Chapter Twenty-Four
The day to go to Hexside was close. The girls are in the owl house looking at a pamphlet that was given to them by Principal Bump. The girls already knew what tracks they wanted to study under.
"King, listen to this!" said Luz, holding up the pamphlet.
"Hey! Less read-y, more scratchy!" said King, laying on Luz's stomach.
"So," said Aster, laying on top of Danielle's head and staring at the pamphlet. "No abominations."
"Nope," said Danielle, folding the pamphlet back up. "It doesn't really interest me. That… and still don't like what happened that day."
"Sorry! Now that I'll be a student at Hexside, I wanna learn all about it!" said Luz, sitting up and showing King the pamphlet. "I've got a new crush, and her name is Education!"
"Nyah!" said King, biting a piece of the pamphlet off.
"That's not food King," said Danielle, grabbing the piece out of King's mouth.
"Your food is tastier," said King, wiping his tongue.
"Hey, freeloaders!" said Eda, kicking open the front door. "Guess what today is?"
"Is it your birthday?" asked Luz, staring at Eda.
"Is it my birthday?" asked King, staring at Eda.
"April 6," said Danielle, taking Aster off her head. "That's my birthday."
"Middle of winter," said Aster, slumping on Danielle's lap. "During a really bad blizzard."
"It's my birthday!" said Hooty, smiling.
"Remind me to make you a cake," said Danielle, staring at Hooty.
"Birthdays are boring back home," said Aster, laying down on Danielle's lap.
"No!" said Eda, closing the front door and opening the portal door. "It's human treasure day!"
"Wow," said Danielle, seeing Owlbert haul a big bag in and dumping the contents in the living room. "That's a lot of stuff you got there."
"Ahh, fresh garbage," said Eda, jumping on the pile.
"Ooo, gimme, gimme, gimme!" said King, grabbing a teddy bear that caught his eye. "Yes! Another worthy addition to my army of terror!"
"You really love your toys," said Danielle, seeing King pull the string on the teddy bear and the recording going off.
"Yup," said King, tossing the teddy bear in the air and grabbing it when it fell. "Truly horrifying!"
"Hey, there's a basketball," said Aster, jumping on it and rolling it out of the pile. "We can play horse again."
"Okay," said Danielle, picking the ball up with Aster on it. "Outside though. I don't want to break anything inside the house."
"I can always just fix it," said Aster, swishing his tail.
"Yo, kid. Your trash pile's getting cold. While mine's getting hot!" said Eda, staring at Luz before putting some clothes hangers on her ears. "I have never seen such an extravagant earring."
"Those are… clothes hangers Eda," said Danielle, correcting Eda. "But I bet if we shrink them down and added accessories they could pass as homemade earrings."
"Now you're thinking," said Eda, ruffling Danielle's hair and earning a smile.
"You can have my trash. Whoa!" said Luz, before turning the pamphlet around to the others. "Did you know that Hexside was built on the bones of its rival school? One it literally conquered!"
"Yes, I know all these things, I went there. It was the most harrowing period of my life," said Eda, looking at her reflection in a hand mirror while wearing the clothes hangers as earrings. "Oh, hello."
"Can you imagine it! Me, in the halls of Hexside, studying with Willow and Gus and—maybe even Amity! Amity! Oh cramity! We're supposed to meet so I can get my Azura book back!" said Luz, running towards the front door and opening it. "I love you guys!"
"And I love you, Lu…!" said Hooty, only for the front door to be slammed shut quickly. "Aaah!"
"Hold up Luz," said Danielle, reopening the front door. "I'll come too."
"Eh, who needs them?" said Eda, watching Danielle leave after Luz.
"Yeah! This bear could be our new Luz," said King, pulling the string and another recording going off before throwing it on the floor. "No! You're unbearable!"
Catching up with Luz, Danielle and Aster help her search for Amity. After a while looking around the market area, both Aster and Danielle spot Amity. Amity was wearing a black mid-sleeved dress with a gray belt fastened around her waist, orchid tights and black heeled boots with golden crescent moon buckles, and an amulet with an orchid gemstone.
"Hey Luz," said Danielle, pointing in Amity's direction. "Amity is…"
"Amity, Amity, Amity, Amity. Gotta find that… oh!" said Luz, spotting Amity. "There she is. Hey, Amity! Luz is finally here!"
"You think Luz likes Amity?" asked Aster, staring at Luz as she runs over to Amity.
"I know she wants to be friends with Amity," replied Danielle, looking at Aster then Luz. "But if you're talking like-like, I don't know how to respond to that."
"Hi Luz!" said the Blight Twins, popping in front of the girls. "Hi Danielle!"
"Gotcha Luz," said Danielle, grabbing Luz when she fell backwards.
"Awesome trust fall," said Aster, seeing how quick Danielle was in grabbing Luz. "Think we can do that."
"Oh… um… I don't know Aster," said Danielle, twiddling her fingers. "I've never been successful with them."
"Huh…" said Aster, staring at Danielle, confused.
"Edric! Emira! Stop bothering them!" said Amity, walking over. "Sorry, Luz, Danielle, they insisted on coming for some reason."
