Ch 22 The Battle for the Heat Badge
Steven stood before a flat battlefield in Flannery's backyard, the day had finally arrived. The day when they can finally battle for the Heat Badge. He wore his usual attire with his number #367 on his arm.
There was a Rotom Drone hovering above the Battlefield, the cameras were on both Mr. Moore and Steven.
Both Flannery and Brawly have earned their Badges but Steven was at a bit of a disadvantage. Mainly because two of his Pokemon are Steel-types and one is Grass-type, but nonetheless the other two have the Rock-type advantage.
The Steel-blue haired trainer looks at the bleachers, where his friends was cheering for him.
"You can do it, Steven! I believe in you!" Helena cheered loudly for the trainer on the field.
"Kirlia!" Kirlia also cheered, sitting on her Partner's lap. She wanted to watch the battle between Steven and Flannery's Grandfather.
Roxanne looks at Helena, noticing the pendant around her neck. "Ooh, Helena did Steven get you that pendant?" The brunette asked the former Witch.
Helena looks down at her pendant with her Key Stone, she places her hand on it and smiles. "Steven got it for me as a prize for winning the shooting range," She explains to her.
"How sweet of him," Wallace crossed his legs, hearing the conversation. "Steven is really thoughtful whenever he gives a gift." The Champion looks at the Mega Pendant, he chuckles noticing that Steven is serious about her.
Flannery looks at Helena, putting herself in the conversation. "The last time he gave a was Brawly here," She looks at the Sky-blue-haired boy, forgetting what he received from him. "Hey Brawly, what did Steven give you again?" She asked.
The Fighting-type trainer smirks, looking at his friends. He flips down the orange-tinted sunglasses over his eyes and showed them off. "My shades, Flannery. He got it for my birthday, and it's rad!"
"They do look cool, Brawly. You're going to wear it when you're at the beach?" Helena asked, holding on to Kirlia.
"That's the plan, Ellie. My hometown Dewford Town is famous for the beaches." Brawly informed his friend. "You would like it there,"
"The time has come for the Gym Battle between Mr. Moore the Lavaridge Town Gym Leader and Steven Stone the Challenger!" A red-haired man in a casual Kimono raised his hand, "The rules are simple like the previous battles, this shall be a three-on-three match. Only the Challenger can switch out Pokemon, once either side's Pokemon is unable to battle the victor shall be decided."
Mr. Moore smiles, "Thank you, son." He appreciates his help in refereeing three Gym Battles. He looks at Steven, wanting to see if he's ready. "Are you ready, Steven? I have granted you three a pass on my Gym Challenge since you are my Granddaughter's friends. However, that's all you'll be getting from me ." He smirks confidently.
Steven placed his hand on his side, "I've been ready since I came to Town. I don't mind if we skip the Gym Challenge." He clenched his fist, grinning at the Gym Leader.
"Now that's the fighting spirit I like to see!" Mr. Moore announced.
Flannery's Father nodded, seeing both sides are ready to battle. "Now that both sides are ready to Battle, please bring out your first Pokemon!"
Steven moved his body to the side, his hand holding a Pokeball. "Alright, Lileep time for a battle!" He extends his arm, tossing the Pokeball.
Lileep was released onto the field, ready to battle. "Lileep!" The Sea Lily Pokemon cried out.
Helena blinks, seeing the odd choice that Steven brought out. "Lileep? Isn't she a Grass/Rock-type?" She asked her friends,
"Kirlia…" The Duel-type nodded, finding it odd to use against a Fire-type Gym.
Wallace held his chin, "Considering Lileep knows a Rock-type move and a Water-type move, Steven knew that she would take normal damage due to her typing." The Champion stated, reading Steven like a book.
Flannery grins, leaning forward in interest. "Type Advantage doesn't matter to my Grandpa one bit. Trust me and Brawly when he's tough."
Mr. Moore smiles, takes out his Pokeball, and throws it at the field. "Magmar, let's go!"
A bipedal duckbilled Pokemon with a body made of fire, flames flickering on his head and tail. "Magmar!" He cried,
"Of course, Grandpa's using Magmar as his first." Flannery smiles, excited to see what Steven has in mind.
Steven knew that Mr. Moore was using Magmar as his first. "Lileep, don't get discouraged. We can win this!" He exclaims,
Lileep nodded, having faith in her trainer's battle strategies. "Lileep!"
Flannery's Father raised his hand, ready to officially begin the battle. "As Pokemon League rules state, the Challenger shall take the first move before the Gym Leader. Now…battle begin!"
