"Oh and would you look at that! Sonic the Sandslash has exploded onto the scene and defeated Charlotte's Arcanine with brutal efficiency! Will Charlotte be able to make a comeback, or is this the end of her run!"
The crowd was going crazy at the sight of a simple Sandslash beating the Legendary pokemon themselves, but I did my best not to sneer at the. Humans are such egotistical and stupid things, too many times I've seen trainers let their pride loose just so that they can feel good about looking down on a pokemon they deem weak, there's no such thing as a useless pokemon in my eyes, just look at Ash Ketchum and his monster of a Pikachu, any pokemon can be crazily strong with enough training.
But apparently none of these people seem to acknowledge that.
Charlotte stared at her Arcanine with gritted teeth and I felt a little bad for beating the shit out of her pokemon now. Maybe I went a bit far, it's not that she's a bad trainer, I'm just a relentless bastard.
Whilst I might fight like a dick I try not to make it a habit to be a dick to people, and making a pretty girl cry is never a good thing to do, mama raised a gentlemen afterall.
…okay not really a gentlemen, but she didn't raise a dickhead either.
Charlotte stopped making a frustrated facial expression after a few moments and her eyes softened significantly as she stared at her pokemon's unconscious form.
"You were amazing Arcanine, take a good rest." She held up her pokeball and withdrew the fire-type with a sad smile on her face. Just from that alone I could tell that she was a good trainer, even if her pokemon got creamed she still wouldn't hold it against them.
Charlotte placed her beaten partner's pokeball on the back of her belt and stared at me for a moment. Her gaze then switched to Sonic and she complimented us." You're really strong, how did you get your Sandslash to be so fast?"
I was slightly caught off guard at the question, but figured that there wasn't any rush, and that telling her why he's so fast wouldn't hurt." We do a lot of speed training, plus his ability is Sand Rush, his speed is doubled in a Sandstorm." I spoke as I gestured to the sand that was still lingering in the air.
Charlotte was a bit surprised by that for a moment, but then it looked like a light bulb just lit in her head and suddenly she didn't looks so nervous anymore. With renewed confidence she plucked a pokeball from her belt." That's good to know, and don't think that just because you got the first win the match is over. It's just beginning actually! Go Ninetales!"
Charlotte threw her pokeball into the middle of the battlefield and it burst open with a white light.
Once the flash disappeared a golden-yellow fox stood on all fours with their fangs bared as a form of intimidation, they also had shiny red eyes that gleamed with a feeling of judgement that seemed almost condescending. Finally the Ninetales had... well nine tails, they also had golden-yellow fur but the ends of the appendages were notably orange.
Like I've said before Ninetales are considered signs of status, at least in Kanto, because a Ninetales is said to live for 1000 years. How exactly they can achieve this longevity is unknown to humans, but people have suspicions of the energy in their tails being the cause since, the older a Ninetales gets, the less prominent the orange fur on their tails becomes, when they run out of orange fur they will meet their end. This Ninetales had a lot of orange fur on it's tails, this means that it's a very young member of it's species.
Their strength is also a big reason that they're so revered in Kanto, a Ninetales will be able to match the strength of a Charizard if you're talking purely about the firepower that they can bring. They also have a large affinity for psychic-type attacks so I can expect to see, Extrasensory, Psyshock, Calm Mind, and Hypnosis.
I can tell that this one will be a dangerous opponent.
"Oh and it looks like Charlotte has picked her Ninetales to combat Asher's Sandslash! Will this be enough to give Charlotte an edge though?!"
My eyes momentarily shifted from Ninetales to Sonic, whilst my partner did come out pretty good from the last fight it's not like he wasn't hurt at all by that Arcanine, he used a few moves as well, whilst he might be a stamina monster that doesn't mean that any damage he took won't slow him down.
Sonic noticed my gaze and in response he merely flashed a wink my way before turning back the the battlefield where he rubbed his sharpened claws against each other in a threatening manner at his opponent, in response all he got was a dismissive scoff.
It was then that I noticed that the air suddenly felt a lot dryer and the sun was a whole brighter. Much to my surprise the sand around the arena dispersed in just a moment and was replaced by a hot and bright sky.
What the hell?
Sonic also looked very confused by what just happened since he was whipping around in surprise at where his Sandstorm had gone.