"Because we love you, baby sister!" said Emira, squishing Amity's face before being pushed away. "Ah!"
"They've been extra protective and nice towards me to make up for the library incident," said Amity, fixing her hair.
"And we still apologize every day," said Edric, leaning towards Amity.
"I remember hearing about that," said Aster, staring at the Blight Twins. "You two were being mean."
"Huh, never saw this creature before. Could it be…" said Edric, staring at Aster then Danielle. "The Wailing Star! You befriended that kid!"
"I'm not Rune," said Aster, glaring at Edric.
"Wrong person," said Danielle, staring at Edric.
"But the fur color in this area," said Edric, pointing at Aster's light blue fur. "And the stars…"
"Not the Wailing Star," said Danielle, still staring at Edric.
"Oh well. Want to have some fun with me and Emira?" asked Edric, putting a hand on her shoulder before Aster swiped at his hand. "Ow!"
"Hands off!" shouted Aster, glaring at Edric, his eyes going scarlet a little. "I almost lost her because of you and Emira that day."
"Okay, okay," said Edric, backing up with his hands up, Aster growling at him.
"Aster, calm down," said Danielle, rubbing the top of his head. "It's over and done with."
"I just don't want to lose you," said Aster, leaning into Danielle.
"In any case, here's your book," said Amity, handing Luz her book back.
"So, what'd you think?" asked Luz, holding her book.
"It was... fine," replied Amity, turning her head away.
"So fine you drew yourself with Malingale the Mysterious Soothsayer?" said Luz, pulling a drawing out of the book before Amity burned it. "This is great! Maybe we could even start an Azura club at school when we're classmates!"
"When we're what?" said Amity, staring at Luz.
"Surprise!" said Luz, linking arms with Danielle and showing the Hexside pamphlet. "We're enrolling at Hexside!"
"Looking forward to it," said Danielle, lightly scratching her cheek.
"And I'll be there as well," said Aster, puffing up his chest.
"Oh! Uh, sorry, but to be in my class, you need to take a placement exam and prove that you've mastered two spells," said Amity, opening the pamphlet up to a certain page. "I know you have your light thing. Uh, do you know anything else?"
"Uh-oh," said Danielle, staring at the Basic Runes requirement.
"Don't worry," said Aster, staring at Danielle. "You have both light magic and water magic. You'll pass."
"It's not the magic part I'm worried about," said Danielle, staring at Aster. "I'm having a little hard time with the runes."
"Oh," said Aster, before an idea popped in his head. "I know a way that can help. Magic writing!"
"Magic writing?" said Danielle, before a thought came to mind. "Like writing in the air with your own magic? That sounds interesting."
"It helped me," said Aster, staring at Danielle before drawing a rune in the air. "I believe it can help you too. Some runes alone like this, can cast a spell."
"Whoa," said Danielle, seeing the rune produce a gentle breeze before smiling. "This may help. Okay, Aster-sensei. Where do we begin?"
"Aster-sensei?" said Aster, staring at Danielle before smiling. "I like it."
"Placement exam? Spells?" said Luz, getting worried.
"Quit giving them a hard time, Mittens," said Emira, coming out from behind Amity.
"Yeah, of course they know two spells," said Edric, staring at the girls. "Right, Luz, Danielle?"
"Pff. Yeah. 'Course I know two spells!" said Luz, nervously laughing.
"Why is Luz lying?" asked Aster, staring at Danielle.
"I think because she doesn't want to disappoint them or something along that line," said Danielle, eyeing Luz.
"Because if you don't, they'll put you in the baby class," said Amity, opening the pamphlet up to another section.
"Even more motivation to learn runes quickly," said Danielle, staring at the page.
"Oooh! Brain idea!" said Edric, bending in front of the girls.
"What if we all trained together?" asked Emira, leaning on Amity, pushing her towards Edric. "We could show off what we know!"
"What do you say, Luz, Danielle?" asked Edric, staring at the girls.
"That doesn't sound like a bad idea," said Danielle, liking their idea for a change. "What'cha think Aster?"
"As long as they don't hurt you," said Aster, glaring at the Blight twins. "Then I'm okay. I get to see how good they are."
"Uh, actually, I have other training plans in a very faraway place that I have to go to right now. So does Danielle," said Luz, linking arms with Danielle then leaving. "Bye!"
"Whoa, hey," said Danielle, being dragged away by Luz. "Luz!"
Meanwhile at the owl house, Eda is in the kitchen. Eda had one of her hands detached holding up a cookbook.
"Wow, a surprisingly peaceful domestic moment," said Eda, humming. "When will it be ruined?"
"Eda!" shouted Luz, walking through the front door and slamming it.
"Luz, slow down," said Danielle, still being dragged by Luz.
"There it is," said Eda, staring in the direction the girls were coming from.
"Eda, Eda! Eda!" shouted Luz, running into the kitchen before falling. "You have to teach me a new spell right now!"
"Careful Luz," said Danielle, helping Luz up.
"Sorry, Luz! These vegetables won't cook themselves... yet," said Eda, pouring a potion on the vegetables which sprouted arms and legs. "Alright, everybody in the pot! Why do I always think that's gonna work?"
