Who could have know that the most important moment of his life would start with the phrase, "Eat this," before a hair was consumed. If you told him before that day, he'd never believe you. But there Izuku Midoriya stood, on a recently cleaned beach with his hero, All Might. Chewing. And then realizing that chewing hair was a terrible idea.
Eventually, he got the hair down and it wasn't the worst thing he had ever eaten. Once Kacchan had forced Iuzku to have a bite of his lunch at school, and that was so spicy that Izuku swore he couldn't taste anything for a week.
But there he was, on the day of the UA Entrance exam, chilling with his mentor and eating hair. A regular day in the life of Izuku Midoriya. The middle schooler rather wished that All Might would give him a little more guidance on how to use his new power more than, "Clench your butt cheeks kid, and yell SMASH from the depths of your heart!"
Izuku wondered how helpful he'd find that advice.
Later in the day, once he'd been cleaned up from his time at the beach and he was on his way to UA, he felt something. His stomach rumbled a little and he let out a belch that caused the others on the train with him to state in horror, astonishment, or in one small child's case, uncontrollable laughter. His face turned red and he apologized quietly, hoping that more of those would not be on the way, with the exam starting soon.
Thankfully his stomach felt settled after that, and he also felt something… It was subtle but there was the feeling static all around him. Like he was standing above the tree line at the start of a lightning storm and needed to move to safe ground. Except the lightning was him. Izuku knew he needed to get out of his head if he wanted to do well on the exam.
He felt like he had plenty of time to get to UA, the walk from the station was less than 20 minutes and then he had to check in. Looking at his phone he realized that time had gotten away from him and he started to move quicker towards UA.
And suddenly the world stretched out around him and he was at the gates. A tall boy was glaring at him. "You there, did you just use your quirks to get to this prestigious exam on time? That is highly inappropriate! Not to mention potentially illegal!"
The boy yelling at him had dark blue hair and a stern-looking face. "Um, I didn't mean to? I was just in a rush. I don't think I was that fast though," Izuku said, lying.
Looking taken aback the other boy said, "Oh, I must have not seen you walk up. I understand what it is to have a speed quirk and lose focus sometimes myself. My humblest apologies." He bowed low. Izuku noticed exhaust pipes coming out of the boy's legs. An interesting quirk, for sure. Must be hard to shop for pants though.
"It's okay. I'm pretty nervous so maybe I was walking faster than I meant to," Izuku mumbled.
"Very well. We should head in, we don't want to be late!" The other boy turned and sped into the school. Izuku looked at his phone again and realized he had made the twenty-minute trek to UA in less than two, conversation with the blue-haired boy included. He'd be plenty early... And he'd need to be sure to be more careful in the future. Unless he was late, of course.
After being saved from falling on his face by a kind girl, Izuku took the written exam. It was easier than he was expecting, all material that he was comfortable with. He'd always been smart, even if his middle school teachers hadn't wanted to admit that about a quirkless student. But this seemed easier for him, and he wondered if One For All impacted his intelligence at all.
In the middle of the exam, the written exam, Izuku let out another belch, this one caused the windows in the room to rattle and those desks closest to him to physically be moved away from him. He blushed, embarrassed. "Sorry, must be something I ate."
The proctor, a man dressed in black with a scarf looked like he couldn't care less. Instead, he just looked up from the sleeping bag he had been resting in all exam, then put his head down, turned over, and seemingly fell asleep. The students glanced around and went back to work. Izuku was glad he was no longer the strangest person in the room. Potentially.
Finishing his exam earlier than anyone else in his testing room was a little nerve-racking, but Izuku had already gone over his answers several times to make sure they were accurate. Time was called shortly thereafter and they were dismissed to an auditorium by the proctor.
The rules of the practical exam were gone over by Present Mic, it was robots. Izuku had been again called out by the same blue-haired boy, this time for mumbling. Izuku didn't think he'd been that loud. He was also sitting next to Kacchan which was always a joy. Thankfully people from the same middle school would be in different arenas so Izuku would be safe from his 'friend.'