It was at that moment that it hit me. I stared at the Ninetales with some mild concern. They must have the hidden ability Drought, as soon as a pokemon with that ability is called to the field the sun is immediately put up, if another weather condition is already in place then that one is instantly displaced.
Above our heads appeared an orange orb that would keep the sun up as long as Ninetales is around, I could easily just ask Sonic to put the sand back up, but then again she could do the exact same to me, and every time you use a move like Sandstorm it'll drain a bit of your stamina, unlike Drought.
I guess I'll just let her keep this little advantage.
"Sonic use Rollout the ram into them. Then once your in close use Toxic."
Toxic is a really underrated move in my opinion, it's basically the perfect move if you want to be a prick and stall out your opponent. The poison in toxic is also flammable so if they try and fight it off with a fire attack then it'll blow up in their face.
Sonic jumped into action instantly with him hopping into the air and curling into a ball covered with quills that instantly started to spin rapidly like a car before rolling forward towards the opposing pokemon at high speeds.
The attack wasn't as fast as before but that was to be expected, without Sand Rush active Sonic's speed won't be nearly as extreme as it was before, still though, he had exceptional natural speed so Charlotte still had to act fast.
Charlotte saw and spoke quickly, though not with fear." Use Will-o-wisp."
At the command the golden fox growled lowly as nine orbs of purple fire orbited around her steadily, they then burst forward with intent to burn down Sonic who was approaching the fox in his rolled up form.
I notice the attack and knew that I couldn't let Sonic just tank a Will-o-wisp like that, if he got burnt then that'd be a massive pain. So we need to avoid that.
"Curve to the side and avoid the attack, then once your done go around and continue your attack."
Sonic followed my orders and quickly changed his direction in order to avoid the fiery orbs which would impair him with a burn. It was a testiment to his skill for him to just change his direction of travel so easily. And usually that would have been enough to avoid an attack like Will-o-wisp.
Usually being the key word here.
To my immense surprise the flames from the Ninetales attack seemed to curve as Sonic did, they changed trajectory and I could tell that he'd be hit in just a moment.
"Safeguard!" I yelled quickly in an attempt to stop my partner from being burnt.
Sonic heard my order and quickly jumped out of his rolling form, whilst he was in the air he held both of his claws up like a shield as a thin and sparkly shield of energy surrounded him.
Just as he finished using the protective move the purple orbs fell down upon him and engulfed him in fire, the attack burned him a bit, since he did get hit with fire afterall, but he didn't end up getting burnt, and that was the important thing.
I took a moment to think about what exactly Ninetales had done, they didn't just produce and direct flames when they attacked me, they controlled them. Does the Ninetales line possess some form of pyrokinesis?
That will be tricky to deal with that's for sure.
Charlotte wasn't deterred by the general failure of that Will-o-wisp though, if anything she looked more determined that ever as she pushed the offensive.
"Use Flamethrower!"
White hot flames immediately gushed out of Ninetales mouth and burst forward towards my Sandslash, who was standing ready to burst into action at my word.
"Use Dig to dodge."
Sonic jumped into the ground and quickly burrowed a hole for himself to hide in. Because of his swift evasive actions he remained out of the way as his opponents stream of fire passed over the hole that he dug harmlessly.
Charlotte saw this and just pumped her fist forward as she ordered her pokemon once again." Use Fire Blast, and aim it right into the hole!"
Ninetales jumped forward as an orb of compressed fire gathered inside of their maw which they let loose and fired right into the hole that Sonic dug. I grit my teeth at this since Sonic won't be able to hear me, with him being underground. I can only hope that he dodges the attack on his own accord.
The attack suddenly splintered and broke open as Sonic jumped out from inside the ground, thankfully looking like he hadn't been burnt by that attack at all, and lifted up his claw to deal a super effective strike to Ninetales back.
Charlotte saw this and quickly yelled." Use protect Ninetales!"
A green wall was instantly put between Sonic and Ninetales that blocked the attack, my partners claw fought against the barrier with great effort but despite cracking under the force the shield did hold up in the end and Sonic was forced to back off.
"Solarbeam!"
Oh shit-
"Hyper Beam!" I absolutely could not allow Sonic to be hit by a Solarbeam, with the sun out that attack will hit him instantly, and presumably knock him out, I have to put something between the two of them to block that attack. As a Sandslash his defensive abilities weren't enough to tank a super effective attack like that, and he can't dodge whilst he in midair. The only way to avoid that attack is to match it.
