|PROLOGUE

"Sasuke!"

Naruto stared at the bone sticking out of his friend's leg. This wasn't supposed to happen! He was just about to throw Black Zetsu back to his mommy and end the war. Kaguya was beaten. They beat her! Sealed her away!

So why was Sasuke dying? Naruto dropped Black Zetsu and took a step forward as the bone started to crumble to dust. He had to do something. Sasuke couldn't end up like Obito.

Two more bones shot out from the deformed blob Kaguya had become. Naruto was forced to abandon his run to Sasuke and dive out of the way, rolling across the ground.

When he looked up again, the bone in Sasuke's leg was gone and his knee had started to crumble. "Naruto?" Sakura's voice came from behind him.

Naruto twisted around. His heart plummeted as he saw the bone sticking out of her stomach. Next to her, Kakashi was kneeling on the floor, his hands gripping a bone that was stuck in his shoulder.

Kaguya hadn't been aiming for him.

"Naruto!" Sasuke shouted. "Kill me!"

"What?" Naruto looked back at Sasuke. Black Zetsu had taken over half his body. Why was everything going so wrong?

Sasuke's arms and fingers moved stiffly as he weaved signs for a Jutsu.

"I'm not in control so kill me!"

Naruto hesitated. Kill Sasuke? He had spent three years training so he could drag him back to the Leaf Village alive. It had been a promise of a lifetime.

Under Black Zetsu's control, Sasuke's clapped his hands together. Naruto rushed forward and grabbed Sasuke by the shoulders. "I'm sorry," he said and then he threw Sasuke toward Kaguya.

Sasuke looked resigned to his fate, but Black Zetsu laughed. And he kept laughing all the way up until a block of earth slammed into his face.

"Summoning Jutsu!"

Naruto blinked as he suddenly went from Kaguya's dimension to standing on the battlefield where he fought Obito and Madara. The Sage of Six Paths was levitating in front of him, looking down at him with pity in his eyes. Naruto frowned and he glanced around at the reanimated Hokage. None of them could meet his eyes.

"Why didn't you bring Sakura and Kakashi-sensei back?"

Hagoromo exhaled deeply. "You know why, Naruto."

Naruto clenched his fists. "I could have saved them. With my powers, I could have—"

"Done nothing!" Hagoromo said, sharply. "My mother's All-Killing Ash Bones are absolute. When her bones pierce a living organism, the bone and target start to deteriorate at a molecular level, disintegrating the victim and reducing their bodies to nothing more than a pile of ash."

Naruto glared at the Sage of Six Paths. "What am I supposed to tell everyone?" he demanded. "We've already lost so much!"

"Naruto—" Hiruzen said, stepping forward.

"Kaguya killed nearly everyone under the Infinite Tsukuyomi."

Hashirama and Hiruzen glared at the Second Hokage. "That was too blunt, Tobirama." the First Hokage said.

The Second Hokage ignored him. "I could sense what was happening from here. All of the shinobi who fought with us are dead."

"You're lying," Naruto said, shaking his head. "You have to be. I can't be the last person alive!"

"There are still people alive. You and Sasuke sealed my mother away before she could absorb everyone's Chakra." Hagoromo explained, and hope bloomed in Naruto's heart.

Only to be crushed.

"She started with the strongest," Hagoromo said. "The people with the most Chakra were absorbed first."

"W—who survived?" Naruto stuttered, afraid to even ask. No matter who was still alive, he wasn't going to like the answer.

"Only civilians were spared. People with the bare minimum amount of Chakra in their body."

Tears welled up in Naruto's eyes. All of his friends were dead. Every shinobi he had ever met was dead too. All the people he'd fought with...gone.

"This was my mother's revenge for being sealed away again."

Hagoromo looked up at the moon hanging in the sky.

"Today is the end of the Shinobi Era."

Way out on the high seas where the blue of the sky stretches forever, Naruto Uzumaki opened his eyes. What a strange time to have that dream, he thought, squinting against the bright sun.

After the war, he used to dream about those final moments every night. In fact, during his first life, Naruto dreamed about the end of the war at least once a week.

Now, after having died and been reborn so many times he had long forgotten how many, it had become easier for Naruto to live with his failure. Slowly, over time, he managed to move on.

So why am I dreaming about the war now? he wondered with increasing frustration. The Fourth Shinobi War ended over a thousand years ago.