"Yikes," said Danielle, moving away from the running vegetables. "I wonder if there is a way to remove the effects off those vegetables. I won't be able to do it if they are alive like that."
"What do you mean?" asked Aster, staring at Danielle.
"I… um… don't know how to explain it," replied Danielle, watching the vegetables run in a different area of the house.
"But I need to know two spells to get into decent classes at Hexside. I can make light glyphs," said Luz, setting off a light glyph. "But at the end of the day, that's the only spell I know."
"And whose fault is that?" asked Eda, staring at Luz.
"Yours!" replied Luz, muffled and pointing at Eda.
"Ha! Yep. Got me there," said Eda, before looking at Aster and Danielle. "Aster at least is teaching you good."
"That I am," said Aster, puffing his chest out.
"Just teach me a spell now. Any spell!" said Luz, standing up and looking at Eda. "It can be the darkest evil."
"No! Not happening," said Danielle, staring at Luz. "You don't know what could happen if you dwell into the dark arts."
"But…" said Luz, staring at Danielle.
"There's a reason it's called dark arts," said Danielle, staring at Luz. "You could end up losing yourself to it. Or worse, someone else is sacrificed. Not only that what if you summoned something outside your control or even Eda's control. It's not worth it."
"Okay," said Luz, understanding where Danielle was coming from.
"Not even I like dark magic," said Aster, leaning into Danielle.
"Well, I have been researching my texts on wild magic, but I'm much too busy right now," said Eda, throwing a book into the pot.
"Come on, Eda! You're the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles," said Luz, staring at Eda. "How would it look if your apprentices got thrown into the baby class?"
"Hmm. Weaponizing my pride. Well played," said Eda, placing her hand back on. "Well, in that case, this looks like a job for magic boot camp."
"Did someone say boot camp?" asked King, opening the backdoor. "I agree to run it. We'll rise at dawn! You'll carry me on your back as I yell hateful things about your performance!"
"Not happening," said Danielle, staring at King.
"Nope. You'll have no part in this," said Eda, staring at King. "Luz and Danielle need to focus, and I can't have them go all weird when you do something adorable."
"I am not adorable!" shouted King, stomping his foot.
"Aww, he stamped his little foot!" said Luz, awing at King.
"His squeals are always cute," said Danielle, watching King slam the door multiple times before it actually shut.
"That's why baby titans are adorable," said Aster, holding a laugh back.
"Now, no time to waste. You'll have to follow my teachings exactly," said Eda, staring at the girls. "We gotta go somewhere special. Plus, I bet Danielle will learn something new with her magic."
"Yes!" said Luz, cheering.
"A place where magic energy just flows," said Eda, thinking of the place.
"Yes!" said Luz, climbing on the table.
After her little speak, Eda had the girls dress up in winter garb. Danielle ended up tossing the scarf and opening her jacket before leaving the owl house alongside Eda and Luz. Mounting the staff, Eda, the girls and Aster head up to the tallest point on isles.
"A place like, the Knee!" said Eda, spreading her arms out when they got to the knee and landed. "Danielle, close your jacket. And where is your scarf?"
"Not happening," said Danielle, feeling way too warm with the winter garb Eda gave her. "Scarf is back home."
"Yes!" shouted Luz, her screams echoing across the knee.
"Eda's right," said Aster, hiding underneath Danielle's beanie. "This is a good place to learn magic. It's practically flowing with it."
"The earliest witches came to the Knee to develop their magic, drawn to its natural power," said Eda, walking up the path to a set of ruins.
"It's beautiful!" said Luz, gasping at the sight before her.
"Bellissima," said Danielle, before seeing some spirits nearby. "I wonder what happened here?"
"Though, it's not without its dangers," said Eda, gesturing to the side where they were.
"A yeti?" said Danielle, staring at the white furred creature before her.
"No, the slitherbeast," said Eda, correcting Danielle. "Don't worry, if you don't mess with him, he won't mess with you."
"Then yeti beast," said Danielle, running after Eda after Luz blew a raspberry at the slitherbeast before it snapped the log it was chewing on in half before looking at the girls.
"Here's where we'll set up shop," said Eda, finding a new spot to teach the girls.
"I'll definitely learn my second spell here! Gorgeous views, magic in the air," said Luz, twirling around before walking near the ruins. "And best of all, we're completely alone!"
"Luz!" shouted Danielle, seeing a magic spell heading towards Luz.
"Watch out!" shouted Eda, pushing Luz down before staring in the direction where the magic spell came from, her staff drawn in defense.
"Sorry, whoever's over there!" said Amity, apologizing.
"Is this the place they wanted to train at?" thought Danielle, seeing Amity and her siblings.
"Forget teaching me a spell, just make me disappear," said Luz, ducking down and covering her face with her hat.
"Well, okay, but I've got a 60/40 record of making you re-appear," said Eda, before figuring out what Luz actually meant. "Oh! You meant... ah, never mind."
"Hey, Luz!" shouted Edric, waving at the girls. "Hey, Danielle!"
"Luz!" shouted Emira, waving as well. "Danielle!"
"Hey, it's us!" shouted Edric, trying to gain the girls attention.
