Chapter Twenty-Two

As Aster stays at his prison for a while, a new day approaches. Eda had taken the girls and King to the local slayground. The girls watch King play about though Luz was nervous.

"What if he gets hurt? What if the kids are mean to him?" asked Luz visibly nervous and gasping. "My parental instincts are freaking out, man."

"He's fine," said Eda, pointing at King. "Look at him."

"He's probably been here plenty of times before we even came to the isles Luz," said Danielle, watching King trying to climb a slide. "If something goes wrong, we'll intervene then, 'kay."

"Okay," said Luz, staring at Danielle. "It does look like he's having fun. Aw. I wonder what cute little game he's playing."

"Stand back, cretins," shouted King, finally reaching the top of the slide. "Yes! Yes! This is a throne worthy of a tyrant. Bow to me you snotty underlings. Bow!"

"King," said Danielle, shaking her head and sighing.

"Yes, appease your master," said King, seeing two kids bow to him in their own way.

"This isn't for standing, it's for sliding," said a Red-Haired Kid, pushing King down the slide. "You try."

"Whoa, whoa!" shouted King, tumbling down the slide before running over to Eda and the girls. "Eda! That monster took my throne."

"You mean the baby?" said Eda, staring at King.

"No, the usurper," replied King, pointing over to the Red-Haired Kid. "I want you to go over there and blow him up. Kaboom!"

"Kaboom!" said the Red-Haired Kid, riding a spring rider.

"King, that's not right," said Danielle, staring at King. "But it wasn't also right for him to push you like that. Um… let's see…"

"Yeah, I'm not using Owlbert to blow up a five-year-old," said Eda, unscrewing Owlbert from the staff and petting him, warbling in the process. "He's got better things to do. Like this..."

"Aaaaaw!" said Danielle, watching Owlbert being cute.

"Aw, what a sweetie," said Luz, watching as well. "How did you get him?"

"Get? I made Owlbert from the branch of an ancient tree," replied Eda, Owlbert hopping into her hand then to her shoulder, nuzzling her. "Oh, he's my palisman and we're bonded for life. I'd annihilate anyone who'd hurt him."

"I can't wait to get my own palisman," thought Danielle, smiling before feeling a certain energy within her pulse. "Huh?"

"Fine. Don't help," said King, staring at Eda and the girls before laughing. "Revenge will taste all the sweeter if they fall by my hand alone."

"Tag, you're it!" said the Red-Haired Kid, shoving King before laughing and running off.

"Okay, that was a little too rough," said Danielle, staring at King then at the Red-Haired Kid. "Maybe I should talk to him."

"Oh, man. Here we go," said Eda, staring at King. "King's squeak of rage."

"Huh?" said Danielle, about to walk over to the Red-Haired Kid.

"Nyeh... nyeh...," said King, before squealing while wriggling and punching the the air, pauses, then continues squealing as he charges after the Red-Haired kid.

"Oh…mio…" said Danielle, her laughter turning into squeaks and wheezing while holding onto the bench. "Oh signore... non posso... King's... adorabile"

"Danielle… stop…" said Eda, only to laugh as well. "You're… going to… get me… started…"

"It's contagious," said Luz, beginning to laugh as well before seeing something on the bottom off Owlbert's foot. "Hey, what's that?"

"That's his interlock," said Eda, regaining herself and pointing at the hole on the bottom of Owlbert's foot. "So, he only fits on to my staff. Every palisman has one."

"Eda!" shouted the girls, seeing Eda collapse on the bench.

"Luz? Danielle?" said Eda, somewhere within her mind and hearing the girls. "Hello? Luz! Danielle!"

"Eda! Eda! Wake up!" shouted Luz, seeing Eda finally stir awake. "Are you all right?"

"What happened?" asked Danielle, concerned while helping Eda up alongside Luz.

"What? Oh, no. The curse," said Eda, picking up her staff and leaving towards the direction of the house. "Hey, we have to get home. Now!"

"King, we have to go!" said Luz, gaining King's attention.

"Five more minutes, please!" shouted King, atop the jungle gym, facing the Red-Haired Kid.

"Sorry King," said Danielle, grabbing King off the jungle gym. "The Owl Beast is trying to get out again."

"Ah, man," said King, huffing before pointing at the Red-Haired Kid. "This isn't over."

"Okay, let's play again real soon," said the Red-Haired Kid, waving bye to King.