Steven/ Lileep vs Mr. Moore/Magmar
"Alright, Lileep let's start off strong!" Steven held out his hand to his Partner. "Use Earth Power!" He shouted,
Lileep pulled back her head and slammed into the ground. "Lileep!"
The ground glowed orange before bursting open with power. The attack hurls at Magmar, about land a hit.
Mr. Moore smiles, looking at his Partner. "Magmar, counter it with a Fire Punch to the field." He ordered,
"Mag…" The Fire-type's fist burst into flames, pulling it back before punching the ground. "MAR!"
The ground below burst into flames, countering the Ground-type move.
Magmar stood before Lileep and Steven after countering their opening move.
"Magmar just counter Earth Power with Fire Punch!" Roxanne exclaims, surprised at the creative actions, "That's smart."
Helena nodded, looking at a shocked Steven and Lileep. "Your Grandfather isn't pulling any punches with Steven." She commented. "He's stronger than the Headmaster,"
"Kirlia…" The Emotions Pokemon added.
Flannery smiles, crossing her arms seeing what her Grandfather did. "Grandpa always used that move when dealing with Ground-type moves," The red-haired trainer stated.
Steven frowns, seeing that Mr. Moore's Magmar could counter the strongest move Lileep. 'Magmar's Fire Punch is strong; Earth Power won't work on him…' An idea crossed his mind,
The Steel-blue haired trainer raised his hand. "Lileep, Earth Power once more!"
"Lil…" The Fossil Pokemon raised her head, before slamming to the ground. "Leep!"
The ground once again burst open, hurling at the Spitfire Pokemon. "Magmar, Fire Punch to the ground again." Mr. Moore shouted.
"Mag…" Magmar repeated his move again, countering Earth Power. "Mar!" He punches the ground, bursting into flames.
"Now, Rock Tomb!" Steven quickly acted.
Lileep cried twirling her head, rocks came from the field in response. "Lileep!" She thrust her head at the Fire-type Pokemon.
The rocks hurled at Magmar, still using Fire Punch to counter Earth Power. "Mag?" Magmar raised his arms, blocking the attack.
Magmar was taking massive damage due to the typing of the Move. "MAGMAR!"
Steven smiles, seeing his plan worked. "Great job, Lileep! Now let's keep up with the speed!" He cried out, "Use Rock Blast!"
Lileep's tendrils glowed orange as a rock formed in the center of her tendrils before releasing a powered rock at Magmar.
"Intercept with Rock Smash, Magmar!" Mr. Moore ordered his Partner to destroy the Rock-type move.
Magmar's fist glowed orange and punched right at the Rock Blast. "Magmar?" His eyes widen when the Sea Lily Pokemon appeared before him.
"Lileep, use Rock Blast once more!" Steven shouted,
"Lil…eep!" The Fossil Pokemon repeated her movement, releasing another powered rock at the opponent.
The attacks landed a critical hit on Magmar, the Fire-type stumbles back and created some room between him and Lileep.
"Magmar, are you alright?" Mr. Moore asked his Pokemon, shaking off the attack.
Magmar stood tall, not backing down after taking a super effective move. "Mag!"
The old Gym Leader smiles, seeing that his Pokemon is ready to battle. "Then use Fire Blast!"
The Spitfire Pokemon's snout began to flame up and released a flaming five-pointed cross. The Fire Blast hurls over at Lileep.
"Lileep use Brine as a counter!" The Steel-blue haired trainer cried out to his Partner. Lileep shot out a ball at the Fire Blast, dispelling the move before it could hit.
Wallace nodded, seeing the quick thinking Steven did. "Using Brine to counter Fire Blast like that is smart." He commented.
"A Water move against a Fire move, Steven prepared for this battle," Roxanne added, "Lileep may have a chance of winning." The brunette saw the chance of Steven winning this round.
Mr. Moore smiles at the quick action that Steven thought of. "Your quick action is impressive. But how long your Lileep can keep that up?" He held out his hand to his Partner. "Magmar, charge in with a Fire Punch!"
"Magmar!" The Fire-type lit his fist on fire and rushed towards the Fossil Pokemon.
Magmar was on top of Lileep, about to do a finishing blow. "Lileep, dodge it!" Steven cried out.
"Lil-EEP!?" Lileep manages to dodge Magmar's Fire Punch when he suddenly faced her.
"Good, now Fire Blast!" Magmar shot out the same flaming five-pointed cross at Lileep, landing a critical hit.
Everyone in the stands leans forward, seeing the smoke where Lileep was. "That was a direct hit!" Helena cried out,
Brawly raised his fist, "Come on, Lileep, I know you can tank that!"
Lileep fell to the ground, however, she wasn't done yet., "Lileep!" She cried, still having the spark of continuing in her.
