Baratta jennifer - Things will get better.

"I just don't understand. She tries so hard to help people, but people are still afraid of her and want to hurt her." Alex said as she sat in the lounge with Matt's family.

"You mean those weapons?" Matt's father asked.

"In part."

"Is it possible your mom asked the government to have those weapons?" Andy asked.

"If she did Alex would have a cure." She said as her phone rang.

"It's Steve. Sorry I need to take this." Alex said answering the call and leaving the room.

"How are you holding up?" Steve asked.

"Fine. Have you heard anything?"

"Yes. Your mom is okay, they have given her an antidote." Steve said. "But she was exposed to a type of chemical that could harm you so Alex says you can't go near her until she is sure it is safe. But Alex said she will be fine."

"You promise?"

"Yes." Steve said. "And I am sure Martin and MJ will call you shortly with the same news."

"Thanks for telling me."

"Of course. Anything else I can do for you."

"No."

"Okay, well I'll leave you to it. But if you need anything call."

"I will."

"Steve?"

"Yes?"

"Are you doing okay?" Alex asked.

"Just focus on yourself." Steve said. "And call if you need anything."

"Okay. Actually Steve, there is something you can do."

"Sure what?" He asked.

"When Alex let's mom out of the DEO. Can you tell her not to come here."

"Umm-" Steve said confused.

"I mean not straight away. Can you take her somewhere for a day and make sure she is okay, like really okay?"

"Your mom will fight that." Steve pointed out.

"I know, but she needs looking after."

"I'll do all I can." Steve replied.

"How's aunt Kara?" The younger Kara asked when Alex entered the her room in the infirmary where the younger group were waiting with Chewie.

"Okay. She just needs time to recover." Her mother said wearily. "How are you?"

"I'm okay. Pain is not as bad."

"Good." Alex smiled before looking round the room. "The rest of you can go home soon."

"And me?" Kara asked hopefully.

"Tomorrow." Alex replied. "For now get some rest." She added before leaving. As she left Kara looked at her brother.

"Fine, I'm going." MJ said hurrying after his mother.

"Mom." He said catching up with her in the hallway.

"MJ, you okay?" She asked turning only to find herself being hugged. "What's wrong?" She asked concerned.

"Nothing." He said holding her. "Kara said you needed a hug and she obviously can't give you that, so you get me."

"Hey. How are you feeling?" Steve asked as he returned to Kara's room, switching places with Eliza.

"Terrible." Kara said not opening her eyes.

"Want me to leave you in peace?"

"No. Stay." Kara said before sniffing. "Are they donuts?"

"Yes, Martin got them. I know you don't feel like them now, but I thought when you were feeling better you might want them." Steve said walking to Kara and putting the bag down on the small table.

"Thanks." Kara smiled cracking her eyes open.

"Should you be doing that?"

"Light doesn't hurt any more." Kara said as Steve squeezed her hand.

"That's great." Steve smiled.

"Did you get any sleep?"

"Not really, but I did call Alex, and she is okay."

"Really?"

"Worried about you, but Matt is looking after her." Steve smiled.

"Thanks for looking out for her."

"You don't need to thank me." Steve said. "But you do need to do is rest."

"Will you stay with me?"

"Of course."

"Isn't that the wrong way round?" Lena asked looking into the isolab a few hours later.

"Hmm?" Alex asked.

"Isn't Kara meant to be resting and Steve babysitting?"

"Yes." Alex said looking into the isolab where Steve was sleeping on chair as Kara was throwing balls of paper at a trash can. Confused Alex entered the lab and Kara whispered.

"Finally."

"What?" Alex asked.

"I'm so bored. Can't I go home?"

"No."

"Can I have a tablet so I can watch some movies?"

"You want me to take the tablet off your niece?"

"No. How is she doing?"

"Complaining less than you, just." Alex said. "There is no sign of infection so she can go home tomorrow."

"And me?"

"We'll see."

"Can I at least have a phone so I can call Alex? Or a charger so I can use Steve's?"

"Here." Alex said handing her sister her phone.