Mounting the staff, Eda, the girls and King head back to the owl house. Eda shudders every so often when she feels the Owl Beast try to surface. Reaching the house, everyone gets off the staff and enters the house.

"I'll go get your elixir," said Luz, staring at Eda as she slumps onto the couch.

"Don't worry about it," said Eda, waving at the girls. "I'll get it myself in a bit."

"You sure," asked Danielle, concerned.

"Do you need me to stay home and take care of you?" asked Luz, before gasping. "I could put King in a little doctor's outfit."

"Meh?" said King, trying to write or draw something on paper before looking at the girls and Eda.

"No one wants to see that," said Eda, staring at King.

"I do," said Luz, still thinking of placing King in the doctor's outfit.

"Look, I know how to take care of myself," said Eda, staring at the girls. "I've had this curse longer than you've been alive."

"I'm still gonna make you some soup," said Danielle, heading towards the kitchen. "Maybe use some of the vegetables from the garden."

"I still can't believe how fast that garden of hers have grown," said Eda, righting herself into a sitting position. "To think that lesson really blossomed for her."

"And yet, mine has barely sprouted yet," said Luz, remembering the day Danielle asked Eda if one of their lessons was growing magical plants and such. "So, how'd you get it?"

"I don't know," said Eda, grunting.

"You don't know?" said Luz, staring at Eda, concerned.

"Somebody gave it to me. I don't know who and I don't care because I'm fine, all right?" said Eda, staring at Luz. "Anyway, don't you have plans with Tweedledum and Twerpledee?"

"Well, Willow, Gus, and I are going to the grudgby game between Hexside and Glandus High," replied Luz, staring at Eda. "Though I'm still trying to figure out how to get Danielle to go."

"Not interested," shouted Danielle, hearing Luz from the living room.

"Since when are you into sports?" asked Eda, screwing Owlbert back onto the staff.

"Since I found a little something called Hexside Pride," replied Luz, before grunting. "To think that Glandus, whoever they are, would dare face us. But if you need me to stay..."

"Gross. Sympathy," said Eda, before pointing to the outside. "Go! Go have fun at sport."

"Hooray! Hooray for sport! Hugs and kisses, King," said Luz, kissing the top of King's skull. "Mwah! Don't spend all night plotting revenge."

"That drooly-faced heathen will know my wrath," said King, drawing out his plans.

Leaving the owl house, Luz heads towards Hexside. Spotting Willow and Gus near some weird dragon bus, Luz walks over but doesn't pay attention as she is thinking of some cheers.

"Hexside's gonna wreck your side. Huh, no. Hexside is the best side in the west side," said Luz, shuddering before the dragon bus tries to bite her. "Ah! Friends."

"Game day roar!" shouted Gus, getting excited alongside Willow and Luz.

"Happy game day, fellow, uh... Are we Hexidians? Hexies?" asked Luz, before gasping. "Hexoleos?"

"Actually, most people call us...," said Willow, putting on a serious face. "Winners."

"Grudgby games are the best. The players go through these action-packed trials. And the audience gets to wave flags. Look, I practiced," said Gus, taking out two flags and waving them about.

"Is it weird that I'm not wearing anything Hexside?" asked Luz, looking at her hoodie.

"Um, it's weirder that you're wearing Glandus colors," said Willow, pointing at a sign showing the teams.

"Get ready to be creamed, Glandus nerd," said a very tall Male Construction Hexside Student, pushing Luz down with his finger.

"Hey! I'm a Hexside nerd," shouted Luz, before grabbing the hem of her hoodie. "Gotta change out of this shirt. Where can I get a Hexside one?"

"I know," said Gus, pointing at the school with his flags. "There's a lost and found box in the cafeteria."

"Ah! The lost and found. Where mouthguards go to retire," said Luz, heading inside and towards the cafeteria and finding what she wanted in the lost and found before exiting the school doing a split. "Goooo, Hexside! Well, I never did that before. Uh, where is everyone?"

"Hexside rules!" shouted the very tall Construction Hexside Student, hanging onto the banner on the dragon bus that was flying away.

"Oh, no! Come back!" shouted Luz, seeing the dragon bus fly away before spotting Willow and Gus. "Why didn't you guys board the bus?"

"We weren't going to leave you behind," replied Willow, staring at Luz.

"I was," said Gus, staring at the ground.

"Gus!" said Willow, elbowing Gus.

"Can we walk to Glandus?" asked Luz, staring at Willow and Gus.

