Episode 2

(Inside a boarded-up house, the Princess, Medok and the Doctor are posed inside by an open window, ready to make their escape into the night when–)

PRINCESS: Look!

(They look towards the large open doorway leading out of the Colony, where there's nothing but darkness.)

DOCTOR: What? I don't see anything.

MEDOK: No, wait. Out there, those two lights.

DOCTOR: Oh, yes…

PRINCESS: Those aren't lights…

(The two lights are getting closer and closer, as a shape begins to form beneath them. One of a crab like creature, that walks on several thin legs, with huge snapping pincers like claws. The lights are in fact–)

PRINCESS: They're eyes.

(They see the gigantic Macra, as it crawls into the empty Colony street. And it sees them, as it looms over the boarded-up building they're cowering in. It's giant claw reaching out towards them.)

DOCTOR: (Hissing) Get down!

(The Doctor pulls himself and Medok down beneath the window, and the Princess does the same, the three hiding from sight. The claw of the Macra reaches up to the window, but can't enter, because it's too big. It looms there for a moment, twisting and turning, as if trying to find a way to fit. But then, thankfully, the Macra retreats. The Princess, Medok and Doctor cautiously look up over the window ledge, to see the Macra scuttling away into the darkness. Seeing they're safe, Medok stands up, as do the Doctor and Princess.)

MEDOK: That proves it. I wasn't seeing things!

DOCTOR: (Hissing) Medok. The guards, they'll hear you.

MEDOK: It doesn't matter! They can't lock me up again. Now I can prove it. We know they're real!

PRINCESS: (Hissing) Yes, but the guards don't, and we can't–

OLA: (From outside) Medok. I know you're in there. Come out quietly.

(Medok strides towards the back door.)

PRINCESS: Medok, wait–!

(But he's already opened the door. Medok exits out the back door into a street where Ola and three of his men are waiting, each carrying a gun.)

MEDOK: You can put that gun away. I'm coming.

OLA: Who's with you?

MEDOK: The Doctor and the Princess.

(The Doctor and Princess exit the boarded-up building as well.)

OLA: What are you two doing here?

PRINCESS: (Distant) We were trying to get Medok to give himself up.

OLA: Pardon?

PRINCESS: (Pauses) Sorry…did I say something?

MEDOK: Don't waste time! Come on over here.

(Medok goes to move–)

OLA: Stay where you are.

MEDOK: Listen, I came out to show you–

OLA: Stand still!

MEDOK: It's the Macra, Ola! They are real!

OLA: Silence!

MEDOK: Ask them, they'll tell you!

(The Princess goes to speak, but the Doctor nudges her, catching her attention, before shaking his head.)

OLA: We don't want to know what the strangers think.

DOCTOR: Where did you see them, Medok?

MEDOK: What are you talking about, you saw them too, around the front of the building.

DOCTOR: Well, let's just–

OLA: Where do you think you're going?

DOCTOR: I just thought we could go and have a look–

OLA: Stay where you are! Guards, search them.

(The three guards quickly get behind the Doctor, Princess and Medok and begin patting them down.)

DOCTOR: What will they do to us?

OLA: I'll tell you. You're going before the Pilot. You were in the company of an escaped criminal, and you were out in the Colony at night.

PRINCESS: Are we not allowed out at night?

OLA: You know you're not. You were explicitly told.

PRINCESS: Oh, well, I've been told I'm quite forgetful.

MEDOK: (To Doctor & Princess) I'm sorry. I thought he'd listen to reason.

DOCTOR: Reason's the last thing a man like Ola will listen to.

MEDOK: You're going to be in trouble, and it's my fault.

PRINCESS: It's not your fault, Medok. We wanted to help–

OLA: Silence! Pilot's headquarters. Move!

(The guards shove their prisoners forward, before they begin to head back through the Colony streets.)

(A short while later, the Doctor and Princess are escorted into the Pilot's office by Ola. In the office, the Pilot is stood behind his desk, while at a smaller side desk sits his secretary.)

DOCTOR: Good evening, Pilot.

PRINCESS: Hello.