"Okay, let's do this," said Luz, standing up and waving. "Hey, guys!"
"Who are they?" asked Eda, staring at the girls.
"Be cool!" said Luz, grabbing Eda's jacket. "If they know I haven't mastered two spells, they'll think I belong in the baby class!"
"What's that about the baby class?" asked Amity, walking towards Eda and the girls.
"Only that it's for babies, and Luz here clearly isn't a baby," said Eda, before whistling and walking away. "Nailed it."
"Amity!" said Luz, only to slip and pose on the ground. "Wha... What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to train," said Amity, staring at Luz. "I'm trying to beat Ed and Em's highest score on the exam."
"Aw, Mittens," said Emira, popping up from behind Amity. "That's impossible!"
"She still needs to use a training wand to learn new spells," said Edric, also popping up behind Amity. "So, what are you workin' on? Something powerful?"
"Do you really need to beat their high score?" asked Danielle, looking at Amity. "You're already really good."
"Thanks," said Amity, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "But, yes."
"Yup! Powerful spells!" said Luz, staring at the Blight Twins. "I'm workin' on one that's so crazy! Eda's a pretty incredible teacher."
"Why is she still lying?" asked Aster, staring at Luz.
"She really doesn't want them to think she can't and disappoint them," said Danielle, staring between Luz and the Blight Siblings. "Oh, Luz. I'd think they'd understand if you told them."
"Luz! Danielle! I shall now teach you how to identify different types of snow… by taste!" said Eda, carrying a basket of snowballs before shoving one in Luz's face. "Go on, eat the snow."
"Don't eat the yellow snow!" said Aster, staring at Danielle. "That's…"
"Don't worry," said Danielle, watching Eda and Luz. "I already know."
"Is this some kind of... special magic?" asked Emira, watching Eda and Luz.
"Ahem," said Amity, before walking away. "I don't think the Owl Lady wants to show us any of her powerful spells."
"Wait! Don't put all those in your mouth!" said Danielle, seeing Eda put a bunch of snowballs in her mouth. "This is not going to be pretty."
"Oooh," said Eda, clutching her head after swallowing all of the snowballs. "Brain freeze! Brain freeze!"
"Told ya," said Danielle, wincing at the sight.
"What's a brain freeze?" asked Aster, swishing his tail.
"The best thing is to actually experience it," replied Danielle, looking at Aster. "I've had them before and they are not nice. Wait… you ate all that ice scream that day."
"And felt awful after," said Aster, remembering that day. "It also felt like my teeth were freezing too."
"Well, it's like that in a way," said Danielle, staring at Aster. "But it hits your brain and also felt going down your spine."
"That doesn't sound pleasant," said Aster, leaning his head into Danielle's hair.
"See you around, humans!" said Emira, staring at the girls. "Good luck with your, uh, training."
"Aw," said Edric, Emira slapping the snowball out of his hand and dragging him away.
"Eda!" said Luz, staring at Eda. "Can you please take this seriously?"
"I think she is Luz," said Danielle, staring at Luz.
"You need to take me seriously. Go taste snow without my guidance, see where it gets you," said Eda, seeing Luz downcast before ruffling her hair. "Oh. Don't worry, kid. If you listen to me, soon you'll be doing stuff like that."
"Whoa," said Danielle, seeing Amity fire a fireball at a tree.
"And it won't be with some wack training wand, it'll be the real deal," said Eda, staring at Luz. "But you have to trust me, okay?"
"Okay," said Luz, nodding. "I trust you."
"We've covered snow, so now it's on to smelling moss," said Eda, taking out some moss and shoving it up her nose. "Now the trick is, you really gotta get it up in there."
"Ew," said Aster, watching Eda stuff the moss up her nose. "That's gross."
"Please tell me that my training doesn't cover that," said Danielle, backing up.
"Nope," said Aster, covering his eyes. "Is she still doing it?"
"Yup," replied Danielle, cringing. "Still doing it."
Back at the owl house, King is sitting in front of the front door. Francois, Bastion and the new teddy bear are in his arms.
"This is ludicrous! I once led armies. I can lead a dang boot camp! But I have no recruits," said King, before looking at Francois and the teddy bear. "Or do I?"
"Yep! It's your faithful pal Hooty reporting for duty!" said Hooty, staring at King. "Up at dawn, taking orders all day long!"
"Ugh, no! You are too desperate!" said King, before going back inside and grabbing a few more toys and setting them down. "Role call! New Guy, Aloysius Turtle, Chip, Beefy Bob, Francois, Bastion. Oh, you two are perfect already! As for the rest of you, I'm only saying this once so listen up! Huh, it's no fun if they don't tremble."
Not too far away, King spots the animated vegetables carrying utensils to the cliff. Tossing the utensils, the vegetables cheer in victory.
"Oh, okay, alright," said King, staring between his toys and the animated vegetables. "Yep, an idea is happening!"
Back at the knee, Eda is sipping a hot drink. For a while, Danielle was screaming for some unknown reason. Even the Blight Siblings were wondering what was going on. The girls end up walking back to Eda.
