Midway through shift, Sara looked up from her location in the layout room to find Grissom watching her. He gave her a small smile before moving on down the hall, a smile which she returned. No words were exchanged but it didn't matter, observing each other working was a past time they enjoyed. They both carried a passion for forensics so seeing each other working, it was something they could do all day. Sara chuckled internally because she remembered him talking to her about it not even a week before, as she worked in the garage under a car.
Sara groaned as she slid herself out from underneath the green sedan, realizing she'd need a drill to get into the line where their evidence was. As she sat up, prepared to stand and find the drill among the tools and equipment, a hand was held out to her. Looking up, she found her supervisor, and boyfriend, silently standing beside her. She accepted his hand, no words exchanged during the act, and was pulled up from the crawler.
"I swear, criminals put their contraband in the most irritating of places." Sara stated while heading to the tool cabinet. "They welded a metal box to the underside of the catalytic converter."
Grissom watched her as she spoke, irritation on her face as she went about finding a drill. There was a smug of dirt on her cheek and the blue FORENSIC coveralls she wore were covered in dirt and dust as well. Her hair was up in a ponytail, reminding him of the Forensic Academy Conference where they met seven years before. "I could watch you work all day."
It was spoken softly as Sara returned with a drill and several drill bits. The statement made her look up at the man standing not even a foot away from her. "I doubt that. I look…"
"Beautiful." Grissom reached out and gently rubbed the smug of dirt off her cheek. Her eyes glanced at the door but no one was there. "You're driven to find the truth and speak for the victims who aren't able to do so for themselves. That brings out your passion Sara, and it's a passion I could watch all day."
Unable to keep a straight face, Sara grinned as she looked down before resigning her face to a small smile. The edges of her lips curled as she looked into blue eyes. "If I'm being truthful, so could I. I could watch you preserve and study insect activity for hours. I have before." She looked away before glancing back. "Various experiments over the years, I've sat beside you and didn't grow bored for a second."
Knowing she had to work, he motioned to the car. "I'll let you get back to finding what they tried to hide."
Tightening a drill bit, Sara reached over to the nearby bench and grabbed safety goggles. "Breakfast after shift?"
"I'll cook." He stated before turning to leave.
Greg joined her seconds after Grissom left the doorway and took up the space beside her. "What are we looking for in this mess?" He motioned to the various pieces of blood saturated clothing. "I don't even want to know how many people's blood is on these clothes."
"Divide and conquer?" Sara asked and Greg nodded. "You take the right and I'll take the left. I know we reviewed it for trace earlier but we'll do it again just to be sure there's nothing we missed."
As they worked on the pile of clothes, Greg spoke to her. "So there's a rumor going around the lab. Just thought I'd give you a heads up that people think you're dating Grissom. Which, I mean, not the worst rumor to go around considering some of the ones I heard in the past."
Bent over, reviewing the shirt she had with a magnifier, Sara responded to his statement. "Not a rumor." She pulled back and saw Greg's head pop up immediately. "We are dating. I mean, we still have to talk with Ecklie, but new SOPs just require a form filled out and sent to HR."
Greg looked at her surprised. "You're dating Grissom?"
"I don't see why everybody thinks it's a big deal." Sara shook her head and turned back to the shirt. "Catherine is acting like it's a holy miracle."
"It is a big deal. Everyone knows that Grissom doesn't date or act socially. He's never even gone out with us when invited. He's a loner and could happily spend all day at the body farm without issue." Her colleague and friend held out his hand to her. "The fact you're dating, blows everything we know about Grissom out of the water."
Sara quickly got irritated at the statement Greg made but it wasn't far from the truth. Her boyfriend was a loner, he had been for years despite the well-hid adoration he held for her. The more they spent time together, the more she saw he was an introvert outside of work. He preferred only the company of a few people and his insects. Anyone else could become an irritation to be pushed away.
"Greg, please just keep this between us." She asked after reining in the irritation. "We still have to speak to Ecklie and while rumors often fly around, I don't want to draw attention prematurely."
The man nodded and smiled at her. "I am happy for you. I've noticed you've been much happier the last few weeks, smiling and laughing more." Leaning in, he spoke quietly. "Does he make you happy?"
"Immeasurably." She stated with a smile on her face.
"Good, means we don't have to contemplate hiding a body."
Sara laughed as she pushed Greg's arm, the two of them got back to work. "Is it weird for you?"
"Partially, but having seen Grissom's personality for years, I know he'll treat you right. Especially after that asshole EMT you dated."
"He's definitely leagues above Hank." Sara paused as she noticed a faint darker color under the blood. "I have trace under the blood. Paint or ink, something purple." She pulled away and grabbed the shirt. "I'm going to go to Trace and see if we can identify this. You keep up searching the rest of the clothes."
