Season 2: Episode 6

Carl sighed as he finished his homework, he shook his head as he looked out the window, there wasn't much to see due it being night, but regardless he wasn't really seeing outside. His mind was racing and dwelling on his suspicions and worries and, of all things at this time, Jamie.

'I've really got to stop obsessing over this, we need to calm down and try and let things progress naturally.' He told himself.

He was startled out of his thoughts by a knock at the door to his bedroom. He turned in surprise.

"Carl."

He stood up, replying. "Dad, what's going on?"

Rick entered the room and Carl was instantly on guard, seeing the worried and tense look on his dad's face. That combined with the fact that his dad was starting to get a heavy beard was a sure sign the case was getting to him and starting to make him even more concerned.

"There's been a development in the case." Rick told him quickly. "I know that you tell your friends what you can about things like this."

Carl started to quickly respond. "Wait a minute dad, I swear, I don't-"

"I know, I know." Rick reassured him. "The reason I'm bringing this up is I want you to pass on a warning to your friends, and heed it yourself."

"A warning?" Carl echoed, now even more worried.

Rick nodded. "I'm afraid so. You all need to stay out of the woods around town at all costs. We've narrowed things down enough that we can be absolutely certain of one thing. Whoever is behind what happened to Lizzie and the others, is in there, that's his hunting ground."

Carl swallowed nervously, as the more he thought about it and considered the connections between the cases, he could agree with his dad and knew that this was a very serious situation.

Sure enough, at school the next day, the rest of the group all immediately noticed Carl was on edge and certainly very worried about something.

"Carl?" Beth queried after they had all shared a look. "Are you okay?"

Carl sighed and shook his head. "The investigation into what happened to Lizzie, as well as you guys is still ongoing."

He addressed Beth, Mikey and Laurel when he said that.

"We know that, but...something's happened, hasn't it?" Laurel replied.

"Yeah." Carl admitted. "There's been a development in the case. Things have changed now that this FBI woman has joined the investigation. Shane's in a bad mood about it, but Dad's agreed to work with her, which I think is what's led to them getting some results."

"There's been results?" Mikey gasped. "Oh sorry, you...you probably can't-"

"You're right, but there are some things I can and that's what bothered me." Carl explained. "Things that dad said that I need to share with you guys."

They watched him warily, noting his nervousness and knew right away that whatever he had to say, it was also something that had spooked his dad.

Carl finally revealed. "According to my dad, the way you guys were all kidnapped, namely where you were kidnapped, along with the dumping ground. It's quite clear that whoever is behind this is hiding in the woods, so we need to stay the hell away from there."

They fell into silence at that, clearly in shock.

"Wait a minute, seriously-" Enid gasped. "Then...wait, that abandoned barn we found when were part of the searches, you don't think?"

She didn't need to finish, it was clear they were all wondering that too, what if that barn was where the man was hiding. But their earlier search of the barn had proved fruitless, there was nothing there, not even a hiding place.

Shane grumbled as he stood watching Michonne as she worked.

'Honestly, Rick has no business letting her have such access, this is our case and we don't need the FBI messing it up for us and claiming they're the ones who solved it.' He thought angrily. 'As if that wasn't bad enough, I now have to deal with Lori lying to me, to herself and-'

"Shane."

He turned sharply, seeing the chief approaching with a grim expression.

"Sir, I-"

"Done bitching in your head?" The chief asked bluntly. "You're not exactly good at hiding that sort of thing you know."

Shane was startled but quickly tried to explain. "Sir, we can handle this ourselves, we don't need-"

"Shane, enough. We had nothing before Agent Hawthorne arrived, she's the reason this case has progressed as far as it had." The chief interrupted him.

"So we just let her take all the credit when-"

"Are you seriously still going on with that nonsense?" The chief snapped. "A girl is dead and two others and a boy have been kidnapped and had god knows what done with them. We have a duty to see they get justice and prevent further victims from suffering the same fate. This isn't the time for a stupid departmental rivalry."

Shane huffed at that, but said nothing.

The chief wasn't finished however as he shook his head.

"You should be more like Rick."

Shane tensed at that, angered. 'I am better than Rick in every way, Lori knows it too and she dares try to deny it.'

Shaking his head, the chief then handed a form to Shane, which confused him.

"Sir?"

"Since you're bitching non-stop about this case, here's a new one for you." He explained. "Glenn and Maggie Rhee returned home to find an intruder in their home, they got away, but they were clearly searching for something. You're to go and investigate."

"But sir, I-"

"I thought you'd be pleased, you're doing this yourself with no FBI involved, you'll get full credit for this one." The Chief remarked before walking off.

Shane was left fuming, still he headed off to see to this case, despite his chagrin.
