home."
"What? You were living in a Manor! Why didn't you tell us?" It was Ron who almost yelled, half a bacon falling from his mouth. Harry could see a hint of jealously in his eye. Since starting to learn the mind arts, Harry was getting better at reading people.
Before Harry could reply it was Mrs Weasley who spoke.
"Harry what were you doing there? You must have been alone. You should not stay there, who knows if the place is safe for you. There could be dark artifacts there, from the times of last war. I know its you family home, but you should have not went there alone. You must first get checked from Professor Dumbledore to make sure its safe and even then, you have no need to stay there alone, you can stay here with all of us."
Hermione soon followed.
"Harry, you never told us you had a manor, and where is it. By the way why do you have a manor? And yes, I agree with Mrs Weasley you should have been more responsible about it, what if something dangerous was present there?"
Now Harry was getting too irritated, he could understand them being worried about him, but this was paranoia. Slowly keeping his rising temper in check, he spoke.
"Yes, Ron I am living at the Potter Manor, my family home as I already told. I found out about it through a letter from Gringotts and decided to stay there instead of at my magic hating relatives. And as for your concerns of it not being safe for my living, it is Potter Manor, what other place can be safer for me to live in. No there are no dark objects over there, the house elves take good care of it and there is no way an object that can harm the Potter family can make it into the Manor. And as for where it is, I cannot tell anyone except a Potter of its location. It is know only to Potter family and there are protections in place to make sure no one except a Potter knows of its location. And as for me having a Manor, it is my family Manor passed down from one Lord to another, and as the last living member of the family and the heir to the family I can access it." Harry said with a tone of finality. He didn't want to reveal that he was already the Lord of his family, so kept it to himself.
"Since when did you get so snobbish, Harry, its almost like Malfoy's talking." Ron said.
"Ron don't be rude and Harry what's all this Lord and Heir business, sure you can't be a Lord or an heir, your parents were afterall just normal people. Your dad was just an Auror, and you mother had a mastery in charms."
"Ron I am not being any snobbish, I am just telling the truth. And Hermione, you are right in that my dad was a Auror and my mom had a mastery in charms, but my dad was also the sole heir of my grandfather Lord Charlus Potter. All Noble and Most Ancient families have a Lord, and a hereditary seat on the Wizengamot, you should read up on it. After my father, I am in line to be the Lord of the Potter family and be the Lord after reaching my magical maturity at age of seventeen." Harry explained now on the loosing point of his temper.
"I still don't understand this Lord business. I so stupid. What use is it anyway? The wizarding world is so backward and old-fashioned. They should learn a thing or two from the muggles." Hermione said with a determined expression on her face.
Harry was about to say something but was interrupted by one of the twins, Harry knew not if it was George or Fred.
"Hermione you should be careful about what you say. Were you saying this in front of some families, you would be in great trouble. Like Harry said you should read up on it before saying anything."
Hermione was about to say something but was interrupted by Mr Weasley, who put the conversation to an end saying they had to hurry up or miss their portkey to the world cup. This quickly made everyone hurry up and head out, the mood of group again jovial in the excitement of the world cup.
[Break]
The group had just settled in the viewing box, waiting for the finale match to begin.
Harry was excited to witness his live professional game of quidditch, he had even bought a pair of omnioculars to get a detailed view. The world cup had greatly amused him so far. It was the first time he was in presence of so many adult magic practicing wizards and that to from various different nations. It was like he was in a different world, almost like a child's fairytale. Magic was used everywhere, there were many families with their children and babies rushing around enjoying the gathering creating a jubilant atmosphere. The tents they were staying in had greatly amused him.
Well, there was definitely some sourness to the pleasant evening he was experiencing. When they had climbed into the viewing box, they came face to face with none other than Draco Malfoy with his father and mother. The cordial conversation that followed cut like ice cold wind in the warm air. But it was not for long, and the Minister soon interrupted, and Harry thought that now the unpleasant business could be put away and they could focus on the game. But it was not so, it seemed the Minister had taken some liking to him, or at least planned to use his name to further his political propaganda and so was trying to butter up to Harry and introduce him to the guests and foreign dignitaries in the box. The politics at play from Fudge definitely did not please Harry, who was tempted to ask Minister about Sirius, but didn't. Well, there was definitely some good in it, watching the Minister make a fool of himself in front of the Bulgarian Minister of magic was definitely entertaining.
The twins had placed a bet with Bagman. They believed that the Irish would win but Krum would catch the snitch. This had caused a lot of debate between the twins and Ron who argued that Victor Krum was the best seeker in the world and there was no way Bulgaria would loose with him. This had led to them arguing quite heatedly.
"Guys, shut up the game is about to begin." Ginny exclaimed as she motioned towards Bagman who announced for the commencement of the game.