A familiar sphere of inky black energy formed in front of Sonic's tiny ant-eater mouth. The orb swerved chaotically as it got ready to blast it's opponent into oblivion.
Meanwhile Ninetales also allowed a light green orb of grass-type energy to form in front of her mouth, it formed far quicker than their opponents and was almost see-through in appearance. The attack would clearly hurt whoever was on the receiving end of it very badly.
"Go Ninetales, FINISH THEM OFF WITH SOLAR BEAM!"
"Like hell are we gonna be brought down by some overgrown fox! HYPER BEAM THEIR FUCKING FACES OFF!"
Okay maybe the blood was rushing right to my head. I didn't even notice that I swore very loudly on national television.
Ninetales seemed to be as worked up as their trainer since their emotions gave way to power in the form of a brilliant green and white beam of light which tore out of the orb which confined it and continued its course right for Sonic.
Of course he wasn't just going to take that attack, he responded by letting loose his Hyper Beam prematurely, the normal-type attack met the grass-type attack in the middle and-
'BOOM'
The result of the two attacks meeting was explosive to say the least, the residue from the two attacks colliding enveloped both of our pokemon and obscured them from our vision. We were both anxious at that point, we had no idea who would emerge the victor and who would be left with the bitter taste of defeat.
However, our question was soon answered when two figures fell out of the cloud, looking at them closely I could tell that they were both very injured, could this be a double knock out?
Almost as if to answer my question they both hit the ground at that moment, the impact almost seemed to wake the two of them up as they bounced to their feet.
They were both obviously in terrible condition, Sonic was looking battered and beaten with scratches and burns all over his body, he was holding himself up by digging his claws into the ground and using them as crutches to support his entire body, if you took those away he'd probably fall down and not get back up. He looked like shit.
And so did Ninetales.
The once regal and proper looking fox was looking anything but now, with burnt and ruined fur all over their body, and they were panting like the dog they were. They were still better off than Sonic though, if not that much.
It was obvious that Sonic couldn't continue, he was beaten bad, really bad, like a flick to the forehead would be enough to put him down for good. But still I could see that spark in his eyes, he might act like an idiot with ADHD most of the time but he was loyal to a fault. He would continue in a fight until he couldn't.
Even if it killed him.
But, as his trainer it's my responsibility to stop that from happening.
I turned to the referee and said plainly and bluntly." I'm retiring Sonic, he can't fight anymore."
That seemed to spark a reaction out of Sonic since he turned to me using what little energy he could muster and yelled at-or at least tried to-." Sand, Sandslash." His voice was weak though, and he just lacked enough stamina to make me stop.
Still though, I put my foot down and tried to butter him up." Oh come on dude it doesn't really matter, besides it's not like they actually put you down themselves, it's not like they're better than you, you already beat the shit out of that Arcanine didn't you? Plus you got that Ninetales down to looking like that-" I gestured to the beaten up fox that was growling lowly at their strength being insulted."- so isn't that enough?"
Sonic seemed to think on my words and look at his opponent, then back at me, then himself, and he decided to roll over and lie on the ground whilst accepting his defeat. good lad.
I then held up a pokeball and returned my partner into the confines of the contraction so that he could be healed up later after I've won this battle.
"You heard that right folks?! Asher has chosen to retire his Sandslash from this battle! That means that he's down to just two pokemon, what is the ground master going to pick as his next pokemon!"
I found myself growing increasingly annoyed with the announcer as the battle went on, maybe at some point it was entertaining, but now? It was just a bit annoying to have someone commenting on your every move.
Charlotte also stared at me strangely." Why would you withdraw your pokemon like that, he looked like he could have continued." She commented.
I just scoffed at that." Don't that his act fool you baby cakes, he was literally a strong gust of wind away from going down for good. As his trainer it's my job to make sure that he doesn't go through any unnecessary pain, it's better for the both of us if he takes a breather,"
She looked at me weirdly for a moment before she giggled a bit at my words." Baby cakes? Really? I'm like three years older than you."
I blinked a little at that." Wait, how old do you think I am?" I asked in genuine curiosity, whilst Charlotte might be my opponent right now she's still a pretty hot girl. Wonder what her deal is? She can't be that much older than me, right?
She stared for a moment in contemplation." You look maybe... sixteen?"
"I'm fourteen." I deadpanned at her. I've heard a few comment that I look older than I am, I'm about 5'8 at the moment, but then again I'm only fourteen biologically, I could easily shoot up in a month or two. Either way I'm still not a midget.
