Parent-Teacher Terror

Sunnydale, the world without shrimp 1997

Dear Diary,

Mom was mad at Buffy about something. I can't remember what. But it was parent-teacher night and Buffy had been staying behind after school all week to prepare for it. I never had to do that so she must really be in trouble. I think the principal hates her. On the actual night mom had to drag me along because there was no one left to babysit me after I scared off Mrs Smith from next door.

We walked in and Buffy gave me a cup of disgusting lemonade, she told me to smile but I just smirked at her. I knew this was going to be good because Buffy was making all sorts of excuses so that mom didn't speak to the principal. Willow took us round most of the classrooms, until mom told me to go and find Buffy but I ran off on my own.

I walked past the library and Xander was in there, so obviously it was going to be more interesting in there than hanging out with Buffy in the quad. "Hey Dawnie," he said to me cheerfully. Then, "hey Dawnie, you're not supposed to be here. Where's Buffy? I'll take you back to Buffy, or your mom." It looked like he was scrabbling around for words. He startled up and off his seat, pushing me out of the library and down the hall, just in time for an enormous smashing sound.

Everything went very dark, very suddenly. Xander put his hands on my shoulders and tried to guide me towards the quad but I was scared. I could hear people screaming and running down the halls. There was a little bit of light coming through the windows in the quad, so we ran towards it. Buffy came running towards us screaming "it's Spike and his army of vamps, run." I'm pretty sure this was aimed at Xander because he grabbed me and ran the other way down the hallway.

"Xander! What's happening?" I yelled as he flung open a utility closet and pushed me inside.

"Stay here Dawn. Don't come out until one of us comes and finds you." He sounded so serious, so I walked backwards in the closet and sat down on the janitor's stool. My chin slumped into my hands. This was boring. And I really wanted to know what was going on out there, it looked serious.

Then the door to closet opened and Willow ran in with Cordelia. I stood up, "what's happening?" I asked again which made Willow jump.

"Oh my god, Dawn don't do that," she said.

"Oh cute, are you Buffy's kid sister?" Cordelia asked me, I didn't know what she looked like at the time but I'd heard Buffy and her friends talk about her.

I folded my arms across my chest, "I'm not a kid." I said, defending my own honour.

"You're eleven." Willow chimed in from the corner, I know she wasn't trying to be mean but she was distracted, peering out of the closet every few minutes to check the hallway.

There was loud set of footsteps walking towards the closet. Willow slammed the door and told us to shush. We were all very scared but then someone yelled 'Spike' and the footsteps retreated away from us. Willow took a deep breath and whispered that everything was going to be okay.

And it was. Everything was alright in the end. Mom took us home and told Buffy she was proud of her. I got a cookie and some warm milk before I went to bed, that bit was nice. Took away the taste of Buffy's disgusting lemonade.
