Yang was enjoying the supportive contact her dad had kept by having his arm around his elder daughter, the blonde stepped closer towards Tai sinking into his shoulder as she listened to the conversation that was taking place, Yang was currently being regaled with a story by Qrow about how he and the survivors of Atlas that didn't use the portals that had travelled to Vacuo, every so often she glanced over at Blake who had remained herself in close proximity to her own parents remained in between them as the two held arms behind their daughter giving her a symbolic parachute to fall back on, the Belladonna trio were listening to Maria and Team CFVY delight them with some enjoyable stories as the three were smiling as they listened intently and Yang smirked as she saw Velvet give an animated response with her hands that her bunny ears jumped around along with.
When Yang turned her eyes back to Blake she found her attention had turned to her, she felt her smirk turn into a smile as Blake rolled her eyes at Yang. Yang frowned when Blake broke her eye contact and her face fell into a guilty expression as her ears dropped in shame, Yang followed her girlfriends eyeline and found herself looking up at her dad who had turned his attention to Blake with a neutral expression, his reaction confused Yang at first until she realized he wasn't in the know. Laughing to herself she brushed off her concerns before stepping forwards and catching her dad's hand in her own as it fell from her shoulder.
"Come on old man." Yang taunted half-heartedly; Tai grumbled at the pretend insult.
Yang waved Blake over to meet them halfway and she stepped forward out from her parents embrace, walking nervously towards Yang and her dad, trusting in her partner. As they closed the gap Yang reached out with her free hand and Blake responded by accepting the offer, taking Yang's hand into her own, Yang used the opportunity to pull herself into a half hug with Blake, releasing her hold on her dad's hand she spun around so the two were facing Tai.
"Dad… This is Blake… My partner… and girlfriend." Yang asserted her words by pulling Blake close and kissing her cheek eliciting a blush from the Faunus. Tai for his part didn't seem to react at first, keeping a neutral expression that caused Blake to fear the worst but Yang didn't seem phased, if Tai had a problem then he'd just have to live with it.
Tai turned his head upwards slightly looking past the two girls towards the Belladonna parents he crossed his arms as he spoke.
"You know Blake, I feared that Yang shared my curse… I don't think she realized her feelings for you at the time but I feared that she had fallen for a girl that was destined to leave, that she had found someone like her mother…" His expression softened as he uncrossed his arms and looked down at the closeness that surrounded Blake and Yang, smiling as he chuckled to himself. "Thankfully, it would seem she has better intuition than me in this sort of thing, she fell for someone who had the courage to come back." Stepping forward he rested his hands on each of their shoulders, pulling the two closer to each other and into a hug with him.
Tai took a deep breath as he revelled in the opportunity to hug his daughter with her partner, Tai looked up at the shared expression of Ghira and Kali as the two looked on at the interaction without the information that Tai had but the hands of Yang and Blake holding each other tightly, the small peck on the cheek was enough to fill the major points, Tai ended the hug as she chuckled again.
"Now, it would seem it's your turn Yang, to face the music… And take it from someone who learnt the hard way. If you want a Purrfect first impression…" his expression dropped into a grumble at the lost pun opportunities. "No Faunus puns."
Yang gave a thumbs up as she laughed at the thought of her dad's puns falling flat on Blake's parents, salting the wound that was his embarrassment, she stuck out a tongue before letting loose with her own pun.
"No Faunus puns, got it… I'll attuna myself to their preferences."
Tai went to high five his daughter but Yang missed as she stumbled at the playful shove from Blake who had raised a playful eyebrow, evidently struggling to stifle a laugh at watching the good-humoured back and forth between the two Xiao Longs.
Yang chuckled out sarcastically.
"What..? Too much?"
Blake's expression remained the same, save for the ending of her subdued laughter as she didn't want Yang to embarrass herself in front of her parents, Yang frowned at Blake's unmoving expression, her voice full of disbelief and hope as she spoke again.
"Too little?"
Blake's expression hardened as she frowned at her partner, creasing her brow at the suggestion.
"I wonder if I can sell your arm back to that Raccoon?" Blake spoke curiously.
"No Faunus puns got it." Yang relented, sharing the same defeat in her voice as Tai had at the lost potential puns.
Blake softened into her girlfriends embrace.
"Only getting it now?" she laughed out.
Yang shrugged as she feebly tried to erect a defence. "We kissed in a world of fairytales; I thought maybe girlfriends get a free pass." Yang raised her free hand in mock defeat, as the two turned around and started the walk towards Blake's parents Yang looked towards the floor and grumbled out under her breath.
"Says the girl that followed a laser pen."
"What was that?" Blake asked knowingly.
"Oh nothing." Yang responded before Blake continued.
"You know, if you're on your best behaviour I might even buy your arm back from the trash panda… And I'll remind you, I was very sleep deprived."
Yang laughed under her breath at her partners defence but before she knew it her eyes landed on the legs and shoes of two people in front of her and Yang realized she and Blake had closed the gap between themselves and Blake's parents, worried they had overheard, Yang clammed up concerned she had already ruined her first girlfriend impression, Blake as if sensing her partners worry made the first move.
"Mum, Dad, this is Yang Xiao Long, daughter of-"
Blake was cut off by a heavy sigh by Kali who interrupted her daughter, her voice griping at the memory of first hearing Tai's attempts at humour.
