Then came the implementation day. One of Adam's ex-pack members had made them a very lightweight wheeled sled made of aluminum tubes and canvas to which Mimi could be safely tied and transported while being pulled by the wolves. The plan was simple. The men would transform into wolves and carry the sled on the outward journey, Charles would tie the sled to Adam's back because Adam had a big blue and black strong wolf and the sled would not slow him down at all. A little less than halfway there would be a bigger den where they would take a breather on the way in and make sure Mimi was all right and asleep. Samuel also booked a small bag, which Charles took with him. The bag contained some very strong anesthetic drugs, needles, and syringes in case Mimi panicked. On arrival, Charles would turn human and he and Mercy would go to get Mimi. Before they went inside, they would dismantle the sled and get it ready to go, so they could get moving as soon as they brought Mimi back.
From the time I was kidnapped and brought here to the facility, I tried to escape. I fought back, I attacked, anybody. I was on the alert the whole time, whenever I heard footsteps approaching, I felt this white-hot rage rise to the surface, and my fists tightened. I was always looking for a weapon, a fork, a drip rack, anything I could use to swing, to hit, to get away. Sometimes I even got out of the room, even to the supposed front door. The guards had tranquilizer guns loaded and the stuff was strong. Other guards had electric weapons but they didn't always hold me back if I got my rage really out. I couldn't stand being tied to the bed, if I was conscious I would rip, or rather shred the cannulas off myself, I didn't care where it was embedded, it was gone. I destroyed the IV bags, I tore them up. I shredded and knotted all the tubes, and tried to break windows, but they soon moved me to a room where there were no windows. I felt cold and hungry all the time, I couldn't always keep conscious, I could pass out on the floor. And then I woke up tied to the bed again. They took tissue samples from me, opened me up several times, and probed my internal organs. I was waiting for someone to really break and for me to die. A familiar-looking doctor came by once or twice to admire me and demand various descriptions and samples. I don't know how long I had been in the institution but fortunately, my fighting spirit didn't subside. I don't know how many I killed or who I maimed, and frankly, I didn't care.
I just overheard occasionally when the nurses or investigators talked about subjects who didn't survive, I even saw a couple of times when a stretcher was being carried down the hallway with a bloody sheet on someone. I refused to accept that that would be my fate. Then one day I overheard two investigators say they had a clear observation on some targets, I don't know what targets they were talking about, but this familiar doctor came back to dig and told the other one. "I can't wait to get our hands on it." Another voice replied. " I heard there's been some movement in the sub tunnels, those hidden motion detectors went off the other day so the bosses want more surveillance there." I didn't have to listen to any more than this as the doctor wanted to take another biopsy of my liver, or actually another lobe. My liver, he said, always grew back which was a great miracle to them.
I think it was one evening or night when all the lights in my room had been turned off and I had been given the muscle relaxant again and the anesthetic kept dripping down relentlessly, if I could just get my arms out a bit, get them to move a bit then maybe I could reach into that drip and get it stopped up so that the medicine wouldn't take effect.
The wolves ran silently through the tunnels and left some of their belongings at the rest stop and continued on their way. They reached their destination at a quarter to midnight as they had planned. there Mercy and Charles transformed into humans and slipped in through the service hatch, having first unloaded the sled and prepared it to wait. In the car Nick and Elias kept a close eye on the facility, it was large. It was a former factory and most of its interior had been emptied and rebuilt for its current purpose. Nick watched the chimney rising from the back of the plant, the black smoke billowing from it, the smell of which carried all the way to the car, and they had no doubt what was burning in the plant's incinerator. They waited patiently.
Charles and Mercy slipped through the hatch silently and quickly. The plant was dim, with only the small lights along the corridor on. Everywhere there was the smell of drugs, pain, blood, and secretions. This was a hospital from hell. They knew the guards were rotating every half hour and they had just gone to the other end of the ward. Mercy walked from door to door looking for the familiar smell that the vampires had brought in the form of Mimi's clothes. Finally, she smelled it. It was diluted, covered with drugs and pain and rage. He gestured to Charles, who followed. The plan was for Mercy to go first and try to keep Mimi calm if possible and then administer the medicine if needed, Charles would undo the shackles or restraints and they would slip, back into the tunnel as quickly as possible.
