Also, this chapter is pretty much a mix of feelsy stuff and fluff.
After a few days, Sara slowly started to feel a little more comfortable going to places alone.
Quite opposite, Janner did not.
No matter how much Sara would protest that he needed to be with Kal, Janner would shake his head and stay with her.
Deep down, Sara was enjoying the attention from him.
They spent most days totally together, going from place to place in Rysentown, or staying at the Castle, or going to explore the Annieran forest. It honestly helped their bond grow stronger.
But deep down, Janner still worried about Matthew.
But this isn't the last time you'll see me.
Those words that Matthew last said to Janner haunted his mind. He started to become more protective of Sara, even towards his own family, he refused to let her go anywhere alone (except to the bathroom and to change clothes, obviously), his trust for people slowly grew smaller.
Sara noticed the change that had come over Janner, but she remained silent.
For now.
After a couple weeks, she grew tired of it, and worried for him, and so she told him.
"You've been acting different." She said abruptly, one day.
"How?" Janner asked.
Sara sighed. "You don't seem to trust anyone anymore. You're way too protective. You've barely even seen your family these last two weeks!"
Janner sighed. "For obvious reasons!"
"Janner, I get it, you're worried, but this isn't how we should go about it. He's harming you now and you haven't even seen him!"
"But I still hear his words!" Janner explained, tears brimming his eyes. "His words haunt me day and night, how he was going to come back. Do you know what that feels like, worrying constantly that the most important thing in your life that practically keeps me alive and sane, that the person that I love most in this world, is possibly going to get taken away? And I have no idea when or where or how?"
Sara shook her head and looked down. "No," she said quietly.
Janner sat beside her. He wrapped an arm around her, partially to comfort her and partially to comfort himself. "Please. Just...let me stay with you."
Sara sighed, and hugged him, burying her face in the crook of his neck. "Alright," she mumbled.
Janner sighed contentedly, and hugged her tighter. "I promise, I'll try to get better. I honestly don't know what's come over me."
Sara only hugged him tighter.
And so they stayed like that for a long time.
Slowly, Janner started to get better. He began to take time to see his family (with Sara, because (1) he wouldn't leave her and (2) she's a part of the family). His trust for people grew.
But he still had his boundaries and lines drawn.
Everyday with Sara was an adventure, or so Janner thought. Even though they'd spend lot's of time in the library, Janner, even though he'd known her for years, he felt that he learned something new about her everyday.
The same went for Sara.
She noticed so many different things about Janner, the way he delicately touched books, or the way his eyes seemed to light up anytime she came into the room.
If I wasn't in love with him before, I sure am now. She thought.
As the castle routine went on, so did Janner's sleep. Before, ever since Matthew had come, Janner started to lose sleep big time. Sara noticed every day that his eyes looked dreary, and tired.
One day in particular, when Janner was supposed to be in a meeting at noon with Kal and some mayors from different towns, he had chosen this day to sleep in (because, why not? The guy needs his sleep).
Kalmar got irritated waiting for his brother, so he sent Sara to wake him up.
And, just as Kalmar predicted, Janner woke to Sara's soft kiss.
And just as Janner had hoped wouldn't happen, Sara pulled back almost as soon as the kiss had started.
"Why-"
Sara cut Janner's whine off. "Good morning to you too."
Janner turned beet red, as he leaned up, trying to get another kiss.
"Uh-uh. You're late for a meeting, remember?" Sara said, scooting away from Janner, who now was pouting in what Sara saw as the cutest way possible.
"What meeting?"
Sara rolled her eyes as she stood up. "You and Kal have a meeting with the mayors of the towns of Anniera! You seriously forgot?"
Janner's confused face as he grabbed a shirt from his dresser was all she needed as an answer.
Sara sighed. "I'll tell Kal. Maybe he'll forgive you."
"Nah, I'm pretty sure uncle Artham's already taken my place." Janner grinned, crossing the room to her.
She backed away. "Nope. You need to go to that meeting."
"Whyyy? I've just had the best sleep of my life. Not to mention the way I woke up. I want to be woken up like that for the rest of my hopefully long life." He grinned at her.
She laughed. "Maybe you will, but only if you get to the meeting, and stop being late."
"This was the first time I've ever been late!"
Sara nodded her head. "And hopefully the last."
Janner groaned, then left the room without another word.
Sara's best guess to why he didn't say goodbye was that he was still mad at her for not giving him another kiss, and for basically ordering him to get to the meeting.
After the meeting, before which Kalmar pretty much yelled at Janner for being late ("You're NEVER late! Why all of a sudden do you decide to be late?!") Janner, his siblings, and Sara decided to head into Rysentown, looking for something to do. Leeli insisted on going to the Houndry, where she met up with Thorn and they began training on a new litter of puppies.
That left Kalmar, Janner, and Sara.
Janner, still having a bit of overprotectiveness, honestly thought he saw Matthew Cobbler 15 times while in town.
Each time was a different man altogether.
Kalmar decided that they should go fishing, and after wheeling Leeli, Thorn, and Galya into coming, they headed off to the River Rysen.
It was boring at first, the fish in River Rysen take a while to bite, then once they've gotten a taste of bait, they're all in.
Kalmar caught one, a 20 inch fish, and he was the first person to catch a fish that day.
They all laughed about it because apparently Kal's bait had fallen off the hook when he brought the fish in, and as the fish flapped on the ground, it tried to eat some of the bait.
Then out of the corner of his eye, Janner saw Matthew.