Steven smiles at his Partner still wanting to battle, "Alright Lileep! If you're not done, then I'm not either," He held out his hand, "Let's use Earth Power once more!"
"Li…leep!" Lileep slams her head into causing the ground to burst.
"Not so fast, I've gotten an idea of your strategy Steven." Mr. Moore grins, "Magmar dodge it!"
Magmar rolled to the side, evading the Earth Power. "Then use Fire Punch!"
"Mag!" The Spitfire Pokemon rushed at Lileep while his fist lit on fire.
Steven held out his hand to his Partner, "Lileep, Brine!"
The Sea Lily Pokemon shot out a ball of water at the Fire Punch, extinguishing it.
Mr. Moore grins, looking at the two Pokemon. "Now Rock Smash!"
"Magmar!" The Spitfire Pokemon's arm glowed orange, and uppercut Lileep by the head.
Lileep was sent back, landing in front of Steven. "Lileep! Are you okay-" Steven paused, seeing his Pokemon's eyes were spiraling.
Flannery's Father raised the flag at his Father's side of the field. "Lileep is unable to battle, the victor goes to Magmar!"
Steven smiles softly, taking out Lileep's Pokeball. "Lileep, you did a good job. Take a good rest." He smiles, taking out his next Pokemon. "Aron, you're up!"
The Steel-blue haired trainer released his new Pokemon onto the field, "Aron!" The Iron Armor Pokemon cried, ready to battle.
"Sending in Aron, a Steel and Rock type. It's the same with Lileep," Helena commented on the choice of Pokemon Steven made.
Kirlia nodded, watching how Steven would play this out.
"Steven is still going with the Rock-type Advantage, understandable when the only Pokemon with a Water-type move was Lileep," Flannery commented, seeing little he can do to counter her Grandfather's Pokemon.
"Battle Begin!" Flannery's Father announced, seeing Steven bring out his next Pokemon.
"Aron, Rock Tomb!" Steven cried out to his new Pokemon.
Aron raised his frontal body before slamming his body to the ground. Soon rocks lifted from the ground before hurling at Magmar.
Mr. Moore held out his hand at Magmar. "Magmar, Rock Smash through Aron's Rock Tomb!" He ordered.
Magmar's arm glowed orange and leaps forward. "MAR!" He punches through the Rock Tomb just as he did with Lileep's Rock Tomb.
The Fire-type burst through the rocks, but when he got through everyone, there was a hole in the field.
Magmar landed just on the edge of the hole in the field, now on guard. "Calm yourself, Magmar. Pay attention to your surroundings," The old Gym Leader advises his Pokemon.
Steven smiles, "Now, Dig!" He cried out.
The ground below Magmar's feet cracked before bursting open. Aron leaps out from the ground causing Magmar to fly up. "Let's end this, Aron Water Pulse!"
"He knows a Water-type move!?" Wallace exclaims, surprised to see the Iron Armor Pokemon's secret.
"Ar…"Water formed in Aron's mouth before releasing a ball of water at Magmar.
"Magmar dodge it!" Mr. Moore shouted at his Partner, but the attack was quick and super effective. A small explosion appeared where Magmar was, and his body fell to the ground right before Mr. Moore.
The old Gym Leader looks at his Partner, seeing spirals in his eyes.
The Referee raised his flag to his father's side of the Battlefield. "Magmar is unable to Battle, the victor goes to Aron!"
Steven punched the air at his and Aron's victory. "Yeah, way to go Aron!" The young trainer cheered for his new Pokemon.
"They now have two Pokemon left, an even footing," Roxanne stated, happy that Steven got himself a win.
Helena nodded, "Doesn't Steven have three Pokemon in his team?" The former Witch asked her friends. "Lileep is out for the count, Aron is on the field and Metang hasn't come out yet."
Brawly nodded, understanding what his black-haired friend is saying. "Even if Steven has one Pokemon left, I'm sure Metang will be his ace in the hole." The Sky-blue haired boy commented.
Mr. Moore calls back Magmar, smiling at his Partner holding out this long. "Well done, my friend. Take a good rest." He places back Magmar's Pokeball back in his belt before taking out his next Pokemon.
"Numel! You're next!" The old Gym Leader tosses his Pokeball onto the field,
The Pokeball released a camel-like Pokemon with a hole on her hump, "Numel!"
"Numel! That's Grandpa's second strongest Pokemon," Flannery stated,
Helena took out her Rotom Phone, pointing it at the new Pokemon she saw. "Numel…"
The Rotom Phone showed an image of a Numel with their information.
