Chapter 1

The explosion and smell of smoke caused a huge commotion in the streets of Savile Row. A pump wagon had come, bringing volunteers to put out the fire. After the fire was out, the crowd of onlookers thinned.

In the background, a tall, aristocratic young man watched from a distance while another questioned the crowd. The man gathering information came back and led the other away.

Nivens, the English name of the Prussian undercover bookseller, ordered tea for himself and his companion several blocks away.

"We missed our target. Phileas Fogg must have added water to the vase. He was injured in the blast," Nivens said to the colonel. "He recovers in his home. I do not understand that," the Prussian said in frustration. "He should have been killed."

"What of the woman?" Colonel Carl Clauswitz said.

"She was not at home," Nivens said, sour defeat marring his face. "Frau Fogg has left London. She is in Scotland, a pleasure trip. I was told where. If you wish, we can catch a train to Scotland this afternoon."

"I wish," the Colonel said. "These Foggs have more lives than a cat. Yet even a cat must die in time. We will go to Scotland and find Frau Fogg. The explosion will have warned Phileas Fogg of our target. He will go to protect his apprentice. When he does, we will strike out at both. Maybe even Rebecca Fogg will be available to be had?"

"We have no orders to kill Phileas and Rebecca Fogg," Nivens reminded Clauswitz.

"What are a few extra casualties in the process of gaining our aim?" Clauswitz said, dismissing him.

Nivens gave no reply, but worried at his superior's fervor in taking on more than ordered. The Foggs were an old, well-known enemy. Taking out the younger agent would make them angry, but he would leave this country when all was done, returning to his homeland for safety. Going after more seasoned agents, especially Phileas Fogg, would make this far more dangerous. Nivens was no coward, but he was no fool, either. What the colonel wanted to do would put them in greater danger.

Nivens looked at his companion over his teacup and saw the predatory glow in the colonel's eyes. He will not give up until all Foggs were no more.
