CH 9
Two hours later after Kate had given birth, she had her tubes cut and now Mike was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at Kate as she held onto the twins when Mike got his phone out and made a call. "hello"
"mum it Mike"
"Oh my, is Kate ok, are the boys ok"
"Yes mum have you got on speaker phone"
"Yes why"
"Well at ten minutes to ten Connor Micheal Flynn was born weighing five pounds, two ounces"
"Really a good size from a prem Mike"
"Yes it is"
"And what is the name of your other son?" Mike smiles as he looks at Kate
"At one minute past ten five pound four ounce….." Mike left them hanging
"come on dad, what's the baby's name?" Ryan yelled out.
"Kate cares to tell them," Mike said as he moved his phone closer to her.
"Sure, the baby name is…. Emma , Kate flynn" mike and Kate waited for a reply when they heard.
"Yes, yes, yes a girl, woohoo" Duncan said yelling excitedly which made Mike and Kate laugh.
"A girl oh my a girl but you said it was a boy." mike father said.
"I know dad, but it's a girl, trust me dad"
"That wonderful news, son Kate"
"Thanks dad," Kate said.
"I better hang up. I'll be home within the hour"
"Ok son that is great news"
"Yes it is." then they hung up since everyone was talking at once. Mike picked up Emma and held on to her while she was sleeping.
"I'll bring a bag tomorrow"
"It's in the closet. I finished it up a couple weeks ago just in case I give birth early."
"Great idea, now I'll have to change the color of Emma's crib" Kate smiled.
"Lucky it still in its package and I'm sure the store manager will let you swap the color items"
"I hope you're right Kate"
"I'm sure, he, she will"
When Mike walked in the door it was after one in the morning. He went to bed where he missed having Kate next to him but smiling, knowing that in a couple of months they will be able to make love again.
The next morning Mike walked into the west navy base and walked up to captain Black who was talking to a midshipman. "Lieutenant command Flynn, what can I do for you?" They saulted each other.
"I'm here to inform you sir that Kate… lieutenant flynn was admitted to hospital last night after going into premature labor"
"Is she alright"
"Yes sir, her and twins are fine. Kate gave birth to twins last night"
"Last night she was not due for another six weeks"
"I know that sir, the twins are fine and healthy"
"That is good news. I'll sort out the paperwork for her early maternity leave, does commander Jackson know about this"
"No sir, i'll be heading to the ship after being here sir to let him know"
"You don't have to, he just walks in" Mike turns to see his CO walk in and over to them.
"Mike"
"sir"
"Why are you here"
"I'm here to let Captain black know that Kate went into premature labor last night, she gave birth to twins"
"Twins are early"
"Yes sir, but they are fine and healthy"
"congratulations."
"Thank you sir"
"since your wife gave birth sooner, you can take your leave from today"
"thank you sir"
"What did you name your sons?" Captain asked.
"first born Connor Micheal Flynn"
"Great irish names" Captain said
"Thank you sir, as for our second child, we were shocked when…. she was born." Mike said smiling as he looked at the shocked looks on there faces
"she a girl"
"Yes Emma Kate flynn. We were shocked but we are happy"
"It would be for any couples Mike, that is a shocking surprise"
"Yes sir, the family was also shocked but happy for us"
"That is great news Mike" they talk for another couple of minutes before Mike walks out of the navy base.
He returned home where he got change and went to talk to the family.
Later that afternoon The family walk into Kate room where she was resting in bed and twins are in their bassinets sleeping. Kate smiles when Mike walks in with her bag and red roses.
"Mike they are beautiful" he gives her a kiss.
"Just like you, here is your bag"
"Thank you" He put it away while the family commented on the twins and MJ saw them and pointed his finger at them.
They stayed for an hour then left so Kate could breastfeed and get some rest.
The next day when Mike walked into Kate's room he was surprised when he saw cards, balloons and bouquets of flowers. "Wow Kate where did these come from?"
"Fleet command, crew of HMAS Darwin, Perth navy base. Brian and Janet" Kate pointed out.
"Sounds like word has traveled fast"
"It has Mike" Mike read each of the cards then he looked at the twins then turned and stepped closer to Kate bed where he gave her a kiss.
"How did you sleep last night?"
"Great, you"
"Great also" he sat on the edge of the bed where they talked.
Mike helps change the kids' diapers and watch Kate as she breastfeeds them. Mike showed up every day for two weeks to spend time with Kate and the twins. He was allowed to show up in the morning so he could help bath them and spend time with Kate.
the day that Kate and kids could go home. Mike was looking forward to having them home. When Kate walks in the door carrying two bags. "It's great to be home," she said.
"It's great that you are home Kate" Mike said as he carried the two baby car seats.
"Yeah, now it's time to adjust"
"We can do it Kate"
"Yeah I know"
When Ryan and Duncan arrived home from school they gave Kate a hug. "Where's Connor and Emma?" Ryan asked.
"sleeping i just finished feeding them fifteen minutes ago"
"Ok, where dad?"
"Shopping, so any homework"
"Yeah, can you help us"
"Sure, go and get everything set up at the breakfast bar while I'm using the head."
"Ok thanks mum" Kate went to use the toilet then she got the boys a drink and helped them with their homework.
When Mike arrived home, he was carrying grocery bags and MJ. Kate walked over to them "mummy" MJ said smiling.
"Hello sweetie miss you" She took MJ from Mike's arms so she could give him a hug and kiss on his cheek.
"Have you been a good boy?" He nodded.
"That's great." Kate talks to MJ while Mike takes care of the groceries while smiling as he listens to Kate talk to the boys.
