Hilary smiled contently to herself as she stared out at the ocean, the blue water reflecting the bright orange sunset that hung over it. Her day in Hawaii had been nothing short of amazing. She had done so many things she could hardly keep track! She was toured around the islands and tried out tropical foods she would never get to eat in Japan, and visit all places of tourist attractions, and especially the beach where she enjoyed surfing and learning to know more about the history of the islands. It had been an incredible day.
Now all had been reunited where they had decided to cook and camp out for the night…just like old times. They had finished dinner just in time for the sunset, which thrilled Hilary. In her mind, there was nothing more beautiful than watching a colorful sunset over the water.
Well…maybe there was something that could've made it more beautiful…
"So? What do you think?"
Hilary jumped a bit and whipped her head around. Tyson was standing nearby with a grin on his face, but soon lowered himself so he was sitting right beside her.
"Of the sunset?" Hilary asked, nodding towards the sky. "It's incredible!"
"Yeah, but I actually meant all of Maui," Tyson chuckled. "What do you think of it?"
Hilary let out a long breath before beaming at Tyson. "Maui is perfect. The beach, the resort, the islands, and all the local people we met! Everything was so incredible! Plus the food, the shopping…Tyson, I don't think I could ever get tired of this! Thanks for bringing me here!"
Tyson smiled and looked out at the ocean. "I feel the same way. I had a hard time leaving this place myself. I was waiting for a chance to visit again. But…it wouldn't have happened if you didn't pull out the chit from the bowl."
"Oh yeah…we were having a hard time with that decision, but you know what, I think it's fate!"
Tyson smirked, crossing his arms trying his best not to diss her fortune telling. "That fate stuff does work in our favor once in a while. Anyway, glad that we came here. So much has changed. I could really see a life here you know…"
Hilary paused at Tyson's thoughtful tone and looked him up and down before asking, "do you think you're going to stay here?"
"Oh, I don't know!" Tyson laughed, quickly breaking his contemplative state. "I haven't thought about any of that yet. I just like to live in the present, you know?"
Hilary snickered at this. "All too well."
"I've had so much fun here, it's like this place was built for me. I am just hoping to take an early retirement and bring Gramps here." Tyson continued, his smile widening. Hilary felt a pang in her heart when he said that, but quickly recovered when he added, "I just wish you and Kenny could stay here, too."
With that, Hilary's chest swelled. She blushed, grateful that Tyson likely couldn't see it through the sunset reflecting on her face, and murmured, "That's very sweet of you. But we just can't, and you know why. All of us can't be together for the rest of our lives Tyson. Someday, we'll all have to go our separate ways."
Tyson was visibly disappointed, but after a second, covered it up with a sympathetic smile. "I know. It sure was nice to think about, though."
Hilary returned his smile and looked ahead of her once more. "You know…I'm glad you love it so much here in Maui. But…I can't lie. There's no place like home. Our sweet Tokyo."
Blinking, Tyson smiled warmly, "That makes the two of us. I talk big, but I don't think I can ever leave that dojo. Besides, I'll always come back home."
"Yes, before you leave for another Tournament," Hilary sighed. "I meant…" She trailed off, the words dying in her throat. Growling to herself, Hilary continued, "forget it. It's stupid."
Tyson frowned and inched closer to Hilary. His hand wound up on top of hers, causing her blush to deepen. Whether it didn't mean anything to him or simply he wasn't affected, Tyson didn't bother to move it. "Come on, Hil, you can tell me."
Hilary winced and looked over her other shoulder, so all Tyson could see was the back of her head. "I meant it's nice when we are all together…and, these days don't go by so fast. We don't grow up so fast…"
"Oh," Tyson breathed, the weight of Hilary's words finally falling on him.
"I don't ever want you to stop doing what you love," Hilary quickly continued, whipping her head around so she was finally facing Tyson again. "And I know that you love travelling. But still…I wish I could do it a little closer to home. Or that we could hang out more often. I miss you a lot when you're gone."
Unless she was seeing things, Hilary was convinced there were tears shining in Tyson's warm brown eyes. Still, he managed a smile, and assured her, "I'm never really gone, Hil! I know I might not be in Tokyo, but I'm always there for you. Our texts and our phone calls…they mean the world to me, because I know that you're always there for me too."
Hilary smiled. It wasn't exactly the answer she wanted, but it was hard to be upset with. Getting lost in the moment, and without much thought, Hilary leaned over and rested her head on Tyson's shoulder. He jolted a bit at the contact, but soon relaxed, keeping his hand right over Hilary's. Amazingly, none of it felt awkward to him. In fact, it felt right. So, they both stayed that way, not saying anything as they both continued to watch the sunset.
"I do want to stop one day…for good." Tyson finally spoke, breaking up the comfortable silence that had settled between the two. He glanced down at Hilary, who had rolled her eyes up to look at him. She didn't dare move from her current position. "Once I've managed to do everything I wanted to, and I've realized my dream, I am gonna kick back and start an academy for beybladers. And then, that way, all of us can be together…"
Hilary let out a gentle breath and nuzzled her head against Tyson's shoulder. "Well then…I'll just have to keep being there for you, so you can make all of your dreams come true."
