Mice Crave Cheese

Sunnydale, the world without shrimp 1997

Dear Diary,

Halloween 1997. I learned a lot of things that night. But the thing that stays with me most is the craving. The constant yearning... For cheese. It was a dark and stormy night, okay so it wasn't exactly stormy, but it was dark. It was Halloween and Buffy, Willow and Xander got roped into helping with trick or treating. They had to take little kids around the neighbourhood and make sure they didn't get lost. Mom made me walk around with Buffy because she didn't want me getting lost too. Which I thought was totally unfair because I wanted to walk around with Janice.

I was dressed as a mouse, I had grey ears attached to a headband and a tail that hung down out of my pants. I looked very cute. Buffy took to a few houses before all the trouble started. There was chaos, and suddenly Buffy didn't know who I was anymore and the kid standing next to me was trying to eat me. Then there was just nothing because I turned into a giant mouse. Human-sized mouse. I remember it all. Every sucky moment of being a mouse. Buffy was dressed as a princess so she was walking around totally cluelessly in the road, where the cars were. Which was a seriously bad idea, so I tried to drag her back onto the sidewalk. By that point all the other kids had run off so we were alone in the chaos. Then Willow appeared, literally appeared, apparently she knew what was going on too but she was a ghost.

"Dawnie, you're a mouse. Right, um, do you know who I am?" Willow asked me and I nodded, she'd already worked out that Buffy had no idea what was going on. She told me to go home and find mom, then I was being dragged along the street by an aggressive Xander who was dressed as a soldier. He had no idea who or what I was so he just shoved me into the road. Willow eventually came to collect me and Buffy and take us home.

Back at the house everyone was arguing so I went to the kitchen to find some cheese. Or crackers, or anything. I was suddenly so hungry, overcome with the craving for cheese. I sat on the counter, the fridge wide open, the cheese ripped into and devoured. It was disgraceful. I heard Willow, Buffy, Xander and now Cordelia leaving through the front door. They just left me. So I decided to follow them, but when I got out into the street I couldn't see them anymore. I ran into the road, confused and feeling very weird. It wasn't long after that the spell wore off and I was left standing in the middle of the road, dressed as a mouse, scared because I didn't know where anyone was. I didn't see the truck heading right for me.

I was okay. The truck stopped in front of me and a guy got out of the driver's seat and made me go back inside the house. He was nice. He said his name was Oz and that he was looking for some redhead that sounded not like Willow so I told him I didn't know who he was talking about. Then Buffy came home, she remembered who she was which was good. So everything was fine in the end but I'll never forget the hankering I had for cheese that day. Never!
