CH 3
Seven months later Mike watches as the chief of the navy presents Kate her two thousand and three sword award even though it's two thousand and four. Kate told Mike just before Christmas that she won it and he was happy for her and they let their family know the news.
Mike smiled as he watched the chief of the navy present Kate her award in person since a number of sailors and officers were receiving a number of awards in Canberra. Mike noticed the look on her face while the ceremony carried on while she and others were standing at attention. Mike notices she looks at him then looks down then back to his face. Mike was wondering what she was trying to tell him, then he noticed water flowing down her legs and onto the carpet. He relies on what was happening.
"Oh no," Mike said out loud.
"SHH" Mike turned to see it was a commodore from his shoulder rank.
"sorry sir, i'm worried about my wife lieutenant Flynn" Mike said quietly
"your wife, why are you worried about her lieutenant commander Flynn"
"She went into labor sir, her water broke" the commodore and others heard what was said, all looking at Kate and saw the wet patch on the floor and the look on her face and the way she was breathing.
"With her water breaking and the timing of the contractions, she is going to give birth from five minutes to twenty, I'll go and call for an ambulance sir" , the lieutenant said before leaving the room.
Word slowly got around to the guests about Kate and everyone's eyes were on her. Ten minutes later Mike notices the look on her face and he mouth the words
'what is it?' Kate manages to blink morse code to Mike, but others notice she was blinking and realize it was morse code.
'sorry Mike, crowning' Mike looked shocked then he saw Kate move her legs apart as she let out a scream.
Mike got up and ran over to Kate as the chief of the navy stopped talking and looked over to where the scream was when he saw an officer running over to the woman. Everyone was shocked when they saw Kate saying
"Pull my underwear down, oh god the baby is coming" Mike crouches down and puts his hands up her skirt and pulls her underwear down and off.
"Baby is coming out" Kate said screaming. Mike put his hand up her dress
"I got him" then everyone saw Mike pull the baby out from under Kate's skirt when the baby wailed as it took its first breath.
"Kate it a boy" he looked up at her as she slowly collapsed onto the floor close to Mike.
"Our son"
"Yeah undo your jacket" Kate undid her jacket and pulled it apart revealing her maternity bra. Mike laid their son on her chest then moved to kiss her. "you were amazing Kate"
"so are you" then everyone heard.
"This is the first time in navy history that a pregnant sailor or officer goes into labor and gives birth while in the middle of an award ceremony. Especially the winner of the sword award. congratulations to you lieutenant Flynn and your husband"
then the paramedics arrive and they lift Kate onto the gurney while Mike picks up Kate's hat, shoes and panties then follow the paramedics out to the ambulance. On the way to the hospital the placter came out.
"Mike we haven't got any baby clothes" mike smile
"don't worry, I'll go and buy some" the paramedic looked at them.
"I wasn't due till next week and we are here for a couple of days. Kate and I station in Perth"
"Oh this must of been some surprise then"
"It is, our son sure knows when to make his grand entrance and timing is terrible" Kate said looking down at her son.
"If you two don't mind me asking why are you here"
"Kate won a sword award, the chief of the navy presented it to her when she went into labor" Mike said.
"Wow, congratulations."
"Thank you," Kate said.
When they arrived at the hospital the staff cleaned Kate and their son up and checked them both over. Hour later Mike was sitting on the side of the bed watching Kate as she breastfed her son.
"I should call the family and tell them"
"Yeah you should Mike before they hear it on the news"
Mike got his phone out and called his parents to give them the news knowing that they would call other family members. when finish on the phone he sat back on the bed just as Kate started burping their son.
"Mum is going to let the rest of the family know"
"Ok, Now you will have to get our son some clothes to wear the day we leave"
"True, leave it with me." Hour later Mike walks out of the hospital while making a phone call.
The next day when Mike walked into Kate's room he was holding a bag in one hand and roses in another. "Oh Mike they are beautiful, thank you"
"I knew you would love them. How was your first night"
"It was ok, we woke up three times to feed and change our son"
"OK" Mike passed Kate a bag then he put the roses on top of the draw then he looked over to the bassinet seeing their son sleep. He turned when he saw Kate getting out of bed.
"Kate why are you getting out of bed?" Kate smiles and leans over to kiss him.
"I need to use the head and have a shower i hate wearing hospital gowns"
"Ok need any help" He said with a twinkle in his eyes.
"No i can manage thank you, Any way i just gave birth to our son so you can wait for six weeks, by then i would have fully recovered"
"Six weeks, well i'm sure we can do other things till then" Kate laughs as she walks towards the door
"We shall see Mike." Kate closed the door behind her.
Twenty minutes later Kate was sitting up in bed feeding their son when there was a knock on the door. Mike passed Kate a cot size cotton sheet so she could cover herself up while breastfeeding while Mike went and opened the door.
"Yes Leader" Mike said when he saw the guy in his uniform.
"Commander Flynn, I'm lead shipman Thomas. I was at the award ceremony yesterday taking photos for the navy paper"
"Ok why are you telling me this"
"Sir, with you and lieutenant Flynn permission if I can take a photo of you two and your son for the paper with your son's name. My editor said it would make the front page"
"Mike is everything ok" Kate called out. Mike stepped back.
"A photographer from the navy news wanted to take a photo of the three of us after what happened yesterday" Kate thought about it.
"It's fine by me, Mike, after all. all the officers would have heard about what happened yesterday" Kate said, smiling.
"Are you sure Kate"
"Yes if you want to as well" Mike looked at them both then turned to the young guy.
