Disclaimer: I don't own the series, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor does and always will.
So now that that's out of the way, I hope yall enjoy the story! Stay, stay, it'll be a good one. I think.
And also, unlike in the book, The Girls Take Over, Caroline and Wally won't be 9 and 10. They'll be 12 and 13.
As Caroline stared at the auditorium ceiling, hearing each word called out, like they were being called out to her.
But seeing Wally take the stage, the one she should've been standing on, hurt like a thousand knives stabbing in her back.
He was given the word knowledge, which of course he got right. Like it was that hard. Each family exchanged happy smiles and Peter clapped for his brother.
Caroline could barely contain the tears in her eyes. She wanted to cry so much, but so as to not embarrass herself and her family, she willingly blinked back the tears.
At the end of the line, Wally looked very uncomfortable, with his shoulders slumped and his eyes facing the floor.
Watching him from her seat in the second row, she knew that she was the one that should be in his spot. She could've definitely won it, if only she had messed her word up in the classroom.
Precocious. It was so easy to spell, yet she went too fast and messed it all up.
One more contestant was eliminated and then it came down to Wally. "Handkerchief." Said the superintendent.
Oh, that's so easy! Caroline thought. That was probably the easiest word so far! If she were in the spelling contest, she would much rather have the harder words. Not the little baby ones.
"Handkerchief." Wally repeated, looking straight ahead, nor did he blink. "H-a-n-d..." He hesitated, and his lip.
Caroline could feel with every bone in her body that Wally would miss this word. She just knew that he would've put in a c instead of a k.
"Uh..." Wally said, staring helplessly at the ceiling. Caroline just had to help.
"I know it!" Caroline cried, suddenly jumping up to her feet.
"Caroline!" Her mother hissed. "Sit down!"
Her mother tried to reach over Eddie's lap to grab her arm. "H-a-n-d-k-e-r-c-h-i-e-f! I'm from Buckman Middle too! I'm in the seventh grade too, and I know it!"
Caroline whirled around on impulse and faced the audience. "But I know it!" She cried.
Suddenly out of nowhere, she felt herself being jerked around. Her mother had a hold of her arm, her nails digging into Caroline's skin. Tears begin to build up in her eyes.
Her mother's hand came at her face and she smacked her hard. Even from the stage, Wally's eyes grew as wide as saucers.
Caroline ran out of the side door, sobbing. She ran until she got to the west wing of the school, where she put her head in her lap, not being able to stop the waterfall of tears falling down her face.
After Caroline's outburst, Wally walked down from the stage and walked over to his parents.
As soon as he got to them, Mrs. Malloy walked over. "Wally, I'm so sorry that Caroline did that. She needs to apologize. I'll go find her."
"No, it's ok. I'll go find her. I'm pretty sure I know where she went anyway."
Wally's family looked at him, even Jake, looked sympathetic. "I'm sorry that you didn't get the opportunity to go to the state contest." His mom said.
"No, it's really ok. I just need to go find Caroline; Mrs. Malloy wanted to make her apologize."
"She should apologize, Wallace. She ruined your chance to go to the state contest."
Wally walked out the side door that Caroline had ran out of 30 minutes earlier. He knew just where to find her.
He walked out to the west wing of their school and opened the outside door. When he walked in, at first glance he couldn't see her, but when he walked pass the soda machine, he found her.
She was curled into a ball, her head in her lap. "Hey." He said softly as he could.
She lifted her head, tears stains on her cheeks. "What do you want?" She sniffled as she wiped away the tears.
"Your mom told me to come find you and make you apologize."
She rolled her eyes. "Why should I apologize to you?"
"Um, maybe because you ruined my chance to go to the state contest."
She sniffed. "Admit it. You didn't really want to win. You probably didn't take it as seriously as I did. Because you don't care."
Now Wally was getting a little pissed. "Don't give me that crap." He snapped. "The only reason you probably even wanted to win was to hold it over me that I lost and you won."
"Wally, that's not true!" She cried. "I love to spell. Especially big words. And when I got the word that everyone calls me wrong, I began to think that I was a fraud."
"Why'd you think that?" He asked as he sat down next to her on the floor.
"Because I thought I could spell good, but you saw how bad I messed up precocious. It was a disaster. I'm a disaster."
"Nah," Wally disagreed. "You're not a disaster at all. If anything, you're a wish come true."
Caroline blushed as she stared at him. When he saw her staring at him, he finally realized what he had said. He blushed bright red.
Before she even processed what she was doing, she leaned towards him and kissed him. He put his arm around her neck and deepened the kiss.
The feeling they both got, was, mmm, special and spectacularly amazing.
When they pulled apart, they just stared at each other in shock and awe. "That was...weird."
Wally turned towards her, one of his eyebrows raised. "Weird? Did you not like it?"
"No! I did, yes. I just meant it was a good weird."
"Why? I didn't find it even the slightest bit weird."
"I didn't mean it like that. It was really good and I enjoyed it."
Wally smiled. "I'm glad, because this is something that we've got to do more often." He said this right as he leaned into me and our lips fit together perfectly, once again.
Two hearts, beating as one.