First the Irish mascots came out, leprechauns who started showering the stadium wit gold coins. Harry knew that the gold was fake and would disappear in few hours, but decided against stopping Ron who jumped excitedly to collect as much of it as he could.
Next, came out the Bulgarian mascots, and immediately Harry's senses were on high alert. Something was beyond normal about these exceedingly beautiful women, who seemed to have attention of every man in the stadium.
When Harry looked around, he could see Ron almost drooling on the floor. The adult men in the box also had a hard time keeping themselves in control, and if one would observe closely, they would see each of them was trying hard to aver their gazes from the women.
Somehow Harry was not feeling anything. Sure, he noticed that the women were extremely attractive and eye candy for sure, but he could still think clearly. If he wanted to, he could withdraw his attention from the women. There was no pull like the others were experiencing.
The cheerleaders had silver blonde hair, full red lips, and deep bright eyes. Their moments were as enticing as they could be. But Harry knew in his mind this was all a farce, that he could not fall for their charm. As he thought about their appearance, it struck him. They were veela. He had read about them in a book in the Potter library.
As the veelas began their dance, Ron almost tried to jump out of the box, but efforts from Mr Weasley and Hermione stopped him, who immediately began chastising him for his actions.
"They are Veela" Hermione explained.
"There's a lot about them in the Hogwarts library, I found out about them while reading about amortentia in an advanced potions book." She added.
Harry found this amusing, he knew what amortentia was, "Isn't amortentia a love potion Hermione?" He questioned.
Hermione blushed red, while Ginny flustered in embarrassment her face as red as her hair.
"Harry, be serious. The book said veelas aren't full human and use their magic to charm anyone they find attractive." Hermione replied almost too quickly.
Harry smiled slyly, "That nice, but you still haven't told me why you were reading about amortentia?"
Hermione glared and huffed at Harry and turned away to talk to Ginny.
Harry just smiled and rolled his eyes. For someone who liked to poke her nose in everyone's business, Hermione was not as forthcoming about information when the time came to her.
The game continued and Harry was truly fascinated by it.
In the end the game finished as predicted by the twins who merrily boosted about their gamble.
The group returned to their tents and went to sleep, the excitement of their day having left them quite tired.
[Break]
Some shook him awake from his deep sleep.
"Harry, wake up, we need to leave now, get Ron and Hermione, and make way towards the forest. Stay together."
Harry fumbled out of his bed and his reflex through months of training kicked in. He quickly grabbed his glasses. He could hear bangs and shouts outside the tent. Quickly he made his way over to exit the tent where he met Ron, and Hermione.
"Come on Harry, we need to get out quick." Hermione almost yelled grabbing his arm.
As they made their way out, Harry looked upon utter chaos. Screams echoed everywhere.
Some tents were on fire, some laid in smouldering remains. Harry could not fathom what happened. Smoke thick enough to choke was carried by the summer breeze. Yells of help could be heard but were not responded to.
"Let's get out of here, quick" Ron mumbled as he ran ahead, Hermione following him.
As Harry was about to run behind them, his foot caught up in something on the ground and he fell.
He fumbled around trying to get up in the stamped.
Quickly he gained his footing, his wand reflexively in his hand and looked around, Ron and Hermione were nowhere to be found.
The scene before him whispered death and destruction, the night sky illuminated by the almost full moon casted shadows eerily on the ground.
"Ahhh!" A scream echoed around him, and not knowing what to do, Harry made his way towards it source.
(Disturbing scene ahead, read with caution)
As he came around a few tents, and peaked the sight before him, made him almost throw up.
In front of him, behind the remains of a smouldering tent was a group of wizards in black robes and white masks.
They stood in a circle around a fallen body.
He could see the person in the centre, it was a woman, middle aged. Her clothes were torn, and she was almost naked, blood running down her nose and bruised lips. She was holding someone close to her chest, her daughter probably. The daughter who looked to be a teenager was distraught. Her own clothes were torn to, and she was hugging her mother dearly. The mother appeared to be shielding the daughter.
Harry recognized them, they were muggles, the wife and daughter of the muggle man who had shown them to their tent.
The crowd around the two was laughing maniacally. Harry recognized them from the multiple description he had read and been given. They were death eaters, and it made his blood boil seeing what they were about to do.
"Crucio" A man in the death eater garb screamed pointing his wand at the older women. She screamed in agony. She withered around in pain, still holding her daughter close to her. The daughter sobbed and screamed into in her mother's chest.
The man who had just cast the spell moved forwards toward the fallen women.
"I am about to show you muggle bitches, your place in this world, you will know what it is." He screamed maniacally.
He caught the older woman by her arm and made her sit up. She was still holding her sobbing daughter. She knew what faith had brought upon her and hoped against all odds that they would be killed and not alive after this ordeal. She had no hope of being saved.
The man slowly untied his pants and lifted his cloak as he grabbed the woman by her head.