"We'd never make it in time. Glandus is..." replied Gus, rolling his flags around before pointing with them. "All the way out in the middle of the island."

"Typical Glandus," said Luz, scoffing.

"And my parents are working, otherwise I'd see if they could give us a ride on their staff," said Willow, staring at Luz.

"A staff... because staffs fly," said Luz, thinking of a plan. "Of course. I can get us a staff."

"You can?" asked Gus, staring at Luz, confused.

"Yes, come on," said Luz, grabbing Willow's and Gus's hands and dragging them to the owl house.

Back at the owl house, Danielle was just about to finish the soup she was making. As for King, he just finished up his plan on dealing with the Red-Haired Kid. Walking on up towards Eda's room. King opens the door with some papers in hand.

"Eda! Great news. I thought of the perfect way to get revenge on that usurper. Now, don't be put off by the complicated premise. I'll break it down for you in small pieces. Huh?" said King, holding up a piece of paper reading Fire? before seeing Eda as the Owl Beast. "Owl Beast! Stay back!"

"King," shouted Danielle, hearing King falling down from the kitchen. "Is everything okay?"

"Did you just listen to me? Uh, come here. Sit," said King, ignoring Danielle and seeing the Owl Beast listen to him. "Oh, this is an interesting development."

"King, I'm coming up with the soup," shouted Danielle, scooping the soup into a bowl and walking down the halls.

"Eda's only partially transformed which means she's totally suggestible. Yes. Yes! I think this will do nicely. Forget fire. I've got a greater force to unleash. You! You're going to help me regain my throne. I mean, if that's okay with you. Right?" said King, staring at the Owl Beast, seeing that one of the eyes is still Eda's, the Owl Beast growls. "I'll take that weird grumble as a yes. I'm just gonna grab a little bottle of elixir in case you go rogue on me."

"Hey Luz," said Danielle, seeing Luz run up the stairs. "What's the rush?"

"Now, to destiny's battlefield: the playground!" shouted King, grabbing a bottle of elixir and placing it in a messenger bag.

"King, are you home?" asked Luz, finally reaching the third floor.

"What?" said King, before staring at the Owl Beast. "Sit. Stay."

"Is Eda up?" asked Luz, seeing King exit Eda's room.

"Who? Oh. That Eda. No, no. She is out like a light," said King, closing the doors and chuckling before hearing the Owl Beast growl. "Oh, man. Can she snore."

"Oh, no," said Luz, staring at the floor. "I wanted to ask if I could borrow her staff but I know she needs her rest."

"Oh, I'm sure it's fine. It's fine," said King, grabbing Eda's staff and giving it to Luz. "Just take it."

"I can't," said Luz, looking at the staff in hand. "Not without Eda's permission."

"Well, there's your permission," said King, hearing the Owl Beast scream. "Off you go."

"I really owe Gus and Willow one. And it's just for the afternoon," said Luz, staring at the staff then King. "I'm sure Eda wouldn't mind."

"Not our generous, kindhearted Eda," said King, staring at Luz. "Big heart on her."

"I'll be back soon," said Luz, walking away.

"Close call," said King, hand on hip.

"What?" asked Luz, staring back at King.

"Nothing," said King, staring at Luz.

"Oh, okay," said Luz, walking away and going down the steps, seeing Danielle with a bowl of soup. "Smells good."

"It's a hit back home in autumn and winter," said Danielle, seeing Luz take a bite.

"Deliciosa!" said Luz, enjoying the flavorful soup before heading downstairs. "You, Danielle, have a gift."

"Hehe," said Danielle, slightly blushing.

"Close call. And now revenge. Right, Owl Eda?" said King, before opening the doors to Eda's rooms and seeing her munching on a chair. "I'm feeling confident about this plan."

"Oh mio. The Owl Beast is out," said Danielle, standing in the doorway with the bowl of soup in hand. "King, we need to get her back to normal."

"No, wait," said King, only to see the Owl Beast sniff the bowl of soup.

"Do you… want some?" asked Danielle, holding the bowl of soup out slightly, the Owl Beast taking a lick before eating the whole thing, some of the soup landing on her. "Lovely. Hey, stop… that tickles…"

"Wow," said King, staring at Danielle and the Owl Beast. "You tamed it even further."

"Hmm… Hey there," said Danielle, petting the side of the Owl Beast's head, warbling in response. "Think you can leave Aster alone. He's a really good kid."

