Competition, it sometimes brings out the good but also the worst in people. We all want to achieve some things, the question is, how far will you go, to achieve your goal?
A couple of doctors were waiting outside Bailey's office. The door opened and Arizona walked out.
"And what do you think Dr. Bailey?"
"You'll hear from me Dr. Robbins," Bailey said.
"Can't you say anything about it?" Arizona asked.
"Next."
A doctor stood up and walked into the office. Arizona walked toward the Attending's Lounge and went inside.
"And how did it go?" April asked.
"Good, I think I have a chance," Arizona said. "When do you have interview?"
"In the afternoon," April replied.
"Good luck."
"Thanks," April said, standing up and walking towards the door. "I'm gonna go check on Nisha."
"I have to meet Koracick at CT," Arizona said as she also left the Lounge.
Jackson was standing at the front desk going through it. Link came into the hospital and walked up to Jackson.
"Good morning Dr. Avery," he greeted.
"Dr. Lincoln," Jackson greeted back. "You okay?"
"Yes, I'm good," Link said. "There's just one little thing I'm wondering?"
"What is it?"
"I was supposed to get a fellow named Jo Karev, but I haven't seen him yet," Link said.
"Jo's a woman," Jackson said.
"Oh."
And she's on her honeymoon right now with her husband," Jackson explained.
"Newlyweds and a honeymoon, I remember mine like it was yesterday," Link said.
"You're married?"
"Was married, Got divorced a few years ago," Link said grabbing his phone and showing Jackson a picture of his son. "We have a son together, His name is Scout."
"He looks sweet," Jackson said.
"Thank you," Link said putting his phone back in his pocket. "Are you married or have you ever been married?"
"Been married and we have children too," Jackson said as he grabbed his phone to show Link a photo of his kids. "These are my children, Harriet and Quentin."
"And you and your ex-wife are you still on good terms?" Link asked.
"Yes, I still see her every day," Jackson replied. "I was married to Dr. Kepner."
"Really?"
Jackson nodded his head, he heard his pager go off and looked at it; "Speaking of Dr. Kepner, we need to get to Nisha."
"I'll be right there, I've to go get changed," Link said.
"And don't worry about Jo, you got a good one with her, she Ortho natural."
Jackson walked over to April and Schmitt, the two were discussing Nisha's status, overnight Nisha had spiked a post-op fever. Cece looked over at Nisha to see how she was doing, while Helm was checking her iv.
"Is she okay?" Cece asked.
"Just lay back, Ms. Colvin. Try to relax," Helm said.
"She's been in and out since you left, and her blood pressure's dropping," April said.
"All right, let's get a sepsis work-up, a chest X-ray, and some cultures," Jackson said.
"Blood and urine is already done," Schmitt said.
Jackson walked over to Nisha's bed; "Hey, Nisha, I'm gonna check out your back, all right?" He said. "It might sting a little bit."
"Nisha, how you feeling?" Cece asked.
"I don't know," Nisha said. "How am I feeling?"
"You got a bit of an infection back here, but I'm gonna change up your antibiotics, okay?" Jackson said.
"You can do whatever you want to me," Nisha said, she began to chuckle. "See? I flirted!"
"Excellent work. A little aggressive, but once the drugs wear off, we'll work on the nuance," Cece said.
Cece passed out and the alarms started blaring.
"She's in V-Tach! Pull in the crash cart!"
"What's happening?" Nisha asked.
"Paddles," Jackson said, he took of the gloves and walked over to Cece'so room. "Sync charge to 100."
Helm got the paddles ready and handed them to Jackson
"All right, here we go. We got you," Jackson said placing the paddles on Cece's chest. "Clear!"
Jackson shocked Cece put she was still in V-Tach. Jackson told Helm to charge to 120. Nisha begged to doctors to help Cece. They charged to 200 and Cece opened her eyes and coughed.
"What... What happened?"
"Jackson, her heart rate's climbing," April said.
"Ah, it's gonna be a long day," Jackson said walking back to Nisha's room. "Here we go."
Meredith and Jenna were sitting at the table in the Attending's Lounge enjoying their coffee.
"How did your first day yesterday go Dr. Wyatt?"
"Pretty good," Jenna replied. "And please just call me Jenna."
"Are you by any chance adopted? Meredith jokingly asked.
"How did you know that?" Jenna asked.
"I didn't," Meredith said.
"Then why do you ask?" Jenna asked.
"Because the last Head of Cardio turned out to be a sister of mine," Meredith explained. "The question was meant more as a joke, a pretty bad joke actually."
