Chapter One - Maya tries to talk to Sullivan about being captain

* Andy lives in her own apartment, NOT with Maya.

*I don't totally know where I'm going to take this story,

Maya goes to the Station's gym where Sullivan is. Sullivan is riding a bike when she comes in.

"What are you still doing here?" Sullivan asked, looking at Maya briefly

"I didn't get a chance to get my workout in today." Maya paused to pick up a weight. "It's great to meet Chief Dixon. Seems like a real breath of fresh air. And I thought you handled the incident really well."

"What do you want, Bishop?" Sullivan asked before Maya said anything else.

"I know you're in the running for Battalion Chief. And I know you stand a good chance of getting it. I want to make captain when you do."

"There's no guarantee I'll get-"

Maya cuts Sullivan off. "We both know you're the best man for the job. And we both know I'm the best woman for the job." Neither Maya nor Sullivan notice that Andy is outside the door "Gibson and Herrera both let their personal lives get in the way of their careers. I do not." Andy walks in but Maya still didn't notice her. Sullivan tried to talk but Maya just kept going "I have no conflicts. No baggage. I have spent a lifetime dedicating every waking hour to my goals. And I always achieve them. I am the next captain of Station 19."

Sullivan holds a hand up to Andy so he could talk. "I just made you lieutenant. What's the rush?'

"If gold's within my reach, why wouldn't I grab it?" Maya asked, still bench pressing.

That's when Andy speaks up. "Because "gold" belongs to someone else you backstabbing-"

"Andy don't," Sullivan warned while Maya put the bench press back on the stand and sat up, surprised that Andy was still at the station.

"Can I speak, Captain?" Andy asked Sullivan, looking at him with slightly pleading eyes. Sullivan nods, not knowing if he'll regret this or not. "I've had firefighting in my blood my whole life. That's been my sole goal in life. My ONLY goal. You've had running on your mind since you were super young and winning in your mind since you were three, Maya." Andy pauses briefly. "Your whole mindset is "you win or lose". Firefighting isn't something you win or lose at. It's something you work your whole life towards, at least great firefighters do. I know almost everyone else here had a career or went to college or university before they started working here, inspired by my dad and turning out to be great, but I deserve this Maya. I don't know why you think I'm letting my personal life get in the way of my career. Like I don't get it. You had a public relationship with Jack, I didn't. I grew up around this station, I helped my dad with paperwork. I started rolling hoses when I was 7. I've been preparing for this for the majority of my life. I'm not going to let you steal this from me." Andy said, walking out of the gym and down the stairs to the parking lot where her car was.

Andy just sat in her car, head resting against the wheel, trying to get her breathing under control before she starts to drive out of the station's parking lot and drove to Grey Sloan. When she got to the hospital she made her way to reception, asking where Dr. Grey was, having gotten closer to the doctor since she helped her when she first found out about her dad being sick.

"Dr. Grey is in surgery right now but I can page her if it's an emergency." The receptionist told Andy.

"It isn't an emergency, but thank you for letting me know," Andy replied, turning around and as she was walking out she bumped into Amelia Shepard and Maggie Pierce.

"Whoa, Andy. You okay?" Amelia asked, grabbing hold of Andy's arm when she stumbled.

Andy nodded. "I'm fine, thanks. Guess I just got caught up in my thoughts." Andy tried to get by them but got stopped when she felt another hand grab her.

"Andy, we know you've gotten close to Meredith since you met her. She cares about you. She'd kick our asses for not checking on you." Maggie told Andy.

"They're right." they heard a voice say from behind them. Andy turns around and sees Dr. Grey.

"I thought you were in surgery?" Andy asked, facing her.

"We just finished," Meredith told her. "What's going on, Herrera?"

"Can we go somewhere more private to talk?" Andy asked and Meredith nodded, taking Herrera to her office.

"All right. We're away from prying eyes." Meredith said. "What happened, Andy?"

Andy sighed and sat down on the couch in Meredith's office. "I just needed a break from things and I know that we've only recently gotten close but you did promise to get drinks with me soon so I thought I'd come here before going back to an empty apartment and taking you up on the offer instead," Andy told her, rubbing a hand over her forehead, trying to calm her thoughts.

Meredith walks over to the couch, bends down in front of Andy and grabs one of her hands. "Andy, I'd love to get a drink with you but not to bury your emotions." Andy looks away from Meredith and to her lap. "Hey, how about you hang out here until my shift is done and then we can go to you're apartment and just hang out," Meredith suggests and Andy nods, giving a small smile. "I can invite Amelia and Maggie if you want to. Maybe even Teddy?"

"I'd love that. Thank you." Andy said, "But only if they don't mind."

"They won't. We don't get to hang out much since work's kind of been hectic lately so they'll love an excuse to get together." Meredith told her, smiling.

"Is it okay if I invite a friend of mine?"

"We'll be going to your apartment, so yes." Meredith easily agreed. She took a minute to really look at Andy and saw the bags under her eyes. "Andy?" Andy looked up "What's going on?"

"I am just so tired, Mer." Andy looked down again.

"Are we talking physical or mental right now?" Meredith asked, concerned. Knowing what she went through with her dad and all the drama with Sullivan.

"Both," Andy replied quickly. "More so physical. Work has just been pretty demanding lately and with everything else, I just haven't really had time to relax or anything like that." Andy told her, eyes watering.

"So I know we've said we're not the hugging type of people, but you're getting one whether you want one or not right now," Meredith told the firefighter, pulling her into a tight hug she felt Andy relax into the hug after a couple of seconds. She heard Andy's breathing become shaky and felt a couple of tears hit her neck and pulled back. "Andy, I am so sorry you're going through so much right now." Meredith held her tighter. "I wish there was more I could do for you."

Once Andy calmed down she pulled back. "You being here is enough. Don't have a lot of people I can trust in my life right now." Andy told her, eyes still red and watery.

"I'm glad you know you can trust me." Meredith smiles. "Listen, I got to go check on my patients but I'll be back as soon as I can, okay?" Andy nods. "Lay down. Get some rest."

"Thank you, Mer." Meredith nods and walks out of the room, locking the door behind her. Andy sighs and falls back on the couch, bringing down a blanket that had been laying on the back of the couch with her and falls asleep.

* I don't really know much about Teddy's character so I don't know if I should be writing her. The same kind of goes for Amelia and Maggie. I do know that Amelia is Bi tho...

* I don't know if I should have Pruitt be alive or have him lose his FIRST battle with cancer.

* Carina isn't in the picture yet.

Anyways, thanks for reading :)