"Who doesn't know when to leave me alone," said King, seeing the Owl Beast growl angrily upon mention of Aster.

"Look, I don't know why you don't like Aster," said Danielle, staring the Owl Beast in the eyes, her hazel green eyes going white. "But I don't appreciate that you're trying to harm someone that I've come to care for. So back off."

"Whoa," said King, backing up slightly as well as the Owl Beast. "Still don't understand why your eyes do that."

"As long as I am here, you will leave Aster alone, capisce," said Danielle, glaring at the Owl Beast, nodding yes in response before getting more pets. "Good. Who knows, maybe you'll come to understand Aster one day and become friends."

Meanwhile, Luz had finally exited the house. Gus and Willow waited patiently while Luz talked to Owlbert.

"To Glandus High," said Luz, raising the staff and accidently hitting the house, Owlbert hoots. "Oh! Sorry, Owlbert. It's okay. We're just on our way to help some friends."

"Ooh!" said Willow and Gus, staring at Owlbert.

"Who's ready to board Air Luz?" asked Luz, mounting the staff.

"Feel that power-to-weight ratio," said Willow, mounting as well as Gus.

"Boys, prepare to fly," said Gus, looking at his flags.

"Next stop, Glandus High. Let's go," said Luz, the staff beginning to fly. "Step on it, Owlbert."

Luz slaps the staff causing Owlbert to squawk before rushing forward. The staff does a loop-de-loop, then runs into several trees. Luz, Willow and Gus grunts and screams. They hit a tree head on. Willow and Gus fall directly into a bush. Luz gets caught on a branch, then falls out of her Hexside sweater. Owlbert falls directly on top of his head before looking at his now cracked head and hoots.

"Is everyone okay? Huh?" said Luz, seeing Owlbert look at her fearfully, twisting himself off the staff and flying away. "Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no! Owlbert, come back!"

Luz, Willow, and Gus run through the forest. Owlbert hoots as he flies into a foreboding cave. Luz, Willow and Gus stop running, panting.

"Owlbert!" shouted Luz, trying to find Owlbert.

"Man, humans can run," said Gus, panting. "Must be their dorsal fins."

"He went through those trees," said Luz, running towards the trees. "Come on."

"We have to be careful," said Willow, stopping Luz. "It's really easy to get lost in this part of the forest."

"This is Eda's palisman, Willow. She'll kill me if we don't get it back," said Luz, staring at Willow. "Let's go."

"Wow," said Willow, walking alongside Luz and Gus into the cave. "I keep stepping on a lot of crunchy twigs."

"Those are bones, Willow," said Luz, correcting Willow.

"Not if I never look down," said Willow, staring up.

"This isn't any kind of forest I'm used to," said Luz, poking a spiderweb away with the staff.

"That's because this isn't a forest," said Willow, noticing the Bat Queen's babies approach them. "It's a nest."

"Hey, I remember you," said Luz, recognizing the babies. "You're Bat Queen's babies."

"Wait," said Gus, backing up. "The Bat Queen?"

"I think I'd rather take my chances with Eda," said Willow, also backing up.

"Uh, we're looking for a little owl and... there he is," said Luz, pointing at the staff before spotting Owlbert. "Owlbert, thank goodness you're okay. Come here, buddy. Time to go home."

"Hello, small human," said Bat Queen, stepping in front of Owlbert and hissing.

Meanwhile, King was able to convince Danielle to take the Owl Beast out to spread its wings keeping his plan a secret. King and Danielle climb on top of the Owl Beast and fly towards the slayground.

"Wait… why are we at the…" said Danielle, jumping down before staring at King. "King."

"Ahem…" said King, gaining the kid's attention that were at the slayground. "Listen carefully. You all have two choices. Grovel or…"

"Ah! A monster," shouted Braxas, alerting the other kids, screaming and running away.

"No no," said Danielle, gasping before trying to grab King. "King, get back here."

"Run! Despair! Your time has ended. Mine begins," said King, pointing at the Red-Haired Kid, making him whimper and cry. "Not so tough now, you spongy hatchlings. I will eat you."

"King, you are in so much trouble," said Danielle, climbing the jungle gym.

"All who stood in my way are gone. I declare myself despotic ruler of this land. Nothing can stop the almighty…" said King, climbing the slide and standing atop the jungle gym before seeing a shadow cover him. "Weh?"