"Yes, I am adopted, but I have a biological brother, I've no sisters," Jenna said.
"Are you still in touch with your brother?" Meredith said.
Jenna got a sad facial expression; "We were separated very young, I have no idea where he went, I don't even know if he's still alive."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Meredith said.
"It's okay," Jenna said. "Come we must go see Cece."
Jenna drank the last sip of her coffee and left the Lounge, Meredith got up and followed her.
Jo woke up slowly, she felt Alex fingers going through her hair.
"Morning," Alex said.
"Good morning."
"Did you sleep well?" Alex asked.
"Yes, this was perfect," Jo said.
"It really was," Alex was, he planned his lips on Jo's and the two started kissing.
"Mr. Karev?"
Alex and Jo stopped kissing and turned to see a man standing with a tray in his hands and on his name card the name Eddie was written.
"Breakfast for you and your beautiful wife," he said.
"Thank you Eddie," Alex said.
Eddie brought Eddie Alex and Jo breakfast. And the married couple enjoyed a delicious breakfast together.
Amelia was sitting in Bailey's office and it was now her turn for the interview for the position of Interim Chief.
"I know what you're thinking, I'm already Head of Neuro, how will she handle Interim Chief too?" Amelia said. "Well, a lot has happened, I got married, divorced, my ex-husband adopts a baby from a teenager, who used to be an addict, a person who I saw as a sister, more than my other sister has moved away, so you my life is a bit of a mess at this moment."
"And this is the reason on why I should pick you?" Bailey asked.
"Because everyone knows that people with the most disastrous lives are brilliant at work," Amelia said. "Also I'm incredibly bossy by nature."
"Dr. Shepherd," Bailey began.
"Okay seriously what does Teddy Altman have that I don't, I mean I know you asked her for the job and she rejected, but seriously what is it?"
"Thank you for your time Dr. Shepherd," Bailey said.
After Amelia's interview was it time for Webber's interview.
"You know that many people still call me Chief out of habit? I mean, I can ensure a seamless transition...," Webber said.
"Okay, let's say I give you the position, how would you handle the next situation?" Bailey said. "A doctor commits a crime, even though it's for the good of the patient, but still it's a crime."
"I would investigate the situation, talk to the doctor and if it's really that bad, I would fire the doctor," Webber said.
"Even if that doctor let's say is Meredith Grey?" Bailey asked.
"That's not fair, Bailey."
"I think it's fair question," Bailey said.
"I don't have an answer for that one," Webber said.
"Then I can tell you that's not going to be you," Bailey said.
"Come on Bailey," Webber said.
"How can I trust you in this position if you're going to give certain doctor special treatment over others? What message would that send to the others?"
Arizona and Tom along with Kyle and Qadri sat in the CT room and watched the scans of Chase's head.
"The swelling shrank, that' good," Tom said.
"He regain any consciousness?" Arizona asked.
Qadri looked at the tablet; "No, he has not been conscious, his stats look good."
"There would be at least something of a change," Arizona said.
"It was a successful operation, there were no complications," Kyle said.
"Why isn't he awake yet?"
"Maybe it's something mental?"
"Until we know what it is I want Chase McGregor checked every hour," Arizona said. "I need to update the mother, Koracick come with me please.0
"As you wish," he said.
Arizona and Tom got up and left the room, to update the mother. Kyle and Qadri brought Chase back to his room.
"Why is my son not awake yet?" Samantha asked.
"We unfortunately have no idea, but we are keeping an eye on Chase right now," Arizona said.
"You said the surgery was successful," Samantha pointed out.
"Ma'am, you need to try to stay calm," Tom said.
"Stay calm?" Samantha turned around and pointed to the room where Chase was lying, "My son is lying there! You guys drilled a hole in his skull yesterday and nothing has changed. Don't tell me to stay calm while my son is lying there like that right now."
"Samantha," Arizona began.
"Do you have children Dr. Robbins?" She asked.
"A daughter."
Samantha turned to Tom; "And you Dr. Koracick?"
"A son," Tom swallowed. "And I understand how difficult this is for you, believe I say this as a father, not as a doctor."
"We are doing everything we can to find out what is wrong with Chase," Arizona said.
"We won't rest until we know exactly what's going on," Tom said.
"Thank you," Samantha said. "You know I'm doing this all by myself and it's not easy."
"The father of your sons?"
"He is no longer here, he died overseas," Samantha explained. "After his death we moved to our current home, too many memories there."
"That's totally understandable," Tom said.
"The boys now had to share a room and both wanted bunk beds and then I thought this was fun for the boys," Samantha said. "And that choice could lead to Chase's death."
