There are so many links between UFO and Space 1999, and they were implied in the Big Finish Space 1999 series. I just wanted to play around with a reality where the aliens technology played a massive part in the creation of an alternate reality with the characters of Space 1999.

This is a one-shot series, not really in order, but you'll see the differences later on.

Enjoy.

The UFO

Commander Straker wished he could take a deep breath and relax, but he knew he couldn't afford to look human or relaxed in the middle of a battle. This had been one of the largest and most stressful battles of the entire war between SHADO and the UFOs and the mysterious aliens who operated them. The aliens had been testing SHADO's defence net for some time, poking and prodding, sending UFOs towards the moon and Earth, testing their resolve.

"Contact moonbase," Straker ordered as he pulled himself together. "Tell them to continue monitoring for UFOs."

"Yes, sir," Carter replied. Carter was relatively new, but he had shown himself to be highly efficient, likely from his RAF days. Suddenly he paused as he got a message from Moonbase itself. "Sir, Moonbase is already contacting us."

Straker closed his eyes. He knew what this was going to be. A damage report and a casualty list. SHADO had needed to break the bank on expanding their bases and operations, as the attacks became increasingly serious and their abilities to prevent anyone from knowing what was going on became strained, and the U.N had gotten the funding pushed through to expand Moonbase and give them access to new interceptor designs that could hold out in a fight longer and harder.

"What are they saying, Carter?"

"One moment, sir. I'm still getting the transmission," Carter held up a hand. "They're assessing the damage now, but the new inceptors held. They have reported….. I don't believe it."

"Well, get on with it, man!" Straker snapped.

"Sorry, sir. But the new interceptors and ground cannons have shot down….27 out of the 36 UFOs," Carter said with mounting excitement and glee.

Everyone in the SHADO control room gasped and even cheered at that news. Straker, while staggered, smiled at the news. The aliens had never sent such an unbelievably large force before, never. To have so many shot down was an achievement, but it was clear that the aliens would have sent a large fleet anyway, because of how frequent the attacks were, and how many were sent at any time.

"27?" Alec Freeman repeated. "That will certainly give them time to think again."

"Yeah, but we have to keep going on, they're going to do something like this again soon," Straker allowed himself to briefly let loose some of his feelings, "the UFOs are coming here more frequently, and they've sent larger, more powerful ships at the same time."

Freeman sighed. The problem with Straker sometimes was he was so pessimistic, but he knew Straker had to be that way.

"Gentlemen, hate to interrupt," Carter said suddenly as he received a new message from Moonbase, "Moonbase is reporting shooting down at least four of the UFOs," he said for the benefit of the increasingly amazed crew. "They've secured the craft, awaiting orders."

"A UFO?"

"They've captured one."

"That means the turning point in the war."

Mutters from the rest of the control room grew louder and louder. Straker let them talk, as he mused about the possibilities. For years now SHADO had tried and failed to steal and salvage UFOs because of how advanced the aliens were. SHADO were only just capable of shooting down the UFOs, but the aliens technology was a wide gulf away from human technology, and besides there were so many things the aliens' technology could give them.

Their spacesuits and weapons had already given them knowledge of new metals and plastics, which had done wonders for material science; the green oxygenated liquid within the spacesuits which took the role of oxygen within the suits, dyed as its was, had become a treasure trove for scientists looking into life support technology.

But it wasn't enough.

The UFOs were a treasure trove of technology; the UFOs were more maneoverable than the spacecraft SHADO and indeed Earth used, and while space exploration had received a boon, what with space plane technology but the technology was still in its infancy. The aliens likely had the power to cross the light barrier. They had some kind of power over time. Their engine technology alone likely allow interplanetary travel before researching ways into faster-than-light could allow them to go beyond the solar system.

Straker was an experienced pilot, and he could already picture such expeditions, and he pushed thoughts of the weapons and computer technologies that the ships likely had.

"Have a team of scientists and engineers travel to the moon to take possession of the UFO," he ordered, effectively silencing everyone. "I want the team to make use of Moonbase's resources and to strip the UFO there; we all know the UFOs explode in our atmosphere, I don't want that to happen again. Make sure the team are given top priority, Alec. I'm making you personally responsible for the security arrangements of the UFO."

"Right," Freeman read between the lines, knowing if anything happened to the UFO, his head would be on the block. He didn't blame his old friend for that decision since everyone knew they had the priority to take possession of a UFO.

"Alec, strip that ship bare. Every last nut and bolt, I want it stripped, and make sure that that Moonbase keep on shooting down the UFOs and capture them, we cannot depend on just one ship," Straker ordered.

"Okay," Alec nodded already preparing himself for the order. "While I'm there, I can take a look at what made it possible to bring down the UFO and make it possible to do it again."

"Good idea. And while you're at it, I want you to take a look at the defences and see what can be done to make them better in the long run," Straker said.

"Yeah. Ed," Freeman rarely uttered Straker's name in public, but he was serious this time. "I think we should talk to Henderson," he paused when he saw the grimace on Straker's face and shared his commiserations as Henderson was a difficult man to speak to even though Henderson was one of the driving forces to making SHADO possible; the old man had become a politician, caring more about the money than anything else. "I know, but we can't keep depending on Moonbase; we might need some kind of satellite that's equipped with weapons."

Straker had often wanted such weapons to be dotted around the system, but Henderson's petty buddies refused. "I'll see what I can do, but maybe this might help. Just make sure we get research into the UFOs and how they work."