"Ugh. Okay. I've identified the smells of three different rocks, sorted all the twigs from big to small," said Luz, before staring at Eda.
"And I found Thing," said Danielle, pulling out Eda's gloved hand before covering Aster's ears. "Damn thing gave me a fright!"
"Ah, I was wondering where that thing went," said Eda, screwing her hand back on.
"It ruined the ice training," said Aster, pouting. "And the snow training."
"Still neat that they're part of the water element," said Danielle, wondering how to adjust her water magic for the two. "I was able to get my water magic boiling somehow, I should be able to get it cold enough for both ice and snow."
"The key is controlling the temperature at the right moment," said Aster, before hiding under Danielle's beanie. "It's getting a little cold. Curse this animal body of mine, brr."
"So, what now?" asked Luz, before hearing the Blight Siblings train.
"Hehehe," giggled the girls, seeing Edric pull Amity down in the snow with his magic.
"Hey. I know my lessons seem weird but this is what wild magic is all about!" said Eda, standing up. "Making a connection with nature. The earliest witches understood that. Human witches need to understand it, too. You wanna learn a second spell?"
"With all my heart," said Luz, staring at Eda.
"Then you have to learn from the island. Now look," said Eda, getting Luz to sit down on a rock nearby. "And think about what the island is trying to tell you."
"Think meditating will work for me?" asked Danielle, staring at Aster.
"I don't see why not," replied Aster, staring at Danielle. "If you're trying to go deep to figure out your magic, I'd be careful. Minds can be tricky."
"Okay," said Danielle, sitting near Luz and trying to get into a meditative state.
"As for me," said Aster, curling up under the beanie. "I'm going to stay warm under your hat."
"Alright, Luz. Look. Look with everything you've got. Focus," said Luz, before talking to her hands. "Focus? On what? On you'll be stuck in the baby class? No! Don't think like that! Face it, you'll never get a second spell following Eda's lessons. Silence, hands!"
"Is she…" said Aster, lifting the beanie before going back under. "Nope, not gonna question that."
"Amity! Dinner's ready!" shouted Emira, gaining Amity's attention.
"I caught a bat!" shouted Edric, catching a bat that was native to the knee.
"Edric, don't eat that," said Amity, placing her book and wand near their tent.
"If I wanna be in the same class as Amity, I'm gonna need to learn magic like Amity," said Luz, watching what was going on with Amity and her siblings. "Great work, Luz! Shh! I don't need your validation."
"It's hard to concentrate when Luz is talking," thought Danielle, trying to drown out the world around her.
Deeply breathing, Danielle calms herself to a point to when she is hearing a blizzard going on. Opening her eyes, Danielle sees a vast snow-covered field before her. Seeing a flickering flame in the distance, Danielle runs as fast as she can towards it.
"Hello there," said a Masculine Voice, Danielle staring at the person. "Nice to meet you again."
"You're…" said Danielle, finally getting a glimpse of the person before her.
A young man in his mid-twenties was sitting on a log. Short auburn hair, crystal blue eyes and a fair complexion. Stood at five foot eleven inches. Attire was a dark green hat that was normally seen on anime archers with a unique feather on the left side, a white heavy coat over a dark green tunic, brown pants, white furred boots, and dark green gloves. Also had pointy ears.
"Come on and sit," said the Young Man, gesturing to the log next to him. "Don't worry, I'm only here to help."
"You know… I've always seen you in my dreams, even till now," said Danielle, siting on nearby log and staring at the furry dragon that laid next to the Young Man. "Why is that? And where am I?"
"The word reincarnation applies to this," said the Young Man, staring at Danielle. "As for where we are, you are in my area, where my memories lie. This is what used to be Lorimar but is now Altena. An area strong in magic."
"Wait… Lorimar… Altena?" said Danielle, knowing those places. "But those places are… And that dragon…"
"Flammie," replied the Young Man, petting the white dragon who cooed upon being touched. "But this is a mere memory of her."
"No, that can't be… those places and dragon are game…" said Danielle, before a splitting headache came. "Aaaah!"
"Calm down," said the Young Man, rubbing the top of Danielle's head before seeing tiny cracks near the symbol on her forehead. "Dark is not playing around anymore. He wants this to end, just as well."
"No no-no… those are games," said Danielle, wincing from the headache. "They're not real. They're make believe! Aaah!"
"I believe Eda said it well that day you arrived on the isles," said the Young Man, seeing Danielle slowly fade back to consciousness while staring at him. "Every myth you humans have is caused by a little of our world leaking into yours."
"Huh?" said Danielle, completely fading and waking up back at the knee. "What just… ow!"
"Danielle!" said Aster, hearing Danielle wince. "Are you okay?"
"I will be… I think," replied Danielle, holding the side of her head. "Oooh."
"What was that?" asked Aster, seeing a big fireball go off nearby.
"I don't like the looks of this," said Danielle, getting up and running in the direction only to see Luz with Amity's wand and book. "Luz, what did you do?"
"I agree," said Eda, walking forward and staring at Luz. "What are you doing with that?"
"I'm doing magic, what would you have me do?" asked Luz, getting angry. "Eat more snow? Lick a rock?"