PILOT: Now what's this all about?

DOCTOR: Well, we–

OLA: We found both of them in the new buildings, Pilot, with Medok.

PILOT: At night? How did they get there? Wasn't there a guard on their sleeping quarters?

OLA: All my guards were out looking for Medok, Pilot.

PILOT: I see. Very well, you may leave us, Ola. I will conduct the investigation myself.

(Ola exits. And the second he's gone the Doctor moves over to the secretary's desk, taking an interest in keyboard like device on it.)

DOCTOR: Oh, forgive me. This is interesting. A telescopic viewing machine. I imagine you can keep track on the entire Colony from here, and direct intercommunication between all parts. Very up to date, I imagine. Excellent, excellent. And what's your–

PILOT: You don't seem to realise how serious this business is, Doctor. You have committed a crime.

DOCTOR: A crime?

PILOT: What were you doing with Medok? You know he's a dangerous man.

PRINCESS: Is he though?

PILOT: You have been told so.

PRINCESS: But people can tell lies.

PILOT: I beg your pardon?

DOCTOR: Or perhaps one doesn't know the whole truth.

PILOT: We know that Medok has refused to cooperate and to obey orders. He suffers from hallucinations.

DOCTOR: Ah, that's the point. Does he?

PILOT: What exactly do you mean by that?

DOCTOR: Let me perhaps explain.

(The device on the secretary's desk buzzes. The Pilot answers it.)

PILOT: What is it now? I've already said I don't want to be interrupted.

OLA: (From speaker) Ola reporting, Pilot.

PILOT: Well, what is it?

OLA: Medok has made a statement. It completely changes the situation.

PILOT: Oh, very well. Bring him in.

(Medok enters with Ola right behind him.)

MEDOK: Doctor, Princess. How have they been treating you?

OLA: Silence.

DOCTOR: Perfectly all right, thank you.

PRINCESS: How are you?

MEDOK: Only little worse than before.

OLA: That's enough. Medok's made a further statement, Pilot. It's about the Doctor and Princess.

PILOT: Yes, Medok?

MEDOK: The Doctor and Princess weren't trying to help me. They were trying to make me give myself up.

PILOT: (To Doctor & Princess) Well, that was extremely brave. Why didn't you tell us this?

MEDOK: They did. The Princess said as much to Captain Ola, but he didn't listen to her.

PRINCESS: I did?

DOCTOR: Yes, you did. (Quietly) Another premonition I should think.

PRINCESS: (To self) I really must get a grip on those.

PILOT: I see. Well, it seems we owe you both an apology.

(The Princess goes to speak–)

MEDOK: It's better we tell the truth, Princess.

(The Princess is about to say something else, but the Doctor gives her a pointed look.)

DOCTOR: Yes. Thank you, Medok. We quite understand.

PILOT: Take him away.

OLA: (Angrily) Come on, Medok.

(Ola drags Medok away and out the door.)

PRINCESS: Hold on, where are you taking him?

PILOT: Back to the hospital for correction. And I must say I'm extremely sorry about all this.

PRINCESS: Never mind that, what about Medok? He's proved himself of sound mind by explaining what happened. Surely we can talk about–

PILOT: No, I'm afraid it's still out of the question at this stage. We've seen this before, you see. What Medok needs is another course of treatment at the correction facility. Then when he returns to the Colony, Medok will be a changed man. He will cooperate and he will obey orders. He'll be just like the rest of us.

DOCTOR: Why do you want everyone to be the same?

PILOT: Doctor, this Colony was founded many centuries ago by our ancestors who came from the Earth planet, like your young friends. Our ancestors believed in the virtues of healthy happiness, and we have tried to keep their ideals alive. Sometimes, alas, it is necessary to use force. Now, it's been a long night for you both, why don't you return to your quarters. (To Secretary) Get an escort for them.

DOCTOR: Oh, that's quite all right, we know the way. Come along, Princess.

PRINCESS: See you in a bit, Pilot.

(The Doctor and Princess hurry out the door before the Pilot can say anything more.)