Harry had enough, he knew taking on so many death eaters by himself was a foolish idea. But he could see no help on the way and call it his recklessness or saving people thing, he came out of his hiding and casted the first spell that came to his mind furiously.
"Lacero" A spell he had learned from the Black library, a borderline dark cutting curse.
A light purple spell made its way towards the unassuming death eater. It caught him right on the neck, which was cleaved from his body. Blood spilled as the now headless body toppled near the women, both of whom screamed in terror.
Harry looked upon what the spell did. He had only casted the spell on training dummies and though he knew what it did, seeing it in real life had a different effect on him.
Well, his moment of getting lost in his own thoughts cost him, the other death eaters quickly reacted to the commotion seeing gone of them being killed so ruthlessly.
One of them fired the same spell Harry had used back at him.
Seeing the spell rush towards him, Harry dived to a side, but did not miss the spell completely. The spell grazed off his left arm, leaving behind a small cut, blood flowing out of it.
He quickly sprang into action. He knew he was hopelessly outnumbered.
"Bombarda, Confringo" He yelled causing several explosion pushing the death eater back and some unfortunate who caught the spells head on were put down. The scene filled with smoke and fire from the spells, drastically reducing the visibility.
The death eaters retaliated quickly.
"Bombarda, Lacero, Expulso"
Harry quickly yelled the shield charm "Protego Maximus", a barrier light blue in colour appearing before him. He stood his ground as the spells crashed in his barrier, vibrating it, he knew he could not hold it for much longer. Suddenly he heard a spell being yelled.
"Crucio" One of them yelled at their unnamed attacker.
Harry quickly dived to ground to escape the onslaught of the incoming spell. He missed it by a hair.
He knew this was getting increasingly difficult, and he had to get out of here soon.
"Reducto" he yelled.
The spell caught a white masked death eater right in the chest, blowing a hole in it as he fell to the ground. His comrades looked at him in horror. The death eaters had never faced strong resistance. Now here was someone fighting them back, killing them. They could not see who it was in all the smoke the battle had caused.
As Harry saw the man collapse with a hole in his chest, he knew he had brought himself time, but he needed more of it, and the only way to do so seemed to cause utter chaos.
Quickly Harry brandished his wand, and casted a stream of burning hot steam in the general direction of death eaters. The steam hissed as its shot at high speed through his wand. The death eaters in its direct path dropped their wands as they tried to save themselves from the boils and burns caused from the steam. They ducked and ran from its path.
Quickly adding to the chaos Harry casted an overpowered Augamenti charm on the ground and froze it to ice, causing the running death eaters to slip and fall into each other. He knew he had just bought himself some valuable time.
Harry quickly made his way towards the fallen women. They had taken to ground when the spells began flying. Both were trembling in fear. Harry knew not what not what to do. He had to protect them, but the fight with death eater was getting increasingly difficult.
Just as he steadied his position protectively around the fallen women, the death eaters regrouped from their recent loss.
"Avada Kedavra" One of them yelled pointing his wand towards him.
Harry quickly moved aside shielding the women, the killing curse just missing him.
Instinctively he remembered one of the spells from Potter grimoire. He quickly drew his wand in a horizontal eight motion and a black metal arrow with sizzling, bright orange flame on its tip materialized before him.
He banished the arrow towards the one that had fired the killing curse towards him.
The arrow pierced the man's chest, and made him curse loudly, but what followed was a sight that drew breath out of both Harry and the death eaters. The bright orange flame spread out across the means whole body as he screamed in agony. He started withering as his skin began to boil. But that was not it. The shaft of the metal arrow, burst into small pieces tearing his flesh. The flames turned from orange to green and suddenly his entire body exploded, leaving behind a mess of blood and skewed half burned organs.
The death eater panicked at such a cruel end of one of them. They got ready to cast together at the man who had brought such destruction upon them. To put an end to the menace.
As they were all about to cast, shouts of Aurors filled the scene.
Just as they were about to leave, suddenly a huge skull with a snake protruding from its mouth lightened the night sky.
The death eater panicked and realized that it was over. They quickly grabbed something from their pockets and picking up what was left of dead bodies disappeared in a woosh of portkeys.
Harry stayed his ground. He knew he had to leave quickly, if Aurors were to find him at the scene, especially with the spell he had cast, he would be in great trouble. He could hear the distant shouts and see figures coming towards them from the smoke and dust flying around. He didn't know what it was that had materialized in the sky, but something told him it was no good. His gut clenched at sight before him.
He quickly conjured a blanket and wrapped it around the trembling women. The aurors were approaching. Harry hoped that the Weasleys and Hermione had made it safely out of this mess.
He was wounded, the cut on his left arm still blooding. There were a few other minor cuts and bruises all over his body.
He quickly activated his Lord's ring and focused to be apparated to the Potter Manor.