"Thanks." Kara said before looking at the display. "Wait it is eleven am? How long was I out for?"

"No eleven pm, here. Later in Arizona. You were out for a few hours." Alex said. "You had us really scared."

"Sorry. Where's Eliza?"

"Sleeping."

"Which is what you should be doing." Steve said from the chair.

"Sorry, did we wake you?" Kara asked.

"It's fine. How are you feeling?" He asked before seeing the empty donut bag. "Well that's a good sign."

"Sorry, did you want one?" Kara asked.

"No." Steve smiled. "But seeing your appetite is back, why don't I get you some food and let you two talk?" He said squeezing her hand before leaving.

"So how are you doing?" Alex asked once he was gone. For a minute Kara didn't say anything and Alex started to wonder if she had heard. Eventually Kara said.

"I can't keep doing this."

"Doing what?"

"This. I thought I was going to die. How many times have I come close, but to what end? The bad guys just keep coming." Kara said sounding lost.

"And you keep winning. But you have done plenty, you don't have to keep fighting."

"Don't I? If I don't who will? And if there is no one what type of world will Alex, Kara and MJ live in?" Kara said before adding. "I feel like Sam Beckett. Stuck in a loop of my own making."

"Who does that make me? Al?" Her sister asked.

"You'd prefer Gooshie?"

"No, Al is good." Alex said. "But don't get sidetracked with TV. Talk to me."

"How do I even know if what I am doing is right?"

"Well, the city is safe. The kids are safe. You're safe." Alex said.

"Those babies aren't. There is nothing we can do for them." Kara reminded her. "And then there is Lex. What if he goes after Lena?"

"I can look after myself." Lena said from the doorway. "But you need a break."

"I can't. Every time I try something happens."

"Well, we should have forced you." Lena said. When Kara didn't reply Alex and Lena silently watched her.

"What else have we missed?" Kara eventually asked.

"What do you mean?"

"You are the most paranoid person I know. I know you have thought about everything we could have overlooked. Is there a bigger bad guy out there."

"Firstly, I'm not sure who should be more insulted Lena or me. But yes we have considered it."

"What if Indomitable wasn't the end game? What if he was just a stepping stone?" Kara asked.

"Kara, there will always be another bad guy. But we will prepare for everything." Alex assured her, before Kara once again fell silent.

"I made Alex hate me." Kara said quietly.

"What?" The older Alex asked lost.

"At Thanksgiving." Kara said. "She said she wished I wasn't her mother and she'd be better on Dakran. And it hurt so much, but maybe she wasn't wrong."

"Kara, she was suffering from a severe hormone imbalance. She wasn't in control." Lena said.

"I know."

"But it still hurts. I know." Alex said. "Why didn't you tell me what she said?"

"Because she didn't mean it. Like Lena said she wasn't in control."

"But it still hurt." Alex said. "And no matter how you argue it and explain it, it still hurts. But just like MJ was, Alex is overwhelmed with guilt and you can't ever let her know how much it effected you or how much it continues to effect you." Her sister said. "But you can still talk to us about it."

"Sometimes I find myself lying awake at night wondering if she was right. And after I was injected with whatever I was injected with, I was lying there in pain and in that moment I was convinced Alex was right." Kara said.

"If Alex truly believed she'd be better off on Dakran she'd be there. We both know she is resourceful enough. But she isn't because her home is here with you and she loves you more than anything." Lena said.

"Then why do I feel this hole in my heart? It is like when I first arrived from Krypton. It is like a darkness."

"Kara, you have been through so much." Alex said sitting on the side of the bed. "And you never stop to worry about the toll it takes on you. And that is on us. But that stops now."

"I can't. I need to look after Alex."

"Did Steve tell you what Alex said?" The older Alex asked.

"No. What?"

"She said, when you are released she didn't want you going to Arizona, not straight away. She wants Steve to take you somewhere for the day and really look after you. And that is exactly what is going to happen." Her sister said. "But first you need to let out everything that you are bottling up."

Looking as lost as she had done when she had first arrived on Earth Kara started to cry as Alex pulled her in for a hug.
