Ch43 - Mother, Son bonding

This, was going to be fun...

Our mother, son bonding canoe trip; seems to be going well, so far. I watched as Henry switched his oar to the other side; every few minutes, so I did the same.

I guess it has something to do with keeping the canoe balanced, I'm no expert; so I'm not entirely sure, but Henry seems to know what he's doing.

Henry spoke.

"Thanks for doing this with me, mom"

I smiled, before answering.

"You're welcome, I'm glad you're having a great time so far"

He laughed, before speaking again.

"Seriously mom, this is so cool; I've never done something like this before"

My eyes widened, before I answered.

"You've never done this before?"

He spoke.

"I always wanted to, but never got the chance; but I watched a lot of YouTube videos, so don't worry"

I heard him speak, again; as we started to head further into the water.

"Isn't this great, mom?"

I smiled, before answering.

"Yeah kid, it is"

He laughed, as he spoke again.

"Can we head, further out?"

I answered.

"Sure"

He laughed again, before speaking.

"Come on mom, YouTube has never let me down; so relax, I know what I'm doing"

I smiled, before I spoke; that's my son, the information sponge. If he says he knows, what he's doing; then I trust him.

"I trust you kid"

He spoke.

"Follow my lead"

And I did, as we headed further into the water; I kept my eyes on Henry, following his actions. This was easy, I took a breath; allowing myself to relax, as we headed further away from the harbour.

I spoke.

"I have to hand it to you kid, this isn't bad"

I took a breath, while listening to the waves; as they lapped up against the canoe. It was soothing, I sighed softly; my eyes drifting shut, only opening again when Henry spoke.

"I knew, you'd like it"

I smiled, before speaking.

"Well, I'm always up for trying something new; and this, is definitely something new"

Henry laughed, before switching his oar; to the other side again, the canoe shaking slightly as he did. I closed my eyes, as I spoke.

"That was close, kid"

He laughed again, as he spoke.

"Sorry mom, I'll try not to do that again; unless..."

He trailed off, and he sounded mischievous; what was he up to?" I spoke.

"Unless what?"

He laughed, before speaking.

"Unless, we tipped over on purpose?"

He wanted to tip over, on purpose? Why would he want to do that? We're perfectly fine, and dry; where we are.

I spoke again.

"Why would you want to do that? What's wrong with staying upright and dry?"

When he spoke again, his tone; pleading.

"But mom, that's part of the experience; come on, it will be fun..."

I laughed, he really wanted to do this; I still wasn't sure, but if he wanted the full experience, then he would get the full experience. I grinned, as I waved my hand; bracing myself, as I hit the water.

I felt a shiver, run through my body; it was freezing, I shivered again as I floated beside the canoe, that was now upside down.

I heard Henry laugh, as he swam towards me; he laughed, as he spoke.

"That was awesome!"

I shivered once more, before laughing too; I spoke, still laughing as I did.

"You said, you wanted the full experience"

Henry draped himself over the canoe, as he continued laughing; he spoke, through the laughter.

"That was really cool, thanks mom"

I pulled myself up, so I could lean against the canoe; my gaze dri

so I was leaning against the canoe; smiling as I did. I peered over at Henry, and that's when I noticed the smile on his face; it felt good, to see him smile.

Apparently tipping a canoe over with magic, was something new for both of us; I smiled, as I spoke.

"So, kid; would you say, that this mother, son bonding canoe trip has been a success?"

He nodded, before speaking.

"It's been great! And the way you used, your magic to tip the canoe over; was so cool too"

I smiled again, before speaking.

"Ok kid, as much fun as that was; it's freezing, so do you wanna dry off and get back into the canoe?"

He nodded, as I waved my hand again; and within seconds, we were dried and situated in the canoe once more. I spoke, laughter still evident in my tone; as I did.

"So, was that everything; you expected it to be?"

He replied.

"Yeah, it was great! So mom, now that we did that; you ready to head back to dry land?"

I answered.

"Yeah, let's go"

We took our time, as we headed back in the direction of the harbour; and when it came into view; we slowly came to a stop. I watched as Henry got out of the canoe, he then offered me his hand; I smiled, as I thanked him.

"Thanks kid"

He smiled, as I stood beside him; we then hauled the canoe back onto dry land, before taking the lifejackets off. We gathered our stuff, before heading back to the car.

"Can we go, to Granny's; for hot cocoa with cinnamon?"

I smiled, before answering.

"Sounds good,

He nodded, as we placed everything into the backseat; before climbing in, and making our way back into town.

When we got to Granny's, we walked inside, before sitting in our usual booth. Henry lifted a menu, before looking at it briefly, he placed it down; before looking at me, he then spoke.

"Hey mom, do you know; what goes with hot cocoa?"

I smiled, as he continued looking at me; I answered.

"I don't know kid, what goes with hot cocoa?"

He answered.

"Apple pie"

I laughed, before agreeing.

"You're right, it does"

Henry smiled at me, while nodding...