(Arriving back at the refreshing department, the Doctor and Princess walk along the corridor to their room. But rather than return to their room, they enter the room opposite, where their companions are sleeping. The Princess goes to enter, when the Doctor stops her, sniffing at the air.)

DOCTOR: (Quietly) Do you smell that?

(The Princess sniffs the air.)

PRINCESS: Yes. It's very nice.

DOCTOR: Does it make you sleepy?

PRINCESS: A little bit I… Oh.

(The Doctor carefully opens the door, as both he and the Princess peer inside.)

DOCTOR: (Pointing) And look there, speakers just above the bed.

PRINCESS: Ah. You think it's some form of hypnosis.

DOCTOR: Exactly. And I have just the thing for it.

(The Doctor takes out a screwdriver. He proceeds in, heading towards the closest bed, Polly's. The Princess follows him over, at which point the Doctor jams the screwdriver into the speaker above the bed. With a sharp twist, the speaker pops out, letting out a little sizzle as it does. The sound makes Polly stir, but she doesn't fully wake.)

PRINCESS: Polly? Polly, wake up.

POLLY: (Drowsy) Princess? What on earth are you doing?

DOCTOR: We've been scotching a rumour. Or should I say, scorching.

POLLY: What happened?

PRINCESS: Well, it's possible someone's been trying to get inside your head.

POLLY: Inside my… What are you talking about?

PRINCESS: Don't worry, we'll have you fixed in just a sec. Just look into my eyes, Polly.

POLLY: Your eyes?

PRINCESS: Yes, that's it. Focus on them for me. Good girl, you're doing really well. You probably still feel a little sleepy, so if you fall back asleep, it's all right. Your eyelids will naturally be heavy at this time of night. Try and keep them open for now, and keep looking into my eyes. That's it. Why not lie back down. There you go. Get yourself comfy. Can you take a deep breath for me? Good. Keep breathing like that. In. And out. Still looking into my eyes, feeling safe and secure in my gaze. Eyelids getting heavier. Struggling to keep them open now. Your safe with me here, Polly. When you go to sleep, I'll still be right here with you, guiding you. Sleep for me, Polly. Sleep now.

(And Polly's eyes close, as she drifts back to sleep.)

PRINCESS: Can you hear me, Polly?

(Polly, with her eyes closed, nods her head.)

PRINCESS: Well done. Now, I want you to think back to before the Doctor and I entered. A voice was speaking to you. What did it say, Polly?

POLLY: (Drowsily) It said to accept the Colony without question. That I must obey orders. The leaders of the Colony know what is best. I want to help the Colony. I want to serve the Colony. I will obey. I'm happy to obey.

PRINCESS: Thank you, Polly. Now, listen to me. I want you to forget all that. Forget everything you were told while you were asleep. From this moment on, I want you to make your own decisions. Never obey someone else without good reason, that you yourself know to be true. In a moment I will snap my fingers. When I do, all that was said to you will be forgotten. You will wipe it completely from you mind. All that will remain is my final suggestion, that you are in charge of what you do, and no one else. Do you understand?

POLLY: I understand, Princess.

PRINCESS: I'm going to snap my fingers now, Polly. And then you will wake up.

(The Princess snaps her fingers, and Polly wakes.)

POLLY: Oh, Princess. What on Earth did you do that for?

PRINCESS: Just making sure no one's messing with that head of yours. Well, any more than they already have.

POLLY: What do you mean?

PRINCESS: That haircut. I still don't like it.

POLLY: Yes, I do remember, Princess.

DOCTOR: Come on, let's check on Ben and Jamie.

(Hearing the chatter, Ben has woken up.)

BEN: (Drowsy) Hello, Doctor. Is it morning?

(The Doctor makes his way around to the speaker above Ben's bed.)

DOCTOR: No, not yet, but nearly so.

BEN: What are you up to?

DOCTOR: Just fixing something.

(The Doctor begins poking at the speaker with his screwdriver.)

BEN: Lay off, Doctor. The way you mess about you could do some damage.

DOCTOR: Better some damage than loss of will power.

(Ben grabs the Doctor's hand, preventing him from breaking the speaker.)

