Anniversary
Lucy Heartfilia was walking back to her apartment, a shopping bag full of groceries and treats hanging from her right hand. Lucy used this as a challenge to balance herself on the stone barrier between the road and the lake, ignoring the sailor's warning to get off of the barrier. When she saw her apartment out of the corner of her eye, Lucy jumped off of the barrier and headed up the stairs. However, the second she opened the door, she captured the faint smell of fire, and rather than worry about the possibility of the building burning down, she sighed, realizing that her boyfriend, Natsu Dragneel, had snuck into her apartment for a surprise…again.
"Natsu, I love you, but if you burned ANYTHING in my apartment again, I'm going to make you wish you stayed home," Lucy grumbled as she stomped up the stairs, preparing to see something in her apartment burnt to a crisp thanks to Natsu's excitement. Granted, this was also Natsu's first romantic relationship, and he was excited about pretty much everything they did together, and she felt the same way since it was her first as well. But this habit of him getting overheated and burning things was starting to get on her nerves, especially with the Jewels that Lucy and Natsu had to pay to fix those burns.
By the time Lucy got to her apartment, she confirmed the smell of smoke was coming from the apartment, and took a deep breath before opening the door. However, when she opened the door, Lucy was surprised to see that her apartment was in perfect order. No overturned furniture, no burn marks on the wall, no overflowing bathroom, and no mess in the kitchen, it all looked like nobody was there. Lucy didn't relax just yet, as the scent of fire was still invading her nostrils, and when she turned around, she noticed that the smell was coming from her bedroom.
"There you are," Lucy whispered to herself before barging into her bedroom. However, when she got in there, Lucy saw Natsu on her bed, but nothing was burnt. Rather, Natsu had spelled out 'Happy Anniversary, Lucy' in fire above their bed, and the fire was even different colors, alternating between the colors seemingly every time she blinked.
"Oh! You're home early, Luce! Happy anniversary!" Natsu exclaimed with a cheeky grin, jumping on the bed to face a still-shocked Lucy. Lucy looked at the flaming words in amazement before finally smiling at Natsu, walking onto the bed, and hugging him.
"Awwww…you remembered!?"
"Of course I did, I've been training how to create some non-burning fire so that I could do this without destroying anything," Natsu responded, pointing up to the words made out of the fire. Lucy looked at Natsu, once again shocked at his explanation, as this explained why Natsu had seemingly been gone on missions longer than he usually was this past week. Lucy tackled Natsu down with a hug, nuzzling her cheek on his chest as the two lay down in bed, there being no sound between the two of them except their breathing.
"Thanks, Natsu," Lucy said, her eyes glancing up at the flaming words above them, comfortably warming up the room. Natsu responded with his usual big smile before planting a kiss on her cheek.
"Anytime, Luce."