"-of Taiyang Xiao Long… we are… aware… there were many puns… You were at Haven? I'm sorry we didn't get to meet properly; we were busy cleaning up after the White Fang."
There was a moment of silence as Yang couldn't bring herself to look up, Blake seemed to sense her worry and pulled Yang closer to her, Blake steeled herself shaking her head slightly at the idea of where Yang got her sense of humour from.
"I shiver at the thought but no, this is Yang… my- my girlfriend. Her puns are much better." Blake stumbled slightly when she introduced Yang to her parents.
Ghira laughed at the awkwardness of his daughter and how she blushed when she admitted that she enjoyed Yang's sense of humour, when he spoke Yang's attention was drawn to him as he joked out.
"So your puns actually go off with a Yang?"
If Ghira was unsure about making a pun it didn't show in his voice and any worry he may have had was immediately dispelled as Yang looked up at him with an expression of absolute joy as she revelled in Ghira's attempt, the blondes head jumped between Ghira and his daughter before landing on Blake.
"I'll admit it was no picnic at the start, Blake seemed happy to dive into her books and getting her to talk was like pulling teeth but she slowly warmed up to me-"
Yang's sentence was cut short by a playful nudge by Blake's waist pushing her own.
"Kinda hard not to when your hair literally sets on fire."
Yang and Blake both laughed at Blake's words.
"But now I couldn't imagine a world without her." Yang admitted to Kali and Ghira who smiled between them at the earnestness in Yang's voice.
Kali and Ghira gazed softly at Yang who hadn't realized until now that she was blushing at her own words as Ghira rested an arm gently onto Yang's shoulder.
"It's an honour to properly meet you Yang and I know I speak for all of us when I say, welcome to the family." He pulled Yang and Blake into a hug with himself and Kali, the two girls sunk softly into the warm embrace as Ghira whispered conspiratorially to Yang making sure the others could still hear.
"Blake says your puns are better. I'm sure my lovely wife will come around to them eventually but I look forward to hearing them."
In response Yang signalled her prosthetic to disconnect from her causing it to drop and sway in Blake's hand.
"Oh, you've caught my unready and unarmed, give me a moment."
Yang and Blake struggled to stifle their laughter as Kali let out another sigh, watching the two as Blake gently reconnected Yang's arm.
"I'm surrounded by clowns." Kali let out with an exasperated breath.
Yang looked up at the woman with a knowing smile.
"When surrounded by clowns… go for the juggler."
Blake's stifled laughter grew louder as she was joined by Ghira who looked down at Yang proudly, Kali seemed unimpressed rolling her eyes begore looking down at her daughter, voice full of sarcasm.
"You can take her back to where you found her and leave your father there while you're at it."
Blake shook her head half-heartedly at her mother's derision before grasping Yang's hand tightly with her own.
"Nah, she's stuck with us as much as we're stuck with her."
The four remained for a moment before Ghira patted Yang's shoulder.
"As much as it's an honour to meet my daughter's partner, would it be too much to ask to meet the rest of this infamous team RWBY?"
Blake pulled Yang from her parents embrace as she nodded.
"Don't worry you're going to love them…" Blake turned and scanned the room as she quickly realized their absence, she let out a small chuckle. "Don't worry, we'll go find them, Ruby and Weiss seem to have drifted off somewhere."
"What makes you think they're together?"
"Oh, just a hunch… hmmm, we can't all leave for too long, somebody has to represent team RWBY."
The two kept a soft hold on each other's hands as they walked, Yang rolled her eyes at Blake's worry about team RWBY's absence.
"Come on, they can manage a few minutes without us."
Blake lent her head onto Yang's shoulder determined to keep her partner on track.
"Are you telling me you don't want to see Weiss meet your dad?"
Yang giggled at the idea before relenting.
"Fine but you owe me."
Before the two could make their exit Tai appeared in front of them, his jovial demeanour from earlier replaced with a more soft expression.
"Before you two love cats scuttle away, don't worry about it for now but I forgot to mention earlier. Raven's here, not here as in Shade but her tribes set up on the outskirts of Vacuo. She's not answering her scroll which isn't too surprising so if you're feeling up to it tomorrow, we should probably tell her you're alive."
Yang processed the information before turning to Blake who had waited for Yang to respond to Tai.
"So it only seems fair, I met both your parents. Wanna meet my mum?"
Blake could sense the cover in Yang's voice as she tried to supress her emotions almost but not quite managing to keep her voice steady. Blake nodded strongly as she gave a supportive squeeze of Yang's hand that she held.
Blake rested her forehead on Yang's own seeking to comfort the blonde as she felt Yang's hand shake slightly in one hand, with the other she gently held onto the back of Yang's head directing her slightly into her shoulder, speaking softly as she did.
"It's only fair, together."
Yang gave a small nod.
"Together."
Notes:
For the Blake/Yang puns I believe that Yang wouldn't call Blake Kitty or anything like that but I can't recall if she ever makes any cat-based puns so I thought it would be good to show Yang checking boundaries and respecting them after Blake makes her position clear and we know Tai would've found out the hard way. I like to think that Ghira enjoys the puns and Kali appreciates the effect they have on Blake but we all know Tai would've definitely put his foot in it.
The end bit about Raven and a little spoiler, the Raven chapter that's coming soon, was written before the RWBY panel at RTX so I'm happy that my concerns about if it was realistic of me to expect Raven to go to Vacuo were without merit.