"King…" said Danielle, staring at King with her hands on her hips. "This has gone to far. Scaring kids… claiming this jungle gym as your throne. This is not right and you know it."

"But… I am the King of Demons," said King, staring at Danielle. "I am their rightful ruler."

"No, you're not," said Danielle, staring at King.

"If I'm not the King of Demons," said King, staring at Danielle. "Then what am I?"

"You're a…" said Danielle, wondering how to word what Aster confirmed ages ago. "If I were to say titan, would you believe me?"

"Bwahahaha! Me, a titan? Nice one but I don't believe it," said King, still laughing before seeing the Owl Beast eating the slide. "Huh? Hmm? Hey. Whoa, whoa! No eating the throne."

"But… it's true," said Danielle, sighing and looking at King, her voice barely heard. "King, you really are a titan."

"Noooo!" said King, staring at the Owl Beast before seeing it resume eating the slide. "Stop that!"

"That's not good for your and Eda's stomach," said Danielle, staring at the Owl Beast and getting a happy shriek from it. "There's more of that soup back home."

Back with Luz, Gus, and Willow, they're were being stared down by the Bat Queen.

"It's the..." said Willow, pointing at the Bat Queen, scared.

"Bat Queen. I know. We kinda babysat her kids once. Don't worry. I got this," said Luz, before looking at the Bat Queen. "Hiya, BQ. My, your hair is looking greasy. And your kids, they're as hideous as ever."

"You know, that coulda gone worse," said Gus, letting go of Willow's arm.

"So... Owlbert ran away and I need to get him back. I'm just gonna grab him and we'll be on our way," said Luz, before Bat Queen puts a claw on her chest. "Ah!"

"To be careless with a staff, it's very serious," said Bat Queen, glaring at Luz. "I protect him."

"And thank you for that, uh, but he belongs to Eda, the Owl Lady," said Luz, removing Bat Queen's claw off her. "And you owe her a favor, remember?"

"Owl Lady is careless. Her staff left her sight. Taken by human who steals, hurts, frightens..." said Bat Queen, confusing Luz before her eyes glows yellow, the same as Owlbert. "He told me all."

"Owlbert, I never meant to hurt you," said Luz, kneeling down. "Please trust me."

"Trust must be earned..." said Bat Queen, Owlbert flying to Bat Queen's head before perching on a stump. "Through trials!"

"Trials?" said Gus, happily waving his flags.

"Luz, the Bat Queen is well-known for her impossible trials," said Willow, walking over to Luz. "I've never heard of anyone winning against her."

"But I have to get Owlbert back," said Luz, before looking at Bat Queen. "I accept your challenge."

"And we'll be right there with you," said Willow, before staring at Gus.

"Let the flags raise you up," said Gus, before Bat Queen closes her hand, conjuring webbing to encase him and Willow. "Hey!"

"What?" said Willow, staring at the webbing.

"No helpsies. Now, let the trials begin," said Bat Queen, pointing at a spider demon. "Milk the spider demon."

A spider with udders approaches Luz, holding a bucket. The spider demons growls. Luz grunts, and looks at Owlbert. Owlbert hoots, and tilts his head.

"All right. Come here, pal. Let's do this. If you run, you'll just make this harder for yourself," said Luz, running after the spider demon before staring at Gus and Willow. "Do not tell Danielle where the milk comes from."

"Right… there are two humans," said Bat Queen, before staring at Gus and Willow. "Where is other human? The one that does not know who she is? Light itself."

"Huh?" said Gus and Willow, looking at each other.

"Remove bees nest," said Bat Queen, seeing that Luz completed the first trial.

Luz climbs a tree, empty staff in hand. A giant buzzing bees nest is sitting in one of the branches. Luz raises the staff to smack the nest, but it turns into the head of a giant bee that screeches at her. Luz yelps, and falls out of the tree. Luz runs past Willow and Gus, screaming, the bee screeching after her.

"Come on. Almost got it. I am free! Bat Queen, you will rue the day you tried to trap…" said Gus, freeing himself from the webs before Bat Queen conjures more webbing to bind him. "Aaah."

"Give babies a bath!" shouted Bat Queen, seeing Luz pass another of her trials.

"Go, Luz" shouted Willow, watching Luz bathe the babies.

"Luz, we're here if you need us," said Gus, encouraging Luz.

"Yeah. Cut us free," said Willow, staring at Luz. "We can get Eda."

