Angel the Vampire

Sunnydale, the world without shrimp 1997

Dear Diary,

He used to sneak in her window. I could hear him from across the hall, I could both of them talking. Even if Buffy was grounded. But the first time I met Angel was when Mom wasn't home. Buffy was supposed to be babysitting me but instead she told me to stay in my room while she invited her boyfriend over. I thought I would hate him, most of the boys Buffy had brought home were annoying and always liked her a bit too much. But Angel was different.

He had a nice smile and cool hair. He wore clingy white tees and a leather jacket (of course, I mean what else). I thought he was going to be mean and condescending but he just smiled and said 'hi.' He acted like I was a person rather than just a child. Buffy brushed him away and up the stairs out of my sight pretty quickly but I had already decided he was okay for her. Mentally I gave him my blessing.

When I heard her scream I ran over the hall and banged on the door. "Dawn! Go away!" She screamed at me at slammed the door in her face, but I put my ear to the wood and listened. She was telling him to go, to get out of her room and not come back. Whatever he'd done it must've been pretty bad because she didn't chuck boys out very often. But then he was spluttering over his words, he kept telling her it was okay. That he wasn't going to hurt her. And I believed him so I forced the door open.

"Let him stay Buffy," I said but she just glared at him. She didn't even turn to look at me. He held her arm and said I was right, that he would explain everything. He showed her his bumpy face more slowly, gave her time to adjust to it. I watched carefully, I'd never seen a vampire up close before. I had a feeling they existed but I'd never known for sure before that night.

"Buffy it's okay," he said, "I have a soul." She seemed to understand what this meant because she nodded. I was just as puzzled as I had been before but Buffy started gesturing that I leave the room so I huffed and walked back across the hall. I think they must've been kissing, but I didn't pry. I didn't tell mom what had happened either. Which I easily could've done so who is the real good person huh?

Angel came over a lot more after that. I could hear him and Buffy through the walls sometimes, she used to giggle around him and then they'd go silent for a while. That's how I knew not to knock on her door. Mom didn't like him though, not then, not ever. It's like she could sense he was going to hurt her. Angel caused us a lot of trouble for a while, he made Buffy cry for months. But he never scared me. Buffy never forgot me standing up for him though.