Naruto sat up on the small deck of his boat, and he immediately saw the black dot on the horizon. He lifted his hand to shade his eyes. A decent-sized schooner cut cleanly through the sea.

Within a few minutes, the ship was close enough for him to make out the details. Atop the ship flew a flag emblazoned with the image of a skull and crossbones. Directly in the center of its bony face was a large, red clown nose.

Standing at the stern of the ship, Naruto saw three unkempt and nasty-looking pirates hunched over a large trunk. Their cruel laughter rang out over the water as they pulled glittering gems from the trunk, allowing the gems to sparkle in the sunlight and letting strands of priceless jewels spill from their grasp.

"Captain Buggy will be pleased with this haul!" they laughed.

Just then, one of the pirates caught sight of him.

"It looks like today is our lucky day!" He pointed off in the distance at Naruto's small fishing vessel. "Let's make a raid!"

Naruto lowered his hand. That's a good-looking ship, he thought. His boat was a tiny thing, little more than a fancy fishing vessel. The name BARNACLE was painted gaudily across the stern, and while she was seaworthy and her sails in good shape the Barnacle would never have been able to catch up to a schooner.

Lucky for him, Naruto didn't have to. The pirates—thinking he was an easy mark—were coming to him!

Sitting down on the deck, he bent over the edge of the boat and let his hand hang limply in the water. The pirates brought their ship up alongside his boat.

"Are you alive?" prodded one of the pirates.

Naruto lifted his head, opening his eyes in amazement. "Oh!" he said in a grateful voice. "Am I dreaming or have I been rescued?"

The pirates laughed.

"Could you spare some water? I haven't had a drop in three days." Naruto asked, then he gestured to the Barnacle's small cabin. "If you want my gold, take it. But please, I need water."

"Of course! It'd be our plunder— I mean, pleasure!" said a pirate leading the other two aboard the little boat.

"Yes, our treasure—I mean, pleasure!" echoed another pirate.

Naruto rolled his eyes as the three greedy pirates raided his cabin, forgetting all about him. They heard nothing but the gentle lapping of the water and the sound of their own laughter as they rifled through the contents of the cabin.

In no time they were cursing instead of laughing.

"Where's the gold?"

Before they could even begin to realize how they'd been tricked, Naruto was calling out to them from their ship. "Take care of the Barnacle for me!" he shouted. "She's been a good ship!"

When the three pirates turned to attack him, they saw him standing on the deck of their schooner, sailing away from the Barnacle.

|NARUTOxONE PIECE|

Early the next morning, a thin tan-and-green line appeared on the horizon. As the sun slowly brightened the sky, the line grew larger. Soon, Naruto's destination came into perfect view.

Naruto steered the helm of his ship straight toward the island. As he got closer to the island, he shielded his eyes from the sun to get a better look at Orange Town's port.

What the hell? Naruto lowered his hand, staring at the port in disbelief. There wasn't a single ship in the harbor? That was shocking because it was extremely odd for any working port in the world to not have a single ship anchored.

"If I'm their only customer, I bet I can expect a king's welcome!" Naruto grinned and raised the single sail on his schooner.

When he drifted into port, the kingly welcome didn't materialize. Not even a princely welcome. In fact, there was no welcome at all. Even as he tied his ship to the dock, no one appeared to demand a fee, write down his name, or try and sell him supplies.

As he walked into town, Naruto could feel the uncomfortable silence around him. "This place is too quiet," he muttered to himself.

Every dusty road in Orange Town seemed to be completely deserted.

Naruto wandered through the silent streets, staring at the vacant shops and homes. Something terrible must have happened here—but what? he wondered, trying to find anysign of why the people of Orange Town were gone.

There were no broken windows. No bullet holes. No scorch marks. A pirate or bandit raid would have left some kind of mark. Orange Town looked like every person who lived there had just vanished, leaving everything around them completely untouched.

As he walked past an abandoned shop, Naruto's back straightened and he sniffed the air. He was curious about what happened to Orange Town, but right now he had a more pressing issue.

His stomach gurgled loudly.

It had been days since he last ate.

Naruto pushed opened the door to the shop and found exactly what he needed. The shop was full of food.

"Wow! This is almost as good as finding buried treasure!" He started grabbing everything he could see. Barrels of apples, wheels of cheese, bread, fish, and meat!

