Don't You Remember – Chapter 8
A few days had passed since Maura had met Zoey. Maura was fascinated by the little girl. She thought she was so cute and so much like Jane. She looked just like a miniature Jane. Maura loved Tony but she thought that it might be nice to also have a daughter. She was thinking about adopting a little girl before Tony got too old. If she adopted a little girl, she wanted her daughter to be just like Zoey.
They had spent the last three days solving the case they had worked on and went to the Dirty Robber to celebrate. Maura had missed out on the celebrations the last few times. It was Friday night and Tony was at the movies with his sitter, Tina, so Maura said "Yes, I can go with you, Jane. I would love to."
"Wow, you have always said no, I almost didn't even ask this time." Jane informed Maura as she smiled at the fact that Maura would be joining them for their case closed celebration. Jane had always wondered why Maura had said no. She didn't want to intrude so she didn't ask her why she couldn't join them. She figured when Maura was ready, she would spill the beans. It was driving Jane crazy because she was curious but she was determined to not ask. It was hard but she could do it.
Tony and Tina liked to have one night each week where they went out at night time to do something together. Tina was Tony's best friend. Maura knew he had friends his own age but he loved to spend time with Tina. They had fun together and that is why Maura had agreed to Tina taking Tony out of the house one night a week. Tony thought of Tina as an older sister and Tina thought of Tony like a little brother. The three of them considered each other as family.
Maura was so thankful that she had Tina to help her out. She really was like a member of the family. She had a bedroom in Maura's house, as sometimes Maura was on call and Tina would spend the night on those nights so that she was there to help with Tony. Tony woke up sad some mornings when he realized that his mom had gone to work already. He liked to have breakfast with her. Maura tried to make up those times to Tony, often having one of his favorite meals for dinner that night, if she was home in time.
Tina had told Maura that she needed to take that one night a week and hang out with adults. Maura explained how the team liked to go to the Dirty Robber after they closed a case and they agreed that Tony and Tina's night out would coincide with case closure nights. Tina was happy that after years of trying to convince Maura to have a social life, she was listening to her.
Maura enjoyed socializing with the team after hours. She had never really had a social life and these visits to the Dirty Robber with colleagues were a start for her. Last night at the Dirty Robber Jane had mentioned that Zoey would be coming into work with her for about an hour while her mother went to a doctor appointment. Maura was looking forward to seeing the little girl again.
It was the team's weekend to be on call and they were behind on their paperwork so they had all agreed that they would go to work as if it was a normal day. Maura also needed to complete some reports and work on her annual budget which was due to the Governor in the next few days.
Maura decided this was a perfect time for her to get ahead on her paperwork. Tony had spent the night over at Tina's as they had decided to see a double feature and it would've been late when Tina brought Tony home.
Maura knew it was wrong to be so excited to see Zoey but she couldn't help herself, there was just something about this little girl and her mother that excited her. The past three months that she had been working at BPD were some of the most exciting times in her life. She and Jane had quickly become best friends. Maura had never had a friend like Jane. She was so comfortable around Jane and felt like she had known her for her entire life, not just three months.
On Saturday morning Jane and Zoey walked into the precinct and saw Maura walking out of the Division One Café. Zoey didn't hesitate to walk up and hug Maura. Maura had bent down to say hello and wasn't expecting a hug. Jane noticed the huge smile on Maura's face. Jane quickly joined her daughter and Maura by displaying a huge smile on her face as well.
Maura, Jane and Zoey stepped into the café so that they could get some pancakes for Zoey and coffee for Jane. They sat at the table for about ten minutes while Zoey ate her pancakes. Jane and Zoey escorted Maura to her office. Once they arrived at Maura's office and Jane was getting ready to say goodbye, Zoey asked Maura, "Doctor Mo, can you check my knees for me?"
Maura looked down and noticed that Zoey still had her band aids on. "Sure, you probably could have taken the band aids off."