Getting out of his bus, Izuku saw the girl who had saved him from falling earlier and moved to go talk to her while they waited. The blue-haired boy stopped Izuku and accused him of trying to distract his competition.
Having had enough, Izuku snapped, "The only one distracting students seems to be you."
And at that moment, Present Mic screamed go. Izuku jumped, startled, and was suddenly into the city. He felt a little guilty for potentially blasting the other kids with displaced air. Izuku thought it must have looked pretty cool, but was more concerned on how to stop.
Thankfully he landed right on top of a 3 pointer, destroying it. He was in the middle of a swarm of robots of different point values, all of them turning towards him. This was it. He put on his biggest All Might smile and remembered his mentor's words from earlier and clenched his butt cheeks, punched the air and screamed, "SMASH!"
All the robots in front of his punch, maybe 10, were completely obliterated. Izuku could not even see scraps left from where they had been. There was moderate property damage but nothing that couldn't be fixed. It also started raining which Izuku wanted to nerd out about because omigosh he changed the weather with a punch just like All Might. So cool. But this was not the time he had robots to slay. He turned around because there were still a few robots left that were behind his first punch.
Another smash and they were taken care of, the rain stopped with the second punch. Izuku realized after that punch that he could control the amount of force coming out of his smashes. He figured that his first and second smashes were about 100%. He ran forward, unsure of how many points he'd need to get into UA, and used less power on consecutive smashes.
Izuku had no idea how many points he had. He'd destroyed somewhere around 40 robots though, all he needed was about 10% to easily stomp them. He'd even stopped screaming smash every time he punched, his throat was sore. He kept his best All Might smile up the whole time. Izuku felt like he understood All Might better than he did before, using his power. How could you not smile when you had this kind of power at your beck and call? He'd even been hit by a few projectiles from the robots, but they did no damage, but his shirt was singed. Izuku realized that meant he got not only All Might's strength but also his durability.
However, he did notice that yelling, 'Smash,' seemed to give his punches a bit extra oomph. Lower percentages also kept collateral damage down compared to his first two smashes and did not change the weather. Thankfully there had been no other examinees around when he had landed or it could have been bad. Now though he felt like he could fight near other people if needed because he had more control over his percentages.
He found he was much faster than he expected. He probably should have know, what with his morning commute being what it was. When rushing from one pack of robots to the next he had the idea to spread One For All throughout his entire body, causing green-white lighting to spark around him. This allowed him both speed and strength. He started it at 100% but that felt way overpowered, with his footsteps leaving literal cracks in the pavement and a bit of a hole where he jumped to avoid a robot's blast. Settling at a comfortable 40% of what he was already calling Full Cowl in his head. He could run through robots and they'd be destroyed. No need to stop. This helped him rack up even more points.
Before long he heard Present Mic call the two-minute warning. He had moved back towards the main drag of the fake city, his original jump taking him to the far corner. He cleared out a portion of the city of robots single-handily. He felt the ground vibrate and wondered briefly if someone's earth quirk had gone out of control.
Then Izuku saw the mass of examinees running towards him, some screaming. All panicking. Curious, Izuku walked "upstream" and saw the Zero Pointer. It was several stories taller than the three-pointer, and Izuku now understood why Present Mic had said it was an obstacle to avoid.
He was turning to head towards the exit when he heard it. A cry for help. Scanning the area Izuku saw a girl buried under some rubble knocked loose by the zero pointer. He activated Full Cowl and rushed to her side, smiling what he hoped was a comforting smile. He lifted the rubble quickly, recognizing the girl who helped him earlier.
"Don't worry, I am here. Can you walk?"
The Zero Pointer was getting closer and closer. "I think my ankle is sprained."
Izuku looked at the robot and back to the girl still smiling, "Don't worry. I'll take care of this."
Izuku stood and thought about how he needed to get up higher. He moved away from the girl and bent his knees and jumped with 100% Full Cowl. It felt like he stopped ascending and began floating in front of the robot, right where he visualized. The robot locked on to him with its weapons but Izuku shot forward and hit the giant robot with a full-powered front kick. This caused the robot to lift off the ground and fly through the air. It landed outside the city walls. In pieces.