"Like I said we're gonna do everything we can to find out what's going on with Chase," Tom said.
"I need to get back to my other son, this isn't easy for him and also with the lack of sleep," Samantha said.
"I'll ask one of the nurses to bring you and your son something to eat and drink," Arizona said.
"Thank you."
Arizona and Tom walked away and the mother went to the room were Troy sat
"I've to go, I've my interview with Bailey soon," Tom said.
"Good luck," Arizona said.
"Won't need it."
Bailey was in her office getting ready for the next interview. Tom walked into the office and sat down.
"Dr. Bailey."
"No," Bailey said.
"You haven't even given me a chance to tell my story," Tom said.
"Go ahead Dr. Koracick," Bailey said reluctantly.
"Thank you," Tom said. Now picture it, Interim Chief Tom Koracick."
"I'd rather not," Bailey said.
"I'm a great Neuro Surgeon, have an excellent reputation, The students I trained have a lot of good things to say to me," Tom said, he turend to Bailey who didn't look impressed. "No matter what I say, I'm not going to get the job right?"
"No."
"Thank you for your time,Dr. Bailey," Tom said.
Nisha's fever got higher, Cece was sitting by her bedside, stroking Nisha's hair while she sang to her.
"Cece, you really need to be back in bed," Schmitt said.
Cece didn't move she continued to sing for Nisha. Schmitt walked over to the other doctors.
"Uh, exactly. I mean, she went into V-Tach at least four times in the middle of the night."
"And until the dialysis restores her electrolytes, she's at risk for arrhythmias."
"We could start her on an amiodarone drip." Helm suggested.
"All right, well let's keep that as a plan and just keep rechecking her potassium," Meredith said.
"And how's Nisha?" April asked.
"She's septic, white count of 22.00 and we started her on pressors," Schmitt said. "Her parents are on a flight back from Tokyo now, but until they get here, Cece won't leave her side."
"So, let's make sure that she wears a mask and gloves."
"Yeah. Send for an ABG and, uh, lactic acid," Jackson said.
"Right away," doctor, Schmitt said as he went to get Cece a mask and some gloves.
"Thanks for keeping an eye on her," Meredith said. "She's a very sweet woman, but she's so aggressive with the..."
"The matchmaking?"
"Yes."
"Right? Yeah, no kidding. She asked me about my status, my relationship history, my ten year plan. Career- and relationship-wise."
"That's why I can't go back in there," Meredith said.
"I think it's kinda sweet," April said.
"You think it's sweet now," Meredith said. "But April, I can guarantee you that once you get in there she will have a field day with you."
"Well I just tell her that I'm not looking for a relationship right now," April said.
"Neither am I," Meredith said.
"Yeah, but you should just tell her you have work, you know?" Jackson said.
"And what does that mean?" Meredith asked.
"Like, that you're married to your work."
"I mean... But I'm not."
"Oh, come on, we all are," Jackson said. "Just you are especially."
"Excuse me?" Meredith said feeling offended.
Jackson awkwardly cleared his throat; "Have you seen the, uh, hyperbaric chamber? That thing is finished, so it's probably worth taking a little peek."
Jackson cleared his throat again and walked away fast.
"You're very successful," Helm said.
"Oh, very. Very successful," Jackson called from a distance.
Meredith ignored Helm and Jackson' comment and turned to April, who quickly looked at her watch.
"Look at the time, I've to go, I've my interview with Bailey soon, So I'm just gonna go," she said.
After having done some interviews, Bailey decided to take a break, she walked down to the basement and to a look around the hyperbaric chamber.
"Whoa."
Bailey turned around and saw Link standing in the hyperbaric chamber.
"It's like a spa, but on the moon, Just, uh, put on some smooth jazz and some slippers, light some candles, and, uh..."
"And you'd blow yourself up, Bailey said. See, when these doors are closed, it pressurizes the room up to three atmospheres. It will radically decrease healing time. This is a world-class hyperbaric chamber."
"Yeah, no, I know. But moon spa sounds better," Link said. "I've got some requisitions that need approval. Does that go through you, or... You choose an interim chief yet?"
"Please don't tell me that you too are interested in the job?"!She asked worried.
"I wouldn't touch that job with a -foot pole. That job comes with stress. Bones break under stress. So do souls. Simple... that's the key to life, Link said. "But did you make a choice?"
"I've still got interviews going on and then I've to go over the final considerations," Bailey said.
"Yeah, it's a tough decision. I mean, you want somebody good, but not better than you, right? Like a solid substitute player, maybe plays half the game."
"I'm sorry?"