BEN: What are you on about? Look, get out of it. It's against the law!

DOCTOR: What law?

BEN: The law of the Colony.

PRINCESS: Uh, oh.

(The Doctor waits a moment, then hits the speaker with the butt of the screwdriver.)

BEN: Don't do that!

(But Ben is unable to stop him from breaking the speaker, the same way he did with Polly's.)

BEN: Now you'll get chucked in jail!

POLLY: What's the matter with you, Ben? Since when did you start to worry?

PRINCESS: Polly, stay back.

BEN: He thinks he knows best all the time, but this time he's wrong.

POLLY: Why, Princess, what's wrong?

(Now Jamie wakes up.)

JAMIE: Hey, what's all the noise?

DOCTOR: Jamie, how did you sleep?

JAMIE: Oh, very badly, Doctor. I told Ben I kept hearing wee voices.

DOCTOR: That's a good sign. That means they haven't been able to get very deeply into your brain.

JAMIE: Eh? I don't understand.

DOCTOR: Princess.

PRINCESS: Jamie.

JAMIE: Ay?

PRINCESS: Do you remember what the voices said?

JAMIE: Ay, it was something like–

PRINCESS: Don't say it, just picture it in your mind.

JAMIE: In my mind?

PRINCESS: Yes. Like it's written in a book, in your head.

JAMIE: ...All right.

PRINCESS: Picture yourself putting that book in your hair.

JAMIE: In my hair?!

PRINCESS: Just do it, please.

JAMIE: Oh, all right. But I don't see what– Ow!

(The Princess has pulled one of Jamie's hairs out.)

JAMIE: What you do that for?!

PRINCESS: All done.

DOCTOR: Good. Now, let's take care of this.

(The Doctor uses the screwdriver to break the speaker over Jamie's bed.)

BEN: You're fools, all of you! And just look what you've done. You've smashed up all this equipment.

POLLY: Yes, but look here. If they were trying to make us believe a whole load of rubbish–

BEN: Rubbish? It's not rubbish! Control knows what's best for us. They want us to cooperate. We should be helping.

POLLY: What's the matter with you, Ben? This doesn't sound like you at all.

PRINCESS: It's all right, Polly. Ben's just a little confused. Like you were a moment ago. Come here, Ben. Let's just sit for a minute–

(Ben shoves the Princess back into Polly.)

BEN: You and the Doctor are causing trouble! I'm turning you both in.

(Ben goes to leave but Jamie grabs him from behind.)

JAMIE: You don't know what you're doing, Ben.

BEN: Get off me!

(Jamie and Ben begin to wrestle about by the door.)

POLLY: What's the matter with him?

PRINCESS: It's the voice, it's got inside his head.

DOCTOR: I'm very much afraid we're too late.

POLLY: Ben!

BEN: Let go of me!

(Ben manages to free himself from Jamie, shoving him back as he opens the door.)

POLLY: Ben!

BEN: Guards! Guards!

(Ben flees out into the corridor, Jamie is about to follow, but the Doctor stops him.)

DOCTOR: No, it's no use, Jamie.

JAMIE: But we cannot let him go, Doctor!

DOCTOR: You'll have to. Violence will get you nowhere.

POLLY: But he's going to go and tell the guards. We've got to get you and the Princess out of here.

DOCTOR: We can't leave Ben.

JAMIE: But he's betrayed you!

PRINCESS: Oh, Jamie, it's not Ben. He's been manipulated, they tried to do the same to you and Polly.

DOCTOR: He's not in control of his actions. He's been given a series of instructions and he can't help himself.

POLLY: Yes, but he–

(Ben returns with Ola and some guards.)

BEN: (Pointing to Doctor & Princess) That's them! He broke the equipment and she tried to mess with my head.

OLA: This time we've got the evidence, and from one of your own friends. Come on, Doctor, Princess.

(Jamie gets in front of the Doctor, Princess and Polly, ready for a fight.)

JAMIE: Leave 'em alone.

OLA: Get out of my way. That's an order.

