Chapter 6

At the same time, Mikasa and Aya are on the other side of the city, they find a massive crowd wanting to go through the gate, but a carriage with a lot of supplies are stopping them.

"H-hey, you guys! Do you understand the situation we're in?"

"We're only doing this because we understand! If you want to live, help push!"

"Quit screwing around" "That won't fit no matter how you push it!" "You should let the people through first!" "The Titans will devour us all at this rate!"

"What the hell are you doing, soldier?" A Garrison member is pushed to the front. "Arrest those men!"

"Just try it flunky." The merchant glares at the Garrison, "I'm the boss of the company here. Why do you think provides the meals you soldiers shit out? Can you pay to feed all the soldiers in this town? Everyone push! The goods here are worth more than what you could ever make in your petty lives! If you cooperate, you'll be rewarded!"

Just then, Aya and Mikasa notice a Titan coming toward them and the Garrison soldiers can't reach them. Aya says, "Let's go!"

Mikasa nods as they quickly slash through the Titan's neck with ease. Once the Titan is gone, Aya yells at the crowd, "What are you doing? Hurry up and leave!"

The merchant says, "Hey you, make these people help me out! I'll reward you handsomely!"

This causes them to be angry, Mikasa says, "My comrades are dying right now. Because the evacuation is lagging, they're fighting the Titans and dying."

"Course they are! It's your duty to offer your lives to protect citizens and their property, is it not?" The merchant continues to ask. "Don't get full of yourselves just because you freeloaders are finally doing your job after a hundred years!"

"You know what." Aya walks toward the merchant and says, "If you think it's natural for people to die for others, I'm sure you'll understand that at times, the sacrifice of a single precious life can save many others."

"Just try me! I've known your employer for many years. You don't know how easy it'd be for me to order you underlings around!"

As two men rush at the two girls, they just use their blades to knock them out with ease. Mikasa asks, "How can a corpse be speaking?"

The merchant is scared as two blades are holding against him, he is forced to move the carriage and let the others go in first. Everyone is showing gratitude to the two of them, as they do the pose to dedicate their hearts.

"Good work taking them down, Ackerman, Neumann." "We're impressed." The other Garrisons say to them.

"However, I dulled my blades with a single blow in my impatience." Mikasa says. "I'll be more mindful next time."

"Good thing my blades are still sharp." Aya sighs.

"Just what kind of life have you been living until now..." One Garrison member asks, but then he decides to against it.

(Flashback)

A seven-year-old Aya Neumann is sitting beside her mother, who is lying on the bed. Aya says, "Mom. You will be better soon..."

Aya's mother, named Sarah Neumann, slowly mutters, "It's no use...my body is killing me, I don't think I can live any longer..."

"Don't say such a thing, Mother!" Aya says. "It will be fine, I'll bring Dr. Yeager here and he will help you."

"Aya...you don't need to waste more time with someone like me..." Sarah mutters.

"But Mother..." Aya cries, and Sarah notices the locket that Aya is wearing, "Your father's locket... once I died, you should try to find your father."

"My father? But I have never met him before. How would I find him?"

"Your father is in the Survey Corps, his name is L-" Just then, Sarah can't speak anymore, and Aya tries to shake her up but failed.

"Mother...I promised I'll find my father." Even though she never gets to know what her father's name is, she knows that if she wants to find her, she has to go to the Survey Corps. But deep down inside, she is scared, she knows that those who are in the Survey Corps usually don't live long because of the Titans outside of the wall.

She still needs to survive, and that's why she starts to steal food from the markets and is usually beaten up for it, however, she never gave up and she sometimes fights back. It is until one day, she is about to pass out, but two kids try to help her by fighting back the ones who try to beat her. The two of them are Eren Yeager and Katrina Yeager.

"Why...why did you save me?" Aya asks with a frown.

"You are Aya, right? Mom and Dad want us to find you." Eren says. "We tried to go to your house, only to find that everything is empty."

"That's why we have been looking for you, so you can stay with us." Katrina smiles.

"Stay with you? Why go this far for a nobody like me?" Aya asks with confusion.

"You're not a nobody!" Eren says, causing her to get surprised. "You just want to survive, and that is amazing."

"Amazing..." Aya stares at the boy as a new light has shed on her, her cheeks start to get red as Eren and Katrina grab her and take her to their house.

(Another Flashback)

A few months later, Eren and Aya have been inseparable as they usually hang out together, it turns out that Eren and Katrina have other friends, Arim, Peter, and Odom. Peter likes to swim in the nearby river. And he also teaches them how to catch fish so they can eat. As for Odom, he is interested in doing craftwork, as he would make some toys to play with. As for Armin, he likes to show his knowledge to everyone, and Aya feels amused at the information that he found out.

Katrina likes to see how her father makes medicines, but that is only when Dr. Yeager isn't in the basement. Eren just likes to hang out with her since he claims to be her knight. Aya is now staying with the Yeager family, and both Grisha and Carla treat her as their daughter.