Mercy went into the room first. In the bed lay a woman, frail and barely awake. Mercy quickly covered the woman's mouth and whispered. "I'm a friend, we're here to rescue you, Nick and Elias are waiting, but for now I need you to be quiet and still ok?" I nodded, not knowing who this dark-haired Native American woman was if this was a dream or what because another Native American entered the room. It was a man. Big strong and he had almost black eyes. The man walked silently like some jungle cat and said, "I'm going to take you off now and you behave yourself, okay?" I nodded again. The man's voice was like melted chocolate. Mercy squeezed the drip bag of anesthetic medicine. She had opened the dropper to the full as she passed and as the woman stared at Charles, Mercy tried to put as much of the medicine into the woman as she could. Soon the woman's eyes began to close and she was clearly struggling to stay awake. Charles said. "It's all right, you can sleep. We'll help. Don't fight it."
Don't fight it. Before I knew it this Indian woman had opened my IV and was shoving anesthetic into my veins as fast as she could. I felt the medicine flood my system and the coldness only increased. my consciousness began to blur ominously and the last thing I realized was that the woman was only disconnecting the IV but not taking the cannula out of my vein. Then I felt strong hands lifting me and my last thought was related to a strange feeling of safety.
Mercy and Charles acted quickly. They sneaked with their prey back through the service hatch and headed for the wolves. Samuel came in wolf form to sniff. "Should I give this one more medicine?" Mercy asked. Samuel whimpered and nodded. Mercy took a syringe and attached it to a cannula and pushed the plunger. Then they covered Mimi up as best they could, tied her down with support bands, and set off. Charles and Mercy led the way and after half an hour they came to a break point. Charles and Mercy transformed into humans and made sure Mimi was still asleep. Even through Samuel's strong medicine, Mimi was furrowing her brows and making noises. Mercy gave another injection, which put Mimi back into a deeper sleep. Charles could hear how frantically Mimi's heart was beating, even though she was drugged. Then Charles heard a thump.
Everything was ready. The guards had waited patiently and now the wolves stopped exactly where they should. The 15 armed guards left silver nets and stun guns at the ready. Soon Dr. Kendrick would have his long-awaited donors. The guards were on the move. The surprise was on their side. They set off the silver nets, trapped the wolves under them, and shot at least four darts into each animal. The substance was ruthless, it worked quickly and the Aconitum in the nets weakened the wolves even further. Soon they had three wolves captive and a Target omega.
Charles had gone to investigate another tunnel that branched off from this one when he smelled the silver and aconitum. Realizing it was too late, he managed to yank Mercy just out of harm's way so no one would notice them. "Shh, there's nothing we can do. We have to save Da and the others later now we'll just get caught. "Charles saw that at least four of the guards still had the net loaded and he couldn't get a step further before the net was on him. Charles and Mercy could do nothing but watch as Adam, Bran, and Samuel were lifted onto the stretcher and given more medicine, and tied to the stretcher with silver chains. Mercy could smell Adam's skin burning from where the silver touched him. The men were quickly bound and medicated and moved to another corridor with an elevator at the end. Charles cursed in his mind, only now noticing the hidden cameras embedded in the walls. They had been on their trail all along. Charles knew that three full-sized werewolves were not easy to control and there were a limited number of places to keep them.
Nick and Elias knew something had gone wrong when suddenly the entire cave mouth was swarming with men and a large truck pulled up to one exit. From their car, the men saw four people tied to a stretcher being loaded into the truck. A couple of dozen guards also entered the truck. The truck doors were then slammed shut and it drove off. After 10 minutes Charles got into the car. He said "Mercy went wherever she's going now. That's all she could do. The end is now in our hands." ' The vampires quickly left the truck and the men drove back to Bran's house where Charles concentrated on his computer. Nick and Elias started calling around. Nick started calling the other packs with what he knew, but none of these packs wanted anything to do with Marrok, so they were of no use. Charles eventually tracked the truck to the docks and it was empty. All the dock workers had been killed and the cargo manifests for that day and all the logs had been erased.
Charles said, " Dead end, now I don't know where to look, I guess I'll just have to wait for someone somewhere to see something." Nick and Elias agreed. The men exchanged phone numbers and promised to keep each other informed of even the smallest clues. Charles knew that Da, Adam, and Samuel would put up a fight as soon as they could.