JAMIE: I take orders from no one but the Doctor and the Princess.

OLA: All right, you're coming too.

(Jamie prepares to lunge, when the Doctor puts his hand on his back.

DOCTOR: Thank you, Jamie, but we'd better go with Captain Ola, peacefully.

POLLY: But Doctor, what will they do to you?

PRINCESS: Oh, don't worry, Polly, we'll be all right. You just wait here for us, okay.

BEN: (To Ola) They should be in that hospital of yours.

JAMIE: You traitor, you–

(Jamie tries to lunge at Ben, but the Doctor prevents him.)

OLA: That's enough!

DOCTOR: Come on, Jamie, time we were off.

(The Doctor takes Jamie out the door.)

PRINCESS: (To Polly) You'll be safe from any mind control in here, thanks to the Doctor.

POLLY: But, Princess–

OLA: Enough of your conspiracies, move!

(Ola grabs the Princess and pushes her out the door.)

PRINCESS: See you soon, Polly.

(Ola follows the Princess out into the corridor, where the Doctor, Jamie and some guards are waiting.)

BEN: The hospital! They need correction more than Medok does.

DOCTOR: Yes, thank you, Ben.

JAMIE: We ought to gut him like–

DOCTOR: That's enough of that, Jamie.

PRINCESS: Before we go, can I get my hat from my room, Ola?

OLA: No, now move.

PRINCESS: But it won't take a second!

(Ola and the guards shove the time travellers on, before they proceed down the corridor.)

PRINCESS: Just once, it'd be nice if I could go a day without losing my hat…

(Later, the Doctor, Princess and Jamie are stood in the Pilot's office, with the Pilot himself stood before them.)

PILOT: You have destroyed three nerve circuits, Doctor. You have burned them out. What have you to say?

DOCTOR: Rather neat, don't you think? And so simple. (Holds up his screwdriver) I did it with this.

PRINCESS: A sonic screwdriver.

DOCTOR: A what?

PILOT: So you admit it?

DOCTOR: Yes. (To Princess) It's just a screwdriver, I don't see what makes it sonic?

PILOT: Doctor–

PRINCESS: Of course it's sonic, watch.

(The Princess takes the screwdriver from the Doctor and proceeds behind the Pilot's desk.)

PILOT: What are you doing?

(The Princess crouches down beside the wall, where a speaker identical to the ones in the bedrooms is located. And just like the Doctor did before, the Princess begins to whack the speaker with the screwdriver.)

PILOT: What are you doing?! Stop!

(But before he can do anything the Princess breaks the speaker, with the same sizzling noise as before.)

PILOT: What have you done?!

PRINCESS: See, sonic… Although I somehow think that's not what I meant.

(The Pilot snatches the screwdriver off the Princess.)

PILOT: You will both be punished for this.

(Ola comes running into the room.)

OLA: Pilot!

PILOT: What is it?

OLA: It's the young man who reported the Doctor and Princess, Pilot.

PILOT: What about him?

(Polly and Ben – now wearing a Colony uniform – enter the office.)

OLA: He has another report, Pilot. An urgent one.

PILOT: Very well, Ola, you may leave, I will deal with it.

JAMIE: (To Ben) Who are you stabbing in the back this time?

(The Doctor and Princess see that Polly is upset, near hysteric as she trembles.)

PRINCESS: Polly?

(The Princess crosses over to Polly, holding her.)

DOCTOR: Polly? What's the matter?

POLLY: Doctor, it was horrible. A great insect, like–like a crab. Like what we saw on the scanner before.

DOCTOR: You saw them?

POLLY: Yes, and one got a hold of me. Ben got me free.

JAMIE: Ben did?

POLLY: And he was nearly killed himself.

PRINCESS: Well done, Ben!

PILOT: Silence. (To Ben) Did you protect the girl from such creatures?

BEN: She ran away. I went after her.

PILOT: Did you protect her, and were there such creatures?

(Ben is hesitant.)

PRINCESS: It's all right, Ben. Just tell the truth. You can do it.

(Ben twitches a little.)

PILOT: Well?

BEN: No. There were no such creatures.