"No, I told mama she couldn't touch my band aids because she is only an assistant and not the doctor." Zoey was so serious Maura had to try hard not to laugh. She could picture Zoey telling Jane that and Jane just throwing her arms up and saying 'whatever.' "I told her that you were the only one that I would let take the band aids off."
"Well, I guess I better take a look at your knees then." Maura said as she looked up at Jane.
"I'm sorry Maur, I forgot to tell you." Jane told Maura as she smiled at her.
"No worries, Jane. Can you be my assistant again?"
"Sure, let me go wash my hands." Jane said as she walked into the bathroom. Two minutes later she was ready to be Maura's assistant.
Maura lifted Zoey up on the table which she had lined with several sheets to make it a little bit more comfortable for her. Zoey sat on the edge and Maura put on her gloves as did Jane. Maura had arranged a medical tray with Q-tips, antiseptic wipes, new band aids in case they are needed and some towels to wipe down Zoey's knees.
Zoey was all smiles as she interacted with Maura. "Mo, you are a nice lady. I like you."
"Thank you, Zoey. I must say you are a very nice young lady. I am pleased that you like. I like you also. I am glad your mama and I are friends." Maura informed Zoey as she removed the band aids and passed them to Jane who placed them in biohazard box near the autopsy table.
Zoey hardly looked at her mama the whole time she was being treated by Maura. Zoey liked Maura and Jane wondered if she should be worried. Zoey had been talking about Maura since she met her. Zoey had never talked about someone she met so much before. Jane wasn't really worried, she liked the fact that Zoey liked Maura because she did as well.
When Maura took the band aids off, she noticed that Zoey's knees had healed nicely. She cleaned the still visible would and without thinking bent down and applied a kiss to each would. Jane looked at Zoey and Zoey said, "Dr. Mo thank you. Mama time for you to apply your magic mama kisses again. Jane didn't hesitate to apply kisses to Zoey's knees.
Jane went to pick up Zoey and Zoey said, "No mama, Dr. Mo needs to pick me up and place me back on the ground." Jane took a step back and swung her arms over to Maura motioning that it was her turn to act.
Maura smiled at both of them and then and pulled Zoey into a hug and lifted her off of the table. Zoey didn't want to let go so Maura just hung on to her. Zoey wrapped her little arms around Maura's neck and wrapped her legs around her waist. She snuggled her head into Maura's neck. Maura walked with Zoey and Jane to her office. Maura sat down on the couch and remained cuddled up with Zoey. Jane sat beside them. Zoey repositioned herself on Maura's lap so that she could see her mama.
They talked for a few minutes before Jane received a text message from her mother letting her know that she would be there in about ten minutes to pick up Zoey. Jane was surprised to find out that they had been talking for almost an hour already. She hadn't even made it up to her desk yet. She had sent a text message to Frost earlier to let him know that she was with Zoey and Maura in the Division One Café.
"Z, nonna is almost here, we need to go upstairs and say hello to the guys. They are looking forward to seeing you."
"Can Dr. Mo come with us?"
Jane looked at Maura and Maura smiled and said, "Yes, I can go up with you, Zoey. I have a report to drop off to one of the detectives upstairs. He is not here but he will be happy when he sees the report on his desk. Just give me a minute and I will be ready." Zoey moved over to her mama's lap so that Maura could get the report.
Zoey wanted to hold hands with both Jane and Maura as they took the elevator upstairs. Jane let Zoey push the buttons and told her to push the 'L.' They needed to stop and let the desk officer know that she was expecting her mother to arrive soon. He set up the visitor pass and then they continued their journey upstairs.
Frost was the first to see Zoey and she took off running to him. He quickly got up out of his seat and stood up so he could receive the missile known as Zoey. She went flying into him and he picked her up and spun around with her. She was laughing, she loved when Frost spun her around like that. Frost was laughing also, he loved Zoey. "Uncle Frosty, down please."
"But Z, I wasn't finished spinning you yet." Frost admitted with a sad expression on his face. Zoey leaned up and attempted to kiss him but he was spinning her to fast and she caught his next inside.