"Okay, so maybe my methods are... unique, but so is your magic, as is Danielle's," said Eda, staring at Luz. "Connecting to the island can help you both. That wand can't."
"Luz..." said Danielle, walking towards Luz with her hand out. "Please… give me Amity's wand."
"No," replied Luz, still angry and clutching the wand. "It's already helped me. Just watch what I can do!"
"Luz, don't!" said Danielle, running towards Luz.
"Wh... whoa!" said Luz, losing control of the wand and its magic sending the fireball in a certain direction.
"Oh no," said Danielle, hearing a roar before the slitherbeast from earlier jump over the trees near them. "Oh mio…"
"You've angered the slitherbeast," said Eda, staring at the slitherbeast. "You've angered the slitherbeast!"
"Oh mio," said Danielle, looking at the wound on the slitherbeast. "It's hurt."
"Yeah," said Aster, coming out from under Danielle's beanie and floating in front of her. "And also wants to harm the one that caused the pain. Meaning you're going to get hurt too and I won't allow it."
"Will it accept a heartfelt apology?" asked Luz, holding the wand up, burnt at the tip.
"I think it just figured out who caused it pain," said Danielle, seeing the slitherbeast stare at the wand in Luz's hand.
"Watch out!" shouted Eda, shoving the girls out of the way before being grabbed alongside Aster.
"Let me go, you big brute!" shouted Aster, his tail swishing about in Eda's face.
"Aster!" shouted Danielle, her hazel green eyes flashing white. "Let him go!"
"Eda!" shouted Luz, seeing Eda struggle in the slitherbeasts's paw.
"Luz!" shouted Amity, running over after hearing the slitherbeast roar.
"What did we miss?" asked Edric, catching up to Amity alongside Emira.
"And what are you doing with my wand?" asked Amity, noticing her wand in Luz's hand.
"Um…" said Luz, Amity grabbing her book and wand back.
"Mittens, we've got bigger problems," said Emira, looking at the slitherbeast before running in front of the girls and Amity. "Aw, he's so cute. Can we keep him?"
"It's no bat, but we could try," said Edric, conjuring a spell circle alongside Emira, lassoing the slitherbeast.
"You got it!" shouted Eda, staring at the Blight Twins, the girls and Amity. "Now finish it off!"
"Stay down!" shouted Danielle, conjuring a heart-based chain and putting it around the slitherbeast's neck.
"I'm on it!" said Amity, trying to cast a spell only to see that her wand couldn't anymore. "What? Did you use this all up?"
"I... I didn't know!" said Luz, scared and nervous.
"Come on, Luz!" said Emira, holding the slitherbeast down as best she could.
"Do those powerful spells you were talking about!" said Edric, staring at Luz.
"But I don't actually... know any," said Luz, finally admitting the truth.
The slitherbeast is able to get itself free. Emira pushes Danielle back when the slitherbeast scoops her and Edric up. Danielle looks in the direction the slitherbeast has taken Aster, Eda, and the Blight Twins.
"I-I failed… A-A-Aster… I won't let you take him from me," shouted Danielle, her hazel green eyes going completely white, white energy-based dragon claws cover her hands and the symbol appears on her forehead, the small cracks glowing. "You will not!" "Danielle, wait!" shouted Luz, seeing Danielle run in the direction of the slitherbeast.
"Edric! Emira!" said Amity, before running to the edge of the cliff. "Nooo!"
"What do we do?" asked Luz, staring at Amity.
"I am going after them," said Amity, raising her arm. "You are staying here."
"But the beast has Eda and Aster!" said Luz, staring at Amity.
"And because of you, it also has my brother and sister! I don't know the connection between Danielle and Aster but she clearly flipped when he was taken," said Amity, before conjuring a spell circle, trapping Luz in a magic cage. "Now stay put. You'll only get hurt."
"Amity! Wait!" said Luz, seeing Amity leave and the cage shocking her. "Stupid island. Ugh! Ow. You were supposed to teach me magic. But I'll never learn more than this."
Staring up as the light spell flies into the night sky, a constellation is shown. Snow is falling as she looks.
"Wait. Is that... a light glyph? But what does that mean?" said Luz, a snowflake falling on her hand, a unique glyph is seen. "Whoa. It means... magic is a gift from the island. It means... magic is everywhere."
After tracing the glyph in the snow, ice pops from the glyph. Luz ends up grabbing a big stick and starts drawing a bigger version in the magic cage before activating it.
"Magic is everywhere!" said Luz, flying in the air before falling to the ground, the snow softening her landing. "Whoooo—aaah! My second spell! Thank you, snow! Thank you, island! Thank you, Eda. Eda! I have to save her. And Aster. And Danielle if she's been caught."
Meanwhile back at the owl house, after King animated his toys and bossed them around, they ended up rebelling. Hooty has a set of headphones on, oblivious to what's going on in the house.
"Hey! How dare you mutiny! Unhand your commander right now! Ah!" shouted King, being tossed out a window in the front yard with Francois and Bastion. "I gave you life, I can take it away! Ah! Hooty, Hooty! Great news, buddy, you can be in the boot camp! First task: destroy the boot camp."
