"What's wrong?" Kara asked her sister as she entered the office the next day. "And why are you at work on Saturday?"
"In answer to your second question, I'm swamped and right back at you. And in answer to your first we ran the DNA sample you gave us."
"And?"
"We got a familial match."
"So her brother is dead?" Kara asked.
"Likely. We can't tell for sure it is her brother, it could be her father or any close male relative. Full results will take another day or so. But from what you said it was likely her brother. Sorry."
"At least she will get closure." Kara said.
"You think she'll be up to giving a more detailed description of the man she met?"
"I'll ask." Kara said.
"Want me to come with you?"
"No, it's fine. Well not fine. But I can do it."
"Kara." Alex said looking at her sister.
"Yeah."
"His death isn't your fault."
00
"Hi Clare." Kara greeted entering the hospital room.
"Kara, hi." She smiled. But when she saw Kara's expression she guessed. "He's dead, isn't he?"
"We think so. Yes. One of the victims was a male match, but technically they could be any male relative. We'll know for sure in a day or so."
"Well Ted is the only one still alive- well not any more. I mean my dad died three years ago. So it could only be Ted."
"I'm sorry." Kara said.
"At least you found him." Clare said looking at her hands before looking at Kara and saying. "How do we find the people who did this?"
"Well, if you are up to it, some Agents would like to talk to you."
"I'll do anything." Clare said.
00
"Clare is happy to talk to one of your team and help get a description." Kara said when she returned to the DEO.
"Great." Alex said looking up from her computer.
"And were they DEO guards outside her room?" Kara asked.
"Yes. If she knows something she could be in danger." Alex pointed out. "Even if she doesn't know, if they think she knows, she'll be in danger." She said before asking. "How are you doing?"
"Okay. I mean I hate breaking bad news, but it is not like it was me who lost a brother." Kara said. "After I told her I took a clear the head flight and I may have thought of a link."
"What?"
"They released the drugs in batches right? Like they were going through development stages. And Clare was targeted. What if others who were given the drugs had metas in the their families?"
"We can look into it." Alex said.
"Thanks." Kara said. "Oh I forgot to mention you are coming to a concert tonight."
"I am?" Alex asked confused.
"Yes. Lena has tickets."
"I don't have-" Alex started to say only for Kara to say.
"It's the Bedfords."
"Really?" Alex asked looking interested.
"Yes. So be at my place by five."
00
"Are you going to be okay at a concert?" The teenage Alex asked her mother that afternoon.
"Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well it's loud."
"Don't worry about me." Kara said. "Just have fun." She added as her sister came into the apartment. Hearing the final part of the conversation the older Alex asked.
"Why is Alex worrying about you?"
"She always worries." Kara pointed out. "No MJ?"
"No."
"So a girls night." Kara said before looking at her daughter and saying. "And for you an educational field trip."
"I thought it was a concert." Her sister said confused.
"It is." Kara said. "But Alex has never heard of The Bedfords."
"How?" Her sister asked confused, giving her niece the impression she was in for a long night. She then looked at her sister and asked. "How are we getting there?"
"In style. Lena is picking us up at six."
"Then why did you tell me to get here for five?" Alex asked.
"I thought you'd be late."
00
"How good were they?" Kara asked when they got home.
"Great." Her daughter said without much enthusiasm.
"You know you can resist as much as you want, but your mother will convert you." Her aunt said.
"I mean she already has with pizza and chocolate." Lena chipped in.
"I guess." The teen said yawning.
"You also need to work on your stamina." Kara commented.
"What? It's late." The teen pointed out. "I'm going to bed." She added before hugging her mother and saying to the others. "Night."
"Night." Kara smiled.
"Thank you." The adult Alex said looking from Kara to Lena, once her niece had disappeared. "I really needed tonight."
"You are most welcome." Lena smiled she then turned serious and asked. "But why? What's happened to cause you to admit you need a break?"
"I don't know. Everything." Alex sighed. "Work is manic and MJ is well, jumping head first into his super rebellious phase. It just feels like when I do escape from the office I am just confronted with even more issues at home."
"You can always hide out here." Kara offered.
"I'm not sure avoiding MJ is the best way to deal with that problem, but I appreciate the offer."
00
"Alex is seeing Frax today so I need entertaining unless you have big plans with MJ?" Kara said walking into her sister's lounge the next day.
"No. He is out with Jess."
"Have you met her yet?"
"No."
"Well from your tone you clearly need a distraction." Kara said. "And after what you said last night, no way am I letting you go to work."
"What did you have in mind?" Alex asked.
"I thought you might have some ideas." Kara replied.
"Nope."
"What about going hiking? We could go to the Grand Canyon, then we could go to that place Eliza and Jeremiah took us to with the wolves."
"Which place?" Alex asked confused.
"The wolf place. You know, where they surrounded the car. In Arizona."
"You mean Bearizona?" Alex asked.
"Yes."
"You remember the place named after bears for wolves?" Alex asked.
"There were wolves too. So what do you say?"
"That's a few States away."
"But I can fly us there and then we can hire a car. So…..?"
"Sure you have time?"
"You overestimate my social life." Kara pointed out.
"Don't let mom hear you say that or she will be setting you up on dates." Alex warned.
00
"Hey." Kara said when she came home that evening and saw her daughter and dog on the couch.
"Hi." Alex replied turning off the TV.
"How was Frax?"
"Fine, we practiced my powers all afternoon."
"How are they coming on?"
"Good."
"Well perhaps you can show me tomorrow?" Kara said.
"Okay. Where have you been?"
"Arizona."
"Why?"
"To see bears."
"Is that an Earth expression I don't know?" The teenager asked confused.
"No." Kara smiled. "Have you eaten?"
"I was waiting for you."
"Then do you want to go out and get something or are you too tired from using your powers?"
"I'm a little tired."
"Then stay here, I'll be right back." Kara said disappearing. As she flew off Chewie jumped off the couch and went expectantly over to his bowl.
"Fine." The teenager said looking at him before getting up and walking to the kitchen and finding a can of dog food which she put in his bowl.
As he wolfed it down she returned to the couch and sat down before dozing off.
000
"I'm back." Kara said flying through the window waking the sleeping teen as she did so.
"Mom?" The teen said sleepily.
"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you." Kara said putting the bags on the coffee table.
"It's okay." The teen said stretching before asking. "Do I smell vegetables?"
"Yes, I got you a chicken noodle bowl, complete with weird green stuff." Kara said passing it to her.
"Thanks." The teen replied.
"So apart from practicing powers what have you got up to today?"
"Walked Chewie, did my homework."
"That sounds really boring." Kara pointed out as she started on her noodle bowl.
"Well I was a little tired after training with Frax."
"Sure you are okay?" Kara asked.
"I'm fine." The teen said before confessing. "But I did overuse my powers today."
"The important thing is you recognise that."
"So you're not mad?"
"Why would I be mad?"
"You usually freak out when I use my powers too much."
"Only when you don't recognise you have limits." Kara said.
"I recognise them." The teen said yawning.
"Why don't you eat your dinner then we will veg out in front of some movies."