Izuku let go of full cowl, but kept the floating element of his power active and slowly descended to the ground. He landed next to the injured girl and encouraged her to climb onto his back so he could carry her out of the testing area, not noticing the look of awe one her face.
As they approached the gate, several other participants were watching them, probably because he had just yeeted a five-story half a mile with a kick, and wasn't even sweating, let alone inured. He might be intimidating now? Cool.
The exam ended and Recovery Girl came over and took care of the girl's injury. Izuku learned her name was Uraraka and he hoped they'd both get into the same class. She seemed to have significantly fewer points than he had, but that didn't mean anything. He was sure that Kacchan would have a fair few points. And a not-so-small part of him wanted to beat his old friend's score.
Bonus:
"Any standouts so far?" Present Mic asked as he joined the teacher after starting the kids off.
"One kid with explosions has been tearing through robots like nothing else. But the real standout is here." Midnight pushed a few buttons and highlighted a green-haired boy who was tearing through robots with no competitors around. "He jumped to a quiet corner of the city and went to town."
"It's irrational," Aizawa said. "Hs first few hits were much stronger than later ones, but they were overkill. They caused property damage and until he toned it down I thought he'd destroy the city."
"Now Shouta, he may not have known exactly how strong his quirk was. With power like that, where could he have tried it out? He'd have destroyed his neighborhood," Midnight said.
"The way he modulated his power so quickly was quite impressive. And oh look, he seems to have evolved his style right here," Nedzu said. They all looked and saw lighting dancing off his skin, speed, and power mixed into one.
"Why didn't he just use that from the beginning?" Aizawa asked. "He's acting like he just got his quirk today, and we're watching him experiment with it. Has he never used it before?"
"I don't know Shouta, I agree with Nemuri. Where the heck could the little listener have practiced with that kind of firepower? It would be like All Might at a quirk gym. There'd be no gym left when he was done." He paused. "No offense big guy."
All Might, in his skeletal form, was grinning as he watched the screens. "None taken. I think he's doing quite well regardless. He's getting the hang of his power even if he'd never really used it before today."
Nedzu looked at All Might for a moment and then smiled. "Well, there are more participants than just Izuku Midoriya. It's safe to say he has a place here, seeing as he has already taken out more robots than anyone ever has before. And we still have more than five minutes left."
For a few minutes, the teachers watched other students, the explosive blond was doing well, but not as well as Midoriya had been doing.
"And now we separate those with true heroic spirits from those with strong quirks. Release the zero pointers."
After a minute of chaos and almost everyone running away from the giant robots across all the fake cities, Thirteen said, "We need to watch that one, we may need to stop the zero pointer, there's a girl trapped."
"Let's give it a moment, I think something interesting might happen."
The cameras changed and the green-haired boy was back looking over to where the trapped girl was. Nedzu turned the sound on as the boy approached the trapped examinee.
"Don't worry, I am here. Can you walk?" He lifted the rubble off the girl as he said this. He was smiling, and it didn't look strained, but rather a bit maniacal.
The Zero Pointer continued its approach. "I think my ankle is sprained," she said.
Izuku looked at the robot and back to the girl smiling, "Don't worry. I'll take care of this."
The assembled teachers watched in silence as the boy jumped up and seemingly floated in front of the robot as it approached him. He shot forward, let out a mighty kick and the zero pointer went flying, landing in the grass outside the city.
The silence hung in the air as Nedzu was laughing maniacally and All Might chuckled.
"That boy has a dangerous amount of power," Aizawa said with a sigh. "He's going to be in my class, isn't he? And you'll probably give me that explosive blond and Endeavor's kid too."
Nedzu just kept laughing but Kan looked relieved. Everyone seemed a bit unnerved by the principal's laugh and no one seemed to notice All Might's proud smile as he watched his successor's One For All powered kick on repeat.
No one, that is except for Aizawa Shouta, who narrowed his eyes at the number one hero.