"No, I was selfish, and I hurt Owlbert. I need to do this alone so he knows I care about him," said Luz, before dumping a bucket of water over the babies, them being squeaky clean afterwards. "Aw!"

Back at the slayground, King has been trying to get Eda to listen to him. Danielle is just staring at the two, sighing, after her failed attempt to tell King who he was.

"No, no! Bad Eda! You are my beast and I control you," said King, punching the Owl Beast's wing. "Hey!"

"What? No!" shouted Danielle, trying to stop the Owl Beast. "What I said earlier extends to everyone in the owl house as well."

"What was I thinking? I'm such a fool. I'm such a..." said King, before spotting the elixir. "Genius!"

"Did the elixir…" said Danielle, seeing the Owl Beast swallow the elixir bottle. "It's not working… it's not working!"

"Great. Now, change back to Eda," said King, waving his paw. "Anytime now. Just magically transform."

"King!" shouted Danielle, conjuring her wings and flying up, staring at the Owl Beast. "What did I just say?"

"Whoa!" said King, getting entangled in the rope net.

"Huh?" said Danielle, hearing sirens outside the slayground. "That's not good."

"Uh, this is so embarrassing," said the Purple Haired Female Demon Hunter, exiting the carriage reading animal control.

"Hey, hey. This job is all we have right now. So, I wanna see happy faces. Okay?" said the Eye Patch Demon Hunter, before gesturing to the slayground. "Let's roll out."

"Ah! Animal control," said King, seeing the demon hunters come their way.

"Help me get King loose," said Danielle, staring at the Owl Beast, trying to get King loose from the rope net.

"Matches the description the parents called in," said the Eye Patch Demon Hunter, seeing the Owl Beast. "Bag it."

"Oh, no!" said King, seeing the Owl Beast approach the demon hunters, snarling.

"No," said Danielle, getting between the Owl Beast and the demon hunters, staring at the Owl Beast. "Stop. Let's just go home."

"Bag her as well," said the Eye Patch Demon Hunter, eyeing Danielle. "Emperor Belos still wants her."

"Cosa?" said Danielle, staring at the Eye Patch Demon Hunter.

The demon hunters combine spells to create a large green net. The Owl Beast tries to jump out of it, screeching in the process. A second net encases Danielle. The net shrinks to fit the Owl Beast and Danielle, making them fall to the ground. Eye Patch Demon Hunter shocks them and lifts them away. The Owl Beast and Danielle are put in the carriage, Danielle unconscious.

"Eda! Danielle!" shouted King, still stuck in the net. "Whoa! Awesome. Fantastic."

Back at the Bat's Queen nest, Luz has overcome every trial that the Bat Queen has put her in. Gus is able to free himself again, landing in a handstand.

"Yes, I am free again. I…" said Gus, only for webbing to encase him again, legs kicking about.

"Okay, Bat Queen. That's the last one. I've done all your chores. And I've proved my dedication to Owlbert," said Luz, staring at Bat Queen then Owlbert. "I'm so sorry for the pain I caused you, Owlbert. I promise to be more careful. Will you come back home with me?"

"No!" said Bat Queen, webbing encasing Owlbert now, before spreading her wings. "More trials. Last trial. You must face... me."

"What?" said Luz, seeing the Bat Queen come at her.

"You will never get him back!" said Bat Queen, landing near Owlbert.

"Luz, get us out. We can help." said Willow, seeing Luz fall to the ground before Luz got them free. "Look out!"

"I'll hold'em off with my flags," said Gus, seeing the babies come their way, before attacking him and Willow. "No! That was a bad plan."

The Bat Queen roars and chases after Luz in the forest. Owlbert slowly gets himself free.

"I won't let you imprison Owlbert," said Luz, stopping the Bat Queen with the staff before seeing an interlock on Bat Queens claw. "Is that an interlock? Bat Queen, you used to be on a staff, didn't you? You were a Palisman."

The Bat Queen gasps upon being found out. Back at the slayground, King finally gets himself free.

"Nyeh!" said King, finally getting himself free. "Oof."

"Your pride has destroyed you," said the Red-Haired Kid, standing behind King. "The throne belongs to me now."

"Over my dead body," shouted King, before hearing the Owl Beast shriek. "Eda! Danielle!"

"Yes, leave and forfeit your reign," said the Red-Haired Kid, spreading his arms out.

"Well, then, forfeit I shall," said King, running in the direction the carriage took the Owl Beast and Danielle. "I'm coming for you, Eda, Danielle. Huh?"