POLLY: Ben!

PRINCESS: Oh, Ben…

BEN: There are no such things as Macra.

POLLY: But you saw them!

BEN: There were no such creatures! There are no such things as Macra!

POLLY: But, Ben–!

DOCTOR: Don't blame him, Polly.

JAMIE: But you heard him!

DOCTOR: I told you. Ben has come under the control of the evil forces at the heart of this Colony.

POLLY: Can you help him?

PRINCESS: Of course we can, Polly, and we will. But Ben needs to know that he can fight this on his own. He just has to focus. Come on.

DOCTOR: Fight it, Ben. Think for yourself, like you always have. Don't just blindly obey Control.

PILOT: What you are saying is quite untrue. Control always acts for the best.

DOCTOR: Who is Control?!

PILOT: Wha… You've seen our Controller.

DOCTOR: Have I? I don't remember. Do you, Princess?

PRINCESS: No, I don't now you come to mention it.

PILOT: Well, switch on then. We've nothing to hide.

(The Doctor uses the deceive on the secretary's desk to turn on the large screen. As before, a picture of the Controller appears.)

CONTROL: Controller speaking. We know everything that's happened. The poor girl has had hallucinations.

JAMIE: That's not the Controller. That's just a picture of a man.

PILOT: It is the picture of our Controller.

JAMIE: Well, where is he? I'll wager he doesn't exist.

PILOT: Of course he does.

JAMIE: Well, let's see him then!

PILOT: That's not necessary.

PRINCESS: Of course it's necessary! If I showed you a picture of pink elephant, would you believe it was real?

PILOT: This is quite different. After all, you've heard his voice.

POLLY: Yes, but that could be someone else's voice.

PRINCESS: Exactly.

PILOT: This is preposterous.

DOCTOR: Why don't you show him to us then?

PILOT: Well, all right, if you wish, I'll ask. (To screen) As you can hear, Control, they–they ask to see you in person.

(The screen goes blank.)

DOCTOR: (Chuckling) That set the cat among the pigeons.

JAMIE: They've not got him there.

(The screen turns back on, showing a frail old man who looks around confused, without saying a word.)

CONTROL: This is your Controller. This is your Controller.

JAMIE: But he's an old man.

PILOT: Well, now you've seen the Controller.

JAMIE: Well, let him speak.

CONTROL: Be silent!

(The frail old man flinches in fright.)

CONTROL: That is an order!

POLLY: Let him speak!

PILOT: Be silent!

JAMIE: Ah, he's not giving the orders. He can't talk.

PRINCESS: Jamie's right. Pilot, you must be able to see, someone else is giving the orders. Just look and listen to what's right in front of you.

CONTROL: This is the man. You will hear him speak. Speak, Controller. Speak!

FRAIL OLD MAN: (Hesitant) Am I to speak?

CONTROL: Tell the strangers to believe and obey!

FRAIL OLD MAN: I–I…will tell them. I will tell them. I'll–I'll do what you say.

(But on the wall behind the frail old man, silhouettes begin to show. Silhouettes of huge claws, which are getting bigger, and larger, as the frail old man cowers in fear.)

POLLY: What's happening?

FRAIL OLD MAN: Keep away.

(The camera on the frail old man is knocked over. A brief glimpse of a large crab like claw is shown before it vanishes.)

FRAIL OLD MAN: Don't touch me. I'll obey! Please!

JAMIE: What's that?! What's happening?!

POLLY: That was it! That thing in the picture, that was the claw! They're in control!

PILOT: Take them out of here, they're condemned to the pits!

(Guards rush into the room, surrounding the Doctor, Princess, Polly and Jamie.)

POLLY: Macra!

PILOT: Take them away!

(The guards grab them and begin dragging them out of the office.)

DOCTOR: Leave us alone!

PRINCESS: You can't ignore this! Pilot! Ben! Fight it!

DOCTOR: Think for yourselves! What you saw is real!

POLLY: They're in control!

(But despite their outcries, they're all dragged from the room. And no one sees the glimpse of the Macra on screen, before it cuts out…)