"come back in ten minutes"
"I'm on a dead line sir"
"Kate breastfeeding at the moment"
"Oh, ok, I understand. i'll come back then sir" he saluted Mike which he did in return before Mike stood back closing the door and turning to Kate who was still breastfeeding.
"You know we will be on the front page Kate"
"So, at least every one would know what our son looks like and his name"
"True"
After Kate finished breast feeding and burping him. Mike changed his clothes for the photo. Kate looked at the clothes.
"Mike they look like the ones from home"
"they are. I asked Trish to get them and have them courier overnight to our hotel. I spoke to the manager and he let me stay longer because of what happened yesterday"
"that was good of him"
"He told me it was not the first time a couple from the arm forces had to extend their stay"
"Wow really, I guess he is used to it"
"Yes he is."
Ten minutes later the photographer was taking photos of the three of them. After the photos were taken he thanked them both before leaving. Then a reporter from the Canberra papers showed up to ask them questions and had photos taken before she left. Mike spent the day with Kate then left when visiting hours were over.
The next morning Mike walks into Kate's room holding the newspaper in hand. "Morning, how did you sleep last night"
"Same as the night before. it will take a while for me to get used to it." He gives her a kiss since she was breastfeeding
"True, here it is on the front page" he opens it up and shows Kate. It was a photo of the three of them. Kate read out loud.
"Two thousand and three sword award winner lieutenant Kate flynn gives birth during the award ceremony" she read out the headlines then she read under the photo.
"Lieutenant Kate Flynn who was the two thousand and three winner of the sword award went into early labor during the awards and promotion ceremony. During the chief of the navy speach Lieutenant Flynn let out a scream and her husband lieutenant commander Mike Flynn ran over to his wife and removed her panties and managed to catch the baby as it was almost out. The lieutenant coloped on the floor close to her husband's side. The paramedic showed up a couple minutes later to take the family to hospital where mother and son were. They name their son Mike Connor Flynn Junior after his father who weighed in at six pounds, eleven of the navy said 'This is the first time in navy history that a pregnant sailor or officer goes into labor and gives birth while in the middle of an award ceremony. Especially the winner of the sword award. congratulations to you lieutenant Flynn and your husband' Both couples are stationed at Fleet command west in Perth" Kate read out loud.
then she put the paper down and looked up at Mike. "Well now everyone from Canberra knows about what happened yesterday," Mike said.
"Yeah they do." Two days later Mike showed up to the hospital to pick up Kate and their son MJ and fly back to Perth.
When they walk inside their apartment "Home sweet home" Kate said.
"It sure is Kate." After sorting out their bags, MJ was sleeping.
Mike went through their mail while Kate made them a drink. "Kate," she turned to Mike, seeing him showing her the navy news paper that they get once a month.
she walked over to have a closer look. It was a photo of the three of them with headlines. 'Sword award winner gives birth during award ceremony. more on page two' Mike opens it and turns to page two. and show Kate it was a photo of Kate receiving her award, one of Mike on his knees in front of Kate with his hand up her skirt as she was screaming.
The next photo shows Mike holding their son in his hand. The next photo shows Kate collapsing next to Mike. The next photo shows their son on Kate's chest and Mike kissing Kate. in the next photo was of Kate on the gurney with MJ still on her chest covered by a sheet and Mike next to them smiling at them.
then it shows three different photos from the hospital room. one where MJ was holding onto Mike and Kate's finger while Mike and Kate were looking down at MJ. one where Mike and Kate kiss and one where it's just Mike and Kate close together looking at each other while smiling and the look of love they were showing each other.
Then there was a write up about what happened at the ceremony and how the Flynn family made navy history when Kate went into labor and that she was a week early. After they finish reading it. Mike looks at Kate and kisses her.
"Now everyone will know what our son looks like"
"True Mike"
Two weeks later there was a knock on the door so Mike went to see who it was. "Brian, Janet, come on in this is a surprise"
"Hi Mike, how's Kate?" Janet asked as they both hugged and shook Brian hand and smiled at the twins.
"She is great, she is breastfeeding at the moment, and wants a brew or cold drink"
"A brew Thanks," Brian said.
"cold drink thanks Mike"
"How about you two"
"Cold drink, thanks," Patrick said.
"Cold drink, thanks," Patricia said.
"Ok, come and make yourselves at home. I'll let Kate know that you're here" He walked towards the open door and walked in
"Mike who's at the door?"
"Brian, Janet and kids are here" Kate was shocked.
"they are here"
"Yeah, i'm going to get them a drink, they know that you're breastfeeding at the moment"
"Ok" Mike walked out and went to make them a drink while talking to them.
When Kake walked into the living room she was holding MJ in her arms. "This is a surprise," Kate said.
"We thought you might like the surprise Kate" Janet said.
"I do, want to hold him"
"love to" Kate walks over and places MJ in Janet's arms. "He is gorgeous," Janet said.
"I know" Kate sat down next to Mike.
"Kate Mike there's something we need to tell you both" Brian said.
"What's wrong?" Kate said.
"We got a letter from the clinic last month, they wanted us to have a DNA test done"
"What, why?" mike asked.
"The day we had the implantation done, there was a mix up between the sperm." Brian said.
"what, how can a clinic screw something like that up?" Mike said.
"they were busy that day in the labs, but don't worry. I had the test done, I'm the biological father. so that narrow it down for them"
"Why telling us?" Kate said.
"Cause it's going to be on the news in the next couple of days hoping that six other couples will see the news and get tested themselves" Janet said.
"Ok I understand. I hope that they can find out which two couples it is"
"Same here" Janet said. They stayed for the day having dinner together. they left later that night after giving each other hugs before leaving.