The animal control carriage is stuck at a snail road crossing. A giant snail with windows in its shell is slowly making its way across. The Owl Beast continues screeching. King runs to the animal control carriage. He hefts himself into the back through a window. Eda snorts while nuzzling an unconscious Danielle.

"You in there, Eda? Eda, I'm sorry. I used you for your strength 'cause I felt weak. I'm your friend. If only there were some way to remind you who I am," said King, before remembering Eda loving his rage squeal. "Wait a sec. Eda loves my rage squeal. Like this..."

"So tiny. So angry," said Eda, laughing and snorting before going back to her normal self.

"Eda, you're back," said King, hugging Eda.

"What happened?" asked Eda, wondering why she was in a vehicle.

"Okay, so I went to your room and you were the beast. And then..." said King, changing the story. "And then I woke up here one second before you did."

"Uh-huh. I'll deal with you later," said Eda, spotting Danielle and cutting the net that bound her before picking Danielle up. "But for now, you wanna bounce?"

"Yes, please," said King, staring at Eda.

"Mmm," said Danielle, leaning into Eda.

"Aah! Where did it go?" asked Eye Patch Demon Hunter, hearing an explosion in the back and seeing the Owl Beast gone before spotting Eda. "Hey, lady. H-Have you seen a monster that kinda looks like you? Lady! Hey, drop the human!"

Eda walks away from the carriage carrying Danielle, King following after her. Back at the Bat Queen's nest, Luz and Bat Queen are staring intently at each other.

"You were once a Palisman, weren't you?" asked Luz, staring at the Bat Queen.

"Yes, I was once part of a grand staff. A staff made for a giant," replied Bat Queen, staring at her interlock and turning away from Luz. "But I was broken, discarded."

"So, that's why you're so protective of Owlbert," said Luz, seeing why Bat Queen was acting like she was.

"I protect... all!" shouted Bat Queen, her eyes glow, and various palisman nearby are seen in the trees, they're eyes glowing as well. "I made home in forest. I'm here to take the lost. The forgotten."

"I understand. But Owlbert is not forgotten," said Luz, walking forward. "He has someone at home who loves him very much."

"He will not go back with you," said Bat Quen, turning away and walking.

"That's not your decision to make," said Luz, glaring at Bat Queen.

"I won't let him," shouted Bat Queen, turning around before Owlbert flies in front of Luz protectively, his eyes glowing alongside hers. "You... You care for her. Very well. Go. And take your friends."

"I don't think I'll ever be clean again," said Gus, drenched in the babies drool.

"Bat Queen, do you know what happened to your owner?" asked Luz, staring at Bat Queen.

"It has been thousands of years," said Bat Queen, staring at Luz sadly. "I've forgotten."

"If you ever want to search for the truth, I'll help you," said Luz, staring at Bat Queen.

"Thank you," said Bat Queen, before flying away. "Watch over other human. She has… trials of own to overcome."

"Huh?" said Luz, wondering what Bat Queen meant.

"I can't believe you took on the Bat Queen," said Willow, hugging Luz.

"And we're not dead," said Gus, dancing around.

"Thank you for helping me get Owlbert back," said Luz, facing Willow and Gus. "I'm sorry we missed the game."

"Are you kidding? That was better than any grudgby match," said Gus, staring at Luz. "There were action-packed trials. I got to do my flag wave, and I'm slightly traumatized. Hooray!"

"Let's get this little guy home," said Luz, chuckling.

Heading back to the owl house, Luz parts way with Willow and Gus. Eda, Danielle and King were also not too far behind on arriving at the owl house. Danielle had finally regained conscious but still felt out of it because of the shock.

"And now you're a part of the boo‐boo buddy club," said Luz, placing a bandage on the crack of Owlbert's head while sitting on the couch in the living room.

"Owlbert, why are you off the staff?" asked Eda, leaning on the open door, Owlbert flying over to her shoulder, warbling. "Luz took you to get ice cream? Aw, that's... a horrible lie."

"I could use some ice cream," said Danielle, walking over to the couch and sitting. "Mint chocolate chip, the green one."

"Well, lucky for you both I don't care right now," said Eda, walking away. "I'm going to take a nap."

"I'll, uh, be at the playground," said King, only to be glared at by Danielle. "Or not."

"Yeah, I think you had enough playground today," said Danielle, leaning her head against the armrest. "Long day."