"You want a third-, maybe fourth-round draft pick so your people really miss you when you're gone. I mean, we all know what happens when LeBron's on the bench, right? The crowd goes wild... MVP, MVP, MV...,"
Link turned to Bailey and she just looked at him with a confused look.
"You're LeBron. They want you back on the court as soon as possible. Not into basketball?" Link said. "Okay, uh, enjoy your moon spa."
Link walked out of the hyperbaric chamber and left the still confused Bailey behind.
Kyle walked to the room where Chase's brother Troy was sitting, he was playing a game on his tablet.
"Hello."
"Hey"
"How are you doing?" Kyle asked.
"Good, I'm playing a game, neighbor brought some of our stuff here," Troy said.
"That's nice," Kyle said.
"Stupid shit game, Troy yelled. "I die every time at this level every time."
Kyle saw that Troy was ready to smash the tablet on the ground; "Whoa, calm down."
"I hate this game," Troy said.
"What game is it?" Kyle asked.
"Battle Area 2,"!Troy replied.
"What level?"
"27."
"That's a tough level," Kyle said as he said down next to Troy. "Can I."
"Go ahead," Troy said handing the tablet to Kyle.
"You have to sneak up on the enemy in the lower left-hand corner, and then," Kyle explained, clearing the level. "And I did it."
"Finally, now I can do level 28," Troy said.
Kyle handed the tablet back to Troy; "Watch out for the parachute soldiers landing around the water, trust me they will come."
"They won't stand a chance," Troy said.
"Are you and Chase close?" Kyle asked.
"He's my younger brother," Troy replied.
"Yeah, I heard you both really wanted bunk beds," Kyle said.
"Chase probably doesn't want it anymore after his fall," Troy said. "But yeah, I always wanted the top bunk anyway."
"And you're going going to get it now?" Kyle asked.
"Would something like that make you still want to sleep in the top bunk?" Troy said.
"I..," Kyle began.
"I'll sleep up in that bed after this," Troy said, he turend back to his game. "I see you and kill you all."
"Good luck with your game," Kyle said.
Troy said nothing and continued playing his game, Kyle got up and left the room again.
Jackson put on his mask and gloves and walked into Nisha's room, Cece was still sitting at her bedside and Schmitt was checking her vitals.
"How is she Schmitt?" He asked.
"Her cultures are back."
"We need to isolate her and get her into O.R., stat, Cece, I need you on the other side of that glass right now, please," Jackson said.
"Her parents aren't here yet. I don't want to leave her alone," Cece said.
"Right now. Please. Thank you."
Schmitt helped Cece up and brought her back to her room.
Jackson turned his attention back to Nisha; "Nisha, you've got an infection, okay? It's called necrotizing fasciitis. It's very serious. We're gonna get you straight into the O.R., okay?"
"Tell my mom I love her. Tell her thank you. Tell her... "
"You're just getting started, Nisha. Do you hear me? You are just getting started," Cece said.
"Schmitt, wait. We're not taking her to the O.R. "Let me get her to the basement," Jackson said.
"What's in the basement?" He asked.
Jackson walked out of the room; "I got to find Bailey."
April was in Bailey's office for her interview.
"And as you know I have been Chief Resident," April said. "And I am very organized, "I almost organized Jo and Alex entire wedding."
"Dr. kepner, I know all this," Bailey said.
"Then you know that I'm qualified for the job," April said.
"I think you're extremely qualified," Bailey said. "But you're not getting the job."
"Is this because of my problems I had, I've sought help, I've been cleared for everything and I'm still going to talk to a therapist."
"Kepner it has nothing to do with that," Bailey said.
"Then why not?" April asked.
"Didn't Dr. Hunt talk to you?" Bailey asked.
"Dr. Hunt? What does he have to do with this?" April asked.
"Dr. Hunt is going away for a long time," Bailey said.
"He's leaving?"
Before Bailey could explain why Owen will be leaving, April got up and left the office. The door opened again and Jackson walked into Bailey's office.
"Dr. Avery you're not on my interview list," Bailey said.
"I'm not here for that, he said. My patient has necrotizing fasciitis. I need the hyperbaric chamber. I think it's her only shot."
"You want to debride her in the chamber, How would you do that? You can't use any electricity in down. No cautery, no..."
"It's okay, I'll go old school. I'll just use a scalpel," Jackson said.
"No, you sit in there You don't operate in there," Bailey said. "Think of it like a spa."
"Debriding in high-flow oxygen has shown to improve survival outcomes in crush injuries with wound infections," Jackson said.