"Hmmmm, no thanks!" said Hooty, the headphones falling off him.
"What? But you begged to join!" said King, staring at Hooty confused.
"Sorry. You said I was desperate, so now I'm playing hard to get," said Hooty, spinning his head upside down.
"Grrr!" said King, angrily. "What do you want?!"
"I don't know," said Hooty, looking at King. "What are you offering?"
"Hmm..." said King, holding up a piece of chalk and drawing a body on the door around Hooty. "I also give you my desserts for the next three days."
"Wow, this is incredible! It's so real! You got yourself a deal!" said Hooty, opening the door. "Hooooot!"
"This day shall live in infamy," said King, seeing Hooty tear the toys apart bit by bit while covering Francois and Bastion eyes.
Back at the knee, Danielle's situation was getting worse. Danielle's breathing was getting heavy and was wincing in pain. Luz had just found the slitherbeast's lair before Danielle. The slitherbeast had spat some purple goop and stuck Eda, Aster, and the Blight Twins to the cave wall.
"Ew, gross," said Aster, struggling against the purple goop. "I hate this body. It's too limiting."
"Don't worry. We'll be fine!" said Emira, before some skeletons dropped from the ceiling of the cave.
"No, we're gonna die," said Edric, staring at the skeletons.
"That's right. Death is here," said Luz, holding a skull up and startling Eda, Aster, and the Blight twins before showing herself. "Just kidding, Luz is here!"
"What's death?" asked Aster, staring at Luz.
"Kid, get outta here!" said Eda, silently eyeing the Blight Twins. "I'm just gonna sneak away when the thing starts eating the twins."
"Wait, what?" shouted Emira, surprised while Edric gasps in shock.
"Don't worry, Eda, I get it now. I was so obsessed with learning my second spell, I didn't listen to you. But now I'm gonna save you!" said Luz, jumping away. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah."
"Well, at least I got to see her misplaced confidence one last time," said Eda, only to realize one thing. "Wait… where's Danielle?"
"Luz!" shouted Amity, surprised that Luz was in the cave as well. "H-how did you get past the barrier?"
"Magic! Literally! Now, forget that, because you and I are gonna have to work together if we want to save everyone. Okay, here's what we're gonna do," said Luz, whispering in Amity's ear.
"Ugh, I hate garlic," said Eda, sneezing when the slitherbeast garnished her and the Blight Twins with some seasonings.
"Hey! You big idiot!" shouted Luz, gaining the slitherbeast's attention. "Over here!"
"Amity!" said Edric, seeing Amity approach them after the slitherbeast chased after Luz.
"Use that fire spell we taught you!" said Emira, staring at Amity.
"But I can't do it without the wand!" said Amity, staring at her siblings.
"Yes, you can," said Emira, staring at Amity. "Just focus."
"Okay," said Amity, slowly conjuring a spell circle and producing a small pink fireball.
"Cool," said Emira, seeing Amity succeed with the spell. "I didn't think you could actually do it."
"Luz!" shouted Amity, hearing Luz scream after freeing Eda, Aster, and her siblings.
"You…" said Danielle, entering the area where she heard Luz scream and spotted the slitherbeast. "Give Aster back."
"Gotcha!" said Luz, setting off a big glyph under the slitherbeast, sending it flying.
"Don't… interfere…" said Danielle/Young Lady, conjuring a bunch of light chains and pulling the slitherbeast back down before creating some ice spears out of the ground pointing at the slitherbeast before staring into its eyes. "Don't interfere…"
"Danielle…" said Luz, hearing the slitherbeast scared and whimpering. "Just what…"
"You want me to teach you kids something cool?" asked Eda, running out of the cave and seeing the slitherbeast down.
"Yes!" shouted Emira and Amity, Edric also agreeing. "Yes, please!"
"Sleep spell!" said Eda, her spell circle passing through the slitherbeast.
"Danielle…" said Aster, seeing Danielle walk over to the slitherbeast and healing its wound. "What are doing?"
"Whoa…" said Edric, staring at Danielle. "What's up with Danielle?"
"Ooooh," said Danielle, going back to normal and feeling lightheaded. "What just…"
"Gotcha," said Eda, grabbing Danielle and preventing her from falling.
"You know… that was kinda hot," said Emira, staring at Danielle.
"No no," said Danielle, staring at Emira and hiding behind Eda. "I'm straight, totally straight."
"Darn," said Emira, snapping her fingers.
"So that means," said Edric, leaning towards Danielle. "You're available."
"Back off," said Aster, swiping at Edric before floating in front of Danielle. "Danielle, what's going on with you? That's the second time I've seen you like that."
"I-I really don't know what you're talking about," said Danielle, holding the side of her head. "All I really know is I kinda feel like…"
"Okay, I think it's time to go back home," said Eda, Danielle passing out in her arms.
"You did see?" said Luz, walking over to Eda. "I learned my second spell! I made the connection!"
"I saw," said Eda, ruffling Luz's hair. "Nice work, kiddo."
"I'm more concerned for Danielle," said Aster, curling onto Danielle's chest and placing a paw on her face. "Something's going on and I don't know how to help."
