The carriage pulled to a halt. Janner and Sara sat up.
"Why's the carriage stopped?" Leeli asked.
"I'll ask." Janner said, slipping out of the door of the carriage. After a few moments, he quickly slipped back in.
"The guards said that they spotted some carriage robbers down the road. We're near one of the soldier stations, so we can stay there until it's safe enough to leave."
"Well, we'd best get movin'." Maraly said. Once everyone had slipped out of the carriage, they grabbed their satchels.
"So, where's the station?" Leeli asked.
Janner went to go to the guards, but they were gone!
"Somethings not right. The guards are gone, robbers were spotted, and there's no station here!" Janner said. As he said so, an arrow whizzed through the air, and passed right next to Kalmer.
And then it hit Janner. "It's an assassination attempt! Kal! Get back in the carriage!" Kalmer jumped into the carriage, and helped Leeli get inside. Arrows whizzed everywhere, striking the side of the carriage. Sara, Maraly, and Janner pulled out their weapons. The horses that were hitched up to the carriage neighed and somehow unhitched themselves from the carriage. They ran off into the nearby forest, where the arrows were coming from.
The royal family had nowhere to hide, nowhere to go.