"Debriding with a scalpel would take hours. You'd be putting your staff at risk for decompression illness, a-and you'd be stuck in here. You couldn't leave until it was depressurized,"?Bailey said.
"There is a medical spaceship that you built for us to save lives, and the only one standing in the way of me saving hers is you," Jackson said. "Please."
Alex and Jo were at the beach again. Alex was sitting in his chair reading a magazine and Jo was making a sandcastle. An employee of the hotel approached.
"Mr. and Mrs. Karev."
"Yes."
"I'm Amanda and I'm here with not so good news," she said.
"What is it?" Jo asked.
"You better come with me," Amanda said.
Alex and Jo got up and walked Amanda back to the hotel. They arrived at their room and when they went inside they saw that their whole room was covered in ash.
"What happened?" Alex asked.
"A fire had broken out in the room next door and it spread, but your room didn't get the fulldamaged," Amanda said. "And as for your things, they will be reimbursed by us."
"Thank you."
Amanda left the room. Alex and Jo looked around at ash covered space that had once been their nice hotel room.
Jo turend to her husband; "Now what?" She asked.
Nisha was brought down to the basement and put in the hyperbaric chamber.
"All right, once this door closes, you're in. If we depressurize too quick, you will get nitrogen toxicity. You're also looking at eardrum rupture, lung collapse, sinus damage, changes in vision," Bailey explained. "Don't forget to pop your ears!"
The door of the chamber closed and the doctors were getting ready.
April walked through the hospital looking for Owen and found him at the front desk of the Pit.
"Hi April," Owen greeted.
"You're leaving?" She asked.
"How do you know?" Owen asked.
"Bailey, she told me during the interview and that because of your leaving I can't become Interim Chief," April said.
Owen sighed deeply and put his hand on April's shoulder; "It's true, I'm leaving."
"Why?" April asked.
"Leo, I want to be him for him," Owen explained.
"Oh," April said feeling guilty for being angry at him.
"And technically I'm still hav a right to paternity leave and I have a lot of vacation days left, so "I'm going to make good use of it," Owen said.
"I totally get it, Dr. Hunt, and I'm sorry for my response."
"It's okay April," Owen said. "And during that time I'm gone, I want you to take over my position as Head of Trauma."
"You want what?" April asked.
"You heard me, I want you to take over my position as Head of Trauma," Owen said. "And I've already discussed this with Chief Bailey and she agrees."
"You're really trusting me with this? Head of Trauma?" April asked
"There's no one I would trust more," Owen said.
"Thank you, Dr. Hunt," April said. "I'll try not to disappoint you."
"I know you won't," Owen said.
April hugged Owen; "I'm gonna miss you."
"I'm going to miss you too, April," Owen said.
Meredith and Jenna were sitting on the couch waiting for Cece's studies, Meredith was eating some cookies, she turned to Jenna's direction; "Cookie?"
"Are they gluten-free?" She asked.
"No, I don't think so," Meredith said.
"That's nice of you to offer, but I have a gluten allergy," Jenna said. "All I have to do now is find a store here that carries good gluten-free products."
"Then you should talk to April," Meredith said.
"April?"
"Dr. Kepner, her daughter has a gluten allergy, "I'm sure she knows a good store," Meredith said.
"I will talk to her," Jenna said.
"Would you do the check up on Cece later this afternoon, I've my interview with Bailey," Meredith said.
"Sure no problem," Jenna said.
"Thanks."
The computer started dinging, Meredith and Jenna got up to look at the studies,
"I may be a little rusty with hearts, but that "looks likeā¦," Meredith began.
"It's barley pumping," Jenna said. "The scar tissue's restricted her entire heart."
Jackson and some of the other staff members were working on Nisha. Jackson wanted to move and almost hit Schmitt in the face with is elbow.
"Schmitt, if you stand there, my elbow's gonna be in your face for hours. I need you to move."
"How many hours are we thinking? A nervous Schmitt asked. "I... I should have mentioned, I'm a tad claustrophobic."
"You're... You're standing on her suction."
"Schmitt!"
Link entered the basement and walked up to the chamber; I didn't sign off on this!"
"I did. I signed," Bailey said.
"Well, she's my patient, too. Open up the door, "I want in," Link said.
Jackson said something, but because of all the static Link and Bailey were unable to hear what he said.
"And why doesn't that work for all the money I paid for that?"
"Let me in," Link said.
"I can't. It's already pressurized. They're in. "You're out," Bailey said.
"Oh, God. I'm feeling like I, uh... I can't breathe. Anyone else feel that? Like there's not enough air?" Schmitt said.
"We're in compressed air. It's literally the whole point of this thing, all right? So just grab a scalpel. Take a breath," Jackson said.