Later that night when they were in bed. Kate snuggled up to Mike's side. "I miss this," Kate said.
"miss what"
"This snuggling up to your side, able to give you a kiss where as before i struggled"
"True, it's great to have you home and in bed with me"
"Same here Mike" they both kissed which became passionate till they heard one of the twins waking up.
"Duty calls," Kate said as she rolled over and got out of bed.
"True, don't be too long," Mike said.
"I won't," Kate said smiling as she walked out of their bedroom.
Mike and Kate manage to get into a routine for the next three weeks till Mike got a phone call from Captain Black, so he went to see him while Kate was sleeping cause kids wake up every two hours for a feed and change. When Mike returned back home he walked up and into their bedroom and walked over and sat on the edge of the bed watching Kate sleep.
When Kate opens her eyes, she puts her hand on his leg while looking at him. "Mike what's wrong"
"I've been asked to fly to Cairns in two days."
"Cairns why"
"Fleet command wants me to be temporary captain of one of the patrol boats for a patrol or two, hopefully they will find a new captain by then."
"How long Mike?" Mike put his hand on top of her's.
"The first patrol is for three weeks, the second is for a month"
"Seven weeks, Mike"
"I know Kate, I told the captain that I'm still on maternity leave. He knows that and so does fleet command. they wouldn't have done this unless i'm the last name on the list"
"I understand Mike, we do as we are told, go where we go and learn to like it"
"True." Kate sat up and they hugged and kissed.
"We used to be a part of Mike"
"I know Kate we can do it"
"Yeah we can. We better let the boys know tonight"
"good idea" They kiss once more. That night they told Ryan and Duncan so they could understand.
"Seven plus weeks, that's a long time" Ryan said.
"I know it will be, but hopefully fleet command will have someone when I return from the first patrol," Mike said.
"I hope so too dad, in the meantime we will help mum with the kids" Ryan said.
"I know you both will Ryan." Mike gives them both a hug while looking at Kate.
Two days later Mike gives the boys a hug since the twins are sleeping then he gives Kate a hug and kiss. "Call me," Kate said.
"I will, love you"
"Love you Mike and i'm going to miss you"
"I'm going to miss you too" they hug and kiss once more before Mike gets into the car that the navy sent to their place so they can take him to the airport.
"Fair winds," Kate said. Mike smiled as he blew her a kiss, which she did in return just as the car drove away.
"don't worry mum Dad will be back before you know it"
"True" they walk back inside just as they heard one of the twins waking up.
When Mike arrived in Cairns, he smiled when he saw Stewart at the airport. "mike"
"Stewart, thanks for letting me stay at your place for the night"
"no worries, how is Kate and the kids"
"Great, twins growing up fast, i'm going to miss out a lot in the next couple of months"
"So long as Kate takes photos for you to see, it will be ok"
"Yeah" they talk as they walk towards the exits.
The next morning a driver picked Mike up from Stewart place and took him to NAVCOM. when he walks into the ball pen he walks up to the CO. "commander Marshal" he turned to see Mike saluting him which he did in return
"Lieutenant commander Mike Flynn it great to see you, come into my office" Steve said as they shook hands. They walked into Steve's office and sat down.
"It has been a long time Mike"
"Yes it has been Steve, I didn't know you were posted here"
"Six months ago"
"Ok, different to Sydney." Steve smiled
"Yes it's a lot hotter up this way"
"Yes it is, how the family"
"Great, I'm going to be a grandfather in five months"
"A grandfather, so John and Joan are expecting"
"Yes they are, talk about kids, I heard rumors going around that you got full custody of Maxine white two boys." Mike sat back in his chair.
"Steve, what other rumors have been going around about my private life"
"Mike"
"Steve tell me and I can tell you if it is true or not"
"Ok did you sleep with Maxine White"
"No, it's not true."
"Then how come the rumors said that you are the boy's father?" Mike took a deep breath and let it out.
"Yes I am the boy's father Steve, but Maxine isn't the boy's biological mother"
"what, this is confusing"
"I'll explain it to you Steve"
"Ok" Mike told Steve everything, including who the biological mother is of the boys. By the time he finished telling Steve, he was shocked.
"My god Mike that is unbelievable"
"It is true Steve and it has been a nightmare for all concerned"
"It sounds like it"
"Yeah, now you know what really happened"
"It's different to what I've been hearing"
"Now you know. so back to business, which ship am i on"
"You on Hammersley Mike" Mike raises his eyebrows
"Hammersley when is she due for decommission?"
"Two years"
"Wow, it has been a long time since I was on board Hammersley"
"You used to serve on Hammersley"
"Yeah my first posting as a midshipman"
"Really well it's good to know that you have been on patrol boats Mike"
"same here"
They talk for another ten minutes before they walk out of Steve's office and NAVCOM. When the car stopped on the dock Steve and Mike got out of the car and the driver got Mike a briefcase and sea bags and passed it to him and saluted each other. Mike followed Steve onto Hammersley where the crew was waiting.
"Hammersley Crew this is lieutenant commander Mike Flynn he is going to be your temporary captain till a new captain has been found."
"It's good to serve back on Hammersley once again. It was my first posting here as a midshipman. Plus I'll be looking forward to getting to know you all during the next three weeks, Hammersley dismiss" Mike said.
they all turn one way then they move around while relaxing. Some of them step forward and introduce themselves to Mike before heading to the hatch. Mike and Steve turned to each other and saluted.
"Fair winds Mike"
"Thank you Steve" Steve walks back onto the dock while Mike walks towards the hatch while talking to two of the crew members.
Twenty minutes later Hammersley left port for its three week patrol.