Her eyebrows lifted in surprise at that." Wow. Well sorry kid I shouldn't be flirting with you, I'm not a cougar."
I felt my eyebrow twitch in annoyance at the realisation that I couldn't even just flirt with a nineteen year old woman successfully, being young has it's perks, most notably the extra decade and a bit of life I got from being aged down, but it also has it's downsides. Most notably being treated like a kid.
And also puberty.
She seemed to notice my annoyance and laughed a little at my expense. Okay, now I'm a little pissed off, and there's no better way to vent your frustrations than sending out your magical creatures to fight other magical creatures.
I grabbed a pokeball from my belt and pointed it at the blonde girl's direction." The game still isn't over, but with this one it will be soon."
Okay I was being a little dramatic, but everyone in this anime-verse was dramatic, sue me.
I pulled my arm back and threw the thing with immense precision." Go Selena!"
The pokeball I released flew through the air until it burst like a balloon and released the creature inside.
The white energy of the device swirled and merged together until it finally dissipated and released my pokemon.
She dropped the the ground with an audible thud, her thick and bulky armour shined under the sun like a polished gem and her muscles casually flexed themselves as she gazed around her surrounding with narrow brown eyes.
"Oh, it looks like Asher has picked his next pokemon! He has chosen a Nidoqueen! Will this one match up to the powerhouse of a Nidoking we saw in his previous match, or will Charlotte be able to overcome her opponent?!"
Selena then noticed the large crowd which were observing her and in response she waved friendlily to the audience with a large smile on her face. They seemed to respond to the gesture by waving back at her.
Selena is probably the friendliest of my pokemon, she's always got a smile on her face, and she's got the strength to more than meet my standards. Quite frankly I'm not surprised that the crowd loved her.
However, once Selena was done waving to the crowd she turned her eyes to the beaten form of Ninetales and without warning jumped into a high speed sprint.
Charlotte saw this and was surprised by the speed such a large pokemon was showing, however she quickly composed herself and ordered her Ninetales to counter the running Nidoqueen.
"Use Flamethrower."
Ninetales responded in kind and immediately spat out a large burst of orange flames that would have given a lot of pokemon the business.
I just smirked though and uttered." Surf."
Within a moments notice Selena, whilst still running, called forth a torrent of water that grew and grew at a rapid pace as she advanced, eventually a large wave that would put most water-types to shame was being ridden by my Nidoqueen.
"WOW! THAT GROUND POKEMON IS SURFING! ARE YOU SEEING THIS EVERYONE?!" The commentator spoke with shock and awe in his voice.
People are always underestimating the versatility of ground-types, whilst yes we do like to Earthquake things into oblivion there are far better routes to go than that, for example the Nidoran line can learn a lot of different kinds of moves. Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam are just a few that I can name.
Unfortunately, since they lack the types of these moves their proficiency in using them isn't nearly as good as a pokemon who is actually that type, if we want to improve our mastery of these types then we need to distribute ourselves right. I limit certain pokemon to certain types so that they aren't spread too thin. For example, Selena has mastery over water and ice-type moves, whilst Sebastian has mastery over fire and electric-type moves.
Her mastery is high enough that she can easily form a Surf as though she were actually a water-type.
Seeing the large wave of water heading her way Charlotte had sweat drops on her forehead as she commanded her pokemon to endure the attack." Use Protect!"
Selena jumped off the wave she created, but she wasn't done. Or more specifically we weren't.
"Freeze the water with Ice Beam!"
Charlotte's eyes widened in shock as the wave crashed down on top of her fire-type, but not even a moment later it was all frozen when rays of ice crashed down on top of her Ninetales and froze her partner in a prison of ice.
But I wasn't done yet. This thing needs to go down.
"EARTHQUAKE!"
Selena stomped on the ground as she roared as though she were the earth itself, her attack caused seismic tremors to run wild as the battlefield shattered and the ice prison she made to trap her opponent fell apart like a poorly made sand castle, it broke apart and came down on top of the pokemon still inside of it.
And when the dust cleared Charlotte was flabbergast to see her partner laying near the destroyed structure with ice loosely hanging off of their fur. Unable to battle.
Meanwhile though I grinned at her and relished the shock she felt at the power my pokemon could bring.
She hasn't seen anything yet though. Not even close.