Schmitt took a deep breath, he grabbed a scalpel and started to help working on Nisha.
Helm was in Cece room. Cece stared down Nisha's bed and sang the song she sang for Nisha before. Meredith entered to room.
"How's Nisha?" Cece asked.
"She's still in with Dr. Avery," Meredith said. "Cece, we need to talk about your heart.
"Tell me I didn't kill that girl, Dr. Grey. Please.
"Go get me an update on Nisha, please," Meredith asked Helm.
Helm hadn't made it to the door and the alarms started blaring, Cece was out again.
"Get me a crash cart," Meredith said.
Helm grabbed the crash cart and gave the paddles to Meredith.
"Let's page Dr. Wyatt, Charge to 100"
Kyle was in Chase's room and was doing the check up, everything seemed okay and no particulars. Kyle looked at the door and saw Troy standing in the doorway.
"Hey Troy."
Suddenly Chase heart rate went up, Kyle walked over to the Chase to see what was going on, he also turned to Troy, who looked at his little brother with a cool look and then walked away.
Kyle turned his attention toward Chase; "He's gone, your brother is gone."
And Chase heart rate went down again and looked normal again. Kyle added information to the tablet, left the room and went looking for Arizona and Tom.
"Dr. Nolan how is Chase doing?" Tom asked.
"His heart rate went up," Kyle said, handing over the tablet to Arizona.
"It's not supposed to happen," she said.
"It is when he's scared," Kyle said.
"Scared of what?" Qadri asked.
"His brother," Kyle said.
"Explain," Tom said.
"I was doing Chase's hourly check up, I saw his brother standing in the opening, I said hey Troy and then his heart rate went up, But it was also the way Troy was looking at Chase, that look in his eyes."
"What was that look like?" Tom asked.
"Cold, like he didn't care about any of this," Kyle explained. "And before that, he reacted so aggressively too when things didn't work out with his game."
"You think the brother had something to do with it?" Arizona asked.
"I'm no detective, but my gut says something is going on," Kyle said.
"Dr. Qadri, how do you remember Chase's family yesterday?" Arizona asked.
"Mother was quite upset, didn't see much of the brother, but from what I saw, he didn't show much emotion," Qadri said.
"Dr. Robbins what do you think?" Tom asked.
"The surgery was successful, he should have already regained consciousness or signs of it, then it must be something mental," Arizona said.
"You mean he's not waking up because of his brother, he's afraid of his brother?" Qadri asked.
Arizona grabbed her phone and went through her contacts list; "I want to find out."
"Who are you calling?" Tom asked.
"Dr. Rosen, he from Psychiatry, he specializes with children," Arizona said daling te number. "Hi Ian, you're talking to Arizona, I need your help with something."
Cece was awake again and Jenna was busy doing an heart exam on her.
"First, I was worried about my heart, but it was my kidneys. Now that I'm worried about my kidneys, you're worried about my heart," Cece said.
"Cece, I'd like to do a heart biopsy on you, which is...," Jenna began.
"I've had three hearts, Dr. Wyatt I could probably do a biopsy on myself," Cece said.
Jenna chuckled; "Right. Okay, so you know that I'll have a better idea once I can actually get in there and see the muscle."
"Okay, so let's change her dialysis bag, start her on a lasix drip, then get her upstairs," Meredith said.
"On it," Helm said. "Whatever you need, Dr. Grey."
Meredith and Jenna left the room. Helm walked over to Cece to change her dialysis bag.
"I spent years of my life falling for straight women," Cece said.
"I don't know what you mean," Helm said.
"Hook me up to that thing and sit down. Let me save you from a whole life of misery."
Arizona, Tom, Kyle and Qadri were in a room with Dr. Rosen and Troy.
"Why am I here?" Troy asked.
"Hi Troy, I'm Dr. Rosen, I'm here to talk about your little brother," Rosen said.
"Why?"
"Well it must be hard for you that your little brother is here now, I know I would find it hard if my brother was in the hospital."
"I don't want to be here," Troy said.
"In the hospital or here with us in this room?" Rosen asked.
"I want to go to my own room," Troy said.
"Tell me about your bunk bed," Rosen said.
"Chase got the top bunk," Troy said.
"You wanted the top bunk too?"
"Our mom flipped a coin, Chase won and then the top bunk, I want it, I should have gotten it, then this wouldn't have had to happen."
"What wouldn't have to happen? That you Chase pushed out of the bed?"
"Exactly," Troy said.
"But why?" Qadri asked.
