Episode 15: Pups Save A Snow Monster On Ice! Two Teams, Two Rescues!
October 12th, 2029
Today was a special day- Adventure Bay Snow Day! Ben grinned and patted Alex on the head. "Snow sounds like lots of fun!" Alex giggled as he heard all about the wonders of a snow day from his owner.
"Weather predicts a ton of snow today, just like it does every year." Ryder reported.
"I'm gonna go watch Marshall jump rope with the others. He always comes up with the funniest things when they do the letter game." Ben chuckled before going outside to check in with the others.
As Ben sat down on the bench that Ryder and Rocky had built, he felt his phone vibrate. Picking it up out of his pocket, he looked to see a text from Jake. Attached was a photo of him and Everest. "So excited to see you guys later today! Everest is ecstatic. Surprised about how much she's looking forward to it— I didn't expect her to be this enthusiastic! She used to live in pure snow." Jake's text read. Ben let out a hearty laugh. That was Jake all right.
Ben looked up from his phone and saw the first flakes of snow begin to fall from the sky as Marshall started his turn on the jump rope. "F! I am a fire pup, I come from Finland, where I sell…" Marshall sang.
"SNOW!" Rocky squealed in delight.
" Snow? That doesn't start with the letter F!" Marshall pointed out.
"No, I mean REAL snow!" Rocky replied.
"Snow?! Cool!" Marshall exclaimed. Then he got tangled up in the jump rope and tripped. All the pups and Ben laughed, but it was a good natured laugh, not making fun of the Dalmatian.
Ryder came out of the lookout. "Hey pups, who wants a snow day?" Ryder called out. Everyone squealed yes as Ben went over and helped untangle the rope that was wrapped around Marshall's legs.
About an hour later, Ryder got a call from Jake. "Ryder, dude!" Jake sighed in relief.
"Hey, Jake. The pups and I were just going to come up and see you." Ryder replied.
"Cool, 'cause I was calling to invite you up for a little Mountain rescue… or two, for that matter." Jake sheepishly said.
"Rescues? As in, plural? What's the conundrum?" Ben inquired, intrigued by the idea of having two rescues go on at the same time.
"Alexander Porter and I got kind of stuck. Plus, Adventure Bay Snow Day's continuation is up in the air… everyone's totally spooked. Some skiers said they saw the Adventure Bay snow monster!" Jake explained. He showed Ryder that he and Alexander were stuck on top of a cliff.
"The Adventure Bay Snow Monster? That's just an old story." Ryder remarked.
"I know, but if we don't find whatever people think is this monster, dude, I'll have to close the slopes for the winter or maybe, like, forever." Jake worriedly responded.
"I'm sure there's a simple explanation! The PAW Patrol will figure it out, and we'll save you and Alex! No job is too big, no pup is too small!" Ryder promised, before summoning the pups with the multicolored button on his pup pad.
Rubble burst out of his puphouse on a snowboard before getting called. Ben was first in the elevator, Alex right behind his owner. The rest of the pups followed soon after, with Marshall hopping in, apparently stuck on his snowboard. The fire pup landed on Skye's helmet, the snowboard barely balancing on it. On the plus side, he was unstuck! "Thanks for getting me unstuck!" Marshall thanked. All the pups laughed as the elevator lifted up and went up to the lookout control room, pausing halfway so the mechanical arms could outfit the pups in their uniforms.
Chase and the pups leapt out when the elevator doors glided open, with the police pup stepping front and center. "Ready for action, Ryder, sir!" Chase called out.
"Thanks for coming so quickly, pups. Today we have a double duty. Jake and Alexander Porter are stuck at the bottom of a steep, icy slope." Ryder began.
"Whoa! Jake usually wescues snowboawdews!" Zuma gasped.
"That's right, but now it's up to the PAW Patrol to do the rescuing. In addition, we have a mountain mystery! Skiers are leaving because they thought they saw a snow monster." Ryder continued.
"A snow monster?" Rocky gasped.
"Those are just stories!" Rubble argued.
"Of course we know Snow Monsters aren't real, so we have to figure out what those skiers saw and heard. Since we have two rescues at once, we're going to split up. Ben will be leading the snow monster search, since cryptozoology is his passion. I'll be handling the rescue of Jake and Alexander." Ryder explained.
Ben saluted Ryder. "You got it, boss. Mythical creatures and such are one of my personal interests, so I'm honored you want me to lead a crew to investigate the rumors." Ben solemnly said.
"What's crypto-zoo-whatsit?" Alex Moon asked.
"That's the study of unknown and legendary animals who aren't fully acknowledged by science!" Ben told his wolf pup.