I won't be going hungry at sea again anytime soon! Naruto cheered as he hauled the supplies back to his ship.

"BOO—OOO—OOM!

Everything exploded in lightning flashes and furious noise as a section of the deserted town was leveled. The blast was so staggering Naruto turned deaf and blind for at least as long as it took for the dust to settle.

By then, his ship was a half-sunken burning wreck.

Naruto dropped his supplies and watched in disbelief. This couldn't be happening, not now!

How was he supposed to get to Loguetown without a ship?

Naruto left his supplies lying in the street and stormed through the streets of Orange Town, searching for the person responsible for stranding him on the island. As he got further into town, the untarnished facade faded away.

There was destruction everywhere. Entire buildings had been turned into nothing but piles of rubble. Whoever's been destroying this town has been careful, Naruto thought. He hadn't been able to see any of the destruction from the port. Something he was sure was intentional.

Pirates had probably taken over the town and were using it to ambush anyone coming to Orange Town.

In the center of town, Naruto came across a strange fight between two people who must have eaten Devil Fruits.

A dark-haired boy wearing a straw hat had his arms stretched fifteen feet away from his body, and the man he was fighting was floating in the air. Or at least half of him was because the man's feet and legs were still on the ground.

Even stranger, the man seemed to have a giant red clown nose.

At any other time, Naruto might have been content to sit back and watch the fight. He always liked to see Devil Fruit powers in action before using his. But he wasn't waiting today.

While the two were busy fighting, Naruto blindsided them both.

"Dynamic Entry!" His feet slammed into their faces sending both flying down the street.

Naruto frowned as Straw Hat jumped right back to his feet.

"Hey! That was a dirty trick!" Straw Hat shouted, setting his straw hat back on his head. "And you hit your captain, stupid!"

"Red nose isn't my captain," Naruto said, glaring at the boy. "And you're one to talk about dirty tricks! Somebody over here destroyed my boat!"

"Who are you calling red nose?" Clown-nose screamed. "I'm Buggy the Clown, you blonde bastard! Now die! Bara Bara Flashy Union!"

Naruto blinked as Buggy's floating parts snapped back to his body. Some of them anyway.

"What happened to my body!" Buggy shouted, looking down at his small body. Somehow, his hands were connected directly to his head.

"Looking for these?"

Naruto turned around and saw an orange-haired girl. She was wearing a white and blue striped shirt and an orange mini-skirt. His eyes flicked down to her bare legs, before settling on the bundle of human body parts she was holding.

"Good job, Nami!" Straw Hat threw his arms back. "Leave the rest to me!"

"Wait!" Buggy pleaded, holding his hands up. "Just hold on!"

"Gomu Gomu no Bazooka!" Straw Hat's arms shot forward and slammed into Buggy's body.

Naruto watched as Buggy went flying. The clown pirate flew so far that he eventually turned into a small black dot...then finally disappeared from view entirely.

Straw Hat hits pretty hard, Naruto thought, eyeing the dark-haired teen warily. You had to have some serious power to send anything flying like that.

"I win!" Straw Hat cheered. "You'll join my crew now, right?"

The orange-haired girl—whose name was apparently Nami—smiled and looked down at the bag of treasure at her feet. "For the time being. It looks like I'll make a fortune if I stick with you guys."

Naruto narrowed his eyes. "So you two are a team?"

"You're still here?" Straw Hat asked, pouting like a child. "What do you want?"

"I want to kick the crap out of whoever blew up my ship!"

Loguetown was so close. All he had to do was stock his ship with supplies and set sail.

"That wasn't us!" Nami pointed in the direction Buggy went flying. "It was Buggy shooting his Buggy Balls!"

"Why would Buggy destroy his own ship?" Naruto challenged. The ship he 'commandeered' had been flying a pirate flag that had crossbones with a red nose. A nose just like Buggy's.

Straw Hat gasped. "You liar! You are a part of red nose's crew!" he shouted and slung his arms back.

"Ninpo: Substitution no Jutsu!" Naruto switched places with a broken log from the rubble behind Straw Hat.

The log shattered into a thousand little splinters.

Naruto held out his hand, his palm facing Straw Hat's chest. "Ninpo: Paralysis no Jutsu!"

Straw Hat gasped as he froze in place. "Why can't I move!" he shouted, struggling against the invisible hold on his body.