Troy turned to Qadri and looked at her with an icy stare; 0Because I wanted the top bunk."
The four doctors looked shocked at Troy, disturbed by his confession and feeling even more disturbed by the fact that he said without any remorse.
Jenna finished checking up on Cece and walked out of the room and then ran into April, who was looking around.
"Where is my patient? Where is Nisha?" She asked.
"Dr. Avery took her to the hyperbaric chamber in the basement," Jenna explained.
"Without checking with me?" April asked.
"I had no idea you didn't know, Dr. Kepner. I'm sorry," Jenna said.
"It's okay," April told her.
"I'm Jenna, by the way, Jenna Wyatt, I saw you yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to introduce myself."
"Hi Jenna, so I'm Dr. Kepner, but you can just call me April."
"I will, if you'll just call me Jenna," Jenna said.
"You got it," April said.
"There was something I wanted to ask you,
"Sure, you can ask me anything," April said.
"Meredith told me that your daughter has a gluten allergy," Jenna said.
"That is right."
"I have a gluten allergy myself and according to Meredith you know where there is a good store with gluten-free products," Jenna said.
"I know a good store, I will send you the name and address," April said.
"Thank you."
April nodded her head smiling; "You're welcome," she said.
Jackson, Schmitt and other doctors were still down the hyperbaric chamber working on Nisha, while Link watched, April entered to basement and stood next to link
"And how are we?"
"Better, Ears a little stopped, but..,"
"Our patient," Jackson said. "How is our patient?"
"Pressure is up, heart rate is stable, steady stats," Schmitt said.
"And finally got ourselves some viable tissue," Jackson said. "Blood has never looked so good."
Jackson turned to the door and saw that April and Link were happy for him that it worked.
"And the peanut gallery is happy too.
"I can't believe it worked, Such a cray idea, but brilliant," Schmitt said.
"We gotta try our best right," Jackson said.
Schmitt nodded his head as he agreed with Jackson.
After quickly making some arrangements, Alex and Jo were back in Seattle, went to Grey-Sloan and ran into Bailey.
"Dr. Bailey," Alex greeted.
"I thought you were on your honeymoon?"
"Unfortunately, due to circumstances, our plans have changed," Jo said.
"Is everything okay, Dr. Bailey?" Alex asked.
"I'm busy. I'm still looking for an Interim Chief,
"Interim chief?" Alex asked.
"You interested, Karev?" Bailey asked.
"I might be," Alex said
"Come with me," Bailey said.
Qadri was with some police officers in room where Troy was sitting, Arizona, Tom and Dr. Rosen were breaking the news to the mother.
"Please tell that isn't true, Samantha begged.
"Unfortunately, it's," Arizona said.
"But why?"
"Troy has a sickness that's in his head," Rosen said.
"My son tried to kill my other son?"
"Troy needs help," Rosen said, he handed Samantha some pamphlets. "These are institutions for kids like your son, I called them all and they all have a place for your son. Just read through these and let me know."
"So know I've to make a choice of which institute to send my son to?" Samantha asked.
"Take your time," Rosen said.
Kyle walked up; "Mrs. McGregor, Chase is awake and he is asking for you."
Samantha put the brouchers in her bag and headed toward her son.
Bailey had gone down the basement and watched with April and Link as Jackson was almost done with Nisha.
"All right. We're almost done here."
"The machine started beeping rapidly.
"Why are her vitals dropping? We already debrided the source."
"I don't know. She's still hypotensive, tachycardic. Switching to manual ventilation."
The three doctors noticed that something was happening, Bailey pushed the intercom button to talk to Jackson, but couldn't because of the static.
"She's crashing. Max out her pressors. Come on," Jackson said.
Link walked to the other side of the chamber, he knocked on the glass trying to tell Jackson to check under the drapes.
"W-What is he pointing at?" Jackson asked.
"The drapes?" Schmitt guessed.
"The drapes? Yeah, she's sterile," Jackson said.
Link made a X with his arms and Jackson knew what he meant.
"Infection spread to the ex-fix, I need ortho to remove this hardware now," Jackson said.
"He can't come in until we depressurize the room, right?"
"Damn it. All right. I'll take it out myself. I'm taking it out," Jackson's said.
April and Bailey walked over to Link; "What is he doing?"
"He is taking ex-fix out," Bailey said.
"I've stabilize it later," Link said.
"The ex-fix is holding the entire leg together," Schmitt said.
"She's not gonna have a leg if she's dead, Schmitt," Jackson said. "Give me a wrench. Something like a wrench. Think. Clamp."
Meredith and Jenna were in the OR busy doing an biopsy on Cece
"Is she in rejection again?"