Ryder started to hand out the assignments for the missions. "Chase, I need you and your winch motor to help, in case we need to pull them up the slope. Skye, I'll need you and your helicopter to fly close enough to try to rescue them. Ben, you'll take Rubble to the area where the snow monster was spotted. His bulldozer could be useful in case we need to move some snow, and we might need you to snowboard down to help look for tracks. You'll need some extra sniffing power, and since Chase is helping me with Jake…" Ryder instructed, before sliding his finger across the pup pad and selecting the cyan badge with a silver tree on it.
"EVEREST!" Everyone shouted.
"Hi guys! What's up?" Everest asked.
"Me and Rubble are going to investigate the snow monster sightings, and we could use your help!" Ben told her.
"I'm in! Off the trail, Everest won't fail!" The husky exclaimed.
"Snowboarding time! Rubble on the double!" The bulldog cried out.
"Chase is on the case!" The German Shepherd shouted.
"Let's take to the skies!" The cockapoo yipped.
"All right! PAW Patrol is on a roll!" Ryder declared.
"PAW Patrol, roll to the rescue! The rest of you, head to Jake's cabin and be on standby!" Ben commanded. The humans took the fire pole to the garage and got on their vehicles, while all six pups took the slide to get in their pupmobiles.
Ryder, Chase, and Skye drove over to the location where Jake had called from, with Ryder putting his ATV into snowmobile mode. Skye went ahead and flew up to the cliff where the signal had come from, and using her goggles, she spotted Jake and Alexander. "Ryder, I can see them! I'll see if I can get close enough to help!" Skye reported.
As her helicopter approached them, she gasped as she saw the snow hanging off the cliff face above the two humans begin to shake, and two icicles impaled themselves in the ground next to Jake and Alexander. Quickly, she pulled back and gave Ryder an update. "It's no good, Ryder. I can't get close to them! The wind from the 'copter could cause an avalanche!" Skye worriedly said.
"Okay Skye. Come back in and we'll figure out a different way to get Jake and Alexander off of the ledge." Ryder replied, his voice calm, sympathetic, and understanding.
"Over and out, Ryder!" Skye answered.
Landing her helicopter in the snow and running back to Ryder and Chase, she saw their leader stroking his chin thoughtfully. A lightbulb suddenly went off as a plan formed in Ryder's head. He then called Jake on the pup pad to consult him on this new plan. "Jake, Skye can't get the helicopter close to you. If we can get Alexander up, can you board out?" Ryder suggested.
"Sure thing, Ryder dude. Get Alexander up safe and I can make it down easy." Jake earnestly replied, giving Ryder a thumbs up.
"Here I come! Watch for falling rocks… or Ryders!" The teenager chuckled. Jake giggled before hanging up the call. Ryder then turned to his pups and gave them a rundown of the plan. "Chase, I'll hook Skye's rope and harness to your winch to give some extra length. Lower me down, then pull Alexander and me back up. Skye, you can scout out the best route down." Ryder told the police and pilot pups.
"You got it, Ryder, sir!" Chase answered, running to get his winch.
"It's time to fly!" Skye squealed.
Skye hovered from a distance and directed Ryder as he scaled down the cliff face. The young man slipped on an icy patch of the cliff and caused a few more icicles to fall, which Jake and Alexander had to dodge. Ryder then set down on the ground. "Nice of you to drop in, Ryder!" Jake greeted.
"Hey Jake. Alexander, ready to get off this ledge? Jake, are you ready to board down?" Ryder asked, saying hello to Jake as well.
"I'm ready!" Alexander responded, nodding his head.
"Been looking for an excuse to board this slope all year!" Jake assured Ryder.
"Okay. Alexander, do exactly what I tell you so we can get up safely. All right, Chase, nice and slow!" Ryder called out. "Roger that, Ryder, sir!" Chase barked, pulling his cruiser back.
Ryder and Alexander used the winch and rope to ascend up the cliff face, but the winch motor stopped pulling them up. The rope had gotten caught in a rock. "Looks like we're going to have to climb out on our own, Alexander." Ryder remarked. They started to climb up the slope, but slipped on a patch of ice and nearly fell down the cliff face again.
"This slope's too slippery! If only we had something else to climb on…" Ryder sighed.
Chase's eyes lit up as he thought of something. "One makeshift ladder coming right up!" Chase roared, barking out his net and shooting it so that it covered the ice patch. "Climb up fast, my paws are freezing!" Chase then told the two. Ryder and Alexander made their way up the slope where Alexander thanked Chase and Ryder. He then gave Jake the signal to start snowboarding down the slope.
Over on Ben's end of things…
Ben, Rubble and Everest were trudging through the snow, having dismounted their vehicles for the time being. They would be able to track the supposed 'snow monster' on foot better than if they were driving. Plus, they wanted to be quiet- Ben didn't want to alert whatever it was to their presence and spook it away.
