Chapter 6
The party was in full swing and the tavern was crowded. Felipe began warning people because the church bells had started to ring, signalling that something important was happening and everyone should gather at the plaza. Slowly, the crowd started pouring out and gathering at the plaza, curious and full of anticipation. No smoke, no flames in sight. What was the urgency?
From the south, a rider approached at a brisk pace. Although de Soto had hoped for a more triumphant entrance. His arrival was less spectacular than he had envisioned. Nevertheless, a crowd gathered as de Soto rode under the gate of Los Angeles. He stopped next to the fountain and motioned for a lancer to pour water over the unconscious man tied to his horse on a rope. It took four buckets of water for Zorro to regain consciousness.
A wave of horror swept through the crowd as they saw the alcalde dragging an unconscious man behind him, his clothes torn and soaked with mud and water. Someone exclaimed, "That's Zorro!"
Zorro groaned as he struggled against his bound limbs, barely able to move. Victoria screamed in horror and tried to reach him. She was held back by a lancer. Another kept a rifle pointed at her. Two other lancers forced Zorro to his knees, showing no mercy.
De Soto relished in his victory and watched as Victoria was held back, tears in her eyes.
Felipe looked around helplessly, desperately seeking eye contact, trying to sense what Zorro wanted him to do. It seemed that all was lost. Zorro was defeated.
De Soto patiently waited until he had the full attention of the crowd. With a smug grin, he began to speak. "Today, is a glorious day for our beloved pueblo. My men have captured the dangerous criminal called Zorro. He will get his punishment for terrorizing the people in my care. But first I shall reveal his identity." De Soto threw Zorro's black hat next to him in the mud.
"Finally. I have waited for this moment for years. You are nothing more than a common criminal. I will rejoice in seeing you hang."
De Soto extended his arm and ripped the mask off Zorro's face.
"De la Vega?" he exclaimed, full of disbelief and astonishment.