"The path results will let us know for certain, but she is in congestive heart failure," Jenna said. "Having two non-functioning kidneys is not making anything easier."
"Damn it. She's not gonna make it," Meredith said.
"It's just a biopsy," Jenna said.
"I know, but she's not gonna get a third heart while she's in kidney failure. I think we both know that," Meredith said.
"Are you upset because you wanted to hire her?" Jenna joked.
"No! I'm upset because she's dedicated her whole life to helping people find love," Meredith said. "You know she's got like an 85% success rate. She's an expert in her field. She's like a UNOS of love. It's got to be worth something."
"How did you interview go?" Jenna asked?
"I don't think I'm going to get the job," Meredith said.
"That bad was it?"
Down at the hyperbaric chamber the alarms were blaring and Nisha started to go into V-Fib.
"All right, start CPR. Let's flip her on her back. All right, give me one of epi. All right, guys, on my count," Jackson said.
On the count of three the doctors turned Nisha on her back and Jackson started doing CPR.
"And we need the paddles," Schmitt said.
"We don't have them," Dr. Knox said.
"What? Why?" Schmitt asked.
"No electricity," Knox said.
Jackson's continued giving Nisha CPR and kept telling her to stay alive. Minutes past by while Jackson continued doing CPR.
"How much epi are the on now?" April asked.
"7 rounds," Bailey replied.
"She is gone," April said.
"Come on Nisha," Jackson begged
"Dr. Avery."
Jackson stopped doing CPR and Nisha flatlined.
"I need out of here," Jackson said.
"Are you gonna call time of...?"
"Time of death, 18:21," Jackson said. "I need out."
"Dr. Avery, we need to wait until the room is completely pressurized," Schmitt said.
"Open the door. Open it!" Jackson shouted.
"You'll put yourself at extreme risk!" Schmitt said.
"No! Open the door and let me out! Now!"
Everyone outside the chamber took a step back. Helm came walking in the basement.
"I'm here for an update on Nisha," she said.
Nobody said anything, they looked at Helm with sad expressions on her faces and Helm knew what it meant.
Meredith was in Cece's room and had the to tell her the bad news about Nisha.
"So, my bad hearts gave me bad kidneys which gave me a bad heart again," Cece said. "Do I go back on the list?"
"We put in an internal defibrillator to keep your heart from misfiring, but, yes, we will put you back on the list for both organs," Jenna said.
"Cece, the wait may be longer than it was before. It can be extremely difficult to find," Meredith said.
"How's Nisha? Is she out?" Cece asked.
"Uh, her injuries were severe, and they caused an infection that spread rapidly. So sorry. She didn't make it," Meredith said.
"I don't want it. I don't want another heart," Cece said.
"Cece..."
"I killed that girl," Cece said as her voice broke. "That poor baby girl."
"Cece."
"Just... go. Just... just leave me alone," Cece said.
Cece continued crying as Meredith and Jenna left her room.
Jackson sat down on the floor with an oxygen mask in his hand, he started down at Nisha's corpse.
After another long day, all the doctors were gathered in the hall and Bailey was at the stairs.
"May I have your attention please? I would like to hereby announce that Alex Karev will be Interim Chief."
"What, but he didn't even enter the race for that," Amelia said.
Bailey ignored Amelia's comment; "And also, Owen Hunt will be going on leave and his position as Head of Trauma will be taken over by Dr. Kepner."
"Congratulations April."
After Bailey's announcement, Arizona, Tom and Kyle walked down the hall on their way out.
"What a day," Kyle said.
"You can say that again, I feel sorry for Samantha and the situation she's in," Arizona said.
"This is not easy for her," Kyle said.
"You did well Dr. Nolan, you were excellent," Tom said.
"Thank you Dr..., Sensei," Kyle said.
"You're welcome Kyle-san," Tom said. "I'm going to Joe's, you guys in? I'm buying."
I'll come with you," Kyle said.
"Dr. Robbins?"
"After today, I could sure use a wine right now," Arizona said.
Arizona, Tom and Kyle left the hospital and the three of them headed for Joe's.
Alex sat on the bench outside the hospital, Meredith walked over and sat down next to him.
"Congratulations," Meredith said.
"Thank you," Alex said.
"I'm sure you'll be a good Chief," Meredith said.
"Thanks for believing in me," Alex said.
"No problem I always will," Meredith said. "See you tomorrow Interim Chief Karev."
Next time: It's Alex's first day as Interim Chief. It's also April's first day as Head of Trauma and also gets some bad news. The interns begin their second year of internship and are joined by a new colleague.