"Dizzy, Uncle Frosty, I'm dizzy." Zoey had closed her eyes because she couldn't handle seeing things as she spun around.
"Are you sure?" Frost asked as he stopped spinning her but didn't release her.
"Yes, I am sure." Zoey let him know as she opened her eyes and pulled away a little so she could look him in the face. She then saw Korsak and waved at him. "Hello, Uncle Vince."
"Hello Zoey, are you having fun this morning?"
"Yes, doctor Mo took off my band aids this morning. Mama was her medical assistant." Zoey very proudly smiled at her mama, she was proud of her mama.
Vince added, "Your mama and Doctor Mo, as you call her, work well with each other."
"Yes, I must admit we do. I am enjoying helping all of you solve the cases." Maura admitted.
"Ya, we seem to have an ease of working together and that is helping solve our cases in a faster time frame. I hate to speak bad of people but I had a hell of time of getting information from the last medical examiner. It was like pulling teeth."
"Mama, you cussed. You have to put money in the cuss jar when we get home."
"Yes, baby, I will add my money to it tonight when I get home."
"No mama, I will take it and put it in the jar so you don't forget." Everyone covered their mouths to keep from laughing at Jane being bossed around by her three-year daughter.
Before anyone could say anything, Angela appeared in the doorway and Zoey shrieked, "Nonna!" Jane reached in her pocket and pulled out a few dollars and handed the money to her daughter. Angela just raised her eyebrows and looked between her daughter and granddaughter.
"Jane, really." Angela didn't need to say the entire sentence, Jane knew her mother knew that she had cussed again in front of Zoey.
"It just came out ma, I didn't mean to cuss in front of her." Angela just shook her head, she had been working on Jane to stop cussing in front of Zoey as she didn't want Zoey to grow up speaking like her mother. Jane didn't start cussing until she was older.
"Zoey, did you bring anything? We need to go so your mama and her coworkers can get back to work." Zoey started hugging everyone and left Maura and Jane for last.
She motioned for Maura to pick her up as she wanted to give her a big hug. "Thank you for taking my band aids off."
"You are welcome sweetheart. I was happy that you came to see me today. Anytime you need your band aids removed or would like me to check your boo boos just let me know."
"Okay, thank you." Maura put her down and then she went to her mama. She was holding Jane's hand as she turned to walk out of the bullpen waving at everybody. She let go of Jane's hand when they reach the elevator so that she could push the down button. She reached for Jane's hand again once they got in the elevator and she had pushed the 'L' button for the lobby.
Jane walked her mother and daughter out to Angela's car and kissed them both goodbye. Jane then went back to the bullpen and started working on her paperwork. They had decided to go home at 4 PM and at 2:30 they received a call and they spent the next hour at a crime scene. Jane and Frost spent the next few hours researching leads for their new case.
Zoey was disappointed that she was not able to have dinner with mother. Jane had called and explained to her mother that she would be late and could Zoey spend the night with her. Zoey went to bed that night at her nonna's upset that her mama had to stay at work instead of being home with her.
Jane had called Zoey before bedtime and had spent a few minutes with her on the phone. Jane told her a quick bedtime story and then she had to get off the phone and go back to work. Korsak and Frost were picking up a suspect and she was prepping for the interrogation.
Maura was set to leave after she finished the report for the autopsy she had just concluded. She had called Susie in to come in and help her run the lab tests. She knew that the results wouldn't be in until the next day so she went home. She was home by 6:30 PM and was able to enjoy dinner with Tony and Tina. Maura said she and Tony would clean up so that Tina could go home and enjoy some time off. Tina replied, "Thank you, I will see you Monday afternoon unless you get called into work."
Maura escorted Tina to the door and then went to join Tony in cleaning up their dinner mess and then they started their nighttime regime. Maura enjoyed having a nighttime regime with Tony, she cherished all the moments she had with him.