One day, both Eren and Aya are with Grisha as they arrive at a wooden house. "So her name is Mikasa?" Aya asks.

"That's right, she's a girl your age. There aren't any other children around here, so get along with her." Grisha says.

"That depends on her attitude." Eren says.

"Eren, this is why you only have a few friends. Peter, Odom, and Armin." Grisha sighs. "Maybe they're not home. Mr. Ackerman, it's Dr. Yaeger!"

But just as they notice the door isn't locked, they gasp to see a lot of blood around the house, and two corpses are on the ground. Eren and Aya also widen their eyes at what just happened.

"Eren, Aya, is there a girl nearby?" Grisha asks. "Did you see Mikasa?"

The two of them are also trying to find her, but she is not there.

"I see. I'm going to call the Military Police Brigade and request an investigation. You go wait at the base of the mountain. Understand? Eren? Aya?"

But the two of them just stare at the bodies with anger in their eyes, and they decide to take matters into their hands.

In another house, Mikasa is being bounded by the thieves, they kidnap her because they think she's an Asian, and she's remembered how her parents were killed in front of her by these people.

"It's cold..." Mikasa can only mutter.

Just then, the door opens, and Eren and Aya are there. Eren says, "Excuse me..."

"Hey, kids! What are you doing here?" One of the thieves asks.

"Um, uh...we...we were lost in the forest..." Aya says, "And we saw this cabin..."

"You two kids shouldn't be walking around in the forest alone. There are scary wolves roaming there. But you won't have anything to worry about if you come with-"

Before the man can finish, he is stabbed by Eren with the knife. Eren says, "Thanks, Mister. I get it now, so die, you bastard!"

He nods at Aya, who kicks the man to the ground and the other thief decides to chase after them, only to see Aya holding a knife tied to a broom and stabs onto the man.

"You goddamn animals!" Eren yells.

"Yeah! You'd better die!" Aya exclaims as she continues to stab. "This is what you deserve!"

Mikasa can only watch with shock as Aya and Eren are killing the two thieves. Aya turns to Mikasa and says, "It's all right now. Don't worry."

Eren then uses the knife to cut the ropes behind Mikasa, and asks, "You're Mikasa, right? I'm Eren and this is Aya."

"Eren is Dr. Yeager's son, I'm sure you've met him before." Aya says. "We tagged along with him to your house for medical examinations. And-"

"There should have been the third man." Mikasa says, and much to their surprise, the third one comes back and he manages to kick both Eren and Aya to the ground.

"Did you do it?" Then he starts to grab both Eren and Aya, who struggles to break hold of his grip. "I'll kill you two! You're dead meat!"

Eren yells, "F-fight...If you lose, you die!"

Aya says, "If you win, you live..."

"What are you brats thinking?" The third thief yells.

Mikasa is terrified as she grabs the knife. "I can't do it..." Mikasa is shaking in fear, but seeing how Eren and Aya pass out, Mikasa feels energy surging inside her and she starts to charge at the third thief.

"His heart was pierced from the back with one strike." An MP soldier says as he holds up a lantern to the corpse in the corner of the room.

"Did those kids do this?" Another MP soldier asks.

Back outside, Grisha scolds both Eren and Aya. "Eren, Aya, I told you to wait at the base of the mountain. Do you understand what you've done?"

Aya says, "We just killed some dangerous animals."

Eren says, "Aya's right! They were beasts that just happened to look like humans!"

"Eren! Aya!" Grisha yells.

"They would've been long gone if we'd waited for the Military Police Brigade to arrive." Eren continues. "It would've been too late!"

"That's no excuse!" Grisha says. "You were just lucky, Eren, Aya! I'm scolding you for thoughtlessly risking your life like that!"

"But...we just wanted to save her quickly..." Aya says as tears are forming in both people's eyes.

Grisha sighs as he turns to Mikasa, "Do you remember me, Mikasa? We met a few times when you were younger."

"Dr. Yeager, which way..." Mikasa asks. "...should I go to return home? It's cold. There's nowhere...for me to go home to."

Eren stares at Mikasa before taking off his scarf and wraps around Mikasa. "You can have this. It's warm, right?"

Mikasa grabs the scarf and mutters, "It's warm."

"Mikasa, how about you live with us? You've been through a lot, just like Aya. You need plenty of rest." Grisha says.

"Yeah, let's go back already, to our home." Aya says as they all leave, with Mikasa having tears in her eyes.

(Flashback Ends)

Mikasa and Aya then slices the nape of other Titans, landing gracefully on the roof. The rain continues to pour around them. "A cruel world…" Two bodies are steaming around the building they stand on. "...in which only the victors are allowed to live."

The bells ring in the distance, the gate is sliding shut. "Let's go," Ian says. "Time to withdraw, Ackerman, Neumann. Let's scale the Wall."

"I'll go assist the vanguard's retreat." Mikasa says.

"Same here." Aya adds.

"H-Hey, you two!" Ian calls after her, but they already have left.
