Chapter 1
Present:
This was one of the biggest moments in Callie Torres's life. She had finally made it. If she made the goal right now, the USA Women's Soccer team would win the WorldCup. She refocused her eyes from the crowd, to the goalie and the net. She knew what she had to do. She moved her leg forward and kicked the ball as hard as she could. The ball swiftly bounced off the grass and Callie scored right at the centre of the net. She couldn't believe it. The crowd that was tense up several moments ago, stood up and cheered loudly. The USA Women's team had finally won the world cup. Callie's team members gathered around her, she couldn't believe it. Her eyes filled with eyes and her face spoke joy. The entire crowd was chanting and cheering Callie's name.
Couple moments later, she was handed the trophy and one of her teammates splashed champagne everywhere. Everyone congratulated Callie. Though everyone hoped for her team to win, they never thought she would actually make that happen. This was supposed to be Callie's happiest moment, her greatest accomplishment and success story. But deep inside her, she felt empty and lonely. The only person she wanted to celebrate her victory was with Arizona. But she knew that Arizona wanted nothing to do with her or her career.
5 Years Ago:
Callie had just gotten back from her tournament in Spain. She was gone for five weeks. She entered her New York apartment and called out for Arizona's name, but heard no reply. She looked around the living room and kitchen, but no one was there. Callie looked in their room but it was empty as well. That's when she opened the nursery room and saw that Arizona was holding Sofia on the rocking chair, trying to get her to sleep. Callie was about to say something, but Arizona put her finger on her lips to quiet her down. Arizona stood up while holding their daughter, who finally slept after 5 hours. Callie came forward smiling at their newly born daughter. She had tears rolling down her cheeks. She was finally holding her daughter. Arizona gave birth to Sofia when Callie was playing her soccer tournament in Spain. Though it was Arizona's idea to send Callie to play her tournament, she didn't know she would be giving birth to their daughter without her wife.
But she was glad that Callie's mother, Lucia and her mother Barbara were by her side during the birth.
"You can finally hold your daughter now", Arizona said with tears in her eyes. She was so glad, Callie was finally back, it was difficult caring for a baby all by yourself. Though Lucia, Barbara and Arizona's best friend April were all their to help, it didn't feel the same as it would with her wife.
She was mentally and physically exhausted. Callie was so proud of Arizona, she knew it was a difficult birth. She was devastated when she found out Arizona was 2 weeks early and by the time her tournament ended Arizona had given birth and came home with the baby. Callie was just glad at least you could be home now with her family.
Callie hugged Arizona and their baby. "I love you guys". Arizona smiled beamingly, "we love you too".
Present:
After the exchanges with the opposing team, Portugal. Callie was being escorted to the interview room, where all the press and media was waiting for Callie.
Callie sat down on the chair and drank some water, preparing herself for the questions the media will ask her. She was just exhausted and wanted to go back to her hotel room and sleep for 10 hours. But she knew she chose this lifestyle and although it was a rewarding career, she didn't like that her entire life was exposed to the world.
Taking a deep breath she prepared herself for the first question. "Callie, how do you feel right now winning the Women's Soccer WorldCup 2023?" a young excited reporter asked. "I feel great and so blessed to play with some of my best friends who are also my teammates, it's truly been a blessing and privilege", Callie responded genuinely feeling happy about the outcome of the game and tournament.
Another reporter asked, "You have a five-year old, Sofia, how did she feel when she saw you score the winning goal?". Callie felt tense and nervous. She didn't want to lie, but she didn't want to be honest either. "Um, I am not too sure, she lives with her other mother, so unfortunately she couldn't make it to the final game". Callie responded honestly, but devastation was written all over her face.
Callie's PR manager, Miranda Bailey came in and spoke into the microphone, "please ask questions related to Callie's tournament journey and the USA Women's Team, personal questions will not be responded to".
4 Years Ago:
"Callie, when will you ever make time for your family? You are barely home, it feels like I am raising Sofia all by myself!"
"Arizona please for the love of god, I am exhausted, I was out of the country for the last 3 weeks!"
"And I was here. At home with Sofia because I am her mother who is present in her life."
Rubbing her sore shoulders from the tournament, Callie responds, "Do you think I want to be away from my child and wife? I play these games not just because it's my career Arizona, I want to provide a life for Sofia"
"You know what I am done with this. I'm going to take a shower and we can please talk to you about this later?" Before Arizona could say something, Callie shuts the bathroom door. Arizona eyes began to fill with eyes. She doesn't recognize Callie anymore.
Present:
After the interview and press, Callie is finally in her hotel room. She is truly exhausted when she lays down on the bed. A faint smile appears on her face, as she clicks on Arizona's number to call. After a couple rings, Arizona picks up.
"Hey Arizona. Can I talk to Sofia?" Callie says excitedly.
"Callie you know the time, she's asleep, it's way past her bedtime". Arizona responded in a monotone voice.
"I know, I know. I just thought, she would be watching the game"
"She was Callie, she tried her best to stay awake. I even told her that Momma won't be sad if she goes to bed, but she refused and continued to watch the game towards the end. Eventually I had to take her upstairs otherwise she wouldn't wake up for school tomorrow" Arizona sighed deeply.
After moments for dead silence on both ends of the call. Arizona finally spoke gently. "Congratulations Callie, you finally got what you wanted".
"Thanks Arizona, it means a lot to me".
After more awkward silence. Whispering Callie nervously asked, "Arizona, di-did-did you watch my game too?"
"What do you think of Callie?" Arizona sighed deeply, in a slight disbelief that Callie is even asking this question. When Arizona heard no response back, she said, "of course I watched the game, Callie. You know I never miss your game", telling the truth genuinely.
" I-I know. I-I just thought that after everything we've been through you would stop watching my games" Callie responded with a hint of disappointment in her voice.
Arizona knew why Callie was asking this question. But she didn't want them to argue or fight again, especially not when Callie had just won the WorldCup. So to lighten up the
mood, she jokingly said, "You know I am like your lucky charm, If I don't watch your game, it's likely that you will lose".
Smirkingly Arizona waited for Callie to respond back with a light and joking taunt. But instead Callie said, "Arizona, you have always been my lucky charm, before every game I close my eyes and see yours and Sofia's faces. You guys are the reason why I continue to play" Callie said in a serious yet loving tone.
Sighing deeply Arizona said, "But Sofia and I are not enough for you to quit this career"