"Jake said he saw the tracks at the bottom of the slope!" Everest barked, and the three of them got on snowboards before sliding down the slope. Everest did a neat couple of tricks, howling as she was having fun.
When they got to the bottom of it, Rubble gasped. "Here's some tracks!" Rubble pointed out. Everest stuck her nose up to the track, sniffing it deeply.
"These tracks are really deep, so that means whatever made them weighs a lot!" Everest mused.
Rubble whimpered and started shivering in fear. "Y-you think the snow monster is near here?" Rubble stammered.
"Rubble, there's probably not a monster. And besides, if there is one, then you can ram it with your bulldozer." Ben sighed. Then a loud roar echoed through the distance, prompting Ben to take charge again. "Let's find out what's really going on. Everest, let's start sniffing it out." Ben said.
Everest followed the scent to a couple of feathers, and pointed them in the direction of where the monster went. Rubble tried to turn tail and slink off, but Ben caught him. "Rubble, where are you going? Come on! We gotta stick together!" Ben reminded the bulldog. Rubble whined, but followed Ben and Everest.
"Silly Rubble! The scariest thing around here is my tummy rumbles!" Everest giggled. Almost on cue, her stomach growled, causing Rubble to jump. Ben chuckled as he tossed Everest a piece of liver, which she happily gobbled up.
They found a branch with berries and the strange scent on it. The loud roar was heard again, and it was much louder than before. Rubble crouched and covered his eyes with his paws. Ben gave Rubble a boop on the nose. "Come on, Rubble. You're one of the toughest pups I know. We don't back down from a rescue! If we don't find this thing, then Adventure Bay Snow Day is canceled forever!" Ben encouraged.
"Yeah, and then me and Jake might have to move off of the mountain!" Everest added.
Rubble stood up, nodding his head. "Okay! Let's do this!" Rubble shouted.
They kept following the scent before coming up to a tree. "The scent is really strong now. We're really close!" Everest exclaimed.
They heard snow crunching, and Rubble screamed. "SNOW MONSTER!" The bulldog screamed in horror, running into a bush for cover. Everest saw whatever it was, too, and she got scared as well, joining Rubble in the bushes.
"That's the weirdest looking thing I've ever seen!" Everest squeaked.
Ben turned around to see a tree creature with massive branch arms and six sets of eyes, which roared at him. "Oh no you don't! You're not getting me or these pups for breakfast!" Ben yelled, attempting to punch whatever this thing was in what was presumably either its legs, or its gluteus maximus. His fist connected with the familiar contours of a snout, and not just any snout…
The cries of a cow mooing was heard as it ran out from the tree, the branch arms dropping to the ground. Ben recognized this cow as Bettina. On top of Bettina was one of Farmer Yumi's goats, and Chickaletta was perched atop the goat! "Bettina!? YOU'RE the snow monster?" Ben gasped. Thankfully he hadn't punched her too hard.
"That's no snow monster, it's a moo-ster !" Rubble joked. They all laughed at that.
"It made strange tracks because Bettina's wearing boots… Come on, you three. Let's get you to your owners. I bet Yumi and the mayor are worried sick about you." Ben sighed, easing the cow back to the lodge.
Ryder's group got back to the lodge at the same time as Ben's. "Bettina? Garbie? Chickaletta? What are they doing here?" Ryder asked in confusion.
"Turns out they were the monster the whole time!" Ben snickered.
"The abominable chicka-cow-go monster?" Jake gasped, sitting down on his bench and taking a drink of water.
"We told you there was a logical explanation!" Rubble exclaimed. Ben rolled his eyes and Everest cracked up into laughter at that, since Rubble was the most fearful of the three.
"Oh, thank goodness. You found Garbie and Bettina. Silly cow, how did you get those old boots stuck on your feet? Thanks for finding them." Yumi thanked Ben as she approached, before talking to Bettina. The cow mooed in response.
"Chickaletta, you naughty chicken. I was so worried!" Mayor Goodway sighed in relief, placing her pet bird in her purse and giving her a hug.
Zuma, Rocky, Alex Moon, and Marshall came out from inside the cabin. "Whenever there's trouble, just yelp for help!" Marshall added.
"We just got done playing Pup Pup Boogie! Since the rescues are done, can we play in the snow now?" Alex Moon asked. Ben chuckled, picking up his wolf and cradling him in his arms before giving a hug and setting him back down.
"Of course we can!" Ben agreed.
"As Mayor, I declare that Adventure Bay Snow Day is BACK ON!" Mayor Goodway announced. Everyone cheered before heading to go play in the snow.
A double whammy rescue, adapting two episodes and including Everest in them! I enjoyed writing two rescues in one.
