Chapter 7
Astonished, de Soto looked at the man dressed in black. Diego de la Vega was the most unlikely person he would have expected to be, the masked outlaw.
"Alcalde,This isn't Zorro! You've got the wrong man!" Don Alejandro remarked fiercely.
"Diego, I thought you wanted to dress up as a pirate. How did you come up with this ridiculous idea?"
"What do you mean?" De Soto demanded an explanation. Why was no one surprised that it was the young don? People started pointing at Diego and laughing. A shear of relief waved though the crowd. De Soto then noticed everyone looked ridiculous.
Bystanders made disapproving noises of anger and mostly surprise.
Don Alejandro exclaimed, "The masked ball, of course! I am dressed as don Quixote, and Diego was supposed to come as a pirate."
"He is Zorro," stuttered De Soto, pointing towards the man who was still forced to sit on his knees at his feet.
"He and at least ten others," said someone from the background.
Suddenly, several men stepped forward, each one different in build, all dressed in black with a hat, mask, cape, and sword. One of them looked remarkably familiar to de Soto. A man of average height with a stout figure and a thick moustache. His costume was a bit too tight around the waist. The cape didn't reach quite as far as it should have, stopping just above his hips. The hat wasn't black but dark gray.
Mendoza took off his hat and mask.
His sergeant was dressed as Zorro! "Mendoza! What's this nonsense?"
"It's true, alcalde. SeƱorita Victoria and don Alejandro have organized a masked ball. Everyone invited was asked to dress as a historical figure or someone we admire. Many of us chose to come dressed as Zorro."
Anger started to take over De Soto. Just when he had Zorro right where he belonged, this happened. "This is Zorro!" He pointed at Diego.
Don Alejandro said agitatedly, "This man isn't Zorro but my son! If you had bothered to read the invitation, you would have known that the ball was today at the tavern. You were invited too. And as you can see, that has led many men to decide to come disguised as Zorro. Now release him. He needs a doctor."
Anger turned into indignation and disbelief. De Soto shouted, "This is Zorro! He rode a black horse!"
Diego's voice was barely audible when he said. "Luna."
