TBB - You needed me (Crosshair/Mayday) (poem)
By Gun Roswell
Preface
Is it… really you? Or am I just, dreaming once again?
Are you still here, with me?
Can you still stay here, with me, for a while at least?

Part of the Clone Poems / Crosshair/Mayday Series
Is it… really you? Or am I just, dreaming once again?
'Dreams, nightmares, fantasies, call them what you want, I will still have them of you.'
Crosshair, was sedated. Heavily so. His dreams all too vivid for his tastes. Was it all real or something else? A fantasy concocted by a lonely mind trying to find something to latch onto? Or was it happening somewhere, out of the realm of reality, some kind of fantasy? Or was it the worst case scenario for Crosshair after all. Him dying while doing the right thing?
"Can you hear me?"
"Yes."
"Can you see me?"
"No."
"I am right here, by your side."
A pause.
"Mayday."
"Yes sweetheart, it's me."
Another pause.
"Where am I?"
"Restrained. On a bio bed. They've got you this time. Got you good."
"How?"
"You died."
"So did you."
"Maybe."
"How are you here then? If I am dead and you are… something else?"
"You needed me."
"Is that all that it took?"
"Yes. What else did you think?"
Silence
"I've missed you."
"I know."
"You felt me missing you? Is that the reason you are here?"
"I did."
"That's what's brought you here? To this, place, whatever it is?"
"Yes. You sound, surprised?"
"I am."
"Why?"
"I didn't think… that you would be…"
"Well, you were wrong. And I am here now."
"Simple as that?"
"Simple, as that."
Are you still here, with me?
'Worried to leave, afraid to stay, what is there left then, as an emotion to feel?'
Crosshair is confused. Not really sure whether dead or alive, dreaming or loosing his mind. "May? You still here? I am… lonely… so lonely without you. Please respond."
Silence. "Mayday?"
More silence.
"Guess you decided to leave after all."
Pause. But then…
"No Cross, I'm still here. It's difficult, sometimes, to remain. It takes… a lot of effort."
"So, you really are dead then?"
"Am I? What is death anyway? A state of the mind created by those who cannot fathom the greater lines of life?"
Soft chuckle.
"Now you're getting all philosophical on me."
"Heh, guess I am."
"But you do try… I mean hang around. Right?"
"Yeah, Cross, I do. Like I said, I am here for you."
"Because I was missing… you?"
"Yeah, among other things."
"So, when I die, I will go where you are?"
"You did die. But… it's… that''s not what you are. Right now anyway."
"Oh?"
"Yeah."
"So, I could die though."
"Maybe. Depends."
"On what exactly."
"Many things. Most of all, your old squad."
Silence.
"I've told you. They're gone."
"You lied."
"So? They're gone. To me at least."
"But they are all still looking for you."
"No. They are not. I told them to go hide."
"Unwise."
"Perhaps. But they need to take care of themselves, not find me."
"You know Cross, you are quite the stubborn bastard aren't you."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. But, that is why I like you."
"You do?"
"Yeah, why'd think I'm still here?"
"Because, you like me."
"Yeah Cross. I like you. Plenty."
"Good."
"Yeah, it is."
"So, stay for a while?"
"I will, trust me on that."
"I will."
Can you still stay here, with me, for a while at least?
'I would never want to lose you, not even to death itself.'
Death, life, things that nature. Is it really all an illusion, life that is? A construct of some higher function? Crosshair is so, so confused. "Mayday? You still here?"
"Yeah Crosshair, I'm still here. Had to step away for a moment, but I am still, here."
"Do you know what's going on?"
Silence.
"May?"
"Yeah, Cross. I… um… they're coming here… soon too."
"Who is?"
"The scientists. Dr Hemlock."
"Oh."
"Yeah."
Silence.
"You've gotta hold on Cross. Don't give up."
"Easier said than done."
"Guess it is. But I know you are strong. Like on Barton-4."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah you are. My hero for sure!"
Chuckles.
"It was nuttin'. He had it coming ya know."
"I know. But still. What you did for me…"
"So, you will watch over me when those doctors get in here then?"
"I promise I will. But you have to hang on. The others are coming… soon."
"The others?"
"Your Batch."
"No."
"Yes, Cross. They are close."
"Why?"
"Because they want you back. You're their family."
"Simple as that?"
"Simple, as that."
"Will you hang here with me even if they come for me?"
"Yeah, Cross, I will be here with you, always."
"You promise me that?"
"Yeah, Cross, I promise. To be here for you for ever and a day."
"That's a long time."
"I agree. But you're worth it."
"Good. I am glad…"
"Me too, Cross. Me too."
Pause.
"… and so are you. Worth all of it."