"We'll keep this one to ourselves, shall we?" said Luz, Owlbert flying back over to her and landing on her shoulder.

Meanwhile, upstairs in Eda's room, there are four empty elixir bottles on the floor. Eda ends up hacking up the elixir bottle that King threw into the Owl Beast's mouth.

"The elixir... It isn't working on the curse anymore. This is bad," said Eda, before hacking up a swing. "When did I swallow a swing?"

Back at Bat Queen's nest, Bat Queen is chasing her babies around, her hair held up with hair curlers. The babies land on a branch, chirping softly.

"Babies. To bed. And now it's time to have book before sleeping. Yes, consume. Grow wise. Avoid paper cuts," said Bat Queen, feeding her babies pages from a child's book before folding her wings around them then staring up at the night sky. "What is to happen to our world? Child does not know who she is. Light… guide down rightful path. Remember who you are."

Owl Pellet #1

(Set after Ch. 15 but before Ch. 16)

Waking up in her own room for the first time, Danielle stretches her arms. Her window blowing back and forth since she opened it before going to bed last night.

"Mmm, such a good sleep. Huh, what is…" said Danielle, seeing spiders on her fairy lights before feeling crawling sensations all over her and pulling her comforter off revealing spiders of various sizes crawling all over her.

An ear-splitting scream reverberates throughout the house startling everyone awake. Eda is stumbling down the stairs to find the source.

"Danielle, what's the…" shouted Luz, only for Danielle to run into the hallway, doing a crazy dance to get the spiders off.

"Ragno! Ragno! Toglili! Aaah!" shouted Danielle, before hightailing it past Eda. "Doccia! Doccia! Ho bisogno di una doccia!"

"What just happened?" asked Eda, staring at Luz and King, before Luz points into Danielle's room.

"Ooh, breakfast," said Hooty, gobbling up the spiders and the fairy lights before the fairy lights exploded in him, smoke billowing out of his mouth.

Owl Pellet #2

(Set the next day after Ch. 7)

It has been a week since the girls arrived on the Boiling Isles. King wanted to surprise the girls tonight by making the first ever dish he made. Calling out to Eda and the girls, King plates the food and puts it on the table. Eda and the girls enter the kitchen but upon noticing the dish Eda pales.

"Ooh, yay…" said Eda, sitting down and staring at the dish before her. "King's Delight. You didn't have to."

"Yes, I did," said King, wagging his tail and staring at the girls. "So, how is it?"

"It looks good and smells good," said Danielle, smelling the dish before eating a bite and blanching, covering her mouth. "It's…um…"

"De-Deliciosa…" said Luz, silently gagging while trying to keep a straight face. "So good…"

"What are we having tonight?" asked Hooty, coming in through the backdoor and spotting King's dish, squawking then hightailing it of the kitchen.

"Ignore him. Your dish… keeps getting… better and… better," said Eda, lying through her teeth while eating the dish, silently thinking. "So gross."

"Um, King, your dish is…" said Danielle, only to have her mouth covered by Luz's hand.

"So good… very good," said Luz, seeing King smile and silently shaking her head no to Danielle.

"But…" said Danielle, wanting to tell King the truth before seeing Luz and Eda stare at her, sadly looking at the floor. "Okay, I won't."

Owl Pellet #3

(Set after Ch. 7 but before Ch. 11)

"What do you think Eda?" said Danielle, covered in dirt after tilling and planting some herbs, vegetables, flowers and some magical plants, donning a cute little outfit. "Cute little garden, isn't it? Glad I wore pants."

"Whoa," said Eda, staring at the fields before her, a big field in the trees near her house. "This is not little."

"It's about the same size back home. Okay, maybe it is a little bigger" said Danielle, tilting her farmer's hat back before picking up some flowers. "I'm about to plant this one. Such a… nice… fra…gance…"

"Should have told her these were sleeping nettles," said Eda, grabbing hold of Danielle.

"What happened?" asked Luz, coming over from her plots.

"Sleeping nettles," replied Eda, leaning Danielle against a tree. "Don't sniff unless you want to end up like Danielle."

"Gotcha," said Luz, staring at the flowers.

"At least, it was only a small whiff," said Eda, pushing a lock of hair behind Danielle's ear. "It'll barely enhance her dreams. Aah!"

"You were a little too close," said Luz, seeing Danielle pull Eda into a cuddle.

"Hahaha," said King, laughing at Eda's predicament before seeing the fields. "Whoa!"