Nami stepped in front of her new captain, hoping to stop a second fight from breaking out.

"Look, this is all just a big misunderstanding, okay?" she said, smiling sweetly. "Buggy really was the one who destroyed your boat. He just wasn't aiming for you. He was trying to shoot us with one of his Buggy Balls, and Luffy deflected the shot."

"Are you telling me my ship was destroyed by accident?"

Straw Hat—whose name was Luffy— nodded as best he could. "Yes," he answered honestly.

Naruto groaned and released his Paralysis Jutsu. "Dammit! I have places to be!" he shouted, mostly to himself.

His boat being destroyed was a setback, but learning it had been destroyed by accident? That was a tough pill to swallow.

"Where are you going?" Luffy asked, dusting off his red vest. "You can sail with us?"

Nami gasped and smacked him over the head. "Don't just offer something like that to a stranger!" she screamed.

Luffy ignored her and grinned at Naruto. "I'm Monkey D. Luffy."

Monkey D. Naruto knew that name. "Uzumaki Naruto," he introduced himself. And then he asked, "Are you related to Garp?"

"You know my Gramps?" Luffy looked terrified and started looking around. "He's not here, right?"

"I don't know him personally, but there isn't a pirate sailing the Grand Line that hasn't heard about the Marine Hero: Garp the Fist."

Nami glared at Naruto. "So, you're a pirate too?"

Before he could answer, Naruto stepped back as Straw Hat invaded his personal space. "You've been to the Grand Line?" Luffy asked, their noses practically touching.

"I was born in the Grand Line," Naruto answered, pushing Luffy away. He looked at Nami to answer her question. "And yes, I am a pirate."

"Well, don't even think about being King of the Pirates," Luffy grinned and pointed at himself. "That title is mine!"

"Never even crossed my mind," Naruto said, shrugging the idea off. What did he need to be King of the Pirates for? That wouldn't help him, or his country. Even if he did find the One Piece and offered it to Kaido, you could never stop conflict with appeasement.

Luffy nodded. "Good," he spoke solemnly. "That means you can join my crew."

"I'm not joining your crew," Naruto replied, causing Luffy to deflate. "I have my own crew."

Luffy pouted and made a show of looking around. "I don't see anyone."

Naruto rolled his eyes. "They aren't here. We got separated and agreed to meet at Loguetown," he explained. "From there, we're going to set sail for the Grand Line."

"What happened here!"

An angry mob of townspeople armed with pitchforks, metal pipes, and the occasional kitchen knife was marching toward them.

They look pissed, Naruto thought as Luffy ignored the approaching mob. He went over to an unconscious green-haired man and slapped him awake.

"Hey, Zoro! Wake up!"

Zoro opened his eyes and sat up. His white shirt was soaked red from the open wound on his side. "Did you take care of things?" he asked, yawning.

"Yeah, and I got the map and treasure." Luffy grinned. "Nami's even agreed to be our navigator, plus I met this really strong guy and he's going to join the crew!"

Before Naruto could tell Luffy that he was definitely not joining his crew, the townspeople started shouting again.

"Mayor! Are you hurt!"

"It was those lousy Buggy pirates!"

Luffy lifted Zoro onto his shoulders. "No, it wasn't...I knocked the old man out!" he announced.

"You did this to our Mayor!"

"Who are you?"

Luffy looked at the townspeople like they were the stupid ones for even asking that question and said, "We're pirates."

Why would he say that? Naruto shook his head as the mob cried out for blood. Their blood.

"Get them!"

Luffy took off running towards the port. "Let's run away!"

Naruto followed suit. As they cut through back alleys and side streets, he took one of the bags of treasure from Nami's hands. "If you don't speed up, the mobs going to catch you," he told her.

"This is your fault!" Nami screamed at Luffy. "Why do you always have to complicate things?"

Luffy glanced behind him at the mob. "These are good people," he said, smiling. "They're all worked up because they love their mayor."

"Yeah, well those good people are going to kill us if they catch up," Naruto jumped over a small white dog. "Huh?"

The dog started barking at the mob...and instead of stampeding over the small animal, they all stopped.

When they finally got to the port, Naruto stared at the two ships they would be setting sail in. They were both smaller than the boat he'd stolen!

Luffy took the bag of treasure from his arms and jumped into a small rowboat. "Let's go, everyone" he cheered. "It's time to set sail!"