"You showed some real bravery in there, sis," said Emira, staring at Amity.
"Yeah, nice work, kiddo," said Edric, ruffling Amity's hair.
"Grr, stop!" said Amity, fixing her hair then staring at Luz. "So, it looks like we'll be in the same class."
"Azura Book Club? Azura Book Club?!" said Luz, excitedly.
"As long as it's a secret club, okay?" said Amity, whispering while blushing.
"It's not a secret!" said Edric, overhearing Amity and Luz.
"We're gonna tell everyone!" said Emira, smiling.
"Alright, your adorable banter is literally making me sick," said Eda, sneezing before staring at Luz before picking Danielle up in her arms. "Let's go home already."
"On it, teach!" said Luz, drawing the new glyph again, producing a diagonal ice pillar that shot them up in the air, straight towards the owl house cheering in the process.
As they flew through the air, Eda conjured a big wind spell to slow them down the moment they got close to the house. Opening the front door, Eda, Aster, and Luz saw a bunch of ripped up toys strewn about the living room. King and Hooty in the middle of the living room hugging.
"Ahem!" said Eda, clearing her throat. "What the heck did you two get into?"
"Um, excuse me?" said King, staring at Eda. "We're having a moment here!"
"You'll never understand what we've been through together!" said Hooty, a little hysteric. "Never! Never!"
"Ugh, moment ruined," said King, walking away.
"I will be haunted by my actions forever," said Hooty, smiling. "Hoot hoot!"
Not wanting to deal with King and Hooty, Eda walks on up to the second floor and places Danielle in her bed. Aster slowly takes off Danielle's beanie while Eda takes off the jacket, boots and gloves. Curling up on a pillow, Aster lays down and watches over Danielle.
Owl Pellet #4
(Set after Ch. 20, same day as Owl Pellet #5)
"Hey Danielle," said Aster, sitting on the kitchen table, swishing his tail. "Can you teach me to cook?"
"Sure," said Danielle, mixing something in a bowl. "What brought this on?"
"For when Mother is no longer in that crystal," replied Aster, thinking of his mother. "I want to make her something and I thought some food would be nice since she hasn't eaten in a long time."
"That's so nice of you," said Danielle, scooping the mixture into a pan. "Do you have any ideas?"
"Mother likes flowers," replied Aster, staring at the pan. "Are there edible flowers?"
"Well, I use to suck honey out of honeysuckles back in the day," said Danielle, before rubbing Aster's head. "But I know of something else. There's decorating icing into looking like flowers."
"Icing?" said Aster, sniffing the mixture in the pan. "What's that? And what's this?"
"Icy or frosting is often a creamy glaze that is put on cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and pastries, among some other ones. Use of a specific bag and certain tips can mold the icing into a specific shape," said Danielle, smiling. "I have a lot of fun when it comes to cake decorating. What I'm making right now is brownies, they too can have icing on them."
"It smells good," said Aster, before pouting. "I won't be able to do much with these paws."
"Watching is learning too," said Danielle, grabbing a bag of nuts. "But I think you can still help as is. Think you can sprinkle these on top?"
"Of course," said Aster, grabbing the bag and using wind magic to spread the nuts on top of the brownie mix. "How is it?"
"Good," replied Danielle, looking at Aster. "And now you've helped with the brownies."
"I did, didn't I," said Aster, seeing Danielle grab the pan and walking to the stove. "Let me get it."
"Thanks Aster," said Danielle, seeing Aster open the stove door. "Every little bit helps. I'll show you what I know about cooking."
"Awesome," said Aster, closing the stove door. "I can't wait!"
Owl Pellet #5
(Set after Ch. 20)
"King. King, where are you?" asked Aster, floating around the hallway before hearing snickering nearby. "King!"
"Shh!" said King, seeing Aster round the corner before grabbing him and jumping into a pile of toys. "Okay, here goes."
"Yes! King finally playing with me," said Aster, seeing King with Eda's scroll and putting it on a video recording. "What are we playing?"
"Shh, and record," said King, getting a sleeping Danielle in shot. "Here we have the rare Danielle sleeping before us. Fair warning, stay away while they sleep or you'll be caught in a cuddle."
"Hehehe," said Aster, covering his mouth. "This is what King wanted to do. Hehehe."
"Just look how blissfully she sleeps among her subjects," said King, adjusting the shot to the toys near Danielle. "Such loyal subjects."
"Hahaha," laughed Aster, silent with his laughs while rolling onto his side. "Stop! You're too funny!"
"King, where are you?" asked Luz, coming down the hallway. "Eda is cooking breakfast."
"Sounds like the just as rare Luz is nearby as well," said King, pointing the recording to the door. "Warning for this one, their food is insanely spicy."
"King, you in here?" asked Luz, peeking into Danielle's room then walking in. "King."
"Pokéball go," said Danielle, still asleep and throwing a heal ball plushie at Luz.
"Waah!" said Luz, being beaned in the head and falling to the floor.
"Pfft, hahaha," laughed King, the toy pile tumbling and revealing his and Aster's location. "That was hilarious."
"Hmmm…" said Danielle, waking up and rubbing her eyes. "What just… Huh?"