-ZZZ- Numel, the Numb Pokemon. A Fire and Ground-Type Pokemon. -ZZZ-
-ZZZ- Numel stores magma of almost 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit within its body. If it gets wet, the magma cools and hardens. In that event, the Pokémon's body grows heavy, and its movements become sluggish. -ZZZ-
"So it's a Fire-type and a Ground-type. Steven might have some trouble with this one." Helena commented, knowing that Numel has the advantage against Aron.
"Kirlia," Kirlia agreed with her Partner on that matter.
"Battle Begin!" The Referee announced.
Steven/ Aron vs Mr. Moore/ Numel
Steven took a deep breath before looking back at the Battlefield, "Aron Rock Tomb!"
"Ar!" Aron lifts his front body and smashes the ground; rocks once again lift to the air before hurling at Numel.
"Numel Double Team," Mr. Moore ordered his Partner,
"Num!" Suddenly a group of Numel appeared on the field, the Rock Tomb managed to hit the copies but not the real ones.
Aron looked around as more copies of Numel appeared before him. "Aron, watch carefully at Numel's movements!" Steven cried out.
Aron nodded, "Aron," He keeps an eye out, following his trainer's orders.
Mr. Moore grins, opening his hands. "Now Numel, use Flame Wheel,"
The copies of Numel all cried, confusing Aron on which one was real, however, Steven saw one that was spewing out smoke from the hole on his hump. "Aron, the one on the right! That's the real one!" He cried out,
The Iron Armor Pokemon turns to the right side and saw the real Numel's body bursting into flames. "Numel!" A fire wheel hurls at him.
"Aron, Dig!" Steven cried out,
"Aron!" Aron starts digging into the Battlefield and evaded the Flame Wheel.
Numel's Flame Wheel went passed Aron's hole; she looks around for the opponent. "Numel?"
Mr. Moore chuckles, seeing that Steven had Aron use Dig to dodge the Flamme Wheel. "Interesting move, but don't get too cocky, Steven." His eyes looked at the Numb Pokemon. "Numel, Earthquake!"
The Numb Pokemon raised her body and slams her hooves to the ground. "Numel!"
The Battlefield began to shake, causing Steven to hold his footing. He looks at the field, seeing the Earthquake still going on. "Stay strong, Aron…" He gritted his teeth, having faith that his Pokemon could withstand Numel's Earthquake.
"This is looking bad; Earthquake is a Ground-type move," Helena stated, seeing Aron is at a disadvantage.
Roxanne nodded, confirming what her black-haired friend said. "Steven is in a pickle; I wonder if he has a strategy for this…"
Soon the Earthquake stops, revealing a silent Battlefield. "It stop," Brawly stated, looking at the hole that Aron dug. "Is Aron-"
"Look!" Flannery pointed to the ground beneath Numel.
"Num?" Numel saw the cracks beneath her hooves, suddenly the ground burst to reveal Aron using Iron Head.
"Numel!" Mr. Moore exclaims, seeing his Pokemon taking a direct hit from the bottom.
Numel landed before the old Gym Leader, struggling to get up. "Numel, can you still battle?" He asked.
The Numb Pokemon nodded to her long-time friend, still able to go. "Num,"
Mr. Moore smiles, looking up at Steven and Aron. "I'm curious, Aron was underground. Earthquake should take him out with ease."
Steven chuckles, crossing his arms. He looks at the Gym Leader with a prideful smirk. "Well, since Aron lived in the undergrounds of the Valley of Steel, I figured that he must experience Earthquake before." He explains his trust in his new Pokemon. "So when your Numel used Earthquake, Aron can take that from there."
"A trust between Pokemon and trainer, that is something we strive for." Mr. Moore smiles, seeing this young trainer is more mature than he seems to be. "I'm impressed, Steven. I honestly can say you all make me proud as a Gym Leader."
Steven nodded, hearing his compliments. "Thanks, Mr. Moore."
Mr. Moore chuckles and held out his hand. "Then let's end this match, Numel use Overheat!"
Numel raised her head, her body began to heat up. "Num…" She opens her mouth, releasing a blast of yellow-white flames. "EEEELLL!"
"Aron, Rock Tomb!" Steven cried out.
"Ar…" Aron once again uses Rock Tomb, rocks were hurled at the Overheat. They pass through it and manage to hit Numel.
"NUM!" The Rock Tomb landed right at Numel, causing a small explosion.
Everyone was on edge, waiting for the outcome. Once the dust cleared, Numel's eyes were spiraling.
Flannery's Father raised the flag towards his Father once more, "Numel is unable to battle! The victor goes to Aron!"
Steven smiles at another victory. He clenches his fist, excited at their second win. "Way to go Aron!" He cheered for his newest Partner as his well-done job.
Aron turns around, jumping excitedly. "Ar, Aron!"
"Kirl, Kirl, Kirlia!" Kirlia waved her excitedly for Steven's victory.
Helena looks at her friends, sharing the same excited expression for Steven's second win. "Seems like Steven is winning this; your Grandpa has one more Pokemon left." She stated, but she was worried about the last Pokemon.
"Of course, the last Pokemon is Mr. Moore's ace, the strongest Pokemon out of his team," Wallace commented, seeing it twice already.
Both Flannery and Brawly nodded, knowing which Pokemon the Gym Leader is going to choose. "Typhlosion," The two trainers said in unison.
Mr. Moore chuckles, seeing he's at his last Pokemon. He looks at Steven, seemingly to be ready for his next Pokemon. "I must say, you are strong. You formulate a strategy quickly and trust in your Pokemon to do whatever is necessary." He smiles, "A fine example of a Pokemon trainer."
Steven nodded, "You're full of compliments, Mr. Moore."
"Of course, you, Brawly, and Flannery have matured to respectable trainers." Mr. Moore stated, feeling honored to Battle with the three of them. "Know that I'll always remember this Battle," He smirks at his Granddaughter and Brawley,
Mr. Moore returns his attention back to Steven, taking out his last Pokeball. "Alright, Typhlosion it's your turn!" He tosses the Pokeball onto the Battlefield.
The Pokeball released a bipedal hedgehog Pokemon with flames bursting from the nape of his neck. He roars as flames burst from the nape of his neck.
"Typhlosion…" Steven saw the Volcano Pokemon giving off an intimidating presence. He looks at Aron who was a bit intimidated by the power Mr. Moore's Pokemon was giving. "Aron, we can beat him."
Aron looks back at his trainer, never once doubting his orders. "Aron!" He nods, ready to continue.
Steven/ Aron vs Mr. Moore/ Typhlosion
Steven smiles at his new Pokemon having this much trust in him. "Alright, Aron use Rock Tomb!" He held out his hand.
Aron used Rock Tomb, hurling rocks at the Fire-type Pokemon. "Aron!"
Mr. Moore smiles, closing his eyes. "Typhlosion, Dynamic Punch."
Typhlosion pulls back his fist, gaining a brownish-orange aura before punching through the Rock Tomb. The Volcano Pokemon roars after demolishing Aron's attack.
"W-What?!" Both Steven and Aron's eyes widen at how powerful Typhlosion's Dynamic Punch.
"Now, use Overheat." The old Gym Leader smirks, already having checkmate.
Typhlosion went on fours and roared; the flames on his neck grew bigger. He opens his mouth and released a yellow-orange fire at Aron.
"Aron, use Dig to dodge it-"
"It's too late,"
The attack landed a direct hit at Aron, causing him to be blasted out of the Battlefield.
Helena and the others looked at where Aron was, seeing the powerful Fire-type move. "T-That was some Overheat," Roxanne stated, never seeing Typhlosion's Overheat at this range.
"Seems like Grandpa is going all out for Steven," Flannery commented, seeing this attack many times before.
"Didn't he use the same moves when you two battled him, Flannery?" Wallace asked his red-haired friend.
Brawly nodded, confirming what the teal-haired Champion said. "Yeah, I guess Steven is the acceptation, after all, he did survive in the Valley of Steel with Helena."
Helena hold onto Kirlia tightly, a bit worried for her friend. "They both have one Pokemon left, this is going to be tough for Steven." The former Witch stated,
Kirlia just nodded, seeing this Battle will take all of Steven's strength just to win.
Flannery's Father rushed over to Aron, seeing that the Iron Armor Pokemon's eyes were spiraling. He raised his flag to his Father, "Aron is unable to Battle, the victor goes to Typhlosion!"
Steven held out Aron's Pokeball, smiling that he manage to pull through to the end. "Great job, Aron. You did well for your first Gym Battle." A red beam went to his new Pokemon, returning him to his Pokeball.
"Well, Steven? We're both on our last Pokemon," Mr. Moore said to his Challenger, "Are you ready who will win?" He asked.
Steven looks at Mr. Moore, knowing this was coming. His next Pokemon is his Partner, Metang. Though evolved, he knew that his Typing will be at a disadvantage.
He took out his Pokeball, gripping it tight. "Metang, let's make this count!" Steven tossed his Partner's Pokeball onto the field, releasing the Shiny Metal Claw Pokemon.
"Metang!" The Duel-type cried, ready to face Typhlosion.
